Preparation of dummy-imprinted polymers by Pickering emulsion polymerization for the selective determination of seven bisphenols from sediment samples: Sample Preparation

Solvent-assisted dispersive micro-solid phase extraction of bisphenols using iron(III) thenoyltrifluoroacetonate complex (Fe(TTA)3) as a new nanostructured sorbent: a proof of concept

In this work, we describe for the first time the use of iron(III) thenoyltrifluoroacetonate complex (Fe(TTA)₃) as a novel sorbent for solvent-assisted dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (SA-dμSPE) of bisphenols from water samples. The extraction procedure is based on the formation of nanoparticles in situ following the rapid injection of a methanolic solution of Fe(TTA)₃ into the stirred aqueous sample. Herein, the synthesis of Fe(TTA)₃ and study of the essential parameters of the preparative procedure are described. The optimized procedure allowed for efficient enrichment of bisphenols from various water samples, chosen as model contaminants and matrix, within 2.5 min. The sorbent was collected by centrifugation, dissolved in methanol, and injected to perform HPLC with spectrophotometric detection. The limits of detection and quantification obtained ranged from 1.0-3.1 and 3.1-7.5 μg L^-1, respectively. Intraday and interday precisions of <7% relative standard deviation (RSD) and <8% RSD with analyte recoveries ranging between 70-117% (103.8% on average) were obtained for the analysis of river water, wastewater treatment plant effluent, and bottled water.

Controlled Synthesis of Polymethyl Methacrylate Latex Particles Armored by Fe3O4 via Pickering Emulsion Polymerization and Its Emulsifying Properties

The fabrication of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) latexes armored with modified Fe₃O₄ (IO) nanoparticles by Pickering emulsion polymerization was described. Dynamic light scattering analyzed the IO/PMMA latex particle size. Thermogravimetric analysis evaluated the incorporation efficiency (IE) of IO nanoparticles and the surface coverage (Cov) of latex particles. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed the IO nanoparticles loaded on the latex surface. Both the original and dialyzed IO nanoparticles were used as stabilizers to discuss the influence of electrolytes in IO solution on the process of emulsion polymerization. In order to effectively control the IE, Cov, hydrophobic properties, and magnetization of latex particles, the kinds of monomers, pH, and solid content of dialyzed IO on the polymerization process were investigated. In addition, the conversion of monomers, the size, and the number of latex particles were learned deeply so as to reveal the key mechanism of the PMMA polymerization process in the absence of electrolytes. Moreover, IO/PMMA latex particles showed good magnetic properties and emulsifying ability. In view of these results, a simple and efficient method for preparing magnetic hybrid materials by Pickering emulsion polymerization was proposed.

A new approach based on inversion of a partial least squares model searching for a preset analytical target profile. Application to the determination of five bisphenols by liquid chromatography with diode array detector

The paper shows a procedure for selecting the control method parameters (factors) to obtain a preset 'analytical target profile' when a liquid chromatographic technique is going to be carried out for the simultaneous determination of five bisphenols (bisphenol-A, bisphenol-S, bisphenol-F, bisphenol-Z and bisphenol-AF), some of them regulated by the European Union. The procedure has three steps. The first consists of building a D-optimal combined design (mixture-process design) for the control method parameters, which are the composition of the ternary mobile phase and its flow rate. The second step is to fit a PLS2 model to predict six analytical responses (namely, the resolution between each pair of consecutive peaks, and the initial and final chromatographic time) as a function of the control method parameters. The third final step is the inversion of the PLS2 model to obtain the conditions needed for attaining a preset analytical target profile. The computational inversion of the PLS2 prediction model looking for the Pareto front of these six responses provides a set of experimental conditions to conduct the chromatographic determination, specifically 22% of water, mixed with 58% methanol and 20% of acetonitrile, keeping the flow rate at 0.66 mL min^-1. These conditions give a chromatogram with retention times of 2.180, 2.452, 2.764, 3.249 and 3.775 min for BPS, BPF, BPA, BPAF and BPZ, respectively, and excellent resolution among all the chromatographic peaks. Finally, the analytical method is validated under the selected experimental conditions, in terms of trueness and precision. In addition, the detection capability for the five bisphenols were: 596, 334, 424, 458 and 1156 μg L^-1, with probabilities of false positive and of false negative equal to 0.05.

Recent advances and applications of molecularly imprinted polymers in solid-phase extraction for real sample analysis

Sample pretreatment is essential for the analysis of complicated real samples due to their complex matrices and low analyte concentrations. Among all sample pretreatment methods, solid-phase extraction is arguably the most frequently used one. However, the majority of available solid-phase extraction adsorbents suffer from limited selectivity. Molecularly imprinted polymers are a type of tailor-made artificial antibodies and receptors with specific recognition sites for target molecules. Using molecularly imprinted polymers instead of conventional adsorbents can greatly improve the selectivity of solid-phase extraction, and therefore molecularly imprinted polymer-based solid-phase extraction has been widely applied to separation, clean up and/or preconcentration of target analytes in various kinds of real samples. In this article, after a brief introduction, the recent developments and applications of molecularly imprinted polymer-based solid-phase extraction for determination of different analytes in complicated real samples during the 2015-2020 are reviewed systematically, including the solid-phase extraction modes, molecularly imprinted adsorbent types and their preparations, and the practical applications of solid-phase extraction to various real samples (environmental, food, biological, and pharmaceutical samples). Finally, the challenges and opportunities of using molecularly imprinted polymer-based solid-phase extraction for real sample analysis are discussed.

