The effects of scapular taping on electromyographic muscle activity and proprioception feedback in healthy shoulders

Comparing shoulder proprioception, upper extremity dynamic stability, and hand grip strength in overhead athletes with and without scapular dyskinesis

INTRODUCTION

Scapular dyskinesis is prevalent among asymptomatic athletes, particularly those involved in overhead activities, and can significantly impact their neuromuscular control. These changes may impair upper extremity function and strength, elevating the risk of injury. Therefore, it is imperative to investigate how scapular dyskinesis affects shoulder proprioception, upper extremity dynamic stability, and hand grip strength in overhead athletes. This study compared these parameters between overhead athletes with and without scapular dyskinesis.

METHODS

The study included twenty asymptomatic professional overhead athletes with scapular dyskinesis and twenty without scapular dyskinesis, identified using the lateral scapular slide test. In this cross-sectional study, shoulder active joint position sense, serving as shoulder proprioception, was measured using an isokinetic dynamometer. Upper extremity dynamic stability and hand grip strength were evaluated using an upper quarter modified star excursion balance test (UQ-mSEBT) and a handheld dynamometer.

RESULTS

The study found that the shoulder active joint position sense was significantly lower in the scapular dyskinesis group compared to the group without scapular dyskinesis (PExternal Rotation = 0.003, PInternal Rotation < 0.001, and PForward Flexion = 0.002). However, the two groups had no significant differences in UQ-mSEBT and hand grip strength scores.

CONCLUSIONS

The results showed that scapular dyskinesis could affect the sense of shoulder active joint position among asymptomatic overhead athletes. However, it did not affect their upper extremity dynamic stability and hand grip strength.

Influence of taping on joint proprioception: a systematic review with between and within group meta-analysis

Taping is increasingly used to manage proprioceptive deficits, but existing reviews on its impact have shortcomings. To accurately assess the effects of taping, a separate meta-analyses for different population groups and tape types is needed. Therefore, both between- and within-group meta-analyses are needed to evaluate the influence of taping on proprioception. According to PRISMA guidelines, a literature search was conducted across seven databases (Web of Science, PEDro, Pubmed, EBSCO, Scopus, ERIC, SportDiscus, Psychinfo) and one register (CENTRAL) using the keywords "tape" and "proprioception". Out of 1372 records, 91 studies, involving 2718 individuals, met the inclusion criteria outlined in the systematic review. The meta-analyses revealed a significant between and within-group reduction in repositioning errors with taping compared to no tape (Hedge's g: -0.39, p < 0.001) and placebo taping (Hedge's g: -1.20, p < 0.001). Subgroup and sensitivity analyses further confirmed the reliability of the overall between and within-group analyses. The between-group results further demonstrated that both elastic tape and rigid tape had similar efficacy to improve repositioning errors in both healthy and fatigued populations. Additional analyses on the threshold to detection of passive motion and active movement extent discrimination apparatus revealed no significant influence of taping. In conclusion, the findings highlight the potential of taping to enhance joint repositioning accuracy compared to no tape or placebo taping. Further research needs to uncover underlying mechanisms and refine the application of taping for diverse populations with proprioceptive deficits.

Scapular kinesiotaping improves upper extremity functionality in healthy active subjects

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of scapular kinesiotaping and sham-taping applications on upper extremity functionality in healthy active subjects.

METHODS

In total, 60 participants were randomly divided into two groups: scapular kinesiotaping group (n=30) and sham-taping group (n=30). While scapular kinesiotaping was applied to the kinesiotaping group, scapular rigid taping was applied to the sham-taping group. At the end of the third day of the taping application, the individuals were re-evaluated.

RESULTS

Participants in the scapular kinesiotaping group showed improvement in upper extremity functionality and quality of life after taping (p<0.05). In the sham-taping group, there was no statistically significant difference after taping (p>0.05).

CONCLUSION

Scapular kinesiotaping is effective in improving upper extremity functionality in healthy active subjects.

Effects of elastic kinesiology taping on shoulder proprioception: a systematic review

BACKGROUND

Shoulder injuries are associated with proprioceptive deficits. Elastic kinesiology tape (KT) is used for treating musculoskeletal disorders, including shoulder injuries, as it arguably improves proprioception.

OBJECTIVE

To synthesize the evidence on the effects of elastic KT on proprioception in healthy and pathological shoulders.

METHODS

Four databases (PubMed, WoS, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus) were searched for studies that investigated the effects of elastic KT on shoulder proprioception. Outcome measures were active joint position sense (AJPS), passive joint position sense (PJPS), kinesthesia, sense of force (SoF), and sense of velocity (SoV). Risk of bias (RoB) was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration RoB tool for randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and the ROBINS-1 for non-RCTs, while the certainty of evidence was determined using GRADE.

RESULTS

Eight studies (5 RCTs, 3 non-RCTs) were included, yielding 187 shoulders (102 healthy and 85 pathological shoulders). RoB ranged from low (2 studies), moderate (5 studies), to high (1 study). Elastic KT has a mixed effect on AJPS of healthy shoulders (n=79) (low certainty). Elastic KT improves AJPS (subacromial pain syndrome and rotator cuff tendinopathy, n=52) and PJPS (chronic hemiparetic shoulders, n=13) among pathological shoulders (very low certainty). Elastic KT has no effect on kinesthesia among individuals with subacromial pain syndrome (n=30) (very low certainty).

CONCLUSION

There is very low to low certainty of evidence that elastic KT enhances shoulder AJPS and PJPS. The aggregate of evidence is currently so low that any recommendation on the effectiveness of elastic KT on shoulder proprioception remains speculative.

The prolonged effect of Kinesio Taping on joint torque and muscle activity

PURPOSE

Although Kinesio Taping has been extensively used, evidence about the effect of Kinesio Taping is still insufficient. The aim is to determine the effect of Kinesio Taping on elbow joint torque and muscle activity in time and frequency domains.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Thirty-eight healthy subjects were (27 females and 11 males) randomly divided into control and Kinesio Taping groups. Kinesio Taping was applied over biceps brachii muscle in Kinesio Taping group, whereas no taping was applied to control group. Maximum elbow joint torque and electromyography activity in time and frequency domains were assessed during maximum isometric contraction of biceps brachii muscle at baseline, after 10 min, 30 min, and 24 h. Repeated measure ANOVA and mixed ANOVA tests were used for in-group and between-group comparisons, respectively.

RESULTS

Elbow joint torques among four assessment sessions were statistically altered in Kinesio Taping group and greater in Kinesio Taping group than in control group (F(3,57)= 3.317, p = 0.026, ηp2 = 0.149; F(3,108)=3.325, p = 0.022, ηp2 = 0.085; respectively). No difference was found in time domain muscle activity among assessment sessions in each group and comparison of groups (p > 0.05). Low-gamma band activity was changed among assessment sessions in Kinesio Taping group (F(3,57)= 6.946, p < 0.001, ηp2 = 0.268) while group × time interaction was not determined.

CONCLUSIONS

Kinesio Taping may influence joint torque of elbow more than without Kinesio Taping condition in 24th hour but the interpretation of this effect as a muscle strength enhancement compared with baseline can be arguable. Even if Kinesio Taping could not affect muscle activity in time domain, low-gamma band activity which is closely related to somatosensorial input may reach highest magnitude 24 h after Kinesio Taping.

