Cancellation of streak artifacts in radial abdominal imaging using interference null space projection

PURPOSE

In radial abdominal imaging, it has been commonly observed that signal from the arms cause streaks due to system imperfections. We previously introduced a streak removal technique (B-STAR), which is inherently spatially variant and limited to work in image space. In this work, we propose a spatially invariant streak cancellation technique (CACTUS), which can be applied in either image space or k-space and is compatible with iterative reconstructions.

THEORY AND METHODS

Streak sources are typically spatially localized and can be represented using a low-dimensional subspace. CACTUS identifies the streak subspace by leveraging the spatial redundancy of receiver coils and projects the data onto the streak null space to eliminate the streaks. When applied in k-space, CACTUS can be combined with iterative reconstructions. CACTUS was tested in phantoms and in vivo abdominal imaging using a radial turbo spin-echo pulse sequence.

RESULTS

In phantoms, CACTUS improved T2 estimation in comparison to previous de-streaking methods. In vivo experiments showed that CACTUS reduced streaks and yielded T2 estimation, in regions affected by streaks, closer to a streak-free reference. Evaluation using a clinical abdominal dataset (n = 20) showed that CACTUS is comparable to B-STAR and yields significantly better signal preservation and streak cancellation than coil removal and suppression methods.

CONCLUSION

CACTUS provides superior signal preservation and streak reduction performance compared to coil removal and suppression methods. As a clear advantage over B-STAR, CACTUS can be integrated with iterative reconstruction methods. In abdominal T2 mapping, CACTUS improves the accuracy of parameter estimation in areas affected by streaks.

Multiresolution radial MRI to reduce IDLE time in pre-beam imaging on an MR-Linac (MR-RIDDLE)

Online adaptive MR-guided radiation therapy improves treatment quality at the expense of considerable longer treatment time. The treatment lengthening partially originates from the preparatory (pre-beam) MR imaging required to encode all the information needed for contour propagation, contour adaptation and replanning. MRI requires several minutes of scan time before the encoded information is converted to usable images, which results in long idle times before the first clinical tasks are performed. In this study we propose a novel imaging sequence, called MR-RIDDLE, that reduces the idle time and therefore speeds-up the workflow in online MR-guided radiation therapy. MR-RIDDLE enables multiresolution image reconstruction to commence during data acquisition where low resolution images are available within one minute, after which the data collection continuous for subsequent high-resolution image updates. We demonstrate that the low resolution images can be used to accurately propagate contours from the pre-treatment scan. For abdominothoracic tumours MR-RIDDLE inherently captures a motion-blurred representation of the mid-position, which we were able to deblur using a combination of an internal motion surrogate and auto-adaptive soft-gating filters. Our results demonstrate that MR-RIDDLE provides a robust, flexible and time-efficient strategy for pre-beam imaging, even for cases with large respiratory movements or baseline shifts within the acquisition. We anticipate that this novel concept of parallelising the MR imaging and the clinical tasks has the potential to considerably speed-up and streamline the online MR-guided radiation therapy workflow.

Undersampling patterns in k-space for compressed sensing MRI using two-dimensional Cartesian sampling

In compressed sensing magnetic resonance imaging (CS-MRI), undersampling of k-space is performed to achieve faster imaging. For this process, it is important to acquire data randomly, and an optimal random undersampling pattern is required. However, random undersampling is difficult in two-dimensional (2D) Cartesian sampling. In this study, the effect of random undersampling patterns on image reconstruction was clarified using phantom and in vivo MRI, and a sampling pattern relevant for 2D Cartesian sampling in CS-MRI is suggested. The precision of image restoration was estimated with various acceleration factors and extents for the fully sampled central region of k-space. The root-mean-square error, structural similarity index, and modulation transfer function were measured, and visual assessments were also performed. The undersampling pattern was shown to influence the precision of image restoration, and an optimal undersampling pattern should be used to improve image quality; therefore, we suggest that the ideal undersampling pattern in CS-MRI for 2D Cartesian sampling is one with a high extent for the fully sampled central region of k-space.

Modified dixon-based renal dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI facilitates automated registration and perfusion analysis

Purpose

Renal dynamic contrast‐enhanced (DCE) MRI provides information on renal perfusion and filtration. However, clinical implementation is hampered by challenges in postprocessing as a result of misalignment of the kidneys due to respiration. We propose to perform automated image registration using the fat‐only images derived from a modified Dixon reconstruction of a dual‐echo acquisition because these provide consistent contrast over the dynamic series.

Methods

DCE data of 10 hypertensive patients was used. Dual‐echo images were acquired at 1.5 T with temporal resolution of 3.9 s during contrast agent injection. Dixon fat, water, and in‐phase and opposed‐phase (OP) images were reconstructed. Postprocessing was automated. Registration was performed both to fat images and OP images for comparison. Perfusion and filtration values were extracted from a two‐compartment model fit.

Results

Automatic registration to fat images performed better than automatic registration to OP images with visible contrast enhancement. Median vertical misalignment of the kidneys was 14 mm prior to registration, compared to 3 mm and 5 mm with registration to fat images and OP images, respectively (P = 0.03). Mean perfusion values and MR‐based glomerular filtration rates (GFR) were 233 ± 64 mL/100 mL/min and 60 ± 36 mL/minute, respectively, based on fat‐registered images. MR‐based GFR correlated with creatinine‐based GFR (P = 0.04) for fat‐registered images. For unregistered and OP‐registered images, this correlation was not significant.

Conclusion

Absence of contrast changes on Dixon fat images improves registration in renal DCE MRI and enables automated postprocessing, resulting in a more accurate estimation of GFR. Automatic renal segmentation for MR urography using 3D-GrabCut and random forests

PURPOSE

To introduce and evaluate a fully automated renal segmentation technique for glomerular filtration rate (GFR) assessment in children.

METHODS

An image segmentation method based on iterative graph cuts (GrabCut) was modified to work on time-resolved 3D dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI data sets. A random forest classifier was trained to further segment the renal tissue into cortex, medulla, and the collecting system. The algorithm was tested on 26 subjects and the segmentation results were compared to the manually drawn segmentation maps using the F1-score metric. A two-compartment model was used to estimate the GFR of each subject using both automatically and manually generated segmentation maps.

RESULTS

Segmentation maps generated automatically showed high similarity to the manually drawn maps for the whole-kidney (F1 = 0.93) and renal cortex (F1 = 0.86). GFR estimations using whole-kidney segmentation maps from the automatic method were highly correlated (Spearman's ρ = 0.99) to the GFR values obtained from manual maps. The mean GFR estimation error of the automatic method was 2.98 ± 0.66% with an average segmentation time of 45 s per patient.

CONCLUSION

The automatic segmentation method performs as well as the manual segmentation for GFR estimation and reduces the segmentation time from several hours to 45 s. Magn Reson Med 79:1696-1707, 2018. © 2017 International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.
