A Nanozymatic-Mediated Smartphone Colorimetric Sensing Platform for the Detection of Dimethyl Phthalate (DMP) and Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP)

Plasticizers are a type of toxic substance that may remain in food, posing significant health risks including carcinogenic, teratogenic, mutagenic, and other adverse effects. In this study, a novel strategy was employed by combining Pt@Au nanozymes with high catalytic properties to created two catalytic signal probes, designated as Pt@Au@Ab1 and Pt@Au@Ab2, specifically designed for the detection of dimethyl phthalate (DMP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP). These catalytic signal probes served as the foundation for the development of a colorimetric immunoassay, enabling the simultaneous detection of both DMP and DBP. The colorimetric immunoassay is capable of detecting DMP in the range of 0.5-100 μg/L with a limit of detection as low as 0.1 μg/L and DBP in the range of 1-32 μg/L with a low limit of detection of 0.5 μg/L. The developed immunoassay can be used for the determination of the DMP and DBP in baijiu and plastic bottled drinks. The recovery rate is in the range of 96.4% and 100.5% and the coefficient of variation is between 1.0% and 7.2%. This innovative colorimetric immunoassay offers a robust tool for the simultaneous quantification of DMP and DBP in real samples.

Sample preparation for planar chromatography

High-performance thin-layer chromatography has favorable properties for high-throughput separations with a high matrix tolerance. Sample preparation, however, is sometimes required to control specific matrix interferences and to enhance the detectability of target compounds. Trends in contemporary applications have shifted from absorbance and fluorescence detection to methods employing bioassays and mass spectrometry. Traditional methods (shake-flask, heat at reflux, Soxhlet, and hydrodistillation) are being challenged by automated instrumental approaches (ultrasound-assisted and microwave-assisted solvent extraction, pressurized liquid extraction, and supercritical fluid extraction) and the quick, easy cheap, efficient, rugged, and safe extraction method for faster and streamlined sample processing. Liquid-liquid extraction remains the most widely used approach for sample clean-up with increasing competition from solid-phase extraction. On-layer sample, clean-up by planar solid-phase extraction is increasingly used for complex samples and in combination with heart-cut multimodal systems. The automated spray-on sample applicator, the elution head interface, biological detection of target and non-target compounds, and straightforward mass spectrometric detection are highlighted as the main factors directing current interest toward faster and simpler sample workflows, analysis of more complex samples, and the determination of minor contaminants requiring high concentration factors.

Analysis of plasticizers in poly(vinyl chloride) medical devices for infusion and artificial nutrition: comparison and optimization of the extraction procedures, a pre-migration test step

Medical devices (MDs) for infusion and enteral and parenteral nutrition are essentially made of plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The first step in assessing patient exposure to these plasticizers, as well as ensuring that the MDs are free from di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), consists of identifying and quantifying the plasticizers present and, consequently, determining which ones are likely to migrate into the patient's body. We compared three different extraction methods using 0.1 g of plasticized PVC: Soxhlet extraction in diethyl ether and ethyl acetate, polymer dissolution, and room temperature extraction in different solvents. It was found that simple room temperature chloroform extraction under optimized conditions (30 min, 50 mL) gave the best separation of plasticizers from the PVC matrix, with extraction yields ranging from 92 to 100% for all plasticizers. This result was confirmed by supplemented Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR) and gravimetric analyses. The technique was used on eight marketed medical devices and showed that they contained different amounts of plasticizers, ranging from 25 to 36% of the PVC weight. These yields, associated with the individual physicochemical properties of each plasticizer, highlight the need for further migration studies.

Biennial review of planar chromatography: 2011–2013

The most important advances in planar chromatography published between November 1, 2011 and November 1, 2013 are reviewed in this paper. Included are an introduction to the current status of the field; student experiments, books, and reviews; theory and fundamental studies; apparatus and techniques for sample preparation and TLC separations (sample application and plate development with the mobile phase); detection and identification of separated zones (chemical and biological detection, TLC/mass spectrometry, and TLC coupled with other spectrometric methods); techniques and instruments for quantitative analysis; preparative layer chromatography; and thin layer radiochromatography. Numerous applications to a great number of compound types and sample matrices are presented in all sections of the review.
