Abstract
The corneal epithelium (CE) is the outermost layer of the cornea with constant turnover, relative stability, remarkable plasticity, and compensatory properties to mask alterations in the underlying stroma. The advent of quantitative imaging modalities capable of producing epithelial thickness mapping (ETM) has made it possible to characterize better the different patterns of epithelial remodeling. In this comprehensive synthesis, we reviewed all available data on ETM with different methods, including very high-frequency ultrasound (VHF-US) and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in normal individuals, corneal or systemic diseases, and corneal surgical scenarios. We excluded OCT studies that manually measured the corneal epithelial thickness (CET) (e.g., by digital calipers) or the CE (e.g., by confocal scanning or handheld pachymeters). A comparison of different CET measuring technologies and devices capable of producing thickness maps is provided. Normative data on CET and the possible effects of gender, aging, diurnal changes, refraction, and intraocular pressure are discussed. We also reviewed ETM data in several corneal disorders, including keratoconus, corneal dystrophies, recurrent epithelial erosion, herpes keratitis, keratoplasty, bullous keratopathy, carcinoma in situ, pterygium, and limbal stem cell deficiency. The available data on the potential role of ETM in indicating refractive surgeries, planning the procedure, and assessing postoperative changes are reviewed. Alterations in ETM in systemic and ocular conditions such as eyelid abnormalities and dry eye disease and the effects of contact lenses, topical medications, and cataract surgery on the ETM profile are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the variance in corneal epithelial thickness (CET) and limbal epithelial thickness (LET) according to the age and skull type by using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in normal dogs. ANIMALS AND PROCEDURES This study used an eye each from 46 dogs (24 brachycephalic and 22 non-brachycephalic dogs) assessed to have clear corneas. Each dog was classified according to age into groups 1 (0-5 years), 2 (6-10 years), and 3 (>11 years). OCT imaging was performed on the central cornea for CET and perpendicular to the quadrant of the limbus for LET. The average of the maximum LET (maxLET) value was measured in four eye quadrants. RESULTS Corneal epithelial thickness was not significantly different according to age in brachycephalic and non-brachycephalic dogs. Visualization of the limbal invagination was better when the maxLET was thick. Nasal and temporal maxLETs were significantly thicker than superior and inferior maxLETs in non-brachycephalic dogs. In brachycephalic dogs, there was a significant decrease in nasal maxLET with age (rs = -0.489, p = .015). Significant differences between brachycephalic and non-brachycephalic dogs were observed in nasal maxLET (p = .024) and temporal maxLET (p = .011). CONCLUSIONS Invagination was better visualized in the nasal and temporal limbal quadrants of non-brachycephalic dogs compared with brachycephalic dogs, and the maxLETs of the regions were thicker than those of the brachycephalic dogs. CET and LET measurements using SD-OCT can help in clinical assessment and research on ocular surface diseases in dogs.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To measure the corneal thickness (CT), corneal epithelial thickness (CET), and corneal stromal thickness (CST) in patients affected by type 2 diabetes mellitus with good glycemic control and without any signs of diabetic retinopathy using anterior-segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). METHODS 60 eyes of 30 diabetic patients and 60 normal eyes of 30 healthy subjects underwent AS-OCT, evaluation of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), slit-lamp biomicroscopy, tear film breakup time (TBUT), Schirmer I test and fundus examination. The CT, CET, and CST maps generated corresponded to a 6-mm diameter area of the cornea that was divided into 17 sectors. We compared the CT, CET, and the CST of each sector obtained in the diabetic group with those obtained in the control group. RESULTS No significant difference in terms of age, gender, BCVA, IOP, TBUT, and Schirmer I test between the two study groups was observed. The CT, CET, and CST in the central section were significantly thickened in diabetic patients than in controls (p<0.001). Also, each paracentral and midperipheral sector was significantly increased in patients compared to controls (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS The evaluation of the CT, CET, and CST by AS-OCT could be a valid and non-invasive biomarker in patients affected by diabetes mellitus, useful in early diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to assess the corneal epithelial thickness (CET) of the 9-mm diameter zone in patients treated using topical antiglaucoma medications and to evaluate the factors associated with CET changes. Methods Seventy-five patients treated using topical antiglaucoma medications and 65 healthy subjects were included in this cross-sectional study. Each patient completed the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire and underwent examinations including the Schirmer I test, tear breakup time (TBUT), and fluorescein staining. CET mapping of the 9-mm diameter zone was performed using RTVue XR. The CET of the different analyzed zones was compared between groups. The relationship between CET and confounding factors was investigated. Results The patient group had a significantly shorter TBUT, shorter Schirmer I test, and greater fluorescein staining than those of the control group (all P < 0.05). The mean CET of patients with glaucoma was significantly lower than that of controls in the central, paracentral, mid-peripheral, and peripheral zones (all P < 0.001). Age affected the CET in the paracentral, mid-peripheral, and peripheral zones (all P < 0.01). The number of medications affected the CET in the central, paracentral, and mid-peripheral zones (all P < 0.05). The duration of treatment affected the CET in the central and peripheral zones (all P < 0.05). Conclusions Use of topical IOP-lowering medications leads to epithelial thinning in the 9-mm diameter zone in glaucomatous eyes. Epithelial protection should be considered in older patients and patients treated with multiple medications from the early stages of long-term topical antiglaucoma therapy. Translational Relevance The 9-mm diameter CET mapping by using widefield optical coherence tomography (OCT) can be a valuable and convenient method to assess the ocular surface damage in patients with topical antiglaucoma therapy.

Abstract
Glaucoma patients often suffer from ocular surface disease (OSD) caused by the chronic administration of topical anti-glaucoma medications, especially in cases of long-term therapy with preserved or multiple drugs. Additionally, glaucoma surgery may determine ocular surface changes related to the formation and location of the filtering bleb, the application of anti-mitotic agents, and the post-operative wound-healing processes within the conjunctiva. Recently, several studies have evaluated the role of advanced diagnostic imaging technologies such as in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) and anterior segment-optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) in detecting microscopic and macroscopic features of glaucoma therapy-related OSD. Their clinical applications are still being explored, with recent particular attention paid to analyzing the effects of new drug formulations and of minimally invasive surgical procedures on the ocular surface status. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge about the main changes of the ocular surface identified at IVCM and AS-OCT in glaucoma patients under medical therapy, or after surgical treatment.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to evaluate corneal epithelial thickness (CET), corneal densitometry (CD) in 84 myopic eyes (57 patients) more than 22 years after photorefractive keratectomy, using anterior segment-optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) and Scheimpflug imaging system. The CET was significantly higher in all operated eyes than in unoperated eyes in central sector. A statistically significant increase in CD in corneal anterior layer of central sector was shown in groups of operated eyes with greater ablation depth respect to unoperated eyes. While there was no significant difference in CD between the operated eyes groups with lower ablation depth and unoperated eyes. A significant trend toward higher values in anterior CD with deeper ablations in central sector was found. These noninvasive imaging techniques allow to better understand the corneal remodeling process after photoablation and to monitor the patients over time.
