DFT, DLPNO-CCSD(T), and NEVPT2 benchmark study of the reaction between ferrocenium and trimethylphosphine

Assessment of the applicability of DFT methods to [Cp*Rh]-catalyzed hydrogen evolution processes

The present computational study provides a benchmark of density functional theory (DFT) methods in describing hydrogen evolution processes catalyzed by [Cp*Rh]-containing organometallic complexes. A test set was composed of 26 elementary reactions featuring chemical transformations and bonding situations essential for the field, including the emerging concept of non-innocent Cp* behavior. Reference values were obtained from a highly accurate 3/4 complete basis set and 6/7 complete PNO space extrapolated DLPNO-CCSD(T) energies. The performance of lower-level extrapolation procedures was also assessed. We considered 84 density functionals (DF) (including 13 generalized gradient approximations (GGA), nine meta-GGAs, 33 hybrids, and 29 double-hybrids) and three composite methods (HF-3c, PBEh-3c, and r2SCAN-3c), combined with different types of dispersion corrections (D3(0), D3BJ, D4, and VV10). The most accurate approach is the PBE0-DH-D3BJ (MAD of 1.36 kcal mol-1) followed by TPSS0-D3BJ (MAD of 1.60 kcal mol-1). Low-cost r2SCAN-3c composite provides a less accurate but much faster alternative (MAD of 2.39 kcal mol-1). The widely used Minnesota-family M06-L, M06, and M06-2X DFs should be avoided (MADs of 3.70, 3.94, and 4.01 kcal mol-1, respectively).

Ab Initio Kinetics of Electrochemical Reactions Using the Computational Fc0/Fc+ Electrode

The current state-of-the-art electron-transfer modeling primarily focuses on the kinetics of charge transfer between an electroactive species and an inert electrode. Experimental studies have revealed that the existing Butler-Volmer model fails to satisfactorily replicate experimental voltammetry results for both solution-based and surface-bound redox couples. Consequently, experimentalists lack an accurate tool for predicting electron-transfer kinetics. In response to this challenge, we developed a density functional theory-based approach for accurately predicting current peak potentials by using the Marcus-Hush model. Through extensive cyclic voltammetry simulations, we conducted a thorough exploration that offers valuable insights for conducting well-informed studies in the field of electrochemistry.

Multi-Level Protocol for Mechanistic Reaction Studies Using Semi-Local Fitted Potential Energy Surfaces

In this work, we propose a multi-level protocol for routine theoretical studies of chemical reaction mechanisms. The initial reaction paths of our investigated systems are sampled using the Nudged Elastic Band (NEB) method driven by a cheap electronic structure method. Forces recalculated at the more accurate electronic structure theory for a set of points on the path are fitted with a machine learning technique (in our case symmetric gradient domain machine learning or sGDML) to produce a semi-local reactive potential energy surface (PES), embracing reactants, products and transition state (TS) regions. This approach has been successfully applied to a unimolecular (Bergman cyclization of enediyne) and a bimolecular (SN2 substitution) reaction. In particular, we demonstrate that with only 50 to 150 energy-force evaluations with the accurate reference methods (here complete-active-space self-consistent field, CASSCF, and coupled-cluster singles and doubles, CCSD) it is possible to construct a semi-local PES giving qualitative agreement for stationary-point geometries, intrinsic reaction coordinates and barriers. Furthermore, we find a qualitative agreement in vibrational frequencies and reaction rate coefficients. The key aspect of the method's performance is its multi-level nature, which not only saves computational effort but also allows extracting meaningful information along the reaction path, characterized by zero gradients in all but one direction. Agnostic to the nature of the TS and computationally economic, the protocol can be readily automated and routinely used for mechanistic reaction studies.

A larger basis set describes atomization energy core-valence correction better than a higher-order coupled-cluster method

The accuracy of coupled-cluster methods for the computation of core-valence correction to atomization energy was assessed. Truncation levels up to CCSDTQP were considered together with (aug-)cc-pwCVnZ (n = D, T, Q, 5) basis sets and three different extrapolation techniques (canonical and flexible Helgaker formula and Riemann zeta function extrapolation). With the exception of CCSD, a more accurate correction can be obtained from a larger basis set using a lower-level coupled-cluster method, and not vice versa. For the CCSD(T) level, it also implies faster computations with modern codes. We also discussed the importance of moving to higher-order or all-electron methods for geometry optimizations. The present study provides the general knowledge needed for the most accurate state-of-the-art computations.

