Abstract
We report the molecular recognition properties of Pillar[n]MaxQ (P[n]MQ) toward a series of (methylated) amino acids, amino acid amides, and post-translationally modified peptides by a combination of 1H NMR, isothermal titration calorimetry, indicator displacement assays, and molecular dynamics simulations. We find that P6MQ is a potent receptor for N-methylated amino acid side chains. P6MQ recognized the H3K4Me3 peptide with Kd = 16 nM in phosphate buffered saline.

Abstract
A supramolecular host-guest FRET pair based on a carboxyfluorescein-labelled cucurbit[7]uril (CB7-CF, as acceptor) and the fluorescent dye 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI, as donor) is developed for sensing of DNA. In comparison to the commercial DNA staining dye SYBR Green I, the new chemosensing ensemble offers dual-emission signals, which allows a linear ratiometric response over a wide concentration range.

Abstract
Cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) as a "protective agent" can effectively inhibit the [4+4] photochemical reaction of 1,1'-(butane-1,4-diyl)bis(2-aminopyridine)bromide (DPAD) by host-guest interaction between CB[7] and DPAD. In addition, the host-guest complex DPAD-CB[7] as a supramolecular sensor can detect the concentration of 1-adamantanamine with good sensitivity and selectivity because of the guest competitive complexation.

Abstract
The effect of inclusion complex formation on the photochromic behavior of a spirobenzopyran dye and its merocyanine isomer was studied in aqueous solution using cucurbit[8]uril (CB8) as a host. The merocyanine (MC) and protonated merocyanine (MCH(+)) were the most stable forms both in water and inside the cavity of CB8. The equilibrium constant of 1:1 complexation with CB8 was found to be 1.7 × 10(5) and 2.0 × 10(6) M(-1) for the former and latter species, respectively. The encapsulation led to significant change in the rate of the photoinduced and thermal photochromic transformations and hindered the hydrolysis of MC. The effect of CB8 on the reaction kinetics strongly altered with pH. The transition from the spiropyran form to trans-MC in a thermal reaction had 33 kJ mol(-1) lower activation energy and more than 5 orders of magnitude smaller Arrhenius pre-exponential factor in CB8 than in water.
