Ethical guidelines for publishing in the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle: Update 2023

The Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle (JCSM) aims to publish articles with relevance to wasting disorders and illnesses of the muscle in the broadest sense. In order to avoid publication of inappropriate articles and to avoid protracted disputes, the Editors have established ethical guidelines that detail a number of regulations to be fulfilled prior to submission to the journal. This article updates the principles of ethical authorship and publishing in JCSM and its daughter journal JCSM Rapid Communication. We require the corresponding author, on behalf of all co-authors, to certify adherence to the following principles: All authors listed on a manuscript considered for publication have approved its submission and (if accepted) approve publication in the journal; Each named author has made a material and independent contribution to the work submitted for publication. No person who has a right to be recognized as author has been omitted from the list of authors on the submitted manuscript; The submitted work is original and is neither under consideration elsewhere nor that it has been published previously in whole or in part other than in abstract form; All authors certify that the submitted work is original and does not contain excessive overlap with prior or contemporaneous publication elsewhere, and where the publication reports on cohorts, trials, or data that have been reported on before the facts need to be acknowledged and these other publications must be referenced; All original research work has been approved by the relevant bodies such as institutional review boards or ethics committees; All relevant conflicts of interest, financial or otherwise, that may affect the authors' ability to present data objectively, and relevant sources of funding of the research in question have been duly declared in the manuscript; All authors certify that they will submit the original source data to the editorial office upon request; Authors who have used artificial intelligence, language models, machine learning, or similar technologies need to provide a written statement - as part of the manuscript - that details the use of the respective technology; none of the aforementioned technologies can be listed as an author; The manuscript in its published form will be maintained on the servers of the journal as a valid publication only as long as all statements in these guidelines remain true. If any of the aforementioned statements ceases to be true, the authors have a duty to notify as soon as possible the Editor-in-Chief of the journal, so that the available information regarding the published article can be updated and/or the manuscript can be withdrawn.

Nutrition and sarcopenia: Current knowledge domain and emerging trends

Objective

Non-pharmacological management like nutrient supplements has shown positive impacts on muscle mass and strength, which has burgeoned clinical and research interest internationally. The aim of this study was to analyze the current knowledge domain and emerging trends of nutrition-related research in sarcopenia and provide implications for future research and strategies to prevent or manage sarcopenia in the context of aging societies.

Materials and methods

Nutrition- and sarcopenia-related research were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database from its inception to April 1, 2022. Performance analysis, science mapping, and thematic clustering were performed by using the software VOSviewer and R package “bibliometrix.” Bibliometric analysis (BA) guideline was applied in this study.

Results

A total of 8,110 publications were extracted and only 7,510 (92.60%) were selected for final analysis. The production trend in nutrition and sarcopenia research was promising, and 1,357 journals, 107 countries, 6,668 institutions, and 31,289 authors were identified in this field till 2021. Stable cooperation networks have formed in the field, but they are mostly divided by region and research topics. Health and sarcopenia, metabolism and nutrition, nutrition and exercise, body compositions, and physical performance were the main search themes.

Conclusions

This study provides health providers and scholars mapped out a comprehensive basic knowledge structure in the research in the field of nutrition and sarcopenia over the past 30 years. This study could help them quickly grasp research hotspots and choose future research projects.

The influence of diet therapeutic intervention on the sarcopenic index of patients with metabolic syndrome

Introduction

The published data showed the importance of metabolic control in preventing complications in metabolic syndrome (MS) and the role of nutritional medical therapy in glycemic control and in the control of dyslipidemia, hypertension, weight loss/normalization (in overweight or malnourished subjects).

Objectives

This study follows the evolution of sarcopenic index (SI) and other clinical parameters (body mass index (BMI), homeostasis evaluation index (HOMA index)) correlated with MS after diet therapy or diet therapy combined with sports, in patients with MS.

Patients and methods

Our research was conducted during 12 months, on 110 patients >18 years of age, with HOMA index>2, divided into three groups: control group (CG, N=20), diet therapy group (DTG, N=58), diet therapy and sports group (DTSG, N=32). HOMA index for insulin resistance was calculated as the product of resting plasma insulin (in microunits/milliliter) and plasma glucose (in millimoles/liter), divided by 22.5. SI was determined using BIA, as being the ratio between muscle mass and fat mass, measured in cm²/m².

Results

A significant decrease of BMI (p<0.05) in DTG (from 31.63 to 24.50) and DTSG (from 30.18 to 24.17) vs. CG was observed (Pearson coefficient r=0.281, p<0.001). Weight status changed significantly (p<0.05) in the high-risk patients. There was a significant decrease of HOMA index (p<0.05) in DTG (from 5.93 to 2.57), DTSG (from 3.93 to 2.23), and in CG an increase was observed (from 3.15 to 3.37).

Conclusion

The best results in the prevention/ treatment of sarcopenia in MS patients were obtained for DTSG, which benefited from both the positive effect of diet and physical activity.

Metabolic disorders in heart failure and cancer

In an aging population, the number of patients affected by heart failure and cancer is constantly increasing and together these two conditions account for more than 50% of all deaths worldwide. Both diseases share similar risk factors including smoking, obesity, and hypertension. Presenting symptoms may also be similar, with patients frequently complaining of dyspnea, fatigue, and anorexia. Many affected patients, especially those with more advanced heart failure or cancer, suffer also from metabolic disorders. These can lead eventually to muscle wasting, sarcopenia, and cachexia. These complications are associated with increased morbidity, a poorer quality of life, a worse prognosis and indeed they represent an independent risk factor for the advancement of the underlying disease itself. Very few therapeutic options have been established to treat these co-morbidities. For sarcopenia the only validated treatment is resistance training. Moreover, there is currently no guideline recommended therapy for the treatment of cachexia. New treatment strategies are urgently needed to prevent and treat muscle and wasting disorders in patients with chronic diseases such as cancer and chronic heart failure.
