Ecological risk assessment of the effects of neonicotinoid insecticides on northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) in the South Texas Plains Ecoregion

Wildlife ecotoxicology of plant protection products: knowns and unknowns about the impacts of currently used pesticides on terrestrial vertebrate biodiversity

Agricultural practices are a major cause of the current loss of biodiversity. Among postwar agricultural intensification practices, the use of plant protection products (PPPs) might be one of the prominent drivers of the loss of wildlife diversity in agroecosystems. A collective scientific assessment was performed upon the request of the French Ministries responsible for the Environment, for Agriculture and for Research to review the impacts of PPPs on biodiversity and ecosystem services based on the scientific literature. While the effects of legacy banned PPPs on ecosystems and the underlying mechanisms are well documented, the impacts of current use pesticides (CUPs) on biodiversity have rarely been reviewed. Here, we provide an overview of the available knowledge related to the impacts of PPPs, including biopesticides, on terrestrial vertebrates (i.e. herptiles, birds including raptors, bats and small and large mammals). We focused essentially on CUPs and on endpoints at the subindividual, individual, population and community levels, which ultimately linked with effects on biodiversity. We address both direct toxic effects and indirect effects related to ecological processes and review the existing knowledge about wildlife exposure to PPPs. The effects of PPPs on ecological functions and ecosystem services are discussed, as are the aggravating or mitigating factors. Finally, a synthesis of knowns and unknowns is provided, and we identify priorities to fill gaps in knowledge and perspectives for research and wildlife conservation.

Impacts of neonicotinoids on biodiversity: a critical review

Neonicotinoids are the most widely used class of insecticides in the world, but they have raised numerous concerns regarding their effects on biodiversity. Thus, the objective of this work was to do a critical review of the contamination of the environment (soil, water, air, biota) by neonicotinoids (acetamiprid, clothianidin, imidacloprid, thiacloprid, thiamethoxam) and of their impacts on terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity. Neonicotinoids are very frequently detected in soils and in freshwater, and they are also found in the air. They have only been recently monitored in coastal and marine environments, but some studies already reported the presence of imidacloprid and thiamethoxam in transitional or semi-enclosed ecosystems (lagoons, bays, and estuaries). The contamination of the environment leads to the exposure and to the contamination of non-target organisms and to negative effects on biodiversity. Direct impacts of neonicotinoids are mainly reported on terrestrial invertebrates (e.g., pollinators, natural enemies, earthworms) and vertebrates (e.g., birds) and on aquatic invertebrates (e.g., arthropods). Impacts on aquatic vertebrate populations and communities, as well as on microorganisms, are less documented. In addition to their toxicity to directly exposed organisms, neonicotinoid induce indirect effects via trophic cascades as demonstrated in several species (terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates). However, more data are needed to reach firmer conclusions and to get a clearer picture of such indirect effects. Finally, we identified specific knowledge gaps that need to be filled to better understand the effects of neonicotinoids on terrestrial, freshwater, and marine organisms, as well as on ecosystem services associated with these biotas.

Contamination of neonicotinoid insecticides in source water and their fate during drinking water treatment in the Dongguan section of the Pearl River

Neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs) as well as their metabolites are highly mobile on the subsurface and can potentially contaminate drinking water sources; however, their pollution status and fate in the drinking water system remains ambiguous. In this study, six parent NEOs and two characteristic metabolites were measured in drinking water source protection area (source water, n = 52) and two related drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) (n = 88) located in the Dongguan section of the Pearl River. The ubiquitous of NEOs was observed in source water with the mean concentration of total NEOs (ΣNEOs) at 240 ng/L. Although advanced DWTP (A-DWTP; range: 26 % to 100 %) showed better removals of ΣNEOs and all individual NEOs rather than those in conventional DWTP (C-DWTP; range: -53 % to 28 %), the removals were still low for acetamiprid (ACE, 26 %), thiacloprid (THD, 59 %), thiamethoxam (THM, 56 %) and N-desmethyl-acetamiprid (N-dm-ACE, 45 %) in A-DWTP. Removal rates were positive in chlorination (48 %), final stage of sedimentation (F-Sed, 24 %), and granular activated carbon (GAC) filter effluent (19 %) in A-DWTP. It worthy to note that ΣNEOs has high negative removal rates at the start stage of sedimentation (S-Sed, -83 %), middle stage of sedimentation (M-Sed, -47 %), and sand filter effluent (-42 %) water in C-DWTP, which resulted in negative removals of ΣNEOs (-9.6 %), imidacloprid (IMI, -22 %), clothianidin (CLO, -37 %), flupyradifurone (FLU, -76 %), and N-dm-ACE (-29 %) in C-DWTP. Residual levels of NEOs were high in source water, and their low or negative removals in DWTPs should be highly concerning. Results would fill the existing knowledge gap of NEOs in aquatic environment and provide a scientific dataset for policy-making on pollution control and environmental protection.

