Synthesis and Self-assembly of Novel Nanofeather-like Fluorescent Alkyloxy-Containing Diphenyl Ether Organogelators

In this study, novel fluorescent low molecular-weight organogelators are derived from diphenyl ethers and substituted with para-alkoxy groups of different aliphatic chain lengths. The present research promotes the preparation of innovative nanofeather-like assemblies from the synthesized diphenyl ether-derived organogelators. The gelation performance of the prepared alkoxy-substituted diphenyl ethers was reported. The synthesis procedure was achieved by using a base-catalyzed reaction of hydroxyl-substituted diphenyl with various alcohols of different aliphatic chain lengths. The chemical structures of the synthesized diphenyl ether derivatives were studied by ¹H/¹³C NMR and infrared spectroscopy. Fluorescence and UV-vis absorption spectral analyses showed solvatochromism. The diphenyl ether derivatives with longer alkoxy terminal substituents showed enhanced thermoreversible gelation activity as compared to the diphenyl ether derivatives with shorter alkoxy terminal substituents. The morphological properties of the self-assembled diphenyl ethers were studied by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, which showed supramolecular architectures of highly ordered nanofeathers, enforced by van der Waals interactions and π-stacks. Depending on the length of the aliphatic tail, different morphologies were detected, including nanofeathers, nanofibers, and nanosheets. The antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties of the prepared diphenyl ether-derived organogelators were examined to confirm their possible use in various fields like drug delivery systems.

Immobilization of lanthanide doped aluminate phosphor onto recycled polyester toward the development of long-persistent photoluminescence smart window

Smart window can be defined as switchable material whose light transmission is altered upon exposure to light, voltage, or heat. However, smart windows usually produced from expensive and breakable glass materials. Herein, transparent smart window with long-persistent phosphorescence, high optical transmittance, ultraviolet protection, rigid, high photostability and durability, and superhydrophobicity was developed from recycled polyester (PET). Recycled polyester waste (RBW) was simply immobilized with different ratios of lanthanide-doped aluminate nanoparticles (LdAN) to provide a long-persistent phosphorescent polyester smart window (LdAN@PET) with an ability to persist emitting light for extended time periods. The solid-state high temperature technique was used to prepare LdA micro-scale powder. Then, the top-down technique was applied to afford the corresponding LdA nanoparticles. Recycled shredded recycled polyester bottles were charged into a hot bath to provide a clear plastic shred bulk, which was then well-mixed with LdAN and drop-casted to provide long-persistent luminescent smart window. In order to improve the phosphor dispersion in the PET bulk, LdAN was synthesized in the nanoparticle form which was characterized utilizing transmission electron microscope (TEM). For better preparation of translucent smart window of long-persistent phosphorescent polyester, LdAN must be homogeneously dispersed in the PET matrix without agglomeration. The morphology and chemical composition were studied by infrared spectra (FT-IR), X-ray fluorescent (XRF) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersion X-ray analyzer (EDS). In addition, spectral profiles of excitation and emission, and decay and lifetime were used to better understand the photoluminescence properties. The hardness properties were also investigated. The developed phosphorescent transparent polyester smart window demonstrated a color switch to intense green underneath UV irradiation and greenish-yellow under darkness as verified by CIE Lab color parameters. The afterglow polyester smart window showed an absorption wavelength at 365 nm and two phosphorescence intensities at 442 and 512 nm. An enhanced UV protection, photostability and hydrophobic activity were detected. The luminescent polyester substrates with lower LdAN ratios demonstrated rapid and reversible fluorescent photochromic activity beneath the UV light. The luminescent polyester substrates with higher LdAN contents displayed long-persistent phosphorescence afterglow. The current strategy can be simply applied for the production of smart windows, low thickness anticounterfeiting films and warning signs.