Effects of the direction of Kinesio taping on sensation and postural control before and after muscle fatigue in healthy athletes

In this study, Kinesio tape (KT) was applied in two different directions to the gastrocnemius muscle, the most important muscle in stance stability, to investigate the effect of different taping directions on overall balance and sensation systems before versus after muscle fatigue. The participants, comprising 45 healthy athletes, were randomly divided into three groups: the placebo taping group (PTG), the facilitation KT group (FKTG), and the inhibition KT group (IKTG). The tests involved in this study were a balance test, a superficial sensory function test, and a combined cortical sensation test. The data from these tests were collected before taping, after taping and a 10-min rest, and immediately after continuous heel raises were performed to fatigue. The results of the balance tests showed no significant group × time interaction, whether subjects stood barefoot on one foot or stood on a soft mat with eyes open or closed (p > 0.05). Only the sway distance and sway velocity of the center of pressure (COP) when subjects stood barefoot on one foot with eyes open were significantly higher in the inhibition taping group than in the placebo taping group (p < 0.05). In addition, significant differences were noted in the sway area and sway distance of the COP before taping, after taping, and after exercise to fatigue when the participants stood on the soft mat with their eyes open (p < 0.05). When the participants stood on the soft mat on one foot with their eyes closed, no significant differences were noted among the groups. When subjects stood on a soft mat on one foot with eyes open, significant improvements were noted after fatiguing exercise versus before taping for all three groups (p < 0.05). The results of the superficial sensory test showed no significant group × time interaction and no difference among the three taping conditions or before/after taping and after fatiguing exercise. Only in the two-point discrimination test was a sensory difference observed, with the facilitation taping group having a significantly shorter discrimination distance than the placebo taping and inhibition taping groups (p < 0.05). The present study showed that KT application for a simple balance task (e.g., barefoot on a hard floor with eyes open) may slightly influence postural control, especially when the inhibition method is used. However, more difficult balance tasks (e.g., barefoot on a soft mat with eyes closed) show no effect of KT application-either the facilitation method or the inhibition method-on posture control.

Effects of Pelvic Stabilization Training with Lateral and Posterior Tilt Taping on Pelvic Inclination, Muscle Strength, and Gait Function in Patients with Stroke: A Randomized Controlled Study

Background

This study was aimed at investigating the effect of pelvic tilt taping on muscle strength, pelvic inclination, and gait function in patients with stroke.

Methods

A total of 60 patients with stroke were included in our study and randomly divided into three groups: the posterior pelvic tilt taping (PPTT, n = 20), the lateral pelvic tilt taping (LPPP) with PPTT (LPPP+PPTT, n = 20), and the control (n = 20) groups. All participants performed pelvic stabilization exercises consisting of 6 movements: supine, side lying, quadruped, sitting, squatting, and standing (30 min/day, five days/week, for six weeks). PPTT to correct anterior pelvic tilt was applied to the LPTT+PPTT and PPTT groups, and lateral pelvic tilt taping was additionally applied to the LPTT+PPTT group. LPTT was performed to correct the pelvis tilted to the affected side, and PPTT was performed to correct the anterior pelvic tilt. The control group did not undergo taping. A hand-held dynamometer was used to measure the hip abductor muscle strength. In addition, a palpation meter and 10-meter walk test were used to assess pelvic inclination and gait function.

Results

Muscle strength was significantly stronger in the LPTT+PPTT group than in the other two groups (p = 0.01). The anterior pelvic tilt was significantly improved in the taping group compared to the control group (p < 0.001), and the lateral pelvic tilt was significantly improved in the LPTT+PPTT group compared to the other two groups (p < 0.001). Significantly greater improvements in gait speed were observed in the LPTT+PPTT group than in the other two groups (p = 0.02).

Conclusions

PPPT can significantly affect pelvic alignment and walking speed in patients with stroke, and the additional application of LPTT can further strengthen these effects. Therefore, we suggest using taping as an auxiliary therapeutic-intervention method in postural control training.

Effects of kinesiotaping on disability and pain in patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy: double-blind randomized clinical trial

Background

Kinesiotaping (KT) is widely used in several musculoskeletal disorders particularly in shoulder pain. However, literature shows controversial results regarding the effect of KT on shoulder pathology. The aim of this study was to assess the clinical effects of KT in the short term on rotator cuff tendinopathy (RCT).

Methods

A randomized controlled double-blind clinical trial was conducted. The sample consisted of 50 subjects (25 per group). Patients were randomly assigned to the KT group (to receive therapeutic KT application) or to the placebo group (to receive sham KT application). Taping was applied every 4 days, a total of three times during the study period. We assessed the patients at baseline, at the end of taping period (D12), and at one-month post-taping (D30). Primary outcome was assessed through the Arabic version of the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire (DASH). Secondary outcomes were assessed through Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain intensity at rest (VASr), during active movement (VASm), and at night (VASn).

Results

There were no significant differences between the two groups in the demographic and clinical characteristics and the pre-test scores. Results of repeated measures ANOVA showed significant improvement in DASH scores and in VAS for pain (at rest, during active movement and at night) from D12 in both groups. The use of ANCOVA, controlling for pre-test scores, showed no significant differences between groups, except for VASm at D30.

Conclusion

This study showed that the standardized therapeutic KT used for shoulder pain was not superior to a sham KT application in improving pain and disabilities in patients with RCT.

Four weeks of exercise regimen for sedentary workers with rounded shoulder posture: a randomized controlled study

BACKGROUND

Rounded shoulder (RS) posture causes neck and shoulder pathologies. Mechanical correction taping (MCT) is often incorporated into postural corrective therapies; however, its effects on muscle stiffness are unclear.

OBJECTIVE

We investigated the effect of MCT with different tape fabrics, along with exercise, on upper trapezius and pectoralis minor muscle stiffness and the posture of sedentary workers.

DESIGN AND SETTING

A randomized controlled study was performed at Aydın Adnan Menderes University, Aydın, Turkey.

METHODS

The study included 39 workers with RS posture. Two intervention groups (performance tape: PT and classic tape: CT) were taped twice a week and administered a home exercise program for 4 weeks. The control (C) group performed only home exercises. RS was measured using an acromion-testing table (AT), stiffness using shear wave elastography ultrasound, and shoulder angle (SA) using a smartphone application at baseline and 4 weeks. Time and group interactions were determined using 3 × 2 mixed analysis of variance.

RESULTS

Intragroup analyses revealed a significant main effect of time on AT distance (η2 = 0.445) and SA (η2 = 0.325) in the PT and C groups (P < 0.05) and left upper trapezius stiffness (η2 = 0.287) in the CT and C groups (P < 0.05). In the post hoc analyses, no difference was noted between the groups from baseline to 4 weeks (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Scapular MCT added to postural exercises did not show any difference between the intervention groups and controls in terms of muscle stiffness and posture in sedentary workers.

Systematic Review of Lumbar Elastic Tape on Trunk Mobility: A Debatable Issue

Objectives

To systematically review the literature to analyze the effect of lumbar elastic tape application on trunk mobility, surpassing the minimal detectable change of the used outcome measurement tool, and to analyze the additional effect of applied tension and direction of elastic tape application in low back pain and participants without low back pain.

Data Sources

Four databases were used: PubMed, Web of Science, Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro), and Google Scholar.

Study Selection

The inclusion criteria were randomized and clinical controlled trials evaluating the effectiveness of lumbar elastic tape application on trunk mobility.

Data Extraction

Two researchers executed the search and a third author was consulted to resolve disagreements. The methodological quality was scored using the PEDro scale, with studies scoring ≤5 being excluded.

Data Synthesis

Eight out of 6799 studies were included; 5 studied individuals with low back pain, and 3 studied participants without low back pain. Two studies scored low on the PEDro scale and were excluded. None of the reported significant changes in trunk mobility due to elastic tape application exceeded the indicated minimal detectable change. No conclusions can be drawn from the direction and applied tension of elastic tape application.

Conclusions

Based on the results of this systematic review, there is no evidence supporting the effect of lumbar elastic tape application. We recommend consensus in the use of more reliable and valid instruments in future studies.

Does scapular corrective taping alter periscapular muscle activity and 3-dimensional scapular kinematics? A systematic review

STUDY DESIGN

This is a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION

Scapular taping is widely used in the management of scapular dysfunction. However, its effects on the scapular kinematics and the electromyography (EMG) activity of the periscapular muscles are not clear.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study was to systematically review the current literature to examine whether scapular corrective taping alters the EMG activity of the periscapular muscles and the 3-dimensional scapular kinematics.

METHOD

MEDLINE and Web of Science databases were searched using specific mesh terms up to April 2018. A hand search was also conducted on the reference list of the included articles. A total of 157 studies were identified, and they were further analyzed for the eligibility to the systematic review. Studies that investigated the effects of scapular corrective taping on the EMG activity of the periscapular muscles and on the 3-dimensional scapular kinematics on patients with shoulder problems or asymptomatic subjects were eligible for the systematic review. The Cochrane Effective Practice and Organization of Care criteria were modified and used for the risk-of-bias assessment.

