Differential Cross Sections for the H + H2S → H2 + SH Reaction: A Full-Dimensional State-to-State Quantum Dynamics Study

We utilized the time-dependent wave packet approach to compute the first full-dimensional (6D) state-to-state differential cross sections (DCSs) for the title reaction with the initial nonrotating H2S in the ground and the (100) and (001) vibrational excited states. It is found that the fundamental symmetric and asymmetric stretching excitations of H2S exhibit almost the same influence on the DCS, but unlike the H + H2O → H2 + OH reaction, they greatly increase the vibrational excitation of both the H2 and SH products. The hot vibrational state distributions of H2 are consistent with the prediction of product energy disposal by Polanyi's rules for an early barrier reaction. Because the incident H atom reacts strongly with both the ground and excited S-H states, the large populations of product SH(v2 = 1), which are very close to the relative reactivity of the initial S-H(v = 0) state, can still be explained by the local mode picture for H2S and the nonreacting SH bond's spectator nature.

12-Membered Ring Carbides with Stabilization of Actinide Atoms

Actinide (Th and U) carbides as the potential nuclear fuels in nuclear reactors require basic research in order to understand the thermodynamic stability and performance of these substances. Here we report the structural characterization and bonding analyses of [C₁₂], ThC₁₂, and UC₁₂ clusters via a global-minimum search combined with relativistic quantum chemistry calculations to elucidate the stability and bonding nature of An-C bonds. We predict that these [C₁₂], ThC₁₂, and UC₁₂ compounds have a planar structure with C_6h, D_12h, and D_12h symmetry, respectively. [C₁₂] has a hyperconjugation structure containing alternating single and double bonds. The significant stabilization when forming AnC₁₂ predominantly comes from the electrostatic interaction between An⁴⁺ and [C₁₂]^4- and also from a certain degree of orbital interaction between the An 5f6d7s valence shell and [C₁₂] π orbitals. The covalent character of the An-C bonds exhibits a direct in-plane σ-type overlap of the C 2p-derived MOs of [C₁₂] and the An 5f_ϕ AO, thus leading to an unprecedented electronic configuration of d¹f¹ for U in UC₁₂. Our results present an example of the novel properties that can be expected for actinide compounds and would provide the knowledge required to obtain novel structures of AnC₁₂ in future experiments.

A neural network potential energy surface for the F + H2O ↔ HF + OH reaction and quantum dynamics study of the isotopic effect

We report here a global and full dimensional neural network potential energy surface for the F + CH₄ reaction and investigate the isotopic effect on the total reaction probabilities using the time-dependent wave packet method.

Mode- and Bond-Selected Reaction of H with Local Mode Molecule HDS

Understanding mode- and bond-selected dynamics of elementary chemical reactions is of central importance in molecular reaction dynamics. The initial state-selected time-dependent wave packet method is employed to study the mode and bond selectivity, isotopic branching ratio, and temperature dependence of rate constants of the two-channel reaction of H with local mode molecule HDS. For the abstraction channel, fundamental excitation of the HS (DS) bond of the reactant HDS significantly enhances the H-abstraction (D-abstraction) reaction, whose efficacy is higher than the same amount of translational energy except at low energies just above the energy threshold. This is in sharp contrast to the prediction of Polanyi rules: translational energy is more efficient than vibrational energy in enhancing a reaction with an early barrier. The recent sudden vector projection model is then applied to rationalize the observed mode specificity, which, however, shows that the translational mode vector has a larger coupling with the reaction coordinate than the stretching vector of the active bond, implying a reversed relative efficacy on promoting the reaction as well. In contrast, the mode and bond specificity for the exchange channel is not as strong as for the abstraction channel due to the regulation of the shallow well along the reaction path.

Neural Network Potential Energy Surfaces for Small Molecules and Reactions

We review progress in neural network (NN)-based methods for the construction of interatomic potentials from discrete samples (such as ab initio energies) for applications in classical and quantum dynamics including reaction dynamics and computational spectroscopy. The main focus is on methods for building molecular potential energy surfaces (PES) in internal coordinates that explicitly include all many-body contributions, even though some of the methods we review limit the degree of coupling, due either to a desire to limit computational cost or to limited data. Explicit and direct treatment of all many-body contributions is only practical for sufficiently small molecules, which are therefore our primary focus. This includes small molecules on surfaces. We consider direct, single NN PES fitting as well as more complex methods that impose structure (such as a multibody representation) on the PES function, either through the architecture of one NN or by using multiple NNs. We show how NNs are effective in building representations with low-dimensional functions including dimensionality reduction. We consider NN-based approaches to build PESs in the sums-of-product form important for quantum dynamics, ways to treat symmetry, and issues related to sampling data distributions and the relation between PES errors and errors in observables. We highlight combinations of NNs with other ideas such as permutationally invariant polynomials or sums of environment-dependent atomic contributions, which have recently emerged as powerful tools for building highly accurate PESs for relatively large molecular and reactive systems.
