Abstract
A suitably protected Orn-derived (3S,4S)-β-lactam was used as common intermediate in the synthesis of conformationally constrained (3S,4S)-2-oxoazepane α,α- and (2S,3S)-2-oxopiperidine-β(2,3,3)-amino acid derivatives. Compared to alternative procedures using an N-p-methoxybenzyl group at the 2-azetidinone, the incorporation of a p-methoxyphenyl moiety is crucial for the excellent stereochemical outcomes in the preparation of these heterocyclic amino acids. Chemoselective 7- or 6-exo-trig cyclization was achieved through alternative sequences of Pmp-deprotection/Boc-activation, followed by inter- and intramolecular β-lactam ring opening, respectively.

Abstract
The cyclic pentapeptide cyclo[Gly-Phe(2Me)-Aib-Aib-Gly], containing three α,α-disubstituted α-amino acids, was prepared by cyclization of H-Gly-Phe(2Me)-Aib-Aib-Gly-OH with diphenyl phosporazidate (DPPA) in 60% yield. The synthesis of the linear precursor was performed by using the ‘azirine/oxazolone method’, in which the α,α-disubstituted α-amino acids were introduced by coupling of the corresponding amino or peptide acid with a 2,2-disubstituted 3-amino-2H-azirine. Whereas the cyclization of an analogous hexapeptide afforded the cyclopeptide in 42% yield, the corresponding tetrapeptide yielded a 1:2 mixture of the monomeric and dimeric cyclopeptide. In the case of the tripeptide H-Gly-Phe(2Me)-Aib-OH, the cyclization with DPPA led to the dimeric cyclohexapeptide exclusively.

Abstract
The properties of a mixed CdTe quantum dot/tetrahydro-4H-thiopyran-4-ylidene-functionalized polythiophene system are reported. This system was prepared by exposing trioctylphosphine (TOP)-capped CdTe quantum dots to the polythiophene in solution. Strong fluorescence emission quenching and shortening of the fluorescence emission lifetimes of both the polythiophene and the quantum dots occur when they are mixed, indicating the occurrence of photoinduced charge separation. Photoinduced absorption spectroscopy reveals a considerable decrease in the population of the polythiophene triplet excited state in the mixed system. These results demonstrate that between the quantum dots and the polythiophene there is both physical and electronic contact, which is mediated by the tetrahydro-4H-thiopyran-4-ylidene side chains.

Abstract
The preferred conformations of peptides heavily based on the currently extensively exploited achiral and chiral alpha-amino acids with a quaternary alpha-carbon atom, as determined by conformational energy computations, crystal-state (x-ray diffraction) analyses, and solution ((1)H-NMR and spectroscopic) investigations, are reviewed. It is concluded that 3(10)/alpha-helical structures and the fully extended (C(5)) conformation are preferentially adopted by peptide sequences characterized by this family of amino acids, depending upon overall bulkiness and nature (e.g., whether acyclic or C(alpha) (i) <--> C(alpha) (i) cyclized) of their side chains. The intriguing relationship between alpha-carbon chirality and bend/helix handedness is also illustrated. gamma-Bends and semiextended conformations are rarely observed. Formation of beta-sheet structures is prevented.

Abstract
Long-range sigma-pi interactions in tetrahydro4H-thiopyran end-capped oligo(cyclohexylidenes) were identified by He(I) photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and ab initio RHF/6-31G* calculations. The vertical ionization energies Ivj of the highest occupied molecular orbitals (MO's) were assigned using Koopmans' theorem (Iv,j = -epsilonj) and by correlation with the ionizations of related reference compounds. The experimental (PES) and theoretical (RHF/6-31G*) results are in good agreement. For tercyclohexylidene derivatives which contain two nonconjugated pi-bonds splittings deltaIv,j of the pi-bands in the range from approximately 0.5 to 0.7 eV (delta-epsilonj approximately 0.6 to 0.9 eV). For the bi- and tercyclohexylidene compounds containing two sulfur atoms at their alpha- and omega-end positions the pi-type sulfur lone pair bands [Lppi(S)] split significantly by deltaIvj approximately 0.3 to 0.4 eV (delta-epsilonj approximately 0.3 to 0.4 eV), i.e. sigma-pi interactions over distances of ca. 8 and 12 A, respectively, occur. The magnitude of the interactions and the observed splittings are independent of the anti and syn conformations of the oligo(cyclohexylidene) hydrocarbon skeletons. RHF/6-31G* Natural Bond Orbital analyses reveal that the Hax-C-C-Hax precanonical MO's (PCMO's) centered on the cyclohexyl-type rings are paramount for the relay of the through-bond sigma-pi interactions; no through-space sigma-pi interactions were identified.