RESULTS

Eleven articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in the systematic review. Five studies investigated the effects of corrective taping on the scapular kinematics and 8 studies reported the effects of corrective taping on the EMG activity of the periscapular muscles. There was an agreement among the studies that scapular upward rotation is increased with the corrective taping, while there are inconsistent results concerning the scapular external rotation and posterior tilt. In addition, studies mostly reported that corrective taping decreases the activity of the upper trapezius, while it has conflicting effects on the activity patterns of other periscapular muscles.

DISCUSSION

Scapular corrective taping was found to increase the scapular upward rotation; however, its effects on scapular external rotation and posterior tilt are controversial. It was also found that corrective taping might decrease the EMG activity of the upper trapezius, while it had no effects on the activity of lower trapezius, and its effects on other periscapular muscles were controversial.

CONCLUSION

The results of the studies indicated that scapular corrective taping might alter the 3-dimensional scapular kinematics, while there are controversies about the effects of corrective taping on the EMG activity of the periscapular muscles. Further studies are needed to clarify the conflicts.

Effect of inhibitory kinesiotaping on spasticity in patients with chronic stroke: a randomized controlled pilot trial

BACKGROUND

There is no consensus regarding the positive effect of kinesiotaping (KT) on spasticity. All previous studies have measured spasticity by Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) scale which is a subjective clinical assessment.

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the effect of inhibitory KT on the spasticity of plantar flexor muscles using both Hoffmann-reflex (H-reflex) and MAS scale. H-reflex is a neurophysiological technique that objectively evaluates spasticity by reflecting the excitability of motor neurons.

METHODS

Thirty patients were randomly assigned into inhibitory KT (n = 15) and control (n = 15) groups. The inhibitory KT group received KT from insertion to the origin of gastrocsoleus muscle . Spasticity was assessed at baseline and 30 min and 48 h after taping by H-reflex and MAS scale. The control group received no taping and spasticity was assessed at baseline and 30 min and 48 h after the baseline.

RESULT

There was a significant time × group effect for the maximal peak-to-peak amplitude of the H_max/M_max ratio (p = .007), indicating that H_max/M_max ratio decreased significantly after 48 h in the inhibitory KT in comparison with the baseline (P = .001) and 30 min after-intervention (p = .002); meanwhile, it did not change significantly in the control group (P > .05). However, none of the groups showed a statistically significant change in MAS score (P > .05).

CONCLUSIONS

Application of inhibitory KT was found to be able to reduce the H_max/M_max ratio in patients with stroke. As a result, inhibitory KT could have beneficial effects on spasticity.

A Novel Rehabilitation Program Using Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) and Taping for Shoulder Pain in Swimmers: A Protocol and Case Example

In-pool return to swim protocols have been described for swimmers returning from being deactivated from swimming due to a shoulder injury who have full shoulder strength. Many swimmers actively participate in swim practice and competition with shoulder pain and experience deficits in performance. There are multiple reported risk factors associated with shoulder pain among swimmers, including training errors and physical impairments. These include pool and dry-land training errors, weakness in the scapular stabilizers and rotator cuff, and muscle tightness. A need exists for dry-land rehabilitation programs for impairments common to swimmers that can be performed in a traditional outpatient physical therapy setting. The purpose of this clinical commentary is to present a protocol using neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), taping, strengthening, and stretching to address impairments that are common among swimmers while allowing continued active participation in practice and competition.

Acute effect of inhibitory kinesio-tape of the upper trapezius on lower trapezius muscle excitation in healthy shoulders

INTRODUCTION

Shoulder pain increases excitation of the upper trapezius (UT) and reduces excitation in the lower trapezius (LT). Despite inconclusive evidence, kinesio-tape (KT) is often used to modify muscular excitation within the UT and/or LT to help correct alterations in scapular position and motion associated with shoulder pain/injury. The objective of the current study was to determine if inhibitory KT to the UT acutely increases LT excitation and if load alters the magnitude of change in the excitation observed.

METHODS

Twenty-two (N = 22, 11 female) individuals with healthy shoulders (24 ± 3 years) completed 10 repetitions of an arm elevation task during 3 taping conditions (no-tape, experimental KT, sham KT) and 2 loading conditions (no load and loaded). Whole-muscle (mean grid) and spatial distribution (grid row) of LT excitation (root mean squared; RMS) was measured using a single high-density surface electromyography 32-electrode grid.

RESULTS

There was a main effect for loading condition on whole-muscle LT RMS, F (1, 19) = 38.038, p < .001, partial η² = 0.667. Whole-muscle LT RMS was significantly higher in the loaded condition (0.055 V ±0 .005) compared to the no-load condition (0.038 V ±0 .004). No effect of tape condition was observed on whole-muscle or spatial distribution of RMS.

CONCLUSION

Our findings suggest that inhibitory KT to the UT does not alter whole-muscle excitation or shift the distribution of excitation within the LT during a repeated arm elevation task in healthy shoulders.

Effects of kinesio taping on neck-shoulder discomfort and EMG responses during smartphone texting in healthy young adults

BACKGROUND

While kinesio taping (KT) is used in several clinical settings to correct posture and reduce pain, KT effects during smartphone texting are unknown.

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the effects among healthy young adults of KT on neck-shoulder discomfort and electromyographic (EMG) responses of neck and upper trunk muscles during smartphone texting.

METHODS

Twenty-four participants performed a 30-minute texting task on a smartphone using both hands at two separate times under one of two conditions: KT on the right shoulder and no taping. Neck-shoulder discomfort was assessed, along with the normalized root mean square (NRMS) and normalized median frequency (NMF) of the right cervical erector spinae (CES), lower trapezius (LT), and serratus anterior (SA).

RESULTS

Compared to baseline, both groups had significantly greater neck-shoulder discomfort, and NRMS and NMF of all muscles (p < 0.001) after performing a 30-minute texting task. Comparing between groups, the KT group experienced significantly less neck-shoulder discomfort, and demonstrated delayed deterioration of NRMS and NMF of right CES and LT muscles (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

During smartphone texting, KT on the shoulder decreased neck-shoulder discomfort and delayed reduction of activation and fatigue of neck and upper trunk muscles among healthy young adults.

Kinetic Chain Exercise Intervention Improved Spiking Consistency and Kinematics in Volleyball Players With Scapular Dyskinesis

J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2020-Scapular dyskinesis (SD) is a common problem among volleyball players with chronic shoulder pain. This randomized controlled study examined the effectiveness of kinetic chain (KC) training on neuromuscular performance of the scapula and trunk during volleyball spikes. Forty volleyball players with SD and chronic shoulder pain received 4 weeks of KC training or the conventional shoulder exercise training (CT). Shoulder pain was assessed using the visual analogue scale (VAS) every week. The kinematics and muscle activation of the shoulder and upper trunk, and proprioceptive feedback magnitude (PFM) for scapular movement consistency, were recorded at the maximum shoulder flexion (T1) and ball contact (T2) during spiking tasks. The two-way repeated measures analysis of variances was used to assess the between-group differences before and after the intervention. The results showed a significant time by group interaction for the upper trunk rotation (p < 0.001) and PFM (p = 0.03) at T2. The post-hoc test indicated that the KC group significantly increased contralateral rotation of the upper trunk (9.63 ± 4.19° vs. -4.25 ± 10.05°), and improved movement consistency (error: 8.88 ± 11.52° vs. 19.73 ± 12.79°) at T2 compared with the CT group. Significant time effects were also identified for VAS, scapular upward rotation (T1 and T2), upper trunk contralateral side-bending and PFM at T1, and upper trunk contralateral rotation at T2. In conclusion, both KC and CT training would relieve shoulder pain and improve scapular and trunk movement, whereas the KC program was more effective for increasing scapular movement consistency and upper trunk rotation during volleyball spikes.

Kinesiotaping for the Rehabilitation of Rotator Cuff-Related Shoulder Pain: A Randomized Clinical Trial

BACKGROUND

Kinesiotaping (KT) has been widely used in clinical practice. Current evidence is insufficient to support the use of KT for treating rotator cuff-related shoulder pain (RCRSP), as its mid- and long-term effects have not been investigated.

HYPOTHESES

Individuals using KT will achieve faster improvements in symptoms and functional limitations compared with those not using it. They will also present a greater increase in pain-free range of motion (ROM) and acromiohumeral distance (AHD) at the end of the treatment.

STUDY DESIGN

Randomized controlled trial (NCT02881021).