Photolysis mechanism of eleven insecticides under simulated sunlight irradiation: Kinetics, pathway and QSAR

Insecticides are widely used in crop protection against insects and frequently detected in aquatic environment. Photolysis kinetics are directly related with exposure assessment and risk assessment. However, the photolysis mechanism of neonicotinoid insecticides with different structures has not been studied and compared systematically in the literature. In this paper, the photolysis rate constants in water were determined for eleven insecticides under irradiation of simulated sunlight. At the same time, the photolysis mechanism and effect of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on their photolysis were studied. The results showed that photolysis rates of eleven insecticides vary in a large range. The photolysis rates of nitro-substituted neonicotinoids and butenolide insecticide are much faster than that of cyanoimino-substituted neonicotinoids and sulfoximine insecticide. The ROS scavenging activity assays reveal that direct photolysis dominates the degradation of seven insecticides and, on the other hand, self-sensitized photolysis dominates four insecticides. The shading-effect from DOM can reduce the direct photolysis rates, on the other hand, ROSs generated by triplet-state DOM (³DOM*) can also accelerate photolysis of insecticides. According to the photolytic products identified from HPLC-MS, these eleven insecticides have different photolysis pathways. Six insecticides are degraded from the removal of nitro group from their parent compounds and four insecticides are degraded through ·OH reaction or singlet oxygen (¹O₂) reaction. QSAR (quantitative structure-activity relationship) analysis showed that photolysis rate was directly related to the energy gap between the highest occupied molecular orbital to the lowest unfilled molecular orbital (E_gap = E_LUMO-E_HOMO) and dipole moment (δ). These two descriptors reflect the chemical stability and reactivity of insecticides. The pathways developed from identified products and the molecular descriptors of QSAR models can well verify the photolysis mechanisms of eleven insecticides.

Pesticide contamination in agro-ecosystems: toxicity, impacts, and bio-based management strategies

Continuous rise in application of pesticides in the agro-ecosystems in order to ensure food supply to the ever-growing population is of greater concern to the human health and the environment. Once entered into the agro-ecosystem, the fate and transport of pesticides is determined largely by the nature of pesticides and the soil attributes, in addition to the soil-inhabiting microbes, fauna, and flora. Changes in the soil microbiological actions, soil properties, and enzymatic activities resulting from pesticide applications are the important factors substantially affecting the soil productivity. Disturbances in the microbial community composition may lead to the considerable perturbations in cycling of major nutrients, metals, and subsequent uptake by plants. Indiscriminate applications are linked with the accumulation of pesticides in plant-based foods, feeds, and animal products. Furthermore, rapid increase in the application of pesticides having long half-life has also been reported to contaminate the nearby aquatic environments and accumulation in the plants, animals, and microbes surviving there. To circumvent the negative consequences of pesticide application, multitude of techniques falling in physical, chemical, and biological categories are presented by different investigators. In the present study, important findings pertaining to the pesticide contamination in cultivated agricultural soils; toxicity on soil microbes, plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates; effects on soil characteristics; and alleviation of toxicity by bio-based management approaches have been thoroughly reviewed. With the help of bibliometric analysis, thematic evolution and research trends on the bioremediation of pesticides in the agro-ecosystems have also been highlighted.