Development of a Fluorescent Nanofibrous Template by In Situ SNAr Polymerization of Fluorine-Containing Terphenyls with Aliphatic Diols: Self-Assembly and Optical and Liquid Crystal Properties

Stimulus-responsive supramolecular organogels have been broadly studied, but the assembly of a liquid crystalline organogel with a thermoreversible response remains a challenge. This could be attributed to the difficulty of designing organogelators with liquid crystalline properties. Nucleophilic aromatic substitution (S_NAr) has been utilized to produce a diversity of pentafluorobenzene-containing aromatics, which are very regioselective to para positions. Those pentafluorobenzene-functionalized aromatics have been ideal compounds for the preparation of calamitic liquid crystals. In this context, novel fluoroterphenyl-containing main-chain polyether (FTP@PE) was synthesized using in situ S_NAr polymerization as a convenient and effective synthetic strategy toward the development of fluorescent liquid crystals bearing fluoroterphenyl and ether groups. The fluoroterphenyl unit was synthesized by Cu(I)-supported decarboxylation cross-coupling of potassium pentafluorobenzoate and 1,4-diiodobenzene. The chemical structures of FTP@PE were studied with ¹H/¹³C/¹⁹F nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectra. The liquid crystal mesophases were determined with differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy. Ultraviolet-visible absorbance and emission spectral profiles showed solvatochromic activity. The nanofibrous morphologies were studied with a scanning electron microscope. The organogels of FTP@PE were developed in a number of solvents via van der Waals attraction forces of aliphatic moieties and π stacking of fluoroterphenyl groups. They demonstrated thermoreversible responsiveness.

Synthesis, characterization, and self-assembly of fluorescent fluorine-containing liquid crystals

S_N Ar has been used to synthesize various functionalized derivatives of pentafluorobenzenes which are highly specific at the para position; and consequently are ideal for building calamitic (rod-like) liquid crystalline molecular systems. Here, we display the effectiveness of S_N Ar chemistry as a convenient method toward the synthesis of fluorescent liquid crystalline perfluorinated comprising ethers and thioethers in excellent yields and high purity. In the current work, we describe the synthesis, self-assembly, and mesogenic properties of new perfluorinated para-terphenyls bearing various para-substituted alkoxy and thioalkoxy chains. The terphenyl core was prepared using Cu(I) (or Cu(I)/phenanthroline)-catalyzed decarboxylative carbon-carbon (or carbon-oxygen [sulfur]) cross-coupling from the analogous aromatic iodide and fluorobenzoate potassium salt. The molecular structures of the prepared perfluorinated terphenyls were demonstrated with ¹ H, ¹³ C, and ¹⁹ F NMR, as well as FT-IR and X-ray crystallography. The liquid crystalline properties and mesogenic phases were characterized with differential scanning calorimetry and high-resolution polarized optical microscope. Both UV-visible absorbance and emission spectra demonstrated solvatochromism. Supramolecular self-assembly of the generated perfluorinated para-terphenyls was monitored by van der Waals and π-π stacking interaction forces. The creation of nanofibrous architectures was monitored by scanning electron microscopy.

Synthesis and characterization of novel fluoroterphenyls: self-assembly of low-molecular-weight fluorescent organogel

Nucleophilic aromatic substitution has been highly para selective on a range of functionalized pentafluorobenzenes. Here, we demonstrate the utility of nucleophilic aromatic substitution chemistry for the preparation of fluorinated fluorescent low-molecular-weight organogels. The molecular design, synthesis and photophysical performance of a new class of thermoreversible and fluorescent low-molecular-weight organogels from para-alkoxy-functionalized fluorinated terphenyls are described. Both CuI-catalyzed decarboxylative cross-coupling and nucleophilic aromatic substitution chemistry were used for the preparation of those highly fluorinated gelators in high yields and excellent purity via simple filtration, from the corresponding potassium fluorobenzoate salts and aryl iodides. Various fluorinated symmetrical and asymmetrical para terphenyls were prepared with various para terminal alkoxy tails. Those fluorinated terphenyls were characterized using X-ray crystallography, differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, as well as ¹ H, ¹³ C, and ¹⁹ F nuclear magnetic resonance. UV-visible light absorbance and emission spectra of those new materials displayed a solvatochromic and solvatofluorochromic behaviour, respectively. Self-assembly of the produced fluorinated terphenyls occurred via cooperative π-π stacking and van der Waals interactions, which resulted in gelating various organic solvents. Scanning electron microscopy displayed the formation of fibre-like nanostructures. The cytotoxicity of some selected fluorinated symmetrical and asymmetrical para terphenyls was explored.

