One-Pot Synthesis of Copper Iodide-Polypyrrole Nanocomposites

A novel one-pot chemical synthesis of functional copper iodide-polypyrrole composites, CuI-PPy, has been proposed. The fabrication process allows the formation of nanodimensional metal salt/polymer hybrid structures in a fully controlled time- and concentration-dependent manner. The impact of certain experimental conditions, viz., duration of synthesis, sequence of component addition and concentrations of the intact reagents on the structure, dimensionality and yield of the end-product was evaluated in detail. More specifically, the amount of marshite CuI within the hybrid composite can be ranged from 60 to 90 wt.%, depending on synthetic conditions (type and concentration of components, process duration). In addition, the conditions allowing the synthesis of nano-sized CuI distributed inside the polypyrrole matrix were found. A high morphological stability and reproducibility of the synthesized nanodimensional metal-polymer hybrid materials were approved. Finally, the electrochemical activity of the formed composites was verified by cyclic voltammetry studies. The stability of CuI-PPy composite deposited on the electrodes was strongly affected by the applied anodic limit. The proposed one-pot synthesis of the hybrid nanodimensional copper iodide-polypyrrole composites is highly innovative, meets the requirements of Green Chemistry and is potentially useful for future biosensor development. In addition, this study is expected to generally contribute to the knowledge on the hybrid nano-based composites with tailored properties.

Mineralization of gaseous acetaldehyde by electrochemically generated Co(III) in H2SO4 with wet scrubber combinatorial system

Electrochemically generated Co(III) mediated catalytic room temperature incineration of acetaldehyde, which is one of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), combined with wet scrubbing system was developed and investigated. Depending on the electrolyte's type, absorption come removal efficiency is varied. In presence of electrogenerated Co(III) in sulfuric acid, acetaldehyde was mineralized to CO2 and not like only absorption in pure sulfuric acid. The Co(III) mediated catalytic incineration led to oxidative absorption and elimination to CO2, which was evidenced with titration, CO2, and cyclic voltammetric analyses. Experimental conditions, such as current density, concentration of mediator, and gas molar flow rate were optimized. By the optimization of the experimental conditions, the complete mineralization of acetaldehyde was realized at a room temperature using electrochemically generated Co(III) with wet scrubber combinatorial system.

Electrochemical and spectroscopic study of the self-assembling mechanism of normal and chelating alkanethiols on copper

The self-assembly of aliphatic thiol (RSH), dithiol (R(SH)(2)), and dithiocarboxylic acid (RS(2)H) onto mildly oxidized and highly oxidized copper was studied in real time by in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Ex situ characterization of the films was carried out using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In situ EIS studies found a very fast adsorption of RSH, R(SH)(2), and RS(2)H (within 10-15 s). This fast adsorption step is followed by the long-term additional adsorption and consolidation of SAM. However, the self-assembly of RS(2)H passes through an intermediate step of molecule rearrangement for around 10 to 30 min after around 2 to 7 min of self-assembly. The binding of both sulfur moieties of R(SH)(2) with Cu happens simultaneous. The oxide reduction capacity of RSH, R(SH)(2), and RS(2)H was good. However, the XPS studies showed the decomposition of RS(2)H-based SAMs to Cu(2)S. Monolayers prepared on both mildly oxidized and heavily oxidized Cu with R(SH)(2) had the highest stability. Monolayers of RS(2)H showed the least stability on both mildly oxidized and heavily oxidized Cu. Although RSH-based SAMs had good organization on both mildly oxidized and highly oxidized Cu, R(SH)(2)-based SAMs did not show good organization in either case. The RS(2)H monolayer had good organization only on mildly oxidized Cu.
