Abstract
This study aimed to develop and validate prediction models for incident reversible cognitive frailty (RCF) based on social-ecological predictors. Older adults aged ≥60 years from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) 2011-2013 survey were included as training set (n = 1230). The generalized linear mixed model (GLMM), eXtreme Gradient Boosting, support vector machine, random forest, and Binary Mixed Model forest were used to develop prediction models. All models were evaluated internally with 5-fold cross-validation and evaluated externally via CHARLS 2013-2015 survey (n = 1631). Only GLMM showed good discrimination (AUC = 0.765, 95% CI = 0.736, 0.795) in training set, and all models showed fair discrimination (AUC = 0.578-0.667, 95% CI = 0.545, 0.725) in internal and external validation. All models showed acceptable calibration, overall prediction performance, and clinical usefulness in training and validation sets. Older adults were divided into three groups using risk score based on GLMM, which could assist healthcare providers to predict incident RCF, facilitating early identification of high-risk population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early life stress (ELS) increases the risk of substance use disorder (SUD) in adulthood. The pathway from ELS to SUD is hypothesized to be influenced by sex. We examine the impact of ELS on adolescent first substance use, a common precursor to adult SUDs, and test for sex differences in the relationship between ELS and risk of first use of alcohol, nicotine, and marijuana. METHODS Individuals from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study (ABCD; N = 8608 US children aged 9-10 at baseline) were assessed for multiple measures of ELS (Environmental, Family, Trauma), covariates (race/ethnicity, age in months at baseline, pubertal development score), and first substance use. Cox proportional hazards regression was performed for total population and stratified by sex, generating adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) of first substance use. RESULTS One unit increase in ELS Total scores significantly increased aHRs of first use of all substances. Dimensional ELS analysis revealed associations with risk that differed across sex, type of ELS, and substance. Females with higher ELS Environmental scores display a significant increase in risk of first use across all substances, while males with higher ELS Trauma scores showed a significant increase in risk of first nicotine and marijuana use. CONCLUSIONS Findings highlight sex differences in the association of ELS Environmental and Trauma scores with the risk of first substance use, while illustrating the consistency of the association of ELS Family scores with risk. Existing family-based prevention and intervention strategies should consider addressing sex differences in adolescent substance use risk and protection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing suicidal ideation among female adolescents with smoking experience. MATERIAL AND METHODS A secondary analysis was conducted using national survey data collected in Korea in 2023, involving 1880 female adolescents with smoking experience. Complex sample logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the influencing factors. RESULTS The factors significantly associated with suicidal ideation among female adolescents included depressive symptoms, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), loneliness, stress, and habitual and intentional drug use. CONCLUSION This study is the only research that examines the factors influencing suicidal ideation among female adolescents with smoking experience, providing valuable insights for suicide prevention efforts targeting this population. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Nurses should regularly monitor the mental health status of female adolescents with smoking experience and recognize that proper education on medication use is a crucial strategy for preventing suicide, aiming to reduce suicidal ideation in this population.

