Theoretical evidence for bond stretch isomerism in Grubbs olefin metathesis

Thermodynamics of phase transitions in Zintl clusters from density functional theory: making and breaking of bonds in Ba3Ge4

Density functional theory, in conjunction with the quasi-harmonic approximation, has been used to study the equilibrium between the orthorhombic and tetragonal phases of Ba3Ge4. A transition from the high-temperature tetragonal phase containing isolated Ge46- units to the low-temperature orthorhombic phase, where precisely half of the Ge46- units are polymerised along one axis, is predicted at 930 K, somewhat higher than the experimental value of 630 K. An analysis of the phonon density of states shows that the lower entropy of the orthorhombic phase is not associated directly with the polymerisation of the Ge46- units, but rather with the contraction of the unit cell, which raises the frequencies of ion-ion modes involving the relative motions of the Ba2+ and Ge46- units. Calculations also predict that a third, as yet unobserved, p-tetragonal phase, where all of the Ge46- units are polymerised to form two separate chains running in orthogonal directions, might be accessible at pressures close to 1 GPa.

The Janus face of high trans-effect carbenes in olefin metathesis: gateway to both productivity and decomposition

Ruthenium–cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) catalysts, used at ppm levels, can enable dramatically higher productivities in olefin metathesis than their N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) predecessors. A key reason is the reduced susceptibility of the metallacyclobutane (MCB) intermediate to decomposition via β-H elimination. The factors responsible for promoting or inhibiting β-H elimination are explored via density functional theory (DFT) calculations, in metathesis of ethylene or styrene (a representative 1-olefin) by Ru–CAAC and Ru–NHC catalysts. Natural bond orbital analysis of the frontier orbitals confirms the greater strength of the orbital interactions for the CAAC species, and the consequent increase in the carbene trans influence and trans effect. The higher trans effect of the CAAC ligands inhibits β-H elimination by destabilizing the transition state (TS) for decomposition, in which an agostic MCB C_β–H bond is positioned trans to the carbene. Unproductive cycling with ethylene is also curbed, because ethylene is trans to the carbene ligand in the square pyramidal TS for ethylene metathesis. In contrast, metathesis of styrene proceeds via a ‘late’ TS with approximately trigonal bipyramidal geometry, in which carbene trans effects are reduced. Importantly, however, the positive impact of a strong trans-effect ligand in limiting β-H elimination is offset by its potent accelerating effect on bimolecular coupling, a major competing means of catalyst decomposition. These two decomposition pathways, known for decades to limit productivity in olefin metathesis, are revealed as distinct, antinomic, responses to a single underlying phenomenon. Reconciling these opposing effects emerges as a clear priority for design of robust, high-performing catalysts.

Hexene hydrogenation catalysed by the complex monohydrid complexes: A DFT study of associated vs dissociated pathways

A DFT study was conducted to elucidate the mechanism of hexene hydrogenation catalysed by a series of ruthenium (II) monohydride catalysts: RuH(CO)(Cl)(LL') where L and L' represent C(cyclohexyl), Me (methyl) and IMe (N, N '-bis (mesityl) imidazole-2-ylidene). This investigation explores the feasibility of two different proposed mechanisms: the first describes the dissociated pathway and exploits a single phosphine complex. The second is the associative one and uses a two phosphines complex. The detailed pathways have been explored for the catalyst model with L = L' = Me. Three possibilities have been supported for the dissociative route. Pathway (A) begins with a phosphine release. The initial addition of hexane or a dihydrogen molecule on the ruthenium catalyst generates the pathways (B) and (C), respectively. Pathways (B) and (C) merge with the pathway (A) before and after the first proton transfer, respectively. Activation energies in the first hydrogen migration (the key-step of the mechanism) are close. Therefore, both mechanisms (A) and (B) are possible but the former is more probable. The substitution of the catalyst model RuHCl(CO)(PMe₃)₂ by the real catalysts RuHCl(CO)(PCy₃)₂ or RuHCl(CO)(IMes)(PMe₃) shows no significant influence on the energetic barriers of hexene hydrogenation mechanism. The energy profile of the first hydrogen migration for the catalyst RuHCl(CO)(PCy₃)₂ is characteristic of a concerted asynchronous mechanism while our calculation led to two separated synchronous steps when the model catalyst is used. The associative pathway (D) integrates the two experimentally detected intermediates and generates activation energies close to those of dissociative pathways (A) and (B). The rationale to explain the experimentally detected species is achieved by considering the four proposed mechanisms where they occur simultaneously and with different rates (ie. The dissociative mechanism has the highest rate).

Origins of the Stereoretentive Mechanism of Olefin Metathesis with Ru-Dithiolate Catalysts

A comprehensive computational study of stereoretentive olefin metathesis with Ru-dithiolate catalysts has been performed. We have determined how the dithiolate ligand enforces a side-bound mechanism and how the side-bound mechanism allows for stereochemical control over the forming olefin. We have used density functional theory (DFT) and ligand steric contour maps to elucidate the origins of stereoretentive metathesis with the goal of understanding how to design a new class of E-selective metathesis catalysts.
