Extraction Behavior of Acidic Phosphorus-Containing Compounds to Some Metal Ions: A Combination Research of Experimental and Theoretical Investigations

To provide feasible methods for the extraction of valuable metals from spent batteries or low-grade primary ores, the extraction behavior of some representative acidic phosphorus-containing compounds (APCCs) as extractants is evaluated from the perspective of experimental and theoretical investigations in this work. Aqueous solutions containing five metal ions, Ca(II), Co(II), Mg(II), Mn(II), and Ni(II), were made to simulate leaching liquids, and the extraction of these metals was investigated. A simplified calculated model was used to evaluate the interaction between each extractant and metal ions. The calculation results agree well with the experimental tests in trend. This work not only provides potential extractants for the extraction of valuable metals from spent batteries or low-grade primary ores but also demonstrates the practicability of the simplified calculation model.

A computational scheme of pKa values based on the three-dimensional reference interaction site model self-consistent field theory coupled with the linear fitting correction scheme

A scheme for quantitatively computing the acid dissociation constant, pKa, of hydrated molecules is proposed. It is based on the three-dimensional reference interaction site model self-consistent field (3D-RISM-SCF) theory coupled with the linear fitting correction (LFC) scheme. In LFC/3D-RISM-SCF, pKa values of target molecules are evaluated using the Gibbs energy difference between the protonated and unprotonated states calculated by 3D-RISM-SCF and the parameters fitted by the LFC scheme to the experimental values of training set systems. The pKa values computed by LFC/3D-RISM-SCF show quantitative agreement with the experimental data.

Prediction of Aqueous pK a Values for Guanidine-Containing Compounds Using Ab Initio Gas-Phase Equilibrium Bond Lengths

In this work, we demonstrate the existence of linear relationships between gas-phase equilibrium bond lengths of the guanidine skeleton of 2-(arylamino)imidazolines and their aqueous pK _a value. For a training set of 22 compounds, in the most stable conformation of their lowest energy tautomeric form, three bonds were found to exhibit r ² and q ² values >0.95 and root-mean-squared-error of estimation values ≤0.25 when regressed individually against pK _a. The equations describing these one-bond-length linear relationships, in addition to a multiple linear regression model using all three bond lengths, were then used to predict the experimental pK _a values of an external test set of further 27 derivatives. The optimal protocol we derive here shows an overall mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.20 and standard deviation of errors of 0.18 for the test set. Predictions for a second test set of diphenyl-based bis(2-iminoimidazolidines) yielded an MAE of 0.27 and a standard deviation of 0.10. The predictive power of the optimal model is further demonstrated by its ability to correct erroneously reported experimental values. Finally, a previously established guanidine model is recalibrated at a new level of theory, and predictions are made for novel phenylguanidine derivatives, showing an MAE of just 0.29. The protocols established and tested here pass both of Roy's modern and stringent MAE-based criteria for a "good" quantitative structure-activity relationship/quantitative structure-property relationship model predictivity. Notably, the ab initio bond length high correlation subset protocol developed in this work demonstrates lower MAE values than the Marvin program by ChemAxon for all test sets.

Molecular acidity: An accurate description with information-theoretic approach in density functional reactivity theory

Molecular acidity is one of the important physiochemical properties of a molecular system, yet its accurate calculation and prediction are still an unresolved problem in the literature. In this work, we propose to make use of the quantities from the information-theoretic (IT) approach in density functional reactivity theory and provide an accurate description of molecular acidity from a completely new perspective. To illustrate our point, five different categories of acidic series, singly and doubly substituted benzoic acids, singly substituted benzenesulfinic acids, benzeneseleninic acids, phenols, and alkyl carboxylic acids, have been thoroughly examined. We show that using IT quantities such as Shannon entropy, Fisher information, Ghosh-Berkowitz-Parr entropy, information gain, Onicescu information energy, and relative Rényi entropy, one is able to simultaneously predict experimental pKa values of these different categories of compounds. Because of the universality of the quantities employed in this work, which are all density dependent, our approach should be general and be applicable to other systems as well. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
