Abstract
The development of natural active packaging materials and coatings presents a promising alternative to petroleum-based packaging solutions. These materials are engineered by incorporating functional ingredients with preservative capabilities. Concurrently, research has highlighted the diverse physicochemical, functional, and health-promoting properties of protein-polyphenol, polysaccharide-polyphenol, and protein-polysaccharide-polyphenol conjugates within various food formulations. However, a critical gap exists regarding the exploration of these biopolymers as active packaging materials. In contrast to conventional approaches for developing active packaging materials, this review presents a novel perspective by focusing on biopolymer-polyphenol conjugates. In this work, we delve into the realm of active packaging materials and coatings constructed from these conjugates, highlighting their potential as multifunctional active components in food packaging and preservation. This review comprehensively investigates the physicochemical properties, functionalities, and health-promoting activities associated with biopolymer-polyphenol conjugates. Their emulsification, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities, coupled with enhancements in mechanical strength and permeability properties, contribute to their multifunctional nature. Furthermore, we explore the potential advantages and limitations of utilizing these conjugates in active packaging applications. Finally, the review concludes by proposing crucial research avenues for further exploration of biopolymer-polyphenol conjugates within the domain of active food packaging.

Abstract
Chitosan oligosaccharide (COS), which represent the positively charged basic amino oligosaccharide in nature, is the deacetylated and degraded products of chitin. COS has become the focus of intensive scientific investigation, with a growing body of practical and clinical studies highlighting its remarkable health-enhancing benefits. These effects encompass a wide range of properties, including antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor activities. With the rapid advancements in chemical modification technology for oligosaccharides, many COS derivatives have been synthesized and investigated. These newly developed derivatives possess more stable chemical structures, improved biological activities, and find applications across a broader spectrum of fields. Given the recent interest in the chemical modification of COS, this comprehensive review seeks to consolidate knowledge regarding the preparation methods for COS derivatives, alongside discussions on their structural characterization. Additionally, various biological activities of COS derivatives have been discussed in detail. Lastly, the potential applications of COS derivatives in biomedicine have been reviewed and presented.

Abstract
Chitosan, a natural polysaccharide from chitin, shows promise as a biomaterial for various biomedical applications due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, antibacterial activity, and ease of modification. This review overviews "chitosan scaffolds" use in diverse biomedical applications. It emphasizes chitosan's structural and biological properties and explores fabrication methods like gelation, electrospinning, and 3D printing, which influence scaffold architecture and mechanical properties. The review focuses on chitosan scaffolds in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, highlighting their role in bone, cartilage, skin, nerve, and vascular tissue regeneration, supporting cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. Investigations into incorporating bioactive compounds, growth factors, and nanoparticles for improved therapeutic effects are discussed. The review also examines chitosan scaffolds in drug delivery systems, leveraging their prolonged release capabilities and ability to encapsulate medicines for targeted and controlled drug delivery. Moreover, it explores chitosan's antibacterial activity and potential for wound healing and infection management in biomedical contexts. Lastly, the review discusses challenges and future objectives, emphasizing the need for improved scaffold design, mechanical qualities, and understanding of interactions with host tissues. In summary, chitosan scaffolds hold significant potential in various biological applications, and this review underscores their promising role in advancing biomedical science.

Abstract
Chitosan (CS), a bio-renewable natural material, has the potential to be utilized as a biopolymer for food packaging films (PFs)/coatings. However, its low solubility in dilute acid solutions and poor antioxidant and antimicrobial activities limit its application in PFs/coatings. To address these restrictions, chemical modification of CS has garnered increasing interest, with graft copolymerization being the most extensively used method. Phenolic acids (PAs) as natural small molecules are used as excellent candidates for CS grafting. This work focuses on the progress of CS grafted PA (CS-g-PA) based films, introducing the chemistry and methods of preparing CS-g-PA, particularly the effects of different PAs grafting on the properties of CS films. In addition, this work discusses the application of different CS-g-PA functionalized PFs/coatings for food preservation. It is concluded that the food preservation capability of CS-based films/coatings can be improved by modifying the properties of CS-based films through PA grafting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Catechins, a member of the flavonoids, exist widely in teas, and have health benefits. However, catechins have poor stability, which greatly limits their application. In order to improve the stability of catechins, different catechins including (-)-epicatechin (EC), (-)-epicatechin gallate (ECG), (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC) and (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) were conjugated onto dialdehyde starch by acid-mediated coupling method. The structure, stability and antioxidant activity of dialdehyde starch-catechin conjugates were determined. RESULTS Thin-layer chromatography and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, fluorescence, nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectra revealed that catechins were successfully conjugated onto dialdehyde starch, coupling between 6-H/8-H of catechins' A ring and dialdehyde starch's aldehyde groups. The conjugates presented an amorphous structure and sheet-like and/or blocky morphologies. As compared to dialdehyde starch, the conjugates showed enhanced thermal stability. Furthermore, the stability of catechins in pH 7.4 phosphate-buffered saline was improved after conjugating onto dialdehyde starch. The conjugates exhibited significantly higher antioxidant activities than dialdehyde starch, decreasing in the following order: dialdehyde starch-ECG, dialdehyde starch-EGCG, dialdehyde starch-EC, dialdehyde starch-EGC and dialdehyde starch. CONCLUSION Dialdehyde starch-catechin conjugates have great potential as stable antioxidant agents. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
In this paper, two new flavonol derivatives, 2-(4-(dodecyloxy)phenyl)-3-hydroxyflavone (DHF) and 2-(3,5-bis(dodecyloxy)phenyl)-3-hydroxyflavone (BDHF), were synthesized to investigate the respective self-assembly behaviors at the liquid/solid interface by scanning tunneling microscopy. In addition, a linear pyridine derivative with acetylene groups called BisPy was added to regulate the assembly of DHF and BDHF, individually. However, only BDHF molecules successfully co-assembled into grid structures with BisPy molecules. Furthermore, the assembly and co-assembly behavior mechanism of flavonol derivatives and BisPy molecules were further studied by density functional theory calculations. This work will lay a foundation for investigating the self-assembly of flavonol derivatives and the co-assembly regulated by pyridine derivatives at the liquid-solid interface.