Phosphorescent Properties of Heteroleptic Ir(III) Complexes: Uncovering Their Emissive Species

In this contribution, we assess the computational machinery to calculate the phosphorescence properties of a large pool of heteroleptic [Ir(C^N)2(N^N)]+ complexes (where N^N is an ancillary ligand and C^N is a cyclometalating ligand) including their phosphorescent rates and their emission spectra. Efficient computational protocols are next proposed. Specifically, different flavors of DFT functionals were benchmarked against DLPNO-CCSD(T) for the phosphorescence energies. The transition density matrix and decomposition analysis of the emitting triplet excited state enable us to categorize the studied complexes into different cases, from predominant triplet ligand-centered (3LC) character to predominant charge-transfer (3CT) character, either of metal-to-ligand charge transfer (3MLCT), ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (3LLCT), or a combination of the two. We have also calculated the vibronically resolved phosphorescent spectra and rates. Ir(III) complexes with predominant 3CT character are characterized by less vibronically resolved bands as compared to those with predominant 3LC character. Furthermore, some of the complexes are characterized by close-lying triplet excited states so that the calculation of their phosphorescence properties poses additional challenges. In these scenarios, it is necessary to perform geometry optimizations of higher-lying triplet excited states (i.e., Tn). We demonstrate that in the latter scenarios all of the close-lying triplet species must be considered to recover the shape of the experimental emission spectra. The global analysis of computed emission energies, shape of the computed emission spectra, computed rates, etc. enable us to unambiguously pinpoint for the first time the triplet states involved in the emission process and to provide a general classification of Ir(III) complexes with regard to their phosphorescence properties.

QM/MM Study of the Reaction Mechanism of Thermophilic Glucuronoyl Esterase for Biomass Treatment

Hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass, composed of a lignin-carbohydrate-complex (LCC) matrix, is critical for producing bioethanol from glucose. However, current methods for LCC processing require costly and polluting processes. The fungal Thermothelomyces thermophila glucuronoyl esterase (TtGE) is a promising thermophilic enzyme that hydrolyses LCC ester bonds. This study describes the TtGE catalytic mechanism using QM/MM methods. Two nearly-degenerate rate-determining transition states were found, with barriers of 16 and 17 kcal ⋅ mol^-1 , both with a zwitterionic nature that results from a proton interplay from His346 to either the Ser213-hydroxyl or the lignin leaving group and the rehybridisation of the ester moiety of the substrate to an alkoxide. An oxyanion hole, characteristic of esterases, was provided by the conserved Arg214 through its backbone and sidechain. Our work further suggests that a mutation of Glu267 to a non-negative residue will decrease the energetic barrier in ca. -5 kcal ⋅ mol^-1 , improving the catalytic rate of TtGE.

Computational Protocol to Calculate the Phosphorescence Energy of Pt(II) Complexes: Is the Lowest Triplet Excited State Always Involved in Emission? A Comprehensive Benchmark Study

The reliable calculation of phosphorescence energies of phosphor materials is at the core of designing efficient phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs). Therefore, it is of paramount importance to have a robust computational protocol to perform those calculations in a black-box manner. In this work, we use Domain-Based Local Pair Natural Orbital Coupled Cluster theory with single, double, and perturbative triple excitation (DLPNO-CCSD(T)) calculations to attain the phosphorescence energies of a large pool of Pt(II) complexes. Several approaches to incorporate relativistic effects in our calculations were tested. In addition, we have used the DLPNO-CCSD(T) values (i.e., our best theoretical values) to assess the performance of different flavors of density functional theory including pure, hybrid, meta-hybrid, and range-separated functionals. Among the tested functionals, the M06HF functional provides the best values compared with the DLPNO-CCSD(T) ones, with a mean absolute deviation (MAD) value of 0.14 eV. In its turn, and thanks to the increased accuracy achieved in the calculation of phosphorescence energies, we also demonstrate that not all of the investigated complexes emit from their lowest-lying triplet state (T₁). The outlier complexes include different complex photophysical scenarios and both Kasha and anti-Kasha types of complexes. Finally, we provide a general computational protocol to pre-screen whether T₁ is actually the emissive state and to accurately calculate the phosphorescence energies of Pt(II) complexes.
