One-component waterborne in vivo cross-linkable polysiloxane coatings for artificial skin

Study of the Effect of Hydrolysis Time on the Mechanical Properties of Polysiloxane Microcapsules

It is known that the microstructure and thereby the mechanical properties of membranes constituting microcapsules are sensitive to parameters such as precursor concentration and pH. In the case of polysiloxane microcapsules, the oligomers, which are already formed in the continuous oil phase, because of the inherent moisture content in the oil phase, deposit on the membrane surface, resulting in the formation of a microstructure with a hairy layer. An electrodeformation investigation shows that the deposition of these oligomers is predominant in the smaller microcapsules compared to the larger ones and results in strain hardening and plasticity in the microcapsule membrane at high deformation. However, if the hydrolysis time during the synthesis of microcapsules is controlled, a smooth morphology (with a diminished hairy layer) can be realized for smaller capsules, as well. This work, using the electrodeformation method, demonstrates significant viscoelasticity and plasticity in the response of the capsules to applied electric stress and establishes an equivalence between simple spring and dashpot element-based phenomenological models with respect to the membrane properties using a linearized viscoelastic elasto-electrohydrodynamic model. The model can capture plasticity and strain hardening that are otherwise missed in simplified elasticity-based models.

Dermatillomania: Strategies for Developing Protective Biomaterials/Cloth

Dermatillomania or skin picking disorder (SPD) is a chronic, recurrent, and treatment resistant neuropsychiatric disorder with an underestimated prevalence that has a concerning negative impact on an individual’s health and quality of life. The current treatment strategies focus on behavioral and pharmacological therapies that are not very effective. Thus, the primary objective of this review is to provide an introduction to SPD and discuss its current treatment strategies as well as to propose biomaterial-based physical barrier strategies as a supporting or alternative treatment. To this end, searches were conducted within the PubMed database and Google Scholar, and the results obtained were organized and presented as per the following categories: prevalence, etiology, consequences, diagnostic criteria, and treatment strategies. Furthermore, special attention was provided to alternative treatment strategies and biomaterial-based physical treatment strategies. A total of six products with the potential to be applied as physical barrier strategies in supporting SPD treatment were shortlisted and discussed. The results indicated that SPD is a complex, underestimated, and underemphasized neuropsychiatric disorder that needs heightened attention, especially with regard to its treatment and care. Moreover, the high synergistic potential of biomaterials and nanosystems in this area remains to be explored. Certain strategies that are already being utilized for wound healing can also be further exploited, particularly as far as the prevention of infections is concerned.

Design and Characterization of Elastic Artificial Skin Containing Adenosine-Loaded Solid Lipid Nanoparticles for Treating Wrinkles

Adenosine (AD), which is used for treating wrinkles, exhibits poor skin permeation. The aim of the present study was to develop a cross-linked silicone-based cellulose elastomer as an elastic artificial skin for the treatment of skin wrinkles, a biocompatible lipid-based nano-carrier for enhancing the skin permeation of AD, and a formulation consisting of the lipid-based carrier incorporated in the elastic artificial skin. AD-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) were prepared using a double-emulsion method. Particle characteristics and mechanical properties of SLNs and elastic artificial skin, respectively, were assessed. Skin permeation was evaluated using SkinEthic RHE tissue, a reconstructed human epidermis model. The mean particle size and zeta potential for SLNs ranged from 123.57 to 248.90 nm and -13.23 to -41.23 mV, respectively. The components of neither SLNs nor the elastic artificial skin were cytotoxic, according to cell- and tissue-viability assays and EU classification. SLNs and the elastic artificial skin exhibited sustained drug release for 48 h. The amount of AD released from SLNs and elastic artificial skin was approximately 10 times and 5 times higher, respectively, than that from AD solution. Therefore, elastic artificial skin incorporated with AD-loaded SLNs may serve as a promising topical delivery system for cosmeceutical treatment of skin wrinkles.

Pickering emulsion approach for fabrication of waterborne cross-linkable polydimethylsiloxane coatings with high mechanical performance

HYPOTHESIS

The Pickering emulsion approach has been frequently employed to fabricate various emulsions. However, the direct formation of cross-linked polymer films from Pickering emulsions and double functions (emulsified and mechanical reinforcement) of Pickering agents have not been sufficiently reported.

EXPERIMENTS

Fumed silica was co-modified with vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) and hexamethyl disilylamine (HMDS) and was further adopted to emulsify vinyl or hydrogen dimethicone. The as-obtained Pickering emulsions were mixed with Karstedt catalyst capsules to produce one-component waterborne cross-linkable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coatings that were subsequently transformed into elastic films after drying at ambient temperature.

FINDINGS

The co-modification of fumed silica with VTMS/HMDS is shown to balance the Pickering emulsion effect and film-forming ability of the coatings. Greater amounts of grafted VTMS/HMDS or higher modified silica dosages demonstrated better Pickering emulsion effects. Nevertheless, because Pickering agents hinder the coalescence of silicone oil droplets, the appropriate modified silica concentration is crucial for achieving the highest cross-link density and thus the highest mechanical strength. The grafted CC groups can endow the modified silica with hydrosilylation reactivity and can thus additionally contribute to the mechanical performance of PDMS film. In addition, the Pickering emulsion approach is shown to be superior to the traditional emulsion approach for acquiring waterborne coatings with high mechanical performance.