METHODS

A total of 52 individuals with RCRSP, randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups (experimental: KT; control: no-KT), underwent a 6-week rehabilitation program composed of 10 physical therapy sessions. KT was added to the treatment of the KT group. Symptoms and functional limitations were assessed using the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire (primary outcome); Brief Pain Inventory (BPI); and Western Ontario Rotator Cuff (WORC) index at baseline, 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 12 weeks, and 6 months. AHD, pain-free ROM, and full ROM were measured at baseline and at week 6. The effects of KT were assessed using a nonparametric analysis for longitudinal data.

RESULTS

No significant group × time interactions (0.112 ≤ P ≤ 0.726) were found for all outcomes. Time effects were observed as both groups showed significant improvements for all studied outcomes (DASH, BPI, and WORC, p < 0.0001; AHD, p = 0.017; pain-free ROM, p < 0.0001; and full ROM abduction, p ≤ 0.0001).

CONCLUSION

Whereas symptoms, functional limitations, ROM, and AHD improved in both groups, the addition of KT did not lead to superior outcomes compared with exercise-based treatment alone, in the mid and long term, for individuals with RCRSP.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Clinicians should not expect supplementary mid- or long-term gains with KT to reduce pain, improve shoulder function and ROM, or increase AHD if a rehabilitation program focusing on shoulder neuromuscular control is concurrently provided as treatment for individuals with RCRSP.

Can a Conservative Rehabilitation Strategy Improve Shoulder Proprioception? A Systematic Review

CONTEXT

Proprioception deficits contribute to persistent and recurring physical disability, particularly with shoulder disorders. Proprioceptive training is thus prescribed in clinical practice. It is unclear whether nonsurgical rehabilitation can optimize shoulder proprioception.

OBJECTIVES

To summarize the available evidence of conservative rehabilitation (ie, nonsurgical) on proprioception among individuals with shoulder disorders.

EVIDENCE ACQUISITION

PubMed, Web of Science, and EBSCO were systematically searched, from inception until November 24, 2019. Selected articles were systematically assessed, and the methodological quality was established using the Dutch Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool and the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines were utilized for this review. The conservative treatments were categorized as follows: (1) conventional therapy, (2) proprioceptive training, (3) elastic kinesiology tape, and (4) other passive therapies.

EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS

Twelve articles were included, yielding 58 healthy control shoulders and 362 shoulders affected by impingement syndrome, glenohumeral dislocations, nonspecific shoulder pain, rotator cuff dysfunction, or subluxation poststroke. The level of agreement between the evaluators was excellent (84.9%), and the studies were evaluated to be of fair to excellent quality (risk of bias: 28.5%-100%). This review suggests, with moderate evidence, that proprioceptive training (upper-body wobble board or flexible foil training) can improve proprioception in the midterm. No decisive evidence exists to suggest that conventional therapy is of added value to enhance shoulder proprioception. Conflicting evidence was found for the improvement of proprioception with the application of elastic kinesiology tape, while moderate evidence suggests that passive modalities, such as microcurrent electrical stimulation and bracing, are not effective for proprioceptive rehabilitation of the shoulder.

CONCLUSIONS

Proprioceptive training demonstrates the strongest evidence for the effective rehabilitation of individuals with a shoulder proprioceptive deficit. Elastic kinesiology tape does not appear to affect the sense of shoulder proprioception. This review suggests a possible specificity of training effect with shoulder proprioception.

Effect of elastic scapular taping on shoulder and spine kinematics in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to investigate the short-term effects of scapular repositioning using an elastic taping technique on the three-dimensional (3-D) shoulder and thoracic kinematics during various activities of daily living (ADLs) in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (IS).

METHODS

Shoulder and spine kinematics during five ADL movement tasks were assessed in 24 adolescents with IS (3 males and 21 females; mean age: 15.8 years; age range: 14-17 years) before and 15 min after elastic scapular taping. All the participants had a moderate curve magnitude (Cobb angle: 20°-45°), with a primary thoracic curve. A 3-D electromagnetic tracking system (Ascension Technology Corporation, Shelburne, VT, USA) was used to record 3-D shoulder and thoracic kinematics. ADL movement tasks included touching the mouth/drinking, touching the back, touching the contralateral shoulder, reaching upward, and bilateral 4-kg weight lifting. Two separate strips of elastic tape were applied using the same correction technique for each shoulder and scapular region to control scapular alterations in the resting position.

RESULTS

Elastic scapular taping significantly improved scapular external rotation and scapular upward rotation. Similarly, humeral horizontal adduction, external rotation, thoracic flexion, and lateral bending significantly increased in the taped condition depending on the specific task (p<0.05).

CONCLUSION

Elastic scapular taping can change scapular orientations on the convex and concave sides, thereby affecting upper extremity and trunk kinematics. Thus, the dynamic stability of the scapula increases to produce larger movements during functional activities.

Effects of trunk rehabilitation with kinesio and placebo taping on static and dynamic sitting postural control in individuals with chronic stroke: A randomized controlled trial

Background: Impaired trunk postural control is common after stroke. Combining kinesio taping with trunk rehabilitation has been shown to enhance the recovery of postural control ability in patients with stroke.Objective: We investigated whether the combination of kinesio taping with trunk rehabilitation would improve dynamic and static sitting stability after stroke.Methods: Twenty-eight patients with stroke were recruited and randomly assigned to one of the two 8-week trunk rehabilitation programs with kinesio (experimental group) or placebo taping (control group). Outcome measures were dynamic forward, dynamic backward, affected-side, and unaffected-side sway areas, static sway area and length, and the total limit of stability (LOS) area. The variables were measured using the BioRescue analysis system. All outcome measures were assessed at baseline and after 8 weeks of trunk rehabilitation.Results: Significant increases were observed in the dynamic forward, dynamic backward, affected-side, and unaffected-side sway areas, and the total LOS area, in the experimental and control groups, whereas decreases were observed in the static sway area and length. The dynamic forward sway area was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group, but there were no significant differences between the groups in the other variables.Conclusions: Trunk rehabilitation is effective for improving dynamic and static sitting stability after stroke. The addition of kinesio taping to the back muscles further increases forward mobility.

Effects of trapezius kinesio taping on scapular kinematics and associated muscular activation in subjects with scapular dyskinesis

STUDY DESIGN

Crossover repeated-measure design.

INTRODUCTION

Scapular dyskinesis rehabilitation programs that focus on inhibiting upper trapezius (UT) and activating the lower trapezius (LT) may assist in restoring scapular movements. We hypothesized that taping may be able to normalize scapular movements and associated muscular recruitment.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study was to investigate the immediate effects of kinesio taping over trapezius on scapular kinematics and muscular activation in different dyskinesis patterns. We expected that taping can improve scapular kinematics and muscular activation in subjects with dyskinesis.

METHODS

Fifty-four participants with inferior angle prominence (pattern I), medial border prominence (pattern II), and mixed pattern (pattern I + II) were recruited. Kinesio taping was applied over 3 parts of trapezius muscles, including UT, middle trapezius (MT), and LT. The scapular kinematics and electromyographic data of trapezius and serratus anterior were collected during scapular plane elevation without taping and after each taping application.

RESULTS

UT taping decreased UT activity (5%-7%; P = .001-.003) in 72% of participants with pattern II and pattern I + II dyskinesis, with increased posterior tipping (2.2°-2.5°; P = .003) in pattern II dyskinesis. MT taping increased UT activity (3%; P = .003) in 48% of participants with pattern II dyskinesis.

DISCUSSION

The taping over the trapezius muscle may help to restore coordinated scapular muscle balance and increased upward rotation of the scapula, especially in pattern II dyskinesis. Although no electromyography or kinematic difference was found with LT taping in each dyskinesis pattern, methods of applying LT taping need to be further investigated.

CONCLUSION

Reduced UT muscle activity and scapular posterior tipping are appropriate when applying taping over UT muscle in patterns II and I + II dyskinesis. Caution should be taken when applying taping over MT and LT muscles in terms of increased UT activity, especially in pattern II dyskinesis.

Efficacy of 3 therapeutic taping configurations for children with brachial plexus birth palsy

STUDY DESIGN

Cross-sectional clinical measurement study.