Abstract
There is increasing scientific evidence linking substance use, childhood adversity, and social determinants of health. However, little research has considered the evaluation of community-level strategies to reduce substance use by increasing awareness and implementation of evidence-based strategies for preventing adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). This article lays out the conceptual framework for a $2.9 million demonstration project designed to raise awareness of the impact of ACEs on substance use, including primary prevention strategies. Communities used transformational narrative change-with an emphasis on the voices of those most impacted by ACEs and substance use-to highlight the importance of addressing social determinants of health along with primary prevention strategies. The conceptual background highlighted in this article informed media, public health, and local efforts in the three accompanying articles and invited commentary. These findings may help inform future efforts to promote community-level strategies and strengthen the evidence-base for transformational narrative change efforts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sensory impairment (SI), as prevalent condition among the elderly, presents a substantial public health burden. OBJECTIVES To investigate the association of cumulative and individual adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) with SI. METHODS Chinese residents aged 45 years and above were recruited from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2011-2018, using stratified random sampling. The number of ACEs was classified into "0 ACE", "1 to 3 ACEs", and "≥4 ACEs". SI was assessed with self-rated visual or hearing status. SI categories included single sensory impairment (SSI), which can be divided into single vision impairment and single hearing impairment. Possessing both vision impairment and hearing impairment was considered as dual sensory impairment (DSI). Longitudinal SI progression encompassed "maintained no SI", "no SI to SSI", "no SI to DSI", "maintained SSI", "SSI to DSI", and "maintained DSI". Logistic regression and restricted cubic splines models were used for analysis. RESULTS A total of 6812 participants entered the cross-sectional analysis and 5299 entered the longitudinal analysis. Compared to 0 ACE, ≥4 ACEs had a positive association with DSI (OR = 1.57, 95 % CI = 1.20-2.06) but not with single vision impairment (OR = 1.17, 95 % CI: 0.88-1.55) or single hearing impairment (OR = 1.10, 95 % CI: 0.71-1.70), and this association was observed only in females (OR = 1.73, 95 % CI = 1.20-2.51). A linear association was found between cumulative ACEs and both single vision impairment (p = 0.044) and DSI (p < 0.001). Compared to 0 ACE, ≥4 ACEs was associated with a higher risk of progression from SSI to DSI (OR = 1.71, 95 % CI = 1.03-2.84), and the maintained DSI (OR = 2.23, 95 % CI =1.37-3.65). CONCLUSION ACEs were found to be associated with an increased risk and more severe progression of SI later in life. It is imperative to address different types of ACE and incorporate sex-specific measures to mitigate the enduring sensory impact of ACEs.

Abstract
Introduction The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Healthy Brain Initiative (HBI) encourages an interdisciplinary approach to addressing the burden of subjective cognitive decline (SCD) among the aging US population as that population continues to increase. Our study is one of the first to evaluate associations between SCD and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and other modifiable risk factors to support implementation of the initiative. Methods We used multivariate logistic regression to assess data from the 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey to evaluate associations between SCD and ACEs scores and sociodemographic, behavioral, and clinical risk factors. Models were weighted to account for the complex survey design. Results Approximately 8.1% of survey respondents reported experiencing SCD within the past 12 months. Adjusted regression analysis showed that conditions such as depression (AOR, 2.85; 95% CI, 2.29-3.55), arthritis (AOR, 1.30; 95% CI, 1.05-1.60), and diabetes (AOR, 1.33; 95% CI, 1.05-1.68) were significantly associated with SCD. SCD was also associated with experiencing more than 3 falls per year (AOR, 2.95; 95% CI, 2.13-4.09), sleeping more than 9 hours per night (AOR, 2.06; 95% CI, 1.37-3.09), and physical inactivity (AOR, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.03-1.68). Two or more ACEs also significantly increased the odds of SCD (AOR, 1.69; 95% CI, 1.36-2.10). Conclusion Findings from our study can be used to inform policy, environment, and systems change efforts aimed at addressing modifiable risk factors to support healthy aging. The role of ACEs as determinants of brain health across the life course should also be considered in the design of clinical and community-based interventions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Racial/ethnic discrimination and ethnic identity, the affiliation and connection to one's ethnic group, are important for understanding alcohol, tobacco, and drug use disorders (AUD, TUD, DUD, respectively) among Hispanic/Latin American individuals. Although discrimination is a well-recognized risk factor, the role of ethnic identity is less understood. Moreover, no study has examined which of these factors is more important for informing AUD, TUD, and DUD. This information is necessary for creating effective prevention and treatment programs tailored for Hispanic/Latin American people. Herein we examined the role and relative importance of racial/ethnic discrimination and Hispanic ethnic identity on past year AUD, TUD, and DUD. METHODS Hispanic/Latin American participants of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III constituted the sample for this cross-sectional secondary data analysis. Participants (N = 7037) were 39.93 years old on average (SD = 15.32). More than half were female (56.1 %) and had family incomes below the median household income in the United States (58.7 %). Most had national origins in North America (79.3 %), including US dependent territories and Mexico. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) verified the psychometric properties of the discrimination and Hispanic ethnic identity measures. Logistic regressions, supplemented with dominance analysis, estimated the role and relative contribution of discrimination and Hispanic ethnic identity on the probability of past year AUD, TUD, and DUD. RESULTS The CFAs yielded adequate convergent validity and reliability for each construct. More racial/ethnic discrimination and a higher Hispanic ethnic identity related to a higher and lower probability of AUD, TUD, and DUD, respectively. The magnitude of the association between Hispanic ethnic identity and the probability of TUD exceeded that of racial/ethnic discrimination, but the converse was the case for AUD and DUD. CONCLUSIONS Prevention and treatment programs for TUD that highlight the value of having a strong sense of self as a member of a Hispanic ethnic group, and that encourage the individual to explore their Hispanic ancestry may prove effective among Hispanic/Latin American individuals, particularly those who have experienced racial/ethnic discrimination. Programs for AUD and DUD tailored for Hispanic Latin/American adults should also incorporate coping strategies to address experiences with racial/ethnic discrimination.

Abstract
Research suggests that exposure to adversity can lead to an increased risk of experiencing suicidal and self-injurious thoughts or behaviours, but few studies have examined whether different patterns of adversity are differentially associated with youth suicide/self-harm. The current study aims to explore the relationship between exposure to adversity across various social domains and youth self-harm and suicidality, using a person centred approach, and examines whether access to social support and a sense of safety across home, peer or school settings buffer the relationship between adversity and self-harm/suicidality. Secondary data analyses were carried out on cross-sectional self-report data collected from 4848 (Mage=15.78, SD = 0.59; 50% female) adolescents who participated in the Irish Planet Youth survey. Latent Class Analyses identified four distinct profiles of adversity; low-adversity (n = 2043, 42%); peer-adversity (n = 972, 20%); parental-adversity (n = 1189, 25%); and multiple-adversity (n = 644, 13%). Findings from logistic moderated regressions indicated that there were significant differences in self-harm and suicidality across the adversity classes. Although parental support and perceived safety at school were negatively associated with suicidality and self-harm outcomes, no significant moderation effects were observed. These findings suggest that youth who experience adversity across multiple social domains are more likely to report suicidal and self-harm thoughts and behaviours, and should be key targets for intervention/prevention efforts. While parental support and school safety may act as significant compensatory factors, further work is needed to identify the social resources that can offset the risk imposed by youth's adverse experiences.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous research has found increasing evidence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) leading to non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicidal behaviors. Most studies have focused on a certain type or timing of ACEs or the patterns of multiple types; however, few of them have examined the patterns of ACEs combined types and timing and the gender differences in the association between ACEs and self-harming behaviors. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted in three Chinese cities from November 2020 to May 2021. We asked 16,853 middle school students to anonymously complete a questionnaire to provide the details of their own ACEs and NSSI or suicidal behaviors. RESULTS Latent class analysis identified four classes: high ACEs (10 %), high abuse/neglect (20.3 %), moderate ACEs (26.7 %) and low ACEs (43 %). Logistic regression models demonstrated that students in the high ACEs, high abuse/neglect and moderate ACEs subgroups were more likely to engage in NSSI and suicidal behaviors than students with low ACEs. Compared with boys, girls had a higher probability of engaging in NSSI and suicidal behaviors when exposed to the same level of ACEs. CONCLUSION Co-occurrence of ACEs is associated with high risk of NSSI and suicidal behaviors. Our findings recognized the most dangerous patterns and latent class membership, which supply the evidence for policy makers to adopt preventive measures to protect high-risk individuals. Strategies to relieve the impact of ACEs, especially on girls, need to be considered comprehensively. LIMITATIONS The study was limited by cross-sectional design, as causality could not be confirmed. In addition, because our survey was retrospective, potential recall bias can not be ignored.

