Abstract
Consumption of wild mushrooms has increased in recent years; however, not all of them are edible and there is no precise information on those that may cause poisoning. Therefore, studies to obtain data about their toxicity are needed. For this purpose, we used the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana, a crustacean employed in toxicity tests and with wide application in the toxin detection, including mycotoxins. Mushrooms were collected in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, with which aqueous extracts were prepared. Dilutions of the stock solution of each extract were made to final concentrations of 50, 100, 250, 500, and 1000 µg/mL. Potassium dichromate (PD) was used as positive control and artificial seawater as negative control. The median lethal dose (LD50) of extracts on nauplii of A. franciscana was calculated. The aqueous extracts obtained from Amanita amerivirosa, A. muscaria, Chlorophyllum molybdites, and Leucopaxillus amarus showed a LD50 < 70 µg/mL, similar to PD (LD50 = 37 µg/mL). This is the first indication of the probable toxicity of Leucopaxillus amarus in humans. Cantharellus cibarius and Scleroderma texense caused the lower toxicity to the nauplii. The brine shrimp bioassay was effective in evaluating the toxicity of Basidiomycota. Scleroderma texense has been reported to be toxic, but it was not for this crustacean nauplii, and probably not to humans either, as recent literature has reported.

Abstract
Three new sesquiterpenes, phlebidiol, phlebioic acid, and phlebiolide, as well as the known compound tremetriol, were isolated from cultures of the basidiomycete Phlebia tremellosa. The structures of all isolated compounds were established by extensive spectroscopic analyses, including those involving extensive two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance. The absolute configurations of phlebidiol, phlebioic acid, and phlebiolide were determined by comparisons of experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism spectra. Phlebidiol and phlebioic acid have previously unreported carbon skeletons, for which we propose the skeletal names “seco-sterpurane” and “phlebiane,” respectively. Phlebiolide is also the second published example of a merulane sesquiterpene.

Discovery of structurally diverse and bioactive compounds from plant resources in China. Acta Pharmacol Sin 2012; 33:1147-58. Abstract
This review describes the major discoveries of structurally diverse and/or biologically significant compounds from plant resources in China, mainly from the traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) since the establishment of our research group in 1999. In the past decade, a large array of biologically significant and novel structures has been identified from plant resources (or TCM) in our laboratory. The structural modification of several biologically important compounds led to more than 400 derivatives, some of which exhibited significantly improved activities and provided opportunities to elucidate the structure-activity relationship of the related compound class. These findings are important for drug discovery and help us understand the biological basis for the traditional applications of these plants in TCM.

Abstract
Cancer cell line bioassay-guided separation of an ethyl acetate extract prepared from a plant-associated fungus, Coprinus cinereus, led to the isolation of three new sesquiterpenes, coprinastatin 1 (1), coprinol (2), and the epimer (4a), of the known sesquiterpene triol (4b). The previously described sesquiterpene 3 and oxazolinone 5 were also isolated. The structure and relative configuration of coprinastatin 1 (1) were determined by HRMS and by 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopic analyses. The structure of terpene 2 was elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments. The remaining structures were similarly determined, structure 3 by spectroscopic analyses and both 4a and 5 by X-ray crystal structure determination. Coprinastatin 1 (1) was found to inhibit growth of the murine P388 lymphocytic leukemia cell line and the pathogenic bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