INTRODUCTION

Scapular winging is a frequent complaint among children with brachial plexus birth palsy (BPBP). Therapeutic taping for scapular stabilization has been reported to decrease scapular winging.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

This study aimed to determine which therapeutic taping construct was most effective for children with BPBP.

METHODS

Twenty-eight children with BPBP participated in motion capture assessment with 4 taping conditions: (1) no tape, (2) facilitation of rhomboid major and rhomboid minor, (3) facilitation of middle and lower trapezius, and (4) facilitation of rhomboid major, rhomboid minor, and middle and lower trapezius (combination of both 2 and 3, referred to as combined taping). The participants held their arms in 4 positions: (1) neutral with arms by their sides, (2) hand to mouth, (3) hand to belly, and (4) maximum crossbody adduction (CBA). The scapulothoracic, glenohumeral and humerothoracic (HT) joint angles and joint angular displacements were compared using multivariate analyses of variance with Bonferroni corrections.

RESULTS

Scapular winging was significantly decreased in both the trapezius and combined taping conditions in all positions compared with no tape. Rhomboids taping had no effect. Combined taping reduced HT CBA in the CBA position.

CONCLUSIONS

Rhomboid taping cannot be recommended for treatment of children with BPBP. Both trapezius and combined taping approaches reduced scapular winging, but HT CBA was limited with combined taping. Therefore, therapeutic taping of middle and lower trapezius was the most effective configuration for scapular stabilization in children with BPBP. Resting posture improved, but performance of the positions was not significantly improved.

Does kinesiotaping affect standing balance in healthy individuals? A pilot, double-blind, randomized-controlled study

Objectives

This study aims to investigate the immediate and short-term effects of kinesiotaping (KT) on balance, when applied to the ankles of healthy individuals.

Patients and methods

In this pilot, double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled study, a total of 24 healthy male individuals (mean age 31.8 years; range, 22 to 40 years) were randomized into two groups as KT and sham between January 2014 to March 2014. The KT group had a therapeutic KT application which could provide the ankle stability. The control group had a prespecified sham application. Balance testing was done before, immediately after and 24 hours after the application of KT. Anteroposterior, mediolateral, and overall stability indexes (APSI, MLSI, and OSI, respectively) were measured and given in relative treatment effect (RTE).

Results

There was no statistically significant interaction between the intervention and time for all stability indexes. The main effects were evaluated. The main effect of time showed a significant difference in terms of RTE and mean ranks at all time points for the MLSI and OSI (p=0.034 and p=0.009, respectively). The KT of ankle had an immediate positive effect on standing balance of healthy individuals which did not sustain after 24 hours. The main effect of group showed that there was a significant difference in the RTE levels between the intervention groups for all indexes. Based on the rank means, the KT group had a better stability than the sham group for all indexes.

Conclusion

Our study results suggest that KT of ankle has an immediate positive effect on standing balance of healthy individuals by increasing mediolateral stability of the ankle.

Effectiveness of stretching exercise versus kinesiotaping in improving length of the pectoralis minor: A systematic review and network meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE

Shortness of the pectoralis minor (PM) is a potential mechanism underlying shoulder impingement syndrome. Few studies have examined the effects of kinesiotaping and stretching exercise on PM length or index. This systematic review and network meta-analysis investigated the effects of stretching exercise and kinesiotaping on PM length and index in adults.

METHODS

This study followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Randomised controlled trials including adults with or without symptomatic shoulders were included. Heterogeneity between studies was assessed using I2 statistics, and publication bias was evaluated by constructing a funnel plot.

RESULTS

We extracted data from six randomised controlled trials that included 263 participants (age range: 18-50 years). Compared with usual care, kinesiotaping resulted in greater improvement in PM length (mean difference, 1.15 cm; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.20-2.10 cm). Compared with usual care and kinesiotaping, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching increased PMI significantly, with a mean difference of 1.40 (95% CI: 1.17-1.63) and 1.08 (95% CI: 0.29-1.87) cm, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Compared with no intervention, kinesiotaping is beneficial for lengthening the PM. Intervention with static stretching alone has no effect on PM length. Compared with kinesiotaping alone and no intervention, PNF stretching increases PMI.

Force irradiation effect of kinesiotaping on contralateral muscle activation

We aimed to determine the force irradiation effect of kinesiotaping (KT) on contralateral muscle activity during unilateral muscle contraction. Forty healthy (26 females, 14 males) subjects were divided into two groups: KT and control groups. KT was applied on the biceps brachii at the contralateral limb (non-dominant limb) in the KT group, whereas no taping was applied to the control group. All participants performed unilateral isometric, concentric, and eccentric contractions with their dominant upper limbs (exercised limb) by means of an isokinetic dynamometer, while the contralateral limb was in the resting condition, neutral position, and motionless during the testing procedure. During the exercise, contralateral biceps brachii muscle activity was recorded by surface electromyography (EMG). To quantify the muscle activation, EMG signals were expressed as a percentage of the maximal isometric voluntary contraction, which is referred to as %EMG_max. The KT group showed significantly higher %EMG_max in the biceps brachii compared to the control group at the contralateral limb during the isometric, concentric, and eccentric contractions (p = 0.035, p = 0.046, and p = 0.002, respectively) The median values of the contralateral muscle activity were 2.74 %EMG_max and 6.62 %EMG_max during the isometric contraction for the control and KT groups, respectively (p = 0.035). During the concentric contraction, the median values of the contralateral muscle activity were 1.61 %EMG_max and 9.39 %EMG_max for the control and KT groups, respectively (p = 0.046). The median values of the contralateral muscle activity were 4.49 %EMG_max and 22.89 %EMG_max for the eccentric contraction for the control and KT groups, respectively (p = 0.002). In conclusion, KT application on the contralateral limb increased the contralateral muscle activation in the biceps brachii during the unilateral isometric, concentric, and eccentric contractions.

A three-dimensional scapular motion analysis in patients with arthroscopic anterior capsulolabral repair of the shoulder: The effect of scapular stabilization taping

BACKGROUND

The aim of this study was to investigate the scapular kinematics during dynamic humeral movements in patients with arthroscopic anterior capsulolabral repair of the shoulder along with the potential biomechanical corrective effects of scapular stabilization taping.

METHODS

Twenty patients with unilateral traumatic anterior shoulder instability and arthroscopic anterior capsulolabral repair participated in the study. Dynamic shoulder kinematics were assessed during the scapular plane shoulder elevation for both the operated and non operated shoulders and also under two conditions: no-taping and taping. Statistical analysis to compare sides and conditions was performed with analysis of variance models.

RESULTS

The scapula was more internally rotated position in operated shoulders than in non operated shoulders. Furthermore, the scapula was less internally rotated and more downwardly rotated at 120° of elevation in the taping condition.

CONCLUSIONS

Operated shoulders demonstrated kinematics alterations when compared to non operated shoulders underwent arthroscopic anterior capsulolabral repair. Additionally, changes in the scapular orientation with the taping was very small but followed a pattern, which would be suggested to be an orientation that potentially produce more scapular stability and to increase stress on the inferior glenohumeral ligament.

Effects of Neck Taping in the Treatment of Hemispatial Neglect in Chronic Stroke Patients: A Pilot, Single Blind, Randomized Controlled Trial

Background and objectives: Hemispatial neglect is a common consequence of stroke, with an estimated incidence of 23%. Interventions for treating hemispatial neglect may be categorized as either top-down or bottom-up processing. The aim of top-down approaches is to train the person to voluntarily compensate for their neglect. Such approaches require awareness of the disorder and a high level of active participation by the patient. Differently, bottom-up approaches are based on manipulation of a patient’s sensory environment and so require less awareness of behavioral bias. In line with the latter, it is conceivable that elastic therapeutic taping applied to the left neck surface may provide bottom-up inputs that reduce hemispatial neglect symptoms. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of therapeutic neck taping on visuo-spatial abilities, neck motion, and kinesthetic sensibility in chronic stroke patients with hemispatial neglect. Materials and Methods: After randomization, 12 chronic stroke patients with hemispatial neglect received 30 consecutive days of real (treatment group) or sham (control group) neck taping. The outcomes were as follows: Stars Cancellation Test; neck active range of motion; Letter Cancellation Test; Comb and Razor Test; Cervical Joint Position Error Test evaluated before and after one month of taping. Results: Between-group comparison showed significant differences only for the Cervical Joint Position Error Test after treatment (p = 0.009). Conclusions: Our preliminary findings support the hypothesis that neck taping might improve cervicocephalic kinesthetic sensibility in chronic stroke patients with hemispatial neglect. Further studies are needed to strengthen our results and better investigate the effects of elastic therapeutic taping on visuo-spatial abilities in stroke patients with hemispatial neglect.

