A rare case report of diverticulum of the buccal mucosa

We report a case of diverticulum of the buccal mucosa. A 56-year-old man had a small pouch-shaped lesion behind the parotid papilla that caused pain and food impaction. After resection, the lesion was histopathologically diagnosed as diverticulum without buccal muscle tear. There has been no recurrence during 1 year postoperatively.

Diverticulum in buccal mucosa: A rare sac-like oral pouch

OBJECTIVE

This article describes a rare case of oral diverticulum.

BACKGROUND

Diverticulum represents a sac-like protrusion of the gastrointestinal tract, commonly arising in the colon wall of elder individuals. Zenker's diverticulum can also occur in the pharyngeal mucosa. However, oral diverticulum appears rare.

MATERIAL AND METHOD

The patient was an 88-year-old man with dementia living in a geriatric facility. A dental hygienist incidentally identified a small pouch containing stagnant food residue in the left buccal mucosa during oral hygiene procedures.

RESULTS

The small pouch with stagnant food residue was identified as a diverticulum.

CONCLUSION

Diverticula may be identified from the stagnation of food residue. Dental specialists who practice oral hygiene should be aware of diverticula as a differential diagnosis.

Diverticular Pouch of the Buccal Mucosa: A Rare Case Report

Diverticular pouch in the oral cavity is a rare disease, and its etiology is unclear. The authors present a rare case of diverticular pouch in the buccal mucosa. A 79-year-old man visited our hospital with a chief complaint of food impaction in the right buccal mucosa. Intraoral examination revealed a pouch just inferior to the parotid papilla. Histopathological examination after excisional biopsy showed that the epithelial cells lining the pouch were continuous with the mucous membrane and a diagnosis was made of diverticular pouch of the buccal mucosa. Twenty-five months after the patient's initial visit no recurrence has been noted. Further clinico-pathological studies are required to understand diverticular disease in the buccal mucosa. This case might help dentists to become more aware of these lesions and collect data for further investigations.

Oral diverticulum: a case report with histopathological findings

Oral diverticulum is rarely encountered, and the histopathological findings are unclear. We herein report a case of an oral diverticulum and describe its histopathological findings. A buccal mucosal outpouching was observed in a 66-year-old man. Food debris was seen within the outpouching. Under the clinical diagnosis of a diverticulum-like lesion, excision of the outpouching was performed through an intraoral incision to stop food impaction. Histopathological examination revealed that the excised lesion was a true diverticular structure composed of a keratinising, squamous epithelial lining with a surrounding fibrous connective tissue wall, with inflammatory cell infiltration and haemorrhage. The histopathological diagnosis was a diverticular pouch of the buccal region. Clinicians should be aware of this lesion to ensure correct diagnosis and treatment.
