Hypervalent Iodine Catalyzed Cyclization of Aryl-Substituted Alkanoic Acids

Electrochemical C(sp3)-H Lactonization of 2-Alkylbenzoic Acids toward Phthalides

Herein, we report direct electrochemical C(sp³)-H lactonization of 2-alkylbenzoic acids toward phthalides. The reaction provides a wide substrate scope of 2-alkylbenzoic acids bearing primary to tertiary C(sp³)-H bonds by utilizing a graphite anode, dichloromethane (DCM) solvent, hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) cosolvent, and n-Bu₄NClO₄ electrolyte. Our synthetic approach offers a simple, intuitive, and atom-economical protocol to synthesize various phthalides (25 examples, up to 92% yield) and obtain other 5- and 6-membered lactones (10 examples, up to 83% yield).

Copper-catalyzed aerobic benzylic C(sp3)-H lactonization of 2-alkylbenzamides via N-centered radicals

Herein, we describe the copper-catalyzed aerobic C(sp³)-H functionalization of 2-alkylbenzamides for the synthesis of benzolactones. This reaction proceeds via 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer of N-centered radicals directly generated by N-H bond cleavage and does not require the synthesis of pre-functionalized N-centered radical precursors or the use of strong stoichiometric oxidants.

Synthesis of Isoindoles from Intramolecular Condensation of Benzyl Azides with α-Aryldiazoesters

Rh-catalyzed intramolecular condensation of the benzyl azides with α-aryldiazoesters was explored. The reaction proceeded through the nucleophilic attack of the organic azide onto a rhodium carbenoid, while releasing nitrogen gas, affording the α-imino esters as the primary product. Tautomerization of the imino esters efficiently gave 13 desired isoindoles with good to excellent yields.

C-H oxygenation at tertiary carbon centers using iodine oxidant

An oxidation system in which iodic acid (HIO3) is used as an oxidant in the presence of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) permitted the selective hydroxylation of tertiary C-H bonds and the lactonization of carboxylic acids containing a tertiary carbon center. These reactions are operationally simple and proceed under metal-free conditions using commercially available reagents, thus offering an ideal tool for the efficient oxidation of C-H bonds at tertiary carbon centers.

Advances in Synthetic Applications of Hypervalent Iodine Compounds

The preparation, structure, and chemistry of hypervalent iodine compounds are reviewed with emphasis on their synthetic application. Compounds of iodine possess reactivity similar to that of transition metals, but have the advantage of environmental sustainability and efficient utilization of natural resources. These compounds are widely used in organic synthesis as selective oxidants and environmentally friendly reagents. Synthetic uses of hypervalent iodine reagents in halogenation reactions, various oxidations, rearrangements, aminations, C-C bond-forming reactions, and transition metal-catalyzed reactions are summarized and discussed. Recent discovery of hypervalent catalytic systems and recyclable reagents, and the development of new enantioselective reactions using chiral hypervalent iodine compounds represent a particularly important achievement in the field of hypervalent iodine chemistry. One of the goals of this Review is to attract the attention of the scientific community as to the benefits of using hypervalent iodine compounds as an environmentally sustainable alternative to heavy metals.
