Turning manoeuvres in free-flying locusts: two-channel radio-telemetric transmission of muscle activity

Insect-machine hybrid robot

Recently, insect-machine hybrid robots have been developed that incorporate insects into robots or incorporate machines into insects. Most previous studies were motivated to use the function of insects for robots, but this technology can also prove to be useful as an experimental tool for neuroethology. We reviewed hybrid robots in terms of the closed-loop between an insect, a robot, and the real environment. The incorporated biological components provided the robot sensory signals that were received by the insects and the adaptive functions of the brain. The incorporated artificial components permitted us to understand the biological system by controlling insect behavior. Hybrid robots thus extend the roles of mobile robot experiments in neuroethology for both model evaluation and brain function analysis.

Controlled banked turns in coleopteran flight measured by a miniature wireless inertial measurement unit

The mechanisms and principles of insect flight have long been investigated by researchers working on micro and nano air vehicles (MAVs/NAVs). However, studies of insect flight maneuvers require high speed filming and high spatial resolution in a small experimental space, or the tethering of the insect to a fixed place. Under such artificial conditions, the insects may deviate its flying behavior from that of regular flight. In this study, we mounted a tiny wireless system, or 'backpack', on live beetles (Mecynorrhina torquata; length 62 ± 8 mm; mass 7.4 ± 1.3 g) freely flying in a large laboratory space. The backpack contains a micro inertial measurement unit (IMU) that was especially designed and manufactured for this purpose. Owing to the small mass (∼1.30 g) and dimensions (∼2.3 cm²) of the backpack and the high accuracy of the IMU, we could remotely record the beetle in free flight. The free flight data revealed a strong linear correlation between the roll angle and yaw angular velocity. The strength of the correlation was quantified by the correlation coefficients and mean values. The change in roll angle preceded the change in yaw angular velocity. Moreover, there were frequent fluctuations in the roll angular velocity, which were uncorrelated with the yaw angular velocity. Apart from the strong correlation, these findings imply that Mecynorrhina torquata actively manipulates its roll rotation without coupling to the yaw rotation.

High order neural correlates of social behavior in the honeybee brain

BACKGROUND

Honeybees are well established models of neural correlates of sensory function, learning and memory formation. Here we report a novel approach allowing to record high-order mushroom body-extrinsic interneurons in the brain of worker bees within a functional colony. New method The use of two 100 cm long twisted copper electrodes allowed recording of up to four units of mushroom body-extrinsic neurons simultaneously for up to 24h in animals moving freely between members of the colony. Every worker, including the recorded bee, hatched in the experimental environment. The group consisted of 200 animals in average.

RESULTS

Animals explored different regions of the comb and interacted with other colony members. The activities of the units were not selective for locations on the comb, body directions with respect to gravity and olfactory signals on the comb, or different social interactions. However, combinations of these parameters defined neural activity in a unit-specific way. In addition, units recorded from the same animal co-varied according to unknown factors. Comparison with existing method(s): All electrophysiological studies with honey bees were performed so far on constrained animals outside their natural behavioral contexts. Yet no neuronal correlates were measured in a social context. Free mobility of recoded insects over a range of a quarter square meter allows addressing questions concerning neural correlates of social communication, planning of tasks within the colony and attention-like processes.

CONCLUSIONS

The method makes it possible to study neural correlates of social behavior in a near-natural setting within the honeybee colony.

Recent developments in the remote radio control of insect flight

The continuing miniaturization of digital circuits and the development of low power radio systems coupled with continuing studies into the neurophysiology and dynamics of insect flight are enabling a new class of implantable interfaces capable of controlling insects in free flight for extended periods. We provide context for these developments, review the state-of-the-art and discuss future directions in this field.

Active control of free flight manoeuvres in a hawkmoth, Agrius convolvuli

By combining optical triangulation with the comb-fringe technique and dual-channel telemetry, wing kinematics and body attitudes accompanying muscle activities of free-flying male hawkmoths were recorded synchronously when they performed flight manoeuvres elicited by a female sex pheromone. The results indicate that the wing leading edge angular position at the ventral stroke reversal, which can be decomposed by two orthogonal angular parameters (a flapping angle and a deviation angle), is well controllable. Two specific flight muscles, the dorsal-ventral muscle (DVM, indirect muscle, a wing elevator) and the third axillary muscle (3AXM, direct muscle, a wing retractor), can modulate the flapping angle and the deviation angle, respectively, by means of regulating the firing timing of muscle activities. The firing timing can be expressed by the firing latency absolutely, which is just before the timing of ventral stroke reversal. The results illustrate that lengthening the firing latency of the DVM and of the 3AXM can increase the flapping angle and the deviation angle, respectively, which both strengthen the downstroke at the ventral stroke reversal. The relationship of bilateral asymmetry shows that the bilateral differences in the firing latency of the DVM and of the 3AXM will cause bilateral differences in the wing position, which accompany the variations of yaw and roll angles in time course. This implies the contribution of the two muscles to active steering controls during turning or banking, though the DVM being an indirect muscle was generally treated as a power generator. Finally, the relationship between the pitch angle and the 3AXM latency, deduced from the relationships between the pitch angle and the deviation angle and between the deviation angle and the 3AXM latency, shows that lengthening the 3AXM latency can increase the pitch angle at the ventral stroke reversal by moving the wing tip far away from the centre of gravity of the body, which indicates a functional role of the 3AXM in active pitching control.