Simple Development of Novel Reversible Colorimetric Thermometer Using Urea Organogel Embedded with Thermochromic Hydrazone Chromophore

Thermochromic urea (U) organogel immobilized with a thermochromic tricyanofuran hydrazone (TCFH) chromophore was developed. Thermochromic TCFH chromophore bearing two nitro functional groups on a hydrazone recognition unit was synthesized via an azo-coupling reaction of tricyanofuran (TCF) heterocyclic moiety containing an active methyl group with the diazonium chloride salt of 2,4-dinitroaniline comprising two strongly electron-withdrawing nitro groups. The molecular structure of both intermediates and TCFH dye were characterized by several analytical methods, including 1H NMR, 13C NMR, IR, mass spectroscopy (MS), and elemental analysis. The thermochromic responsiveness could be attributed to the charge delocalization of TCFH as well as to the presence of an intramolecular charge transfer. The generated organogel displayed a thermoreversible sol–gel transition associated with color change. The origin of the monitored thermochromism is a conformational change of the tricyanofuran hydrazone backbone due to the temperature-driven deprotonation–protonation reversible process. The prepared urea–tricyanofuran hydrazone (UTCFH) thermometer acted as a diagnostic tool providing an instant color change between yellow, orange, red and purple upon changing the temperature of the UTCFH organogel in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). This color change was proportionally correlated with increasing the temperature from 44 to 63 °C. The UTCFH organogel composed of urea and push-π-pull hydrazone type tricyanofuran chromophore immobilized physically in the urea organogel was found to function as a temperature-driven chromic thermometer. This chromogenic UTCFH organogel in DMSO displayed a phase transition at 41–48 °C. The morphological properties of the gel internal fibrous nanostructure (80–120 nm) were monitored by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The colorimetric measurements were monitored by UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy. The chromogenic thermometer demonstrated a good reversibility without fatigue. The mechanism accounting for thermochromism of UTCFH organogel is proposed.

Khattab T. Recent Advances in Cellulose-Based Biosensors for Medical Diagnosis

Cellulose has attracted much interest, particularly in medical applications such as advanced biosensing devices. Cellulose could provide biosensors with enhanced biocompatibility, biodegradability and non-toxicity, which could be useful for biosensors. Thus, they play a significant role in environmental monitoring, medical diagnostic tools, forensic science, and foodstuff processing safety applications. This review summarizes the recent developments in cellulose-based biosensors targeting the molecular design principles toward medical detection purposes. The recognition/detection mechanisms of cellulose-based biosensors demonstrate two major classes of measurable signal generation, including optical and electrochemical cellulosic biosensors. As a result of their simplicity, high sensitivity, and low cost, cellulose-based optical biosensors are particularly of great interest for including label-free and label-driven (fluorescent and colorimetric) biosensors. There have been numerous types of cellulose substrates employed in biosensors, including several cellulose derivatives, nano-cellulose, bacterial cellulose, paper, gauzes, and hydrogels. These kinds of cellulose-based biosensors were discussed according to their preparation procedures and detection principle. Cellulose and its derivatives with their distinctive chemical structure have demonstrated to be versatile materials, affording a high-quality platform for accomplishing the immobilization process of biologically active molecules into biosensors. Cellulose-based biosensors exhibit a variety of desirable characteristics, such as sensitivity, accuracy, convenience, quick response, and low-cost. For instance, cellulose paper-based biosensors are characterized as being low-cost and easy to operate, while nano-cellulose biosensors are characterized as having a good dispersion, high absorbance capacity, and large surface area. Cellulose and its derivatives have been promising materials in biosensors which could be employed to monitor various bio-molecules, such as urea, glucose, cell, amino acid, protein, lactate, hydroquinone, gene, and cholesterol. The future interest will focus on the design and construction of multifunctional, miniaturized, low-cost, environmentally friendly, and integrated biosensors. Thus, the production of cellulose-based biosensors is very important.
