Sensitized Lanthanide Photoluminescence Based Sensors–a Review

A sodium carboxymethyl cellulose-induced emission and gelation system for time-dependent information encryption and anti-counterfeiting

Many lanthanide complexes do not form gel or even exhibit characteristic luminescence of lanthanide ions, which limits their applications in many fields. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a third component that can not only promote emission but also gel the lanthanide complex system to construct new smart materials such as time-dependent information encryption and anti-counterfeiting materials. Herein, a luminescent lanthanide metallogel was successfully prepared by using the third component sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC) to induce the gelation and luminescence of the complex (H3L/Tb3+) of 4,4',4″-((benzene-1,3,5-tricarbonyl)tris(azanediyl)) tris(2-hydroxybenzoic acid) (H3L) and Tb3+. The H3L/Tb3+ complex itself does not form gel and has no characteristic luminescence of Tb3+. Moreover, the multicolor emission of H3L/Tb3+/NaCMC gels was prepared based on Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) platforms to obtain a high-security level information encryption and anti-counterfeiting materials. These multicolor emission gels exhibit emission color tunability with time dependence due to the different energy transfer efficiencies at each pH node controlled by glucono-δ-lactone hydrolysis time. Based on the time response characteristics, the time-dependent information encryption and anti-counterfeiting materials are developed.

Dual Optical Response Strategy for the Detection of Cytochrome c Using Highly Luminescent Lanthanide-Based Nanotubular Sensor Arrays

Here, we demonstrate a label-free dual optical response strategy for the detection of cytochrome c (Cyt c) with ultrahigh sensitivity using highly luminescent lanthanides containing inorganic-organic hybrid nanotubular sensor arrays. These sensor arrays are formed by the sequential incorporation of the photosensitizers 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN) or 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen), and trivalent lanthanide terbium ions (Tb3+) into sodium lithocholate (NaLC) nanotube templates. Our sensing platform relies on the detection and quantification of Cyt c in solution by providing dual photoluminescence quenching responses from the nanotubular hybrid arrays in the presence of Cyt c. The large quenching of the sensitized Tb3+ emission within the DHN/Phen-Tb3+-NaLC nanotubular sensor arrays caused by the strong binding of the photosensitizers to Cyt c provides an important signal response for the selective detection of Cyt c. This long-lived lanthanide emission response-based sensing strategy can be highly advantageous for the detection of Cyt c in a cellular environment eliminating background fluorescence and scattering signals through time-gated measurements. The DHN containing nanotubular sensor arrays (DHN-NaLC and DHN-Tb3+-NaLC) provide an additional quenching response characterized by a unique spectral valley splitting with quantized quenching dip on the DHN fluorescence emission. This spectral quenching dip resulting from efficient FRET between the protein bound DHN photosensitizer and the heme group of Cyt c serves as an important means for specific detection and quantification of Cyt c in the concentration range of 0-30 μM with a low detection limit of around 20 nM.

Metal-Organic Framework with Near-Infrared Luminescence for "Switch-on" Determination of Kaempferol and Quercetin by the Antenna Effect

The establishment of a reliable and sensitive method for the detection of flavonoids, such as kaempferol (Kae) and quercetin (Que), is important and challenging in food chemistry and pharmacology because numerous structural analogues may interfere with the detection. Until now, designing an efficient switch-on fluorescence sensing strategy for Kae and Que was still in the unachievable stage. In this work, a switch-on near-infrared (NIR) luminescence sensing assay for Kae and Que was fabricated based on a metal-organic framework (MOF) called IQBA-Yb for the first time. The fluorescence enhancing mechanism was that analytes served as additional "antenna" of Yb³⁺, leading to the efficient switch-on NIR emission under excitation at 467 nm. Meanwhile, the combination results of experiment and theoretical calculation revealed that there existed hydrogen bonds between Kae, Que, and the MOF skeleton, further promoting the energy transfer between the analyte and Yb³⁺ and facilitating fluorescence enhancement response. The developed probe possessed excellent sensing capability for Kae and Que, accompanied by a wide linear range (0.04-70, 0.06-90 μM), low detection limit (0.01, 0.06 μM), and short response time (20 min, 6 min), which was used to determine the Kae and Que contents in Green Lake and eatable Que samples with satisfactory results.

Modular Assembly of Isostructural Mixed-Ligand Uranyl Coordination Polymers Based on a Patterning Strategy

Controlling the orderly assembly of molecular building blocks for the formation of the desired architectural, chemical, and physical properties of the resulting solid-state materials remains a long-term goal and deserves to be examined. In this work, we propose a patterning strategy for modular assembly and structural regulation of mixed-ligand uranyl coordination polymers (CPs) through the combination of couples of organic ligands with complementary molecular geometry and well-matched coordination modes. By using a 5-(p-tolyldiazenyl)isophthalic acid ligand (H₂ptdi) with different rigid linear bicarboxylic acid linkers to construct a well-defined ladder-like pattern, five novel isostructural uranyl coordination polymers, [(UO)₂(ptdi)(bdc)_0.5](dma) (1), [(UO)₂(ptdi)(bpdc)_0.5](dma) (2), [(UO)₂(ptdi)(tpdc)_0.5](dma) (3), [(UO)₂(ptdi)(ndc)_0.5](dma) (4), and [(UO)₂(ptdi) (pdc)_0.5](dma) (5) {H₂bdc, 1,4-dicarboxybenzene; H₂bpdc, 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid; H₂tpdc, terphenyl-4,4″-dicarboxylic acid; H₂ndc, 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid; H₂pdc, 1,6-pyrenedicarboxylic acid; [dma]⁺, [(CH₃)₂NH₂]⁺}, were successfully synthesized. Structural analysis reveals that 1-5 have similar ladder-like units but different sizes of one-dimensional nanochannels and interlayer spacing due to the different lengths and widths of the linkers. Because of the changes in interlayer spacing of these isostructural cationic frameworks, differences in the performance of Eu³⁺ ion exchange with [dma]⁺ are observed. Moreover, those compounds with high phase purity have been further characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and luminescence spectroscopy, element analysis, PXRD and UV spectroscopy. Among them, compound 3 with strong fluorescence can selectively detect Fe³⁺ over several competing metal cations in aqueous solution. This work not only provides a feasible patterning method for effectively regulating the modular synthesis of functional coordination polymers but also enriches the library of uranyl-based coordination polymers with intriguing structures and functionality.
