Synthesis and Characterization of [Zn-Al] Layered Double Hydroxides: Effect of the Operating Parameters

Recycling Fe and improving organic pollutant removal via in situ forming magnetic core-shell Fe3O4@CaFe-LDH in Fe(II)-catalyzed oxidative wastewater treatment

Due to its high efficiency, Fe(II)-based catalytic oxidation has been one of the most popular types of technology for treating growing organic pollutants. A lot of chemical Fe sludge along with various refractory pollutants was concomitantly produced, which may cause secondary environmental problems without proper disposal. We here innovatively proposed an effective method of achieving zero Fe sludge, reusing Fe resources (Fe recovery = 100%) and advancing organics removal (final TOC removal > 70%) simultaneously, based on the in situ formation of magnetic Ca-Fe layered double hydroxide (Fe3O4@CaFe-LDH) nano-material. Cations (Ca2+ and Fe3+) concentration (≥ 30 mmol/L) and their molar ratio (Ca:Fe ≥ 1.75) were crucial to the success of the method. Extrinsic nano Fe3O4 was designed to be involved in the Fe(II)-catalytic wastewater treatment process, and was modified by oxidation intermediates/products (especially those with COO- structure), which promoted the co-precipitation of Ca2+ (originated from Ca(OH)2 added after oxidation process) and by-produced Fe3+ cations on its surface to in situ generate core-shell Fe3O4@CaFe-LDH. The oxidation products were further removed during Fe3O4@CaFe-LDH material formation via intercalation and adsorption. This method was applicable to many kinds of organic wastewater, such as bisphenol A, methyl orange, humics, and biogas slurry. The prepared magnetic and hierarchical CaFe-LDH nanocomposite material showed comparable application performance to the recently reported CaFe-LDHs. This work provides a new strategy for efficiently enhancing the efficiency and economy of Fe(II)-catalyzed oxidative wastewater treatment by producing high value-added LDHs materials.

Fabrication and Characterization of Cu Nanoparticles Dispersed on ZnAl-Layered Double Hydroxide Nanocatalysts for the Oxidation of Cyclohexane

In the chemical industry, designing high-performance catalysts for the oxidation of cyclohexane into value-added products such as cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone (the combination is known as KA oil) is critical. The catalytic activity of copper nanoparticles supported on layered double hydroxide (LDH) for the liquid phase oxidation of cyclohexane was examined in this study. In this work, we have developed Cu nanoparticles supported on layered double hydroxide nanocatalysts, abbreviated as CuNPs@LDH, by the chemical reduction approach. Various physical methods were used to characterize the resulting material, including ICP-AES, XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDX, HRTEM, and BET surface area. The catalytic activity of copper nanoparticles supported on LDH was examined for the liquid phase oxidation of cyclohexane with tert-butyl hydroperoxide. CuNPs@LDH nanocatalysts with an excellent 52.3% conversion of cyclohexane with 97.2% selectivity of KA oil was obtained after 6 h at 353 K. The hot filtration test further indicated that CuNPs@LDH was a heterogeneous catalyst that could be recycled at least six times without suffering a substantial reduction in its catalytic activity.

Comparative Physicochemical and Catalytic Study of Nanocrystalline Mg-Al Hydrotalcites Precipitated with Inorganic and Organic Bases

Synthetic Mg-Al hydrotalcites (HT) are environmentally friendly solid bases frequently applied as catalysts in base catalyzed reactions. The most common synthesis method, using NaOH as precipitant, is problematized by the possibility of introducing undesired Na contamination. Alkali-free synthesis is usually performed with NH₃aq, a precipitant which is less efficient in incorporation of Mg into HT lattice. In the present work, organic bases, tetrabutylammonium hydroxide and choline hydroxide, were successfully employed as precipitating agents in a new alkali-free route of Mg-Al HT synthesis. HT solids were also obtained with inorganic bases, NH₃aq and NaOH. Characterization with X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetry/differential scanning calorimetry, confirmed the formation of nanocrystalline HT compounds with all employed bases. HT prepared with NH₃aq exhibited an Mg deficit, which was detrimental to the catalytic activity in base catalyzed reactions. The effect was attributed to the tendency of Mg²⁺ to form ammine complexes, a conclusion supported by quantum mechanical calculations. HT prepared with NaOH showed the highest crystallinity, which was unfavorable for catalytic application. The addition of starch to the synthesis medium provided a means by which to diminish the crystal size of all HT precipitates. Catalytic tests of the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of cyclohexanone demonstrated that the highest yields of ε-caprolactone were obtained with fine-crystalline HT catalysts prepared with organic bases in the presence of a starch template.

