Calcium Phosphate Cements as Carriers of Functional Substances for the Treatment of Bone Tissue

Interest in calcium phosphate cements as materials for the restoration and treatment of bone tissue defects is still high. Despite commercialization and use in the clinic, the calcium phosphate cements have great potential for development. Existing approaches to the production of calcium phosphate cements as drugs are analyzed. A description of the pathogenesis of the main diseases of bone tissue (trauma, osteomyelitis, osteoporosis and tumor) and effective common treatment strategies are presented in the review. An analysis of the modern understanding of the complex action of the cement matrix and the additives and drugs distributed in it in relation to the successful treatment of bone defects is given. The mechanisms of biological action of functional substances determine the effectiveness of use in certain clinical cases. An important direction of using calcium phosphate cements as a carrier of functional substances is the volumetric incorporation of anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antiresorptive and osteogenic functional substances. The main functionalization requirement for carrier materials is prolonged elution. Various release factors related to the matrix, functional substances and elution conditions are considered in the work. It is shown that cements are a complex system. Changing one of the many initial parameters in a wide range changes the final characteristics of the matrix and, accordingly, the kinetics. The main approaches to the effective functionalization of calcium phosphate cements are considered in the review.

Significant Published Articles in 2021 for Pharmacy Nutrition Support Practice

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to assist the pharmacist engaged in nutrition support therapy in staying current with pertinent literature. Methods: Several clinical pharmacists engaged in nutrition support therapy compiled a list of articles published in 2021 considered important to their clinical practice. The citation list was compiled into a single spreadsheet where the author participants were asked to assess whether the article was considered important to nutrition support pharmacy practice. A culled list of publications was then identified whereby at least 5 out of the 8 author participants considered the paper to be important. Guideline and consensus papers from professional organizations, important to practice but not ranked, were also included. Results: A total of 211 articles were identified; 8 from the primary literature were voted by the group to be of high importance. An additional 18 guidelines, position, recommendation, or consensus papers were also identified. The top-ranked articles from the primary literature were summarized and a narrative regarding its implications to pharmacy nutrition support practice were provided. Conclusion: We recommend that pharmacists engaged in nutrition support therapy be familiar with these articles as it pertains to their practice.

Physical properties, chemical composition, and nutritional evaluation of common salad dressings

Salad dressings (SDs), a subcategory of flavored sauces with more than 20% fat content and less than 30% moisture content, is favored by consumers due to its delicacy. The physical properties, chemical composition and nutritional evaluation of common SDs on the Chinese market needs to be systematically investigated. This study compared the quality (physical properties, proximate composition, amino acids, fatty acids, and minerals) of six commercially available sweet SDs (SD1, SD2, SD3, SD4, SD5, and SD6) from the Chinese market. The results indicated that the water activity of six SDs was less than 0.60 (0.35-0.41), the moisture content was less than 65% (24.0-60.0%), and the crude fat content was between 23.25 and 64.15%. The essential amino acid index (EAAI) of SD3, SD1, SD2, and SD4 was greater than the FAO/WHO standard (EAAI = 75). Numerous fatty acids were detected, mainly linoleic and oleic acids; n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids were ranged from 1,090 mg/100 g to 2,520 mg/100 g. In addition, SDs were rich in minerals such as Mg, Ca, and Fe and the atherogenic index and thrombogenic index were 0.03-0.09 and 0.77-0.91, respectively. In summary, this work helps to provide key nutritional information on the composition of common SDs. The availability of this data may help purchasers with different nutritional needs to make informed choices about the use of SD and encourage more moderate consumption of pre-packaged sauces.

Effect of calcium and magnesium on inflammatory cytokines in accidentally multiple fracture adults: A short-term follow-up

Calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg), which play an important role in several cellular processes, is essential for normal development of the skeleton and maintenance of tissue homeostasis. Deficiency of these elements might delay bone fracture recovery or accelerates bone loss. We aimed to examine whether supplementation of trace element (TE) promotes fracture healing in accidentally fracturing adults by involvement of inflammatory mechanism.A short-term follow-up in clinic was performed. Totally, 117 subjects diagnosed with multiple fractures by traffic accidents were recruited in this study. Serum Ca and Mg levels were measured by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrophotometry. Short-term changes such as serum C-reactive protein, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor alpha in normal treatment and TE supplement groups were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Student t test and the Spearman correlation were performed to analyze the data.Significantly negative correlations between Ca (r = 0.7032; P < .001) and Mg (r = 0.2719; P < .05) and injury severity score were observed. Serum Ca and Mg were significantly increased at Day 5, 7, and 9 following TE supplements. After treatment, serum C-reactive protein, IL-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor alpha were significantly reduced whereas cytokine levels of the TE supplement group were found to be lower than that of the normal treatment group after Day 3.These findings suggest that Ca and Mg levels are associated with the injury severity of multiple fractures, and the supplement could reduce the inflammation, which may be beneficial for the bone recovery and disease process.
