Physicochemical and Redox Characteristics of Fe Ion-doped CeO2Nanoparticles

Enhanced Oxygen Storage Capacity of Porous CeO2 by Rare Earth Doping

CeO2 is an important rare earth (RE) oxide and has served as a typical oxygen storage material in practical applications. In the present study, the oxygen storage capacity (OSC) of CeO2 was enhanced by doping with other rare earth ions (RE, RE = Yb, Y, Sm and La). A series of Undoped and RE-doped CeO2 with different doping levels were synthesized using a solvothermal method following a subsequent calcination process, in which just Ce(NO3)3∙6H2O, RE(NO3)3∙nH2O, ethylene glycol and water were used as raw materials. Surprisingly, the Undoped CeO2 was proved to be a porous material with a multilayered special morphology without any additional templates in this work. The lattice parameters of CeO2 were refined by the least-squares method with highly pure NaCl as the internal standard for peak position calibrations, and the solubility limits of RE ions into CeO2 were determined; the amounts of reducible-reoxidizable Cen+ ions were estimated by fitting the Ce 3d core-levels XPS spectra; the non-stoichiometric oxygen vacancy (VO) defects of CeO2 were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively by O 1s XPS fitting and Raman scattering; and the OSC was quantified by the amount of H2 consumption per gram of CeO2 based on hydrogen temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR) measurements. The maximum [OSC] of CeO2 appeared at 5 mol.% Yb-, 4 mol.% Y-, 4 mol.% Sm- and 7 mol.% La-doping with the values of 0.444, 0.387, 0.352 and 0.380 mmol H2/g by an increase of 93.04, 68.26, 53.04 and 65.22%. Moreover, the dominant factor for promoting the OSC of RE-doped CeO2 was analyzed.

Effect of the Preparation Method on the Physicochemical Properties and the CO Oxidation Performance of Nanostructured CeO2/TiO2 Oxides

Ceria-based mixed oxides have been widely studied in catalysis due to their unique surface and redox properties, with implications in numerous energy- and environmental-related applications. In this regard, the rational design of ceria-based composites by means of advanced synthetic routes has gained particular attention. In the present work, ceria–titania composites were synthesized by four different methods (precipitation, hydrothermal in one and two steps, Stöber) and their effect on the physicochemical characteristics and the CO oxidation performance was investigated. A thorough characterization study, including N2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR) was performed. Ceria–titania samples prepared by the Stöber method, exhibited the optimum CO oxidation performance, followed by samples prepared by the hydrothermal method in one step, whereas the precipitation method led to almost inactive oxides. CeO2/TiO2 samples synthesized by the Stöber method display a rod-like morphology of ceria nanoparticles with a uniform distribution of TiO2, leading to enhanced reducibility and oxygen storage capacity (OSC). A linear relationship was disclosed among the catalytic performance of the samples prepared by different methods and the abundance of reducible oxygen species.

Physico-chemical properties and catalytic activity of the sol-gel prepared Ce-ion doped LaMnO3 perovskites

Ce-doped LaMnO₃ perovskite ceramics (La_1−xCe_xMnO₃) were synthesized by sol-gel based co-precipitation method and tested for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol using molecular oxygen. Benzyl alcohol conversion of ca. 25–42% was achieved with benzaldehyde as the main product. X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), BET surface area, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature-programmed reduction (H₂-TPR), temperature-programmed oxidation (O₂-TPO), FT-IR and UV-vis spectroscopic techniques were used to examine the physiochemical properties. XRD analysis demonstrates the single phase crystalline high purity of the perovskite. The Ce-doped LaMnO₃ perovskite demonstrated reducibility at low-temperature and higher mobility of surface O₂-ion than their respective un-doped perovskite. The substitution of Ce³⁺ ion into the perovskite matrix improve the surface redox properties, which strongly influenced the catalytic activity of the material. The LaMnO₃ perovskite exhibited considerable activity to benzyl alcohol oxidation but suffered a slow deactivation with time-on-stream. Nevertheless, the insertion of the A site metal cation with a trivalent Ce³⁺ metal cation led to an enhanced in catalytic performance because of atomic-scale interactions between the A and B active site. La_0.95Ce_0.05MnO₃ catalyst demonstrated the excellent catalytic activity with a selectivity of 99% at 120 °C.
