Cross‐sectional study on knowledge and attitude of telemedicine in medical students of Nepal

Embracing the Future of Health Care: Investigating Medical Students' Willingness to Become Online Doctors

Purpose: With the rapid advancement of technology, online health care services are becoming increasingly prominent. This study aims to investigate medical students' perceptions, attitudes, and readiness to adopt online health care services. Methods: Based on a literature review, this study constructed a conceptual model describing the relationships among medical students' perception, personality traits, and usage intention, grounded in the Technology Acceptance Model and Technology Readiness Index (TRI). The data for this study were collected from January to February 2023 through a questionnaire survey at Wenzhou Medical University, China. The proposed hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling through AMOS software. Results: Out of the 340 respondents, 281 (82.6%) validly responded. Among these, 58.4% of medical students agreed and strongly agreed with the intention to become an online doctor. Within the TRI's motivational factors, optimism positively and significantly affected perceived usefulness (PU) and perceived ease of use (PEOU). Innovativeness also significantly enhanced PEOU. Among the inhibitory factors, insecurity was found to have a negative and statistically significant influence on PU. The rest of the dimensions did not have a significant effect on either PU or PEOU. Importantly, both PU and PEOU demonstrated a direct and substantial effect on usage intention. Conclusions: This study emphasizes the significance of comprehending medical students' readiness to adopt the role of online doctors in shaping the future of health care. By equipping medical students with the necessary skills and competencies, health care institutions can effectively leverage the full potential of online health care services while ensuring the provision of high-quality, accessible, and patient-centered care in the digital era.

The impact of digital healthcare and teledentistry on dentistry in the 21st Century: a survey of Hungarian dentists

BACKGROUND

The era of digitalization has arrived in the field of dentistry. Teledentistry (TD), the use of digital solutions in dentistry, is already used in practice; however, only some possibilities are considered. During the COVID-19 pandemic, remote patient monitoring and patient communication had to be solved with TD, thus causing a rapid spread of new tools. In addition to digital workflows, patient communication, AI, and online forums are also available.

METHODS

An online self-administered survey was developed for the study. The Hungarian Medical Chamber contacted potential respondents in a newsletter or e-mail. The Evasys survey system was used. The weighting procedure was executed for gender, age group, and type of settlement. A digital dental index variable was created and built with a linear regression model as a dependent variable. Explanatory variables are advantages, disadvantages, what would be necessary, experienced needs from the patients, and age.

RESULTS

A total of 171 dentists completed the survey. The best-known digital technologies are online conferences (96.5%), E-prescriptions (94.6%), and digital impressions (86.0%). Unawareness is the highest in the field of artificial intelligence in dentistry (50.5%), store-forward solutions (43.5%), and real-time solutions (41.8%). The digital dental index is 14.24 (standard deviation (SD) = 5.5), with a high power of the model.

CONCLUSION

Hungarian dentists need to be made aware of all the possibilities of TD. In addition to digital workflows, store-forward and real-time solutions can be beneficial to substitute face-to-face visits. TD can be used effectively to monitor oral cavity changes and develop dental confidence and proper oral care habits. Our survey suggests that it is necessary and inevitable to integrate TD into both graduate and postgraduate education, which may form the basis of primary health care in the next decade.

Telemedicine perception and interest among medical students at the University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, 2023

BACKGROUND

Telemedicine is becoming an integral part of healthcare. Training medical students in telemedicine is encouraged by many medical organizations. However, in the United Arab Emirates in particular, most medical schools have not incorporated it into their curriculum. Therefore, this study aims to assess medical students' perceptions and interest in telemedicine teaching at the University of Sharjah, UAE.

METHODS

A questionnaire-based survey was built based on the current literature and was distributed to all medical students at the University of Sharjah between February and March 2023. The questionnaire assessed the participants for their demographic data, access to and use of digital devices, exposure to and beliefs related to telemedicine, and their medical school experience with distance learning and telemedicine. The data were analyzed via simple statistics, and the Chi-square test was used to assess the associated factors affecting the participants' interest in receiving telemedicine teaching.

