Pathways of terminal respiration in marine invertebrates. I. The respiratory system in cephalopods

Comparative bioaccumulation of trace elements between Nautilus pompilius and Nautilus macromphalus (Cephalopoda: Nautiloidea) from Vanuatu and New Caledonia

The concentrations of 16 trace elements were investigated and compared for the first time in the digestive and excreting tissues of two Nautilus species (Cephalopoda: Nautiloidea) from two geologically contrasted areas: (1) N. macromphalus from New Caledonia, a region characterized by its richness in nickel ores and its lack of tectonic activities and (2) N. pompilius from the Vanuatu archipelago showing high volcanic and tectonic activities. In both Nautilus species, results clearly highlighted that the digestive gland played a key role in the bioaccumulation and storage of Ag, Cd, Ce, Co, Cu, Fe, La, Nd, V, and Zn whereas As, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Se were accumulated in a greater extent in the excreting tissues (i.e. pericardial and renal appendages). Despite contrasting environments, no significant difference (p<0.05) was found between the two Nautilus species in the concentrations of most of the essential and non-essential elements, including Ni and associated metals in Ni ores (i.e. Co and Mn). As nautilus lives on the outer shelf of barrier reefs, these results strongly support the hypothesis that the New Caledonian lagoon traps the major amount of the trace elements derived from natural erosion and the intense mining activities conducted on land. In contrast, the concentrations of the rare earth elements (Ce, La, and Nd) were significantly higher in N. pompilius than in N. macromphalus, probably as a result of the local enrichment of Vanuatu waters by specific environmental processes, such as volcanism or upwelling.

Pathways of terminal respiration in marine invertebrates. II. The cytochrome system of Aplysia

The classic spectrophotometric method for identification and characterization of respiratory enzymes has been used for the study of the cytochrome system of Aplysia. Particles have been prepared from the buccal mass and the gizzard muscles. Difference spectra taken on isolated particle suspensions show the presence of a complete cytochrome system composed of five components: cytochrome a, b, c, c(1), and a(3). As indicated by the peaks of the sharp absorption bands of their reduced forms, they are very similar to the cytochromes of mammals and yeast. Cytochrome a(3) has been identified as the terminal oxidase of Aplysia muscle by means of the spectrophotometric study of its carbon monoxide compound. Further evidence for the presence of a cytochrome system in Aplysia was obtained by assays of the catalytic activities of the isolated particles: succinic dehydrogenase, cytochrome oxidase, DPNH cytochrome c reductase. The cytochrome oxidase activity was strongly inhibited by carbon monoxide in the dark; the inhibition was totally relieved by light. Cytochrome c has been extracted and purified from muscle tissue. Its spectrum is almost identical with that of the mammalian pigment both in the oxidized and reduced forms. From the hepatopancreas a new respiratory enzyme has been extracted which has many physical and chemical properties in common with cytochrome h from terrestrial snails.

Cephalopods as a vector for the transfer of cadmium to top marine predators in the north-east Atlantic Ocean

Three hundred and fifty individuals of 12 species of cephalopods which differed in their feeding habitats were sampled from the French Atlantic coast to the sub-Arctic region (Bay of Biscay, English Channel, west Irish coast and Faroe Islands) and analysed for their cadmium contents. Comparison of the Cd levels of the cephalopods showed that those from the sub-Arctic area contained very high Cd concentrations compared to those from lower latitudes such as along the French Atlantic coast. High Cd levels in cephalopods from the sub-Arctic zone correspond closely to the reported high Cd concentrations in the tissues of top vertebrate predators from the same area. Comparison of the weekly Cd intakes for the Faroe Island pilot whales with the 'Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake' for humans recommended by the World Health Organisation, showed that top vertebrate predators are often subjected to Cd doses far in excess of those recommended for humans. Our limited survey results suggest that cephalopods constitute an important source of Cd for cephalopod predators, and that this bioaccumulation effect is most evident at high latitudes.
