Abstract
Abstract
Single drop microextraction (SDME) nowadays earns an increasing attention by scientists due to its simplicity, low cost and the need for only common laboratory equipment. This microextraction technique combines sample cleanup and pre-concentration of analytes in one step. Furthermore, a significant reduction in the amount of organic solvents needed comparing to standard LLE techniques places SDME into the position of environmental friendly extraction techniques. SDME is a straightforward technique in which a micro-drop of solvent is suspended from the tip of a conventional micro-syringe and then it is in a direct contact with a sample solution in which it is immiscible or it could be suspended in the headspace above the sample. The paper overviews developments of the state-of-the-art SDME techniques for the extraction of harmful organic compound and pollutants from environmental, food and biological matrices. Key extraction parameters essential for SDME performance were described and discussed.

Abstract
A novel core-shell composite (SiO(2)-nLPD), consisting of micrometer-sized silica spheres as a core and nanometer titania particles as a surface coating, was prepared by liquid phase deposition (LPD). Here, we show the resulting core-shell composite to have better efficient and selective enrichment for mono- and multi-phosphopeptides than commercially available TiO(2) spheres without any enhancer. The material exhibited favorable characteristics for HPLC, which include narrow pore size distribution, high surface area and pore volume. We also show that the core-shell composite can efficiently separate adenosine phosphate compounds due to the Lewis acid-base interaction between titania and phosphate group when used as HPLC packings. After coating the silica sphere with titania by LPD, the silanol of silica spheres will be shielded and that the stationary phase, C(18) bonded SiO(2)-3LPD, could be used under extreme pH condition.

Abstract
A new sol-gel protocol was designed and optimized to produce titanium-dioxide-based columns within confined geometries such as monolithic capillary columns and porous-layer open-tubular columns. A surface pre-treatment of the capillary enabled an efficient anchorage of the monolith to the silica capillary wall during the synthesis. The monolith was further synthesized from a solution containing titanium n-propoxide, hydrochloric acid, N-methylformamide, water, and poly(ethylene oxide) as pore template. The chromatographic application of capillary titania-based columns was demonstrated with the separation of a set of phosphorylated nucleotides as probe molecules using aqueous normal-phase liquid chromatography conditions. Capillary titania monoliths offered a compromise between the high permeability and the important loading capacity needed to potentially achieve miniaturized sample preparations. The specificity of the miniaturized titania monolithic support is illustrated with the specific enrichment of 5'-adenosine mono-phosphate. The monolithic column offered a ten times higher loading capacity of 5'-adenosine mono-phosphate compared with that of the capillary titania porous-layer open-tubular geometry.

Dual-column capillary microextraction (CME) combined with electrothermal vaporization inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ETV-ICP-MS) for the speciation of arsenic in human hair extracts. Abstract
In this work, dual-column capillary microextraction (CME) system consisting of N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (AAPTS)-silica coated capillary (C1) and 3-mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane (MPTS)-silica coated capillary (C2) was developed for sequential separation/preconcentration of arsenite [As(III)], arsenate [As(V)], monomethylarsonic acid [MMA(V)] and dimethylarsinic acid [DMA(V)] in the extracts of human hair followed by electrothermal vaporization inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ETV-ICP-MS) detection with iridium as permanent modifier. Various experimental parameters affecting the dual-column microextraction of different As species had been investigated in detail. It was found that at pH 9, As(V) and MMA could be quantitatively retained by C1 and only As(III) could be quantitatively retained by C2. With the aid of valve switching, As(V)/MMA(V) retained on C1 and As(III) retained on C2 could be sequentially desorbed by 10 microl of 0.01 mol l(-1) HNO(3) [for As(V)], 0.1 mol l(-1) HNO(3) [for MMA(V)] and 0.2 mol l(-1) HNO(3)-3% thiourea (m/v) [for As(III)], respectively, the eluents were immediately introduced into the Ir-coated graphite tubes for further ETV-ICP-MS detection. With two-step ETV pyrolysis program, Cl(-) in the sample matrix could be in situ removed, and the total As in the human hair extracts or digested solution could be interference-free, determined by ETV-ICP-MS. DMA(V) in the human hair extracts was obtained by subtraction of total As in the human hair extracts from other three As species. Under the optimized conditions, the detection limits (3 sigma) of the method were 3.9 pg ml(-1) for As(III), 2.7 pg ml(-1) for As(V), 2.6 pg ml(-1) for MMA(V) and 124 pg ml(-1) for total As with the relative standard deviations less than 7.0% (C = 0.1 ng ml(-1), n = 7), and the enrichment factor was 286, 262 and 260 for As(III), As(V) and MMA(V), respectively. The developed method was successfully applied for the speciation of arsenic in the extracts of human hair.

Abstract
Nanometer-sized titanium dioxide was used as a solid-phase extractant for the separation and preconcentration of trace amounts of Al(III) prior to its determination by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ET AAS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). The optimal conditions for the proposed solid phase extraction (SPE; 50mg TiO(2), 10 min extraction time, pH 6.0, HCl and HNO(3) as eluents) and ET AAS measurement (1500 degrees C pyrolysis and 2600 degrees C atomization temperatures, Mg(NO(3))(2) as matrix modifier) were obtained. The adsorption capacity of TiO(2) was 4.1mg Al g(-1) TiO(2). Two modes of the proposed procedure were compared, (I) batch and elution mode with the elution of Al from TiO(2) phase by nitric or hydrochloric acid, and (II) batch and slurry mode (without elution) with the direct TiO(2) phase-slurry sampling. Finally, the batch and slurry mode of nanometer-sized TiO(2) SPE with slurry ET AAS detection and quantification was preferred and used for the determination of trace amounts of total dissolved cationic Al species in synthetic and natural water samples. The method accuracy was checked by the analysis of lake water CRM TMDA-61 and by the technique of analyte addition (sample spiking). Under the optimal conditions, the calibration curve for batch and slurry TiO(2) SPE with a 10-fold preconcentration was linear up to 40 microg L(-1) Al. The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.11 microg L(-1) Al and 0.35 microg L(-1) Al, respectively, with a preconcentration factor of 20 and a relative standard deviation (RSD) lower than 5%.