RESULTS

The questionnaire had a 70.4% (547/777) response rate. The mean age (SD) of the participants was 20.7 years (1.57), and the majority were female (68.4%). Over 98% of the students reported having easy access to and being comfortable with using computers and the internet. Most students (90.5%) believed that the medical school curriculum should include teaching in telemedicine; however, 78.2% of these students stated that it should be included as an elective course. The participants' interest in receiving teaching in telemedicine had a statistically significant association with the following factors: being female, being familiar with telemedicine, having read literature on telemedicine, having beliefs that telemedicine is an opportunity to improve current medical practice, that its use should be encouraged, that it has an important role to play in healthcare, that it does not pose greater threat to current medical practice, having a preference to continue distance learning at medical school and having an interest in incorporating telemedicine in their future careers.

CONCLUSIONS

It is an ideal time to incorporate telemedicine into the medical curriculum at the University of Sharjah with most students expressing interest in it. However, further research is needed to assess its applicability to other medical schools in the country and elsewhere.

Knowledge and Perception of Telemedicine among Medical Students of the University of Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria

Background

Telemedicine has promising potential to address the challenges faced by healthcare systems in developing countries, in providing equitable access to quality care. However, the practice of telemedicine is generally poor in these countries. The success of telemedicine like any technology depends on numerous factors including users' knowledge and perceptions. Hence, this study aimed to examine the knowledge and perceptions of telemedicine among medical students at the University of Jos.

Methodology

This was a cross-sectional study among 305 clinical medical students selected through a stratified sampling technique. A self-administered questionnaire consisting of a 28-item 5-point Likert response scale was used to collect data, comprising 13 items for knowledge, 8 for the perception of benefits, and 7 for the perception of ease of use of telemedicine. Data was analyzed using IBM-SPSS.

Results

One hundred and eleven (36.4%) participants had good knowledge of telemedicine, while 113 (37.1%) had a good perception of the benefits and 103 (33.8%) had a good perception of the ease of use. Respondents with a good knowledge of telemedicine were about five times more likely (OR = 5.24, 95% CI = 3.15 - 8.69) to have a good perception of the benefits and about eight times more likely (OR = 8.33, 95% CI = 4.57 - 14.26) to have a good perception of ease of use.

Conclusions

Few medical students possess desirable levels of knowledge and perceptions of telemedicine which portrays a gap in the medical education curriculum. Therefore, training, and educational opportunities are recommended to improve their knowledge and perception of telemedicine.

Attitude, awareness, and knowledge of telemedicine among medical students: A systematic review of cross‐sectional studies

Background and Aims

The success of every new technology depends on numerous factors, including specialists' knowledge and perceptions of the concept, acquired attitude skills, and work environments. This systematic review aimed to examine medical students' knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of telemedicine.

Methods

Studies were obtained from the PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science databases on June 9, 2022. We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses guidelines. Cross‐sectional studies that examined medical students' knowledge, attitude, and perceptions of telemedicine approaches were considered inclusion criteria. Titles and abstracts were independently screened based on eligibility criteria. Articles that did not meet the inclusion criteria were excluded from this review. After that, the complete texts were retrieved and screened by two separate researchers based on the eligibility criteria. Disputes were resolved by discussion. The same checklist was used for data extraction. To assess the quality of the studies entering this study, the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for analytical cross‐sectional studies was used.

Results

In total, 10 eligible articles were found through this review. The sample size of the studies ranged from 60 to 3312 participants, or 6172 participants on the whole. The medical students' attitudes toward telemedicine were evaluated in eight included studies. Many of these studies (seven cases) reported positive and promising perspectives on telemedicine. However, in one study, participants revealed moderate attitudes toward online health information and online health experience sharing (p < 0.05). Students' knowledge of the telemedicine approach was evaluated in eight included studies. Many of these studies (five cases) reported that students possessed an extensively poor knowledge of telemedicine's uses. In three other studies, two reported moderate and one disclosed desirable levels of students' knowledge. All the included studies attributed medical students' poor knowledge to the lack of, and thus failure of, educational courses in this field.

Conclusion

The evidence obtained from this review reveals that medical students possess positive and promising attitudes toward telemedicine technology for education, treatment, and care. However, their knowledge levels were extremely insufficient, and many had not passed any educational courses in this respect. Such results can foreground the health and education policymakers' obligations for planning, training, and empowering digital health and telemedicine literacy among medical students as the primary players in social health.
