Why Can Cationic Halogen Bond Donors Activate the Ritter-Type Solvolysis of Benzhydryl Bromide but Cationic Hydrogen Bond Donors Can Not?

It is found by experiment that the cationic halogen bond donors (cationic iodoimidazolium compounds) can activate the Ritter-type solvolysis of benzhydryl bromide, while the cationic hydrogen bond donors (cationic imidazolium compounds) could not. To understand the activation mechanism, various noncovalent interactions between benzhydryl bromide and a series of activators in solution, including halogen bond, hydrogen bond, lone pair···π/π+, and C-H···π/π+, were explored theoretically. Our study revealed that the activation difference can be contributed by the variation of the noncovalent interactions. For halogen bond donors, the successful activation is attributed by halogen bond and lone pair···π. The halogen bonds mainly provide the stabilization energy of the ion-pair complex with the help of lone pair···π. For hydrogen-bond donors, the contribution of the hydrogen bond is unable to compensate the like-charge repulsion arising from the generation of the carbocation, leading to the unsuccessful activation. In general, lone pair···π makes a difference.

Application of Halogen Bonding to Organocatalysis: A Theoretical Perspective

The strong, specific, and directional halogen bond (XB) is an ideal supramolecular synthon in crystal engineering, as well as rational catalyst and drug design. These attributes attracted strong growing interest in halogen bonding in the past decade and led to a wide range of applications in materials, biological, and catalysis applications. Recently, various research groups exploited the XB mode of activation in designing halogen-based Lewis acids in effecting organic transformation, and there is continual growth in this promising area. In addition to the rapid advancements in methodology development, computational investigations are well suited for mechanistic understanding, rational XB catalyst design, and the study of intermediates that are unstable when observed experimentally. In this review, we highlight recent computational studies of XB organocatalytic reactions, which provide valuable insights into the XB mode of activation, competing reaction pathways, effects of solvent and counterions, and design of novel XB catalysts.

The mechanism of ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide by ICl3 catalysts: Halogen bond catalysis or participating in reactions?

The mechanism of ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide by iodine trichloride (ICl₃ ) catalyst has been explored by using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and three catalytic pathways were proposed. The first and second pathways belong to the halogen bond catalysis, and the third pathway involves the ICl₃ catalysts participating in reactions. When the carbonyl group was maintained involved in the reaction and activated catalytically by the halogen bond, there are two possible pathways. The first pathway involves only one transition state, and the second pathway requires two transition states. There is another pathway in which ICl₃ directly participates in the reaction, it is named the third pathway. Two different transition states of the four-membered rings are generated successively, the transfer of I─O bonds determined the progress of the reaction. Theoretical calculations in this work provide the most basic understanding of ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide by ICl₃ catalysts. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
