Abstract
Fast liquid chromatography (LC) amino acid enantiomer separation of 6-aminoquinolyl-N-hydroxysuccinimidyl carbamate (AQC) derivatives using a chiral core-shell particle tandem column with weak anion exchange and zwitterionic-type quinine carbamate selectors in less than 3 min was achieved. Enantiomers of all AQC-derivatized proteinogenic amino acids and some isomeric ones (24 in total plus achiral glycine) were baseline separated (Rs > 1.5 except for glutamic acid with Rs = 1.3), while peaks of distinct amino acids and structural isomers (constitutional isomers and diastereomers of leucine and threonine) of the same configuration overlapped to various degrees. For this reason, drift tube ion mobility-mass spectrometry was added (i.e., LC-IM-MS) as an additional selectivity filter without extending run time. The IM separation dimension in combination with high-resolution demultiplexing enabled confirmation of threonine isomers (threonine, allo-threonine, homoserine), while leucine, isoleucine, and allo-isoleucine have almost identical collisional cross-section (DTCCSN2) values and added no selectivity to the partial LC separation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that IM separation of threonine isomers was possible due to conformational stabilization by hydrogen bond formation between the hydroxyl side chain and the urea group. Generally, the CCSN2 of protonated ions increased uniformly with addition of the AQC label, while outliers could be explained by consideration of intramolecular interactions and additional structural analysis. Preliminary validation of the enantioselective LC-IM-MS method for quantitative analysis showed compliance of accuracy and precision with common limits in bioanalytical methods, and applicability to a natural lipopeptide and a therapeutic synthetic peptide could be demonstrated.

Abstract
Enantioseparation of nineteen ß2-amino acids has been performed by liquid chromatography on chiral stationary phases based on native teicoplanin and teicoplanin aglycone covalently bonded to 2.7 µm superficially porous silica particles. Separations were carried out in unbuffered (water/methanol), buffered [aqueous triethylammonium acetate (TEAA)/methanol] reversed-phase (RP) mode, and in polar-ionic (TEAA containing acetonitrile/methanol) mobile phases. Effects of pH in the RP mode, acid and salt additives, as well as counter-ion concentrations on chromatographic parameters have been studied. The structure of selectands (ß2-amino acids possessing aliphatic or aromatic side chains) and selectors (native teicoplanin or teicoplanin aglycone) was found to have a considerable influence on separation performance. Analysis of van Deemter plots and determination of thermodynamic parameters were performed to further explore details of the separation performance.

Abstract
Carnosine is present in high concentrations in specific human tissues such as the skeletal muscle, and among its biological functions, the remarkable scavenging activity toward reactive carbonyl species is noteworthy. Although the two enantiomers show almost identical scavenging reactivity toward reactive carbonyl species, only d-carnosine is poorly adsorbed at the gastrointestinal level and is stable in human plasma. Direct methods for the enantioselective analysis of carnosine are still missing even though they could find more effective applications in the analysis of complex matrices. In the present study, the use of two different chiral stationary phases is presented. A chiral ligand-exchange chromatography stationary phase based on N,S-dioctyl-d-penicillamine resulted in the direct enantioseparation of carnosine. Indeed, running the analysis at 25°C and 1.0 mL/min with a 1.5 mM copper(II) sulfate concentration allowed us to obtain separation and resolution factors of 3.37 and 12.34, respectively. However, the use of a copper(II)-containing eluent renders it hardly compatible with mass spectrometry detectors. With the teicoplanin-based stationary phase, a mass spectrometry compatible method was successfully developed. Indeed, a water/methanol 60:40 v/v pH 3.1 eluent flowed at 1.0 mL/min and with a 25°C column temperature produced separation and resolution factors of 2.60 and 4.16, respectively.

Abstract
Polar-ionic and reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic separations of limonene-based cyclic β-amino acid enantiomers were carried out by using macrocyclic glycopeptide-based chiral selectors applying Chirobiotic T, TAG and R columns. The effects of additives, concentration of the co- and counter-ions and the temperature in polar-ionic mobile phase systems were studied. The influence of pH, MeOH content and alcohol additives were investigated in the reversed-phase mode. The difference in the change in standard enthalpy Δ(ΔH°), entropy Δ(ΔS°), and free energy Δ(ΔG°) was calculated from the linear van't Hoff plots derived from the ln α vs 1/T curves in the temperature range 5-40°C. Unusual temperature behavior was observed on Chirobiotic TAG for most of the analytes: decreased retention times were accompanied with increased separation factors with increasing temperature, and separation was entropically-driven. For two of the studied analytes enthalpically-driven enantioseparations were observed. The elution sequence was determined in all cases, but no general rule could be established.

Abstract
We present the specific cooperative effect of a semisynthetic glycopeptide antibiotic teicoplanin and chiral ionic liquids containing the (1R,2S,5R)-(-)-menthol moiety on the chiral recognition of enantiomers of mandelic acid, vanilmandelic acid, and phenyllactic acid. Experiments were performed chromatographically on an Astec Chirobiotic T chiral stationary phase applying the mobile phase with the addition of the chiral ionic liquids. The stereoselective binding of enantiomers to teicoplanin in presence of new chiral ionic liquids were evaluated applying thermodynamic measurements and the docking simulations. Both the experimental and theoretical methods revealed that the chiral recognition of enantiomers in the presence of new chiral ionic liquids was enthalpy driven. The changes of the teicoplanin conformation occurring upon binding of the chiral ionic liquids are responsible for the differences in the standard changes in Gibbs energy (ΔG0 ) values obtained for complexes formed by the R and S enantiomers and teicoplanin. Docking simulations revealed the steric adjustment between the chiral ionic liquids cyclohexane ring (chair conformation) and the β-d-glucosamine ring of teicoplanin and additionally hydrophobic interactions between the decanoic aliphatic chain of teicoplanin and the alkyl group of the tested salts. The obtained terpene derivatives can be considered as "structural task-specific ionic liquids" responsible for enhancing the chiral resolution in synergistic systems with two chiral selectors.

Abstract
A new chiral stationary phase (CSP) was developed by bonding isopropyl-carbamate functionalized cyclofructan6 (IP-CF6) to the silica gel. It was evaluated by injecting 119 racemic primary amine-containing compounds. This CSP showed pronounced enantioselectivity toward all types of primary amines, separating 93% of all tested compounds. Baseline separation was achieved even for some simple aliphatic racemic amines that contained no other functionality. The polar organic mode was shown to be the effective mobile phase owing to higher efficiency. This new chiral stationary phase showed great potential for preparative-scale separations. It is also interesting that the chiral selector, R-naphthylethyl-carbamate functionalized CF6 (RN-CF6), was found to provide complementary selectivity for the relatively few amine analytes that did not separate on IP-CF6. Thus between the two CSPs, 98% of attempted amine compounds were separated.
