Abstract
Bis-alkylthio maleimido derivatives have been prepared from teicoplanin pseudoaglycon by reaction of its primary amino group with N-ethoxycarbonyl bis-alkylthiomaleimides. Some of the new derivatives displayed excellent antibacterial activity against resistant bacteria.

Abstract
A series of azaphthalocyanines (AzaPc) bearing one, two, four or eight isopropylidene-protected galactosyl units was prepared by azide-alkyne click reaction or by classical Pc template cyclotetramerization of the corresponding dicyanopyrazine and AzaPc properties important for photodynamic therapy were compared. All compounds absorbed at long wavelengths (above 650 nm) and belonged to strong singlet oxygen producers (Φ(Δ) = 0.58-0.64) retaining significant fluorescence emission (Φ(F) = 0.026-0.23). The only exception was the compound with four isopropyliden-protected galactosyl units where partial aggregation was observed. Removal of protecting groups increased the polar character of all AzaPc. However, only AzaPc bearing eight galactoses was found to be water-soluble (105 mg mL(-1)) but noticeably aggregated in water as well as in organic solvents (DMF, DMSO). Amphiphilic AzaPc bearing one deprotected galactose was incorporated into the lipidic bilayer of liposomes in a nonaggregated form. Liposomes may therefore be a suitable delivery system for this amphiphilic photosensitizer.

Abstract
Michael addition of 1,2:3,4-di-O-isopropylidene-6-thio-alpha-D-galactose (2) to 2-propyl 6-O-acetyl-3,4-dideoxy-alpha-D-glycero-hex-3-enopyranosid-2-ulose (1) afforded, as the major diastereoisomer, 2-propyl 6-O-acetyl-3-deoxy-4-S-(6-deoxy-1,2:3,4-di-O-isopropylidene-alpha-D-galactopyranos-6-yl)-4-thio-alpha-D-threo-hexopyranosid-2-ulose (3, 91% yield). Reduction of the carbonyl group of 3, followed by O-deacetylation gave the two epimers 7 (alpha-D-lyxo) and 8 (alpha-D-xylo) in a 1:2 ratio. On removal of the protecting groups of 8 by acid hydrolysis, formation of an 1,6-anhydro bridge was observed in the 3-deoxy-4-thiohexopyranose unit (10). The free non-glycosidic thioether-linked disaccharide 3-deoxy-4-S-(6-deoxy-alpha,beta-D-galactopyranos-6-yl)-4-thio-alpha,beta-D-xylo-hexopyranose (11) was obtained by acetolysis of 10 followed by O-deacetylation. A similar sequence starting from the enone 1 and methyl 2,3,4-tri-O-benzoyl-6-thio-alpha-D-glucopyranoside (12) led successfully to 2-propyl 3-deoxy-4-S-(methyl 6-deoxy-alpha-D-glucopyranos-6-yl)-4-thio-alpha-D-lyxo-hexopyranoside (17) and its alpha-D-xylo analog (19, major product). In this synthetic route, orthogonal sets of protecting groups were employed to preserve the configuration of both reducing ends and to avoid the formation of the 1,6-anhydro ring.

Abstract
C-6 opening of 5,6-cyclic sulfate derivatives of mannofuranose with a thiolate anion followed by acidic hydrolysis of the acyclic sulfate gave 6-S-alkyl derivatives in good yields (70-95%) and short reaction times (10-15min). This methodology was applied to the synthesis of methyl 2,3-O-isopropylidene-6-S-(2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-beta-d-glucopyranosyl)-6-thio-alpha-d-mannofuranoside (70%), 2,3-O-isopropylidene-6-S-(2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-beta-d-glucopyranosyl)-6-thio-alpha-d-mannofuranose (87%) and 2,3-O-isopropylidene-6-S-(1,2:3,4-di-O-isopropylidene-alpha-d-galactopyranos-6-yl)-6-thio-alpha-d-mannofuranose (87%).

Abstract
6,7-Diaryl derivatives of mono and di-S-glycopyranosylthiolumazine derivatives 5-8 were prepared to test their nematocide activity. In vitro tests against Caenorhabditis elegans were performed and it was found that monosubstituted derivatives 5-7 showed higher activity than the corresponding unsubstituted 2-thiolumazines 1-3, whilst 2-S,4-S-di-glycopyranosylpteridine derivative 8 was inactive in contrast to unsubstituted derivative 4. In order to check whether the lack of activity of 8 was due to the two bulky substituents of the pteridine nucleus, 2-S,4-S-dimethyl derivative 9 was synthesized and assayed showing also lack of activity. A theoretical study on the stability of the different possible tautomers of compound 4 was carried out in an attempt to explain some, in appearance, anomalous (13)C NMR data of this compound.