Effects of Elastic Therapeutic Taping on Joint Position Sense of the Ankle in Stroke Survivors

Impairments in ankle joint position sense along with muscle weakness greatly affect the recovery of balance among stroke survivors. Elastic therapeutic taping has been studied in musculoskeletal conditions of the ankle to improve joint position sense and its effects in stroke are not known. The aims of the study were to investigate the differences in joint position sense between paretic and nonparetic ankles and to examine the effects of elastic therapeutic taping on joint position sense of the paretic ankle in stroke survivors. Sixteen chronic stroke survivors participated in a 2-day protocol of ankle elastic therapeutic taping on the paretic side. Active and passive joint position sense at the ankle was measured by Biodex Isokinetic III system on both the paretic and nonparetic sides before elastic therapeutic taping and only the paretic side after elastic therapeutic taping. The active and passive ankle joint position sense values were significantly (P < 0.001) lower on the paretic side than the nonparetic side before intervention. Joint position sense significantly (P < 0.001) improved for the paretic ankle after elastic therapeutic taping. Chronic stroke survivors were deficient in ankle joint position sense on the paretic side. Elastic therapeutic taping was effective in the short term to improve active and passive joint position sense.

Effects of Rigid and Kinesio Taping on Shoulder Rotation Motions, Posterior Shoulder Tightness, and Posture in Overhead Athletes: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Context:Alterations in posture and motion patterns are thought to play a role in developing shoulder injuries in overhead athletes. Taping is widely used in the sporting population, but there are limited empirical data regarding its effectiveness.Objectives:To determine and compare the effects of rigid and kinesio taping on shoulder rotation motions, posterior shoulder tightness (PST), and posture in overhead athletes.Design:Randomized controlled trial.Setting:Athletic training rooms.Participants:Eighty-six asymptomatic elite overhead athletes.Interventions:Participants were randomly divided into 4 groups: rigid taping group (RTG) that underwent therapeutic rigid taping, kinesio taping group (KTG) that underwent therapeutic kinesio taping, placebo group that underwent placebo kinesio taping (shoulder and scapular region taping for taping groups), and control group (no taping).Main Outcome Measures:Shoulder rotation motions, PST, and head and shoulder posture were evaluated at baseline, immediately after application and 60 to 72 hours after application for all groups.Results:Glenohumeral internal rotation increased immediately (P < .001) and at 60 to 72 hours after application in the KTG (P = .01), whereas it decreased immediately after application in the RTG (P < .001). Immediately after application, total rotation range of motion increased in the KTG (P =.02) and decreased in the RTG (P < .001), and there was a difference between groups (P = .02). Immediately after application, PST increased in the RTG (P < .001); after 60 to 72 hours, it decreased in the KTG (P = .04) and increased in the RTG (P = .01). Posture outcomes did not change significantly (P > .05).Conclusions:Kinesio taping may improve and rigid taping may worsen glenohumeral internal rotation and PST in overhead athletes. For increasing total rotation range of motion, kinesio taping is superior to rigid taping. Taping did not affect posture. Short-term kinesio taping in overhead athletes may be useful to improve glenohumeral internal rotation, total rotation range of motion, and PST.

Kinesio Taping Improves Perceptions of Pain and Function of Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis: A Randomized, Controlled Trial

Context: Although increasingly used for therapeutic treatment, only limited evidence exists regarding the effects of kinesio taping on patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Objective: To determine the effects of kinesio taping on pain, function, gait, and neuromuscular control concerning patients with knee OA. Design: Randomized sham-controlled trial. Setting: University laboratory. Participants: A total of 141 patients (65.1 [7.0] y) with a clinical and radiographic diagnosis of knee OA. Intervention: Kinesio tape, sham tape, or no tape for 3 consecutive days. Main Outcome Measures: Self-reported pain, stiffness, and function were measured by the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). Further tests included the Balance Error Scoring System, 10-m walk test, the maximum voluntary isometric contraction force of the quadriceps femoris, and knee active range of motion. Results: At baseline, there were no differences in all outcomes between groups except for knee flexion. Significant effects were found for WOMAC pain (tape vs sham, P = .05; tape vs control, P = .047), stiffness (tape vs sham, P = .01; tape vs control, P ≤ .001), and physical function (tape vs sham, P = .03; tape vs control P = .004). No interactions were found for balance, muscle strength, walking speed, or active range of motion. Conclusion: Wearing kinesio tape for 3 consecutive days had beneficial effects regarding self-reported clinical outcomes of pain, joint stiffness, and function. This emphasizes that kinesio taping might be an adequate conservative treatment for the symptoms of knee OA.

Effects of kinesiotape on pain and disability in individuals with chronic low back pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

OBJECTIVE:

To explore the effects of kinesiotape on pain and disability in individuals with chronic low back pain.

DATA SOURCES:

PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched for English language publications from inception to 13 February 2018.

REVIEW METHODS:

This study was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42018089831). Our key search terms were ((kinesio taping) OR (kinesiotaping) OR (kinesiotape)) AND (low back pain). Randomized controlled trials evaluating the effects of kinesiotape published in English language were included in this review. The reference lists of retrieved studies and relevant reviews were also searched. Quality of the included trials was assessed according to 2015 updated Cochrane Back and Neck Review Group 13-Item criteria.

RESULTS:

A total of 10 articles were included in this meta-analysis. A total of 627 participants were involved, with 317 in the kinesiotape group and 310 in the control group. The effects of kinesiotape on pain and disability were explored. While kinesiotape was not superior to placebo taping in pain reduction, either alone ( P = 0.07) or in conjunction with physical therapy ( P = 0.08), it could significantly improve disability when compared to the placebo taping ( P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION:

Since kinesiotape is convenient for application, it could be used for individuals with chronic low back pain in some cases, especially when the patients could not get other physical therapy.

The Effect of Kinesiology Taping on the Hemiplegic Shoulder Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Objective

The purpose of the study was to explore the effect of kinesiology taping on hemiplegic shoulder pain (HSP) in terms of pain intensity, magnitude of subluxation, muscle activity, and active range of motion (AROM).

Design

Double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

Setting

the Rehabilitation Center of the West China Hospital.

Participants

Nineteen individuals suffering from HSP were recruited in this study.

Intervention

Patients were randomly assigned into the taping group or control group. The taping group received therapeutic kinesiology taping and conventional treatment, while the control group received placebo taping (applied without tension) and conventional treatment.

Main Outcome Measures

The shoulder pain intensity (numerical pain rating scale), magnitude of subluxation, muscle activity (measured by surface electromyography (sEMG)), and shoulder active range of movement (AROM) were assessed at the baseline, on the first day (immediately after taping) and 4 weeks after treatment (without taping).

Results

All patients completed the trials. There were no significant differences between groups at the baseline. The taping group showed immediate improvement on the first day after taping in terms of pain intensity, magnitude of subluxation, and muscle activity (p < 0.05), whereas no significant changes seen in the control group (p > 0.05). After 4 weeks of treatment, the taping group showed significant changes in pain intensity, magnitude of subluxation, muscle activity, and AROM (p < 0.05). And significant differences in pain intensity and muscle activity could be seen between the two groups (p < 0.05).

Conclusion

The results indicate that the kinesiology taping is effective in reducing the shoulder pain and subluxation and increasing muscle activity and AROM for patients with HSP after stroke.

Effects of kinesiology taping on shoulder girdle muscle activity and sports performance during badminton forehand overhead strokes in amateur badminton players with shoulder impingement syndrome

BACKGROUND

This study aimed to examine the influence of kinesiology taping (KT), various overhead stroke techniques, and their interactions on shoulder girdle muscle activity and on sports performance in badminton players with shoulder impingement syndrome.

