Preparation and characterization of macroporous monoliths imprinted with erythromycin

Preparation and Application of Molecularly Imprinted Monolithic Extraction Column for the Selective Microextraction of Multiple Macrolide Antibiotics from Animal Muscles

This study aimed to prepare a molecularly imprinted monolithic extraction column (MIMC) inside a micropipette tip by situ polymerization with roxithromycin as the dummy template. The polymers possessed excellent adsorption capacity and class-specificity to multiple macrolide drugs. MIMC was directly connected to a syringe for template removal and for the optimization of extraction conditions without any other post-treatment of polymers. A liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric method was developed for the selective microextraction and determination of macrolide antibiotics in animal muscles based on MIMC. High recoveries of 76.1–92.8% for six macrolides were obtained with relative standard deviations less than 10.4%. MIMC exhibited better retention ability and durability when compared with the traditional C18 and HLB cartridges. The proposed method shows a great potential for the analysis of macrolide drugs at the trace level in animal foodstuffs.

Cholesterol-imprinted macroporous monoliths: Preparation and characterization

The development of sorbents for selective binding of cholesterol, which is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, has a great importance for analytical science and medicine. In this work, two series of macroporous cholesterol-imprinted monolithic sorbents differing in the composition of functional monomers (methacrylic acid, butyl methacrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and ethylene dimethacrylate), amount of a template (4, 6 and 8 mol%) used for molecular imprinting, as well as mean pore size were synthesized by in situ free-radical process in stainless steel housing of 50 mm × 4.6 mm i.d. All prepared materials were characterized regarding to their hydrodynamic permeability and porous properties, as well as examined by BET and SEM methods. Imprinting factors, apparent dynamic dissociation constants, the maximum binding capacity, the number of theoretical plates and the height equivalent to a theoretical palate of MIP monoliths at different mobile phase flow rates were determined. The separation of a mixture of structural analogues, namely, cholesterol and prednisolone, was demonstrated. Additionally, the possibility of using the developed monoliths for cholesterol solid-phase extraction from simulated biological solution was shown.

Solid-phase extraction of explosive nitramines on macroreticular polymers modified by freezing with water or acetone

A novel approach is proposed to modify the porous structure and surface properties of the polymers used in solid-phase extraction. The approach involves soaking in water or acetone, followed by freezing in liquid nitrogen (77.4 K) and was employed for two polymeric materials: Amberlite XAD-7 and Amberlite XAD-16. Variations in the surface properties of the adsorbents were justified by the action of acetone and water as solvents affecting the textural and other characteristic of the materials. The initial and treated adsorbents were used in extraction of explosive nitramines from aqueous samples. The performed modifications of the polymer texture allow us to increase the recovery rate as compared with the initial adsorbents. The results were justified by the swelling of fragments of the polymers and by the additional process of sorption of nitramines. The results indicate that polymeric adsorbents can be easily modified by the soaking/freezing process and the materials can be achieved that prove usefulness for the effective separation of explosive nitramines from aqueous samples.