Abstract
Early life stress (ELS), such as abuse and neglect during childhood, can lead to psychiatric disorders in later life. Previous studies have suggested that ELS can cause profound changes in gene expression through epigenetic mechanisms, which can lead to psychiatric disorders in adulthood; however, studies on epigenetic modifications associated with ELS and psychiatric disorders in adolescents are limited. Moreover, how these epigenetic modifications can lead to psychiatric disorders in adolescents is not fully understood. Commonly, DNA methylation, histone modification, and the regulation of noncoding RNAs have been attributed to the reprogramming of epigenetic profiling associated with ELS. Although only a few studies have attempted to examine epigenetic modifications in adolescents with ELS, existing evidence suggests that there are commonalities and differences in epigenetic profiling between adolescents and adults. In addition, epigenetic modifications are sex-dependent and are influenced by the type of ELS. In this review, we have critically evaluated the current evidence on epigenetic modifications in adolescents with ELS, particularly DNA methylation and the expression of microRNAs in both preclinical models and humans. We have also clarified the impact of ELS on psychiatric disorders in adolescents to predict the development of neuropsychiatric disorders and to prevent and recover these disorders through personalized medicine.

Abstract
Families provide foundational contexts in which most children develop and grow. For families of children with special health care needs (CSHCN), interdisciplinary supports can build family participation capacities, beyond individualistic child supports. This single-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study sought to determine the preliminary effects of the Healthy Families Flourish Program (HFFP), a telehealth occupation-based parent coaching intervention to promote participation, cohesion, adaptability, and communication for families of CSHCN. Eleven families, including 17 parents and 27 children, completed the 10-session intervention consisting of parent education and individualized coaching. Participants completed the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure, Goal Attainment Scaling, and the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales pre-/post-intervention. Within-group comparisons showed improvements in family participation, cohesion, adaptability, and communication with Cohen's d effect sizes ranging from 0.55-3.32. Researchers found positive relationships between family participation and cohesion as well as participation and adaptability. Findings provide considerations for supporting families within socioecological contexts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Extensive evidence has demonstrated that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) predict a high risk of negative health and behavioral outcomes in later life. However, the influence of individuals' psychosocial characteristics and environmental stressors have been mostly omitted in previous research. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine the prevalence of ACEs among LGB (lesbian, gay, and bisexual) and heterosexual emerging adults, and the associations between different patterns of ACE exposure and depressive symptoms after adjusting for factors at different levels. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING A representative sample of 928 college students in Xiamen city, China was recruited. METHODS Latent class analysis was applied to identify the patterns of ACEs. A series of regression analyses were conducted to examine the associations between ACEs and depression and whether ACEs interacted with sexual identity to influence depression, after controlling for individual characteristics, family, school, and society-level factors. RESULTS Over 35 % of the participants reported they had experienced at least one type of moderate to extreme childhood maltreatment, and those who identified as LGB reported a higher level of ACE exposure. Higher levels of ACE exposure based on score and clustering approaches were associated with higher risks of depression among Chinese emerging adults. However, the associations between ACEs and depression were not significantly moderated by sexual identity. CONCLUSIONS The findings highlighted the importance of early screening for ACEs particularly among sexual minorities and of delivering tailored interventions based on ecological backgrounds. Both the traditional scoring approach and a data-driven approach can be effective in detecting the cumulative effect of ACEs.