METHODS

Twenty-five amateur badminton players with shoulder impingement syndrome participated in the study. Each was exposed to two KT conditions (no taping and taping) while performing four badminton strokes (defensive clear, attacking clear, smash, and drop shot) in a random order. Surface electromyography (EMG) was used to evaluate the activity of the pectoralis major, anterior deltoid, infraspinatus, and latissimus dorsi muscles. The EMG data are expressed as a percentage of the EMG amplitude recorded during a maximal voluntary isometric contraction of the respective muscles. The shuttlecock speed was also measured via video analysis.

RESULTS

The pectoralis major, anterior deltoid, infraspinatus, and latissimus dorsi EMG amplitudes were greatest during smashes (P<0.05), followed in general by attacking clearances (P<0.05) and defensive clearances (P<0.05). Drop shots induced the lowest EMG amplitudes in the shoulder girdle muscles (P<0.05). No significant main effect of the KT condition or KT-badminton stroke interaction effects were found (P>0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

The use of KT conferred no immediate benefits in improving shoulder girdle muscle activity or sports performance in amateur badminton players with shoulder impingement syndrome. Shoulder girdle muscle activity and sports performance were primarily influenced by the badminton overhead stroke techniques.

Effects of Kinesiology Taping on Scapular Reposition Accuracy, Kinematics, and Muscle Activity in Athletes With Shoulder Impingement Syndrome: A Randomized Controlled Study

CONTEXT

Scapular proprioception is a key concern in managing shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS). However, no study has examined the effect of elastic taping on scapular proprioception performance.

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the immediate effect of kinesiology taping (KT) on scapular reposition accuracy, kinematics, and muscle activation in individuals with SIS.

DESIGN

Randomized controlled study.

SETTING

Musculoskeletal laboratory, National Yang-Ming University, Taiwan.

PARTICIPANTS

Thirty overhead athletes with SIS.

INTERVENTIONS

KT or placebo taping over the upper and lower trapezius muscles.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

The primary outcome measures were scapular joint position sense, measured as the reposition errors, in the direction of scapular elevation and protraction. The secondary outcomes were scapular kinematics and muscle activity of the upper trapezius, lower trapezius, and serratus anterior during arm elevation in the scapular plane (scaption).

RESULTS

Compared with placebo taping, KT significantly decreased the reposition errors of upward/downward rotation (P = .04) and anterior/posterior tilt (P = .04) during scapular protraction. KT also improved scapular kinematics (significant group by taping effect for posterior tilt, P = .03) during scaption. Kinesiology and placebo tapings had a similar effect on upper trapezius muscle activation (significant taping effect, P = .003) during scaption.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study identified the positive effects of KT on scapular joint position sense and movement control. Future studies with a longer period of follow-up and clinical measurement might help to clarify the clinical effect and mechanisms of elastic taping in individuals with SIS.

Immediate and short-term effects of kinesiotaping on muscular activity, mobility, strength and pain after rotator cuff surgery: a crossover clinical trial

BACKGROUND

Kinesiotape (KT) is widely used in musculoskeletal rehabilitation as an adjuvant to treatment, but minimal evidence supports its use. The aim of this study is to determine the immediate and short-term effects of shoulder KT on muscular activity, mobility, strength and pain after rotator cuff surgery.

METHODS

Thirty-nine subjects who underwent shoulder rotator cuff surgery were tested 6 and 12 weeks post-surgery, without tape, with KT and with a sham tape (ST). KT and ST were applied in a randomized order. For each condition, the muscular activity of the upper trapezius, three parts of the deltoid and the infraspinatus were measured during shoulder flexion, and range of motion (ROM) and pain intensity were assessed. At 12 weeks, the isometric strength at 90° of shoulder flexion, related muscular activity and pain intensity were also measured. Subjects maintained the last tape that was applied for three days and recorded the pain intensity at waking up and during the day.

RESULTS

Modifications in muscle activity were observed with KT and with ST. Major changes in terms of decreased recruitment of the upper trapezius were observed with KT (P < 0.001). KT and ST also increased flexion ROM at 6 weeks (P = 0.004), but the differences with the no tape condition were insufficient to be clinically important. No other differences between conditions were found.

CONCLUSIONS

Shoulder taping has the potential to decrease over-activity of the upper trapezius, but no clinical benefits of KT on ROM, strength or pain were noted in a population of subjects who underwent rotator cuff surgery.

Can upper limb taping or exercises improve hand function, writing speed and self-perception of performance in adolescent school children?

BACKGROUND

The majority of students spend time in writing, which is a prime performance measure in examinations. Enhancement in handwriting should benefit students to attain better academic performance.

OBJECTIVE

To assess the effectiveness of taping and exercises on hand function, writing speed, self-perception of writing and to compare these techniques.

METHODS

A randomized control trial was conducted using cluster sampling in adolescent children across four schools in an urban city. A 4-week intervention study was conducted on 123 students divided into taping, exercise and control groups. Outcome measures were grip strength, pinch strength, 12-min writing speed test and the Writer Self-Perception Scale (WSPS). For intra-group analysis, a paired t-test was used for parametric values and the Wilcoxon signed rank test was used for non-parametric values. For inter-group analysis, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for parametric values and the Kruskal-Wallis test for non-parametric values was used.

RESULTS

The taping group showed a significant improvement in grip strength (1.79 kg; p = 0.00), pinch strength [1.67 lb (757.4 g); p = 0.00] and writing speed (39.77 words/12 min; p = 0.00). The exercise group showed significant improvement in grip strength (2.09 kg; p = 0.00), pinch strength (1.28 lb; p = 0.00), writing speed (28.38 words/12 min; p = 0.00). In the control group, there was a significant increase in pinch strength (1.023 lb; p = 0.01) and writing speed (12.94 words/12 min; p = 0.02). Inter-group analysis showed significant difference in writing speed (p = 0.002) and grip strength (p = 0.00). There was no significant difference in perception (p = 0.071).

CONCLUSION

Taping and exercise are equally effective for enhancement of hand function, writing speed and self-perception in adolescent school children.

Repositioning the scapula with taping following distal radius fracture: Kinematic analysis using 3-dimensional motion system

STUDY DESIGN

Cross-sectional and controlled laboratory study using pretest-posttest design.

INTRODUCTION

Patients with distal radius fracture (DRfx) report proximal segment problems. Taping is commonly recommended because it provides improved posture and function.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

This study aimed to investigate the 3-dimensional scapular kinematics and the effect of taping on the kinematics in participants with DRfx.

METHODS

Twenty participants with a unilateral history of DRfx and 20 healthy controls participated. Scapular kinematics was assessed using an electromagnetic system. Three separate strips of elastic taping were applied for participants with DRfx over the arm, scapula, and middle and lower trapezius muscles through the paravertebral muscles. Afterward, the scapular kinematics was reassessed in taped condition.

RESULTS

When participants with DRfx and healthy controls compared, the scapula was more downwardly rotated at 120° of humerothoracic elevation (mean difference [MD], 9.06°) and at 120° (MD, 9.04°), 90° (MD, 5.6°) of humerothoracic lowering, more upwardly rotated at 30° of humerothoracic lowering (MD, 5.1°). Taping showed a significant effect on kinematics; specifically, the scapula was more externally rotated (38.9° untaped vs 31.1° taped) and posteriorly tilted (-9.2° untaped vs -4.8° taped) during humerothoracic elevation and lowering for participants with DRfx.

DISCUSSION

Participants with DRfx showed different scapular kinematics and taping resulted in changes on tested kinematic parameters during humeral movements. Differences in scapular motion during elevation with taping showed a specific pattern.

CONCLUSIONS

Overall, taping maintained a position likely to produce optimal rotator cuff function during early rehabilitation of patients with DRfx.

Short- and medium-term effect of kinesio taping or electrical stimulation in hemiplegic shoulder pain prevention: A randomized controlled pilot trial

OBJECTIVE

To compare the short and medium-term effectiveness of combining Kinesio Tape (KT) or neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) with a conventional approach to prevent shoulder pain after stroke.

METHODS

Thirty-one first-time stroke survivors (58.06% females) were recruited and randomly assigned to one group; Control (n = 10), KT (n = 11), or NMES (n = 10). Ten of all participants were lost during follow-up because of death or a second stroke. The control group underwent conventional treatment (careful shoulder handling and daily mobilizations). This approach was combined with KT or NMES over deltoid muscles in the KT and NMES groups respectively. Measurements were taken at baseline, and at weeks 1, 2, 3, 4, 12, and 24 post-stroke. Data collected included self-perceived shoulder pain (Visual Analogue Scale), disability (Barthel Index and Berg scale), and upper limb function (Action Research Arm test).