Nonlinear time-periodic models of the longitudinal flight dynamics of desert locusts Schistocerca gregaria

Previous studies of insect flight control have been statistical in approach, simply correlating wing kinematics with body kinematics or force production. Kinematics and forces are linked by Newtonian mechanics, so adopting a dynamics-based approach is necessary if we are to place the study of insect flight on its proper physical footing. Here we develop semi-empirical models of the longitudinal flight dynamics of desert locusts Schistocerca gregaria. We use instantaneous force-moment measurements from individual locusts to parametrize the nonlinear rigid body equations of motion. Since the instantaneous forces are approximately periodic, we represent them using Fourier series, which are embedded in the equations of motion to give a nonlinear time-periodic (NLTP) model. This is a proper mathematical generalization of an earlier linear-time invariant (LTI) model of locust flight dynamics, developed using previously published time-averaged versions of the instantaneous force recordings. We perform various numerical simulations, within the fitted range of the model, and across the range of body angles used by free-flying locusts, to explore the likely behaviour of the locusts upon release from the tether. Solutions of the NLTP models are compared with solutions of the nonlinear time-invariant (NLTI) models to which they reduce when the periodic terms are dropped. Both sets of models are unstable and therefore fail to explain locust flight stability fully. Nevertheless, whereas the measured forces include statistically significant harmonic content up to about the eighth harmonic, the simulated flight trajectories display no harmonic content above the fundamental forcing frequency. Hence, manoeuvre control in locusts will not directly reflect subtle changes in the higher harmonics of the wing beat, but must operate on a coarser time-scale. A state-space analysis of the NLTP models reveals orbital trajectories that are impossible to capture in the LTI and NLTI models, and inspires the hypothesis that asymptotic orbital stability is the proper definition of stability in flapping flight. Manoeuvre control on the scale of more than one wing beat would then consist in exciting transients from one asymptotically stable orbit to another. We summarize these hypotheses by proposing a limit-cycle analogy for flapping flight control and suggest experiments for verification of the limit-cycle control analogy hypothesis.

Neuromuscular control of aerodynamic forces and moments in the blowfly,Calliphora vicina

Flies are among the most agile of flying insects, a capacity that ultimately results from their nervous system's control over steering muscles and aerodynamic forces during flight. In order to investigate the relationships among neuromuscular control, musculo-skeletal mechanics and flight forces, we captured high-speed, three-dimensional wing kinematics of the blowfly, Calliphora vicina, while simultaneously recording electromyogram signals from prominent steering muscles during visually induced turns. We used the quantified kinematics to calculate the translational and rotational components of aerodynamic forces and moments using a theoretical quasi-steady model of force generation, confirmed using a dynamically scaled mechanical model of a Calliphora wing. We identified three independently controlled features of the wingbeat trajectory –downstroke deviation, dorsal amplitude and mode. Modulation of each of these kinematic features corresponded to both activity in a distinct steering muscle group and a distinct manipulation of the aerodynamic force vector. This functional specificity resulted from the independent control of downstroke and upstroke forces rather than the independent control of separate aerodynamic mechanisms. The predicted contributions of each kinematic feature to body lift, thrust, roll, yaw and pitch are discussed.

Turning manoeuvres in free-flying locusts: high-speed video-monitoring

High-speed video-monitoring (500 f/s) was employed to analyse the flight path of free-flying locusts. A 3-D reconstruction enabled the simultaneous documentation of the motion of the body and all four wings. Particular attention was paid to turning manoeuvres. It is shown that angular changes during yawing and rolling are closely related; both are coupled, enabling natural banking of a free-flying animal. Rolling depends on bilateral inequalities in stroking of both wing pairs, whereby the differences are more conspicuous for the forewings. A relatively shorter downstroke occurs for the "inner" side of a turn. The determination of the phase ratio allows a reliable description of the instantaneous rolling manoeuvre. There is no change in cycle duration correlated with turning. The downstroke shortening results from a slight delay of downstroke initiation and an advance of the upstroke reversal. In parallel, the stroke amplitude is reduced on the "inner" side. The effects of bilateral asymmetries are immediate; they influence the instantaneous wing-beat cycle, but not the subsequent cycle. These correlations are consistent, though variable, in their magnitude, as is to be expected for a complex system in which several parameters have to be combined for the behaviourally relevant output.