Use of Ethylamine, Diethylamine and Triethylamine in the Synthesis of Zn,Al Layered Double Hydroxides

Amines with two carbon atoms in the organic chain [ethylamine (EA), diethylamine (DEA), triethylamine (TEA)] have been used as precipitant agents to obtain a hydrotalcite-like compound with Zn (II) and Al (III) as layered cations and with nitrate anions in the interlayered region to balance the charge. This Layered Double Hydroxide was prepared following the coprecipitation method, and the effect on the crystal and particle sizes was studied. Also, the effect of submitting the obtained solids to hydrothermal post-synthesis treatment by conventional heating and microwave assisted heating were studied. The obtained solids were exhaustively characterized using several instrumental techniques, such as X-ray diffraction, Thermal Analysis (DTA and TG), Chemical Analysis, Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), determination of Particle Size Distribution and BET-Surface area. Well crystallized solids were obtained showing two possible LDH phases, depending on the orientation of the interlayer anion with respect to the brucite-like layers. The results indicated that there is a certain influence of the amine, when used as a precipitating agent, and as a consequence of the degree of substitution, on the crystallinity and particle size of the final solid obtained. The LDHs obtained using TEA exhibited higher crystallinity, which was improved after a long hydrothermal treatment by conventional heating. Regarding the shape of the particles, the formation of aggregates in the former solid was detected, which could be easily disintegrated using ultrasound treatments, producing solid powder with high crystallinity and small particle size, with homogeneous size distribution.

Mn-Fe Layered Double Hydroxide Intercalated with Ethylene-Diaminetetraacetate Anion: Synthesis and Removal of As(III) from Aqueous Solution around pH 2-11

A novel adsorbent Mn-Fe layered double hydroxides intercalated with ethylenediaminete-traacetic (EDTA@MF-LDHs) was synthesized by a low saturation coprecipitation method. The behavior and mechanism of As(III) removed by EDTA@MF-LDHs were investigated in detail in comparison with the carbonate intercalated Mn-Fe layered double hydroxides (CO₃@MF-LDHs). The results showed that EDTA@MF-LDHs had a higher removal efficiency for As(III) than As(V) with a broader pH range than CO₃@MF-LDH. The large adsorption capacity of EDTA@MF-LDHs is related to its large interlayer spacing and the high affinity of its surface hydroxyl groups. The maximum adsorption capacity for As(III) is 66.76 mg/g at pH 7. The FT-IR and XPS characterization indicated that the removal mechanism of the As(III) on EDTA@MF-LDHs include surface complexation, redox, and ion exchange.

Gas-Phase Hydrogenation of Furfural to Furfuryl Alcohol over Cu-ZnO-Al2O3 Catalysts Prepared from Layered Double Hydroxides

Several layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with general chemical composition (Cu,Zn)1−xAlx(OH)2(CO3)x/2·mH2O have been synthesized by the co-precipitation method, maintaining a (M2+/M3+) molar ratio of 3, and varying the Cu2+/Zn2+ molar ratio between 0.2 and 6.0. After calcination and reduction steps, Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts were synthesized. These catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), H2 thermoprogrammed reduction (H2-TPR), N2 adsorption-desorption at −196 °C, N2O titration, X-ray photoelectron miscroscopy (XPS), NH3-thermoprogramed desorption (NH3-TPD) and CO2- thermoprogrammed desorption (CO2-TPD). The characterization data revealed that these catalysts are mainly meso-and macroporous, where Cu, ZnO and Al2O3 are well dispersed. The catalytic results show that these catalysts are active in the gas-phase hydrogenation of furfural, being highly selective to furfuryl alcohol (FOL) and reaching the highest FOL yield for the catalyst with a Cu2+/Zn2+ molar ratio of 1. In an additional study, the influence of the aging time on the synthesis of the LDHs was also evaluated. The catalytic data revealed that the use of shorter aging time in the formation of the LDH has a beneficial effect on the catalytic behavior, since more disordered structures with a higher amount of available Cu sites is obtained, leading to a higher yield towards FOL (71% after 5 h of time-on-stream at 210 °C).

Chlorides Entrapment Capability of Various In-Situ Grown NiAl-LDHs: Structural and Corrosion Resistance Properties

In this work, various NiAl-LDH thin films, exhibiting specific surface morphologies, were developed directly on aluminum AA 6082 substrate to understand the two main characteristics of layered double hydroxide (LDH), i.e., ion-exchange behavior and barrier properties, which are found to have a significant influence on the LDH corrosion resistance properties. The as-prepared NiAl-LDH films were analyzed through the scanning electronic microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), while the corrosion behavior of the synthesized films was investigated by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic curves. The results indicated that NiAl-LDH microcrystals grow in various fashions, from porous relatively flat domains to well-developed platelet structure, with the variation of nickel nitrate to ammonium nitrate salts molar ratios. The LDH structure is observed in all cases and is found to cover the aluminum surface uniformly in the lamellar order. All the developed NiAl-LDHs are found to enhance the corrosion resistance of the aluminum substrate, specifically, a well-developed platelet structure is found to be more effective in chloride adsorptive and entrapment capabilities, which caused higher corrosion resistance compared to other developed NiAl-LDHs. The comparison of the synthesized NiAl-LDH morphologies on their ion-exchange capabilities, barrier effect and their combined effect on corrosion resistance properties is reported.

Eco-friendly nanostructured Zn–Al layered double hydroxide photocatalysts with enhanced photocatalytic activity

Zn–Al layered double hydroxides (Zn–Al LDHs) with various reaction times were synthesized by a hydrothermal method at constant pH, and they were tested for the removal of RhB with or without post-calcination treatment.