RESULTS

In all groups, shoulder pain did not appear during the first month (p < 0.001), but increased afterwards. In the between-groups analysis, all groups similarly improved disability and function, and no significant differences were observed for any measure (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The combination of KT or NMES with conventional treatment is no superior to conventional treatment alone to prevent hemiplegic shoulder pain.

Shoulder Taping and Neuromuscular Control

CONTEXT

  Scapular taping can offer clinical benefit to some patients with shoulder pain; however, the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Understanding these mechanisms may guide the development of treatment strategies for managing neuromusculoskeletal shoulder conditions.

OBJECTIVE

  To examine the mechanisms underpinning the benefits of scapular taping.

DESIGN

  Descriptive laboratory study.

SETTING

  University laboratory.

PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS

  A total of 15 individuals (8 men, 7 women; age = 31.0 ± 12.4 years, height = 170.9 ± 7.6 cm, mass = 73.8 ± 14.4 kg) with no history of shoulder pain.

INTERVENTION(S)

  Scapular taping.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S)

  Surface electromyography (EMG) was used to assess the (1) magnitude and onset of contraction of the upper trapezius (UT), lower trapezius (LT), and serratus anterior relative to the contraction of the middle deltoid during active shoulder flexion and abduction and (2) corticomotor excitability (amplitude of motor-evoked potentials from transcranial magnetic stimulation) of these muscles at rest and during isometric abduction. Active shoulder-flexion and shoulder-abduction range of motion were also evaluated. All outcomes were measured before taping, immediately after taping, 24 hours after taping with the original tape on, and 24 hours after taping with the tape removed.

RESULTS

  Onset of contractions occurred earlier immediately after taping than before taping during abduction for the UT (34.18 ± 118.91 milliseconds and 93.95 ± 106.33 milliseconds, respectively, after middle deltoid contraction; P = .02) and during flexion for the LT (110.02 ± 109.83 milliseconds and 5.94 ± 92.35 milliseconds, respectively, before middle deltoid contraction; P = .06). These changes were not maintained 24 hours after taping. Mean motor-evoked potential onset of the middle deltoid was earlier at 24 hours after taping (tape on = 7.20 ± 4.33 milliseconds) than before taping (8.71 ± 5.24 milliseconds, P = .008). We observed no differences in peak root mean square EMG activity or corticomotor excitability of the scapular muscles among any time frames.

CONCLUSIONS

  Scapular taping was associated with the earlier onset of UT and LT contractions during shoulder abduction and flexion, respectively. Altered corticomotor excitability did not underpin earlier EMG onsets of activity after taping in this sample. Our findings suggested that the optimal time to engage in rehabilitative exercises to facilitate onset of trapezius contractions during shoulder movements may be immediately after tape application.

The influence of below-knee compression garments on knee-joint proprioception

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of the study was to assess the influence of below-knee compression garments on proprioception accuracy under, information processing constraints designed to cause high or low conscious attention to the task.

METHODS

In a counterbalanced, single-blinded, crossover trial, 44 healthy participants (26 male/18 female) with a mean age of 22.7±6.9 years performed an active joint repositioning task using their nondominant and their dominant leg, with and without below-knee compression and with and without conducting a secondary task.

RESULTS

Analysis of variance revealed no main effect of leg dominance and no interactions (p's>0.05). However, a main effect was evident for both compression (F_{1, 43}=84.23, p<0.001, ηp²=0.665) and secondary task (F_{1, 43}=4.391, p=0.04, ηp²=0.093).

CONCLUSIONS

The study is the first to evaluate the effects of a belowknee compression garment on knee proprioception under differential information processing constraints. We conclude that proprioception accuracy of the knee joint is significantly enhanced post application of below-knee compression garments and when a secondary task is conducted concurrently with active joint repositioning. The findings suggest that below-knee compression garments may improve proprioception of the knee, regardless of leg dominance, and that secondary tasks that direct attention away from proprioceptive judgments may also improve proprioception, regardless of the presence of compression. Clinical implications are discussed with respect to proprioception in modern.sports and rehabilitation settings.

Is Kinesio Taping to Generate Skin Convolutions Effective for Increasing Local Blood Circulation?

BACKGROUND It is unclear whether traditional application of Kinesio taping, which produces wrinkles in the skin, is effective for improving blood circulation. This study investigated local skin temperature changes after the application of an elastic therapeutic tape using convolution and non-convolution taping methods (CTM/NCTM). MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-eight pain-free men underwent CTM and NCTM randomly applied to the right and left sides of the lower back. Using infrared thermography, skin temperature was measured before, immediately after application, 5 min later, 15 min later, and after the removal of the tape. RESULTS Both CTM and NCTM showed a slight, but significant, decrease in skin temperature for up to 5 min. The skin temperature at 15 min and after the removal of the tape was not significantly different from the initial temperature for CTM and NCTM. There were also no significant differences in the skin temperatures between CTM and NCTM. CONCLUSIONS Our findings do not support a therapeutic effect of wrinkling the skin with elastic tape application as a technique to increase local blood flow.

Kinesio taping influences the mechanical behaviour of the skin of the low back: A possible pathway for functionally relevant effects

Despite claims of functional benefits of kinesio tape application, little mechanistic evidence exists to support physiological pathways to achieve these benefits. As kinesio tape is adhered directly to the skin, it can be supposed that any pathway needs to first achieve effects at this level. To address this, two layers of the skin, the combined epidermis and dermis, as well as the hypodermis were studied. Specifically, -kinematic measures of skin surface stretch and retraction, as well as ultrasound measures of skin thickness, were made along all edges of kinesio tape applied over the low back. Results demonstrated that the more superficial skin layer (combined epidermis and dermis), but not the deeper hypodermis, was significantly stretched (p = .0001) and thinner (p = .0016) at either end of the tape, and significantly retracted (p < .0001) and thicker (p = .0001) along the lateral edges of the tape. These results were partly dependent upon spine posture; skin retraction along the tape edges was only apparent in neutral and flexed (but not extended) spine postures, while skin thinning at the tape ends was only apparent in neutral and extended (but not flexed) spine postures. Hypodermal thickness was not affected by kinesio tape application at any location or in any posture. In summary, measured deformations at the skin surface and within the epidermal and dermal regions provide plausible pathways through which kinesio tape could achieve its claimed benefits.

Effects of kinesiotaping added to a rehabilitation programme for patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy: protocol for a single-blind, randomised controlled trial addressing symptoms, functional limitations and underlying deficits

INTRODUCTION

Rotator cuff tendinopathy (RCTe) is the most frequent cause of shoulder pain, resulting in considerable losses to society and public resources. Muscle imbalance and inadequate sensorimotor control are deficits often associated with RCTe. Kinesiotaping (KT) is widely used by clinicians for rehabilitation of RCTe. While previous studies have examined the immediate effects of KT on shoulder injuries or the effects of KT as an isolated method of treatment, no published study has addressed its mid-term and long-term effects when combined with a rehabilitation programme for patients with RCTe. The primary objective of this randomised controlled trial (RCT) will be to assess the efficacy of therapeutic KT, added to a rehabilitation programme, in reducing pain and disabilities in individuals with RCTe. Secondary objectives will look at the effects of KT on the underlying factors involved in shoulder control, such as muscular activity, acromiohumeral distance (AHD) and range of motion (ROM).

METHODS AND ANALYSIS

A single-blind RCT will be conducted. Fifty-two participants, randomly allocated to one of two groups (KT or no-KT), will take part in a 6-week rehabilitation programme. The KT group will receive KT added to the rehabilitation programme, whereas the no-KT group will receive only the rehabilitation programme. Measurements will be taken at baseline, week 3, week 6, week 12 and 6 months. Primary outcomes will be symptoms and functional limitations assessed by the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire. Secondary outcomes will include shoulder ROM, AHD at rest and at 60° of abduction, and muscle activation during arm elevation. The added effects of KT will be assessed through a two-way analysis of variance for repeated measures.

ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION

Ethics approval was obtained from the Ethics Committee of Quebec Rehabilitation Institute of the Centre Integrated University Health and Social Services. Results will be disseminated through international publications in peer-reviewed journals, in addition to international conference presentations.