Abstract
Based on the conservation of resources theory, this study aimed to investigate the mediating role of depressive symptoms and the moderating role of mindfulness in the association between harsh parenting and adolescent suicidal ideation in the Chinese cultural context. Using a three-wave (i.e., three months apart) data collection among 371 Chinese adolescents, this study found that depressive symptoms mediated the relationship between harsh parenting and adolescent suicidal ideation. Moreover, adolescent mindfulness mitigated the effects of harsh parenting on suicidal ideation, as well as the indirect effect of harsh parenting on suicidal ideation via depressive symptoms. The theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Abstract
Anxiety and depression have been growing global mental health problems. The following studies explored the effect of interactive VR scenarios to find a low-cost and high-efficiency solution. Study 1 designed a 2 (anxiety and depression state) × 4 (interactive VR scenarios) experiment, the results of 20 participants showed that the designed scenarios had good restoration and presence, assisting to improve depression mood for people with mild to moderate anxiety and depression. Study 2 further investigated the intervention effects of two environment types (urban and park) and four interactive activities (automatic viewing, free-roaming, fishing, and watering plants in the park environment), based on data from a 10-minute experiment conducted by 195 participants with mild to moderate anxiety and depression. The subjective scales, EEG and EMG, and scenario experience were analyzed and the results showed that: (1) the restorative and present VR scenarios were beneficial in alleviating state anxiety and depression; (2) the restorative environment and presence were significantly and positively related to the reduction of anxiety and depression respectively, moreover, presence mediated the restorative environment on the recovery from anxiety and depression; (3) the environmental settings, the complexity of interaction, human factors, and maturity of VR devices and technology were also key factors that influenced the effects of interactive VR scenario experience and intervention. These studies revealed VR psychological intervention scenarios could be designed with comprehensive factors. Moreover, they might help pave the way for future study in exploring the physiology and psychology mode in virtual and real spaces, enhancing intervention effectiveness.

Abstract
Importance Prior research has shown a statistically significant association between sustaining a concussion and suicidality in adolescents, but this prior research controlled for relatively few variables predictive of suicidality. Objective To examine whether sustaining a concussion remained a significant predictor of suicidality after controlling for relevant covariates (e.g., sexual abuse/assault, bullying, substance use, depression), hypothesizing that the relationship between concussion and suicidality would become non-significant after controlling for these variables. Design This study involved secondary data analysis of the 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance (YRBS) System, a national cross-sectional study of adolescents. Analyses were stratified by gender. Setting A national sampling of U.S. high school students. Participants Eleven thousand two hundred sixty-two students in the YRBS database, including 5,483 boys and 5,779 girls. Exposure(s) Participants included in the analyses reported whether, in the last year, they experienced a concussion and/or suicidality. Main Outcomes and Measures The main outcome was suicidality (i.e., ideation, planning, attempt), which was predicted by concussion in an unadjusted analysis and by concussion along with other risk factors in a multivariable analysis. Results The final sample included 11,262 participants with available data on concussion and suicidality in the last year (14–18 years-old; 51.3% girls; 49.0% White). Per unadjusted odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals, there was a relationship between concussion and suicidal ideation [girls: OR = 1.46 (1.24, 1.73); boys: OR = 1.69 (1.41, 2.03)], planning (girls: OR = 1.39 [1.16, 1.66]; boys: OR = 1.76 [1.44, 2.14]), and attempt [girls: OR = 1.70 (1.32, 2.19); boys: OR = 3.13, (2.37, 4.15)]. These relationships became mostly non-significant after controlling for relevant risk factors for suicidality. The adjusted odds ratios showed no relationship between concussion and suicidal ideation [girls: OR = 1.11 (0.86, 1.44); boys: OR = 1.24 (0.92, 1.69)] or planning (girls: OR = 1.07 [0.82, 1.40]; boys: OR = 1.12 [0.82, 1.55]); but a significant relationship with suicide attempts in boys [OR = 1.98 (1.28, 3.04)], but not girls [OR = 1.05 (0.74, 1.49)]. Conclusions and Relevance There was an association between concussion and suicidality in U.S. high school students; however, after controlling for other variables (e.g., depression, sexual abuse/assault, illicit drug use), there was no association between concussion and suicidality aside from a significant relationship between concussion and attempts in boys.
