Biodegradable Gloves for Waste Management Post-COVID-19 Outbreak: A Shelf-Life Prediction

With increased awareness on the importance of gloves arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, people are expected to continue using them even after the pandemic recedes. This scenario in a way increased the rubber solid waste disposal problem; therefore, the production of biodegradable gloves may be an option to overcome this problem. However, the need to study the shelf life of biodegradable gloves is crucial before commercialization. There are well-established models to address the failure properties of gloves as stated in the American Society for Testing and Material (ASTM) D7160. In this study, polysaccharide-based material-filled natural rubber latex (PFNRL) gloves, which are biodegradable gloves, were subjected to an accelerated aging process at different temperatures of 50-80 °C for 1-120 days. Prediction models based on Arrhenius and shift factors were used to estimate the shelf life of the PFNRL gloves. Based on the results obtained, the estimated time for the PFNRL gloves to retain 75% of their tensile strength at shelf temperature (30 °C) based on Arrhenius and shift factor models was 2.8 years. Verification on the activation energy based on the shift factor model indicated that the shelf life of PFNRL gloves is 2.9 years, which is only a 3.6% difference. The value obtained is aligned with the requirement in accordance with ASTM D7160, which states that only up to a maximum of 3 years' shelf life is allowed for the gloves under accelerated aging conditions.

Biotechnological, biomedical, and agronomical applications of plant protease inhibitors with high stability: A systematic review

Protease inhibitors (PIs) are regulatory proteins found in numerous animal tissues and fluids, plants, and microorganisms that reduce and inhibit the exacerbated and uncontrolled activity of the target proteases. Specific PIs are also effective tools for inactivating proteases involved in human diseases like arthritis, pancreatitis, hepatitis, cancer, AIDS, thrombosis, emphysema, hypertension, and muscular dystrophy among others. Plant PIs-small peptides with a high content of cystine residues in disulfide bridges-possess a remarkable resistance to heat treatment and a high stability against shifts in pH, denaturing agents, ionic strength, and proteolysis. In recent years, novel biologic activities have been reported for plant PIs, including antimicrobial, anticoagulant, antioxidant action plus inhibition of tumor-cell growth; thus pointing to possible applications in medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology. In this review, we provide a comparative overview of plant-PIs classifying them in four groups according of their thermal and pH stability (high stability and hyperstable -to temperature and to pHs-, respectively), then emphasizing the relevance of the physicochemical characteristics of these proteins for potential biotechnological and industrial applications. Finally, we analyze the biologic activities of the stable protease inhibitors previously characterized that are the most relevant to potential applications in biomedicine, the food industry, and agriculture.

Stability of sunscreens containing CePO4: proposal for a new inorganic UV filter

Inorganic UV filters have become attractive because of their role in protecting the skin from the damage caused by continuous exposure to the sun. However, their large refractive index and high photocatalytic activity have led to the development of alternative inorganic materials such as CePO4 for application as UV filters. This compound leaves a low amount of white residue on the skin and is highly stable. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical and chemical stability of a cosmetic formulation containing ordinary organic UV filters combined with 5% CePO4, and, to compare it with other formulations containing the same vehicle with 5% TiO2 or ZnO as inorganic materials. The rheological behavior and chemical stability of the formulations containing these different UV filters were investigated. Results showed that the formulation containing CePO4 is a promising innovative UV filter due to its low interaction with organic filters, which culminates in longer shelf life when compared with traditional formulations containing ZnO or TiO2 filters. Moreover, the recognized ability of CePO4 to leave a low amount of white residue on the skin combined with great stability, suggests that CePO4 can be used as inorganic filter in high concentrations, affording formulations with high SPF values.

Benefits of combinations of vitamin A, C and E derivatives in the stability of cosmetic formulations

Chemically stable ester derivatives of vitamins A, C and E have become a focus of interest for their role in the satisfactory results in skin aging treatments. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to evaluate the physical and chemical stability of a cosmetic formulation containing 1% retinyl palmitate, ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate and tocopheryl acetate, alone or in combination. In the studies of physical stability, a Brookfield rheometer was used to determine rheological behavior of formulations containing the vitamins. Chemical stability was determined by HPLC on a Shimadzu system with UV detection. Results showed that formulations had pseudoplastic behavior and that vitamins did not alter their apparent viscosity and thixotropy. In the chemical stability studies, first-order reaction equations were used for determinations of the shelf-life of vitamins derivatives considering a remaining concentration of 85%. Combined vitamins in a single formulation had a slightly lower degradation rate as compared to different preparations containing only one of the vitamins. Considering that many cosmetic formulations contain vitamin combinations it is suggested that the present study may contribute to the development of more stable formulations containing liposoluble vitamins.

Use of chimeric antibodies as positive controls in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for diagnosis of scrub typhus (infection by Orientia tsutsugamushi)

The use of human sera collected from individuals of known infected and noninfected status is necessary for the validation of diagnostic assays and for the determination of cutoff values. However, the routine inclusion of pooled human sera from infected individuals for use as positive controls in commercial assay kits has many disadvantages. Sufficient quantities of sera can be difficult to obtain, and there are ethical and safety issues to be considered. Additionally, each batch of control material requires standardization, as each will differ in antibody titer. We have genetically engineered chimeric immunoglobulin G (IgG), IgM, and IgA antibodies consisting of mouse-derived variable regions and human constant regions derived from peripheral blood lymphocytes. The chimeric nature of these antibodies allows the desired antigen specificity created through mouse immunization and hybridoma technology while retaining a human constant region required for recognition by the enzyme-conjugated antihuman signal antibody. We have investigated the potential use of chimeric IgG with specificity for the major surface antigen of Orientia tsutsugamushi as an alternative positive control for inclusion in a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit for the diagnosis of rickettsia scrub typhus (caused by infection with O. tsutsugamushi). Chimeric IgG was expressed in stably transfected CHO cells, allowing production of unlimited quantities. The purified protein was found to have a much greater specificity for the scrub typhus antigen than the serum-derived controls. The methods described could be applied to other assay kits for the detection of antibodies against infectious agents.

Stability of cosmetic formulations containing esters of Vitamins E and A: Chemical and physical aspects

Cosmetic stability prediction relies on quantitative chemical determinations of active components after certain times and in different temperatures. However, physical stability, an important parameter in skin care products is not considered in these conditions. This study proposes the determination of cosmetic stability chemical and physical parameters validated by (HPLC) chromatography and rheological measurements, respectively, using a gel-cream containing retinyl palmitate and tocopheryl acetate as a model system. The predicted shelf life addresses both the physical and chemical aspects of the system. Results emphasize the importance of studying both parameters by showing the relation of components degradation and physical stability. Moreover, they contribute to an improved understanding of physical and chemical stability aspects of cosmetic formulations, mainly if they contain Vitamins A and E derivatives.