Preparation and characterization of molecularly imprinted polymers based on β-cyclodextrin-stabilized Pickering emulsion polymerization for selective recognition of erythromycin from river water and milk

Molecularly imprinted polymers were prepared via β-cyclodextrin-stabilized oil-in-water Pickering emulsion polymerization for selective recognition and adsorption of erythromycin. The synthesized molecularly imprinted polymers were spherical in shape, with diameters ranging from 20 to 40 µm. The molecularly imprinted polymers showed high adsorption capacity (87.08 mg/g) and adsorption isotherm data fitted well with Langmuir model. Adsorption kinetics study demonstrated that the molecularly imprinted polymers acted in a fast adsorption kinetic pattern and the adsorption features of molecularly imprinted polymers followed a pseudo-first-order model. Adsorption selectivity analysis revealed that molecularly imprinted polymers had a much better specificity for erythromycin than that for spiramycin or amoxicillin, and the relative selectivity coefficient values on the bases of spiramycin and amoxicillin were 3.97 and 3.86, respectively. The Molecularly imprinted polymers also showed a satisfactory reusability after four times of regeneration. In addition, molecularly imprinted polymers exhibited good adsorption capacities for erythromycin under complicated environment, that is, river water and milk. These results proved that the as-prepared molecularly imprinted polymers is a potent absorbent for selective recognition of erythromycin, and therefore it may be a promising candidate for practical applications, such as wastewater treatment and detection of erythromycin residues in food.

Highly ordered molecularly imprinted mesoporous silica for selective removal of bisphenol A from wastewater

Selective removal of bisphenol A from wastewater is quite challenging primarily because of its low concentration and matrix complexity. To this end, according to the molecular structure of bisphenol A, we designed a functional monomer for the preparation of molecularly imprinted mesoporous silica using click chemistry reaction. The resultant bisphenol A imprinted mesoporous silica was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, small angle X-ray diffraction, and N₂ adsorption-desorption experiments. The results indicated that the bisphenol A imprinted mesoporous silica possessed a highly ordered periodic hexagonal mesostructure with the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of 944.28 m² /g. The bisphenol A imprinted mesoporous silica showed fast adsorption kinetics and the saturated adsorption capacity reached up to 88.6 mg/g at pH 6.5, and with relative selectivity factors ranged from 1.06 to 3.20. The adsorption efficiency of the bisphenol A imprinted mesoporous silica was above 97.96% after five extraction/elution cycles. The bisphenol A imprinted mesoporous silica was further applied to the selective removal of bisphenol A from real wastewater samples and showed great promise in practical applications.

Preparation of Fluorescent Molecularly Imprinted Polymers via Pickering Emulsion Interfaces and the Application for Visual Sensing Analysis of Listeria Monocytogenes

In this work, a novel molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) with water-soluble CdTe quantum dots (QDs) was synthesized by oil-in-water Pickering emulsion polymerization using whole Listeria monocytogenes as the template. Listeria monocytogenes was first treated by acryloyl-functionalized chitosan with QDs to form a bacteria-chitosan network as the water phase. This was then stabilized in an oil-in-water emulsion comprising a cross-linker, monomer, and initiator, causing recognition sites on the surface of microspheres embedded with CdTe QDs. The resulting MIP microspheres enabled selective capture of the target bacteria via recognition cavities. The target bacteria Listeria monocytogenes was detected. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization showed that the MIPs had a rough spherical shape. There was visual fluorescence detection via quenching in the presence of the target molecule, which offered qualitative detection of Listeria monocytogenes in milk and pork samples. The developed method simplified the analysis process and did not require any sample pretreatment. In addition, the fluorescence sensor provided an effective, fast, and convenient method for Listeria monocytogenes detection in food samples.

A Phenolphthalein-Dummy Template Molecularly Imprinted Polymer for Highly Selective Extraction and Clean-Up of Bisphenol A in Complex Biological, Environmental and Food Samples

A molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) for highly selective solid-phase extraction (SPE) of bisphenol A (BPA) was prepared using phenolphthalein (PP) as the novel dummy template by bulk polymerization. A particle diameter distribution of 40⁻60 μm, a specific surface area of 359.8 m²·g-1, and a total pore volume of 0.730 cm³·g-1 for the prepared PP-imprinted polymer (PPMIP) were obtained. Good selectivity and specific adsorption capacity for BPA of the prepared PPMIP were also demonstrated by the chromatographic evaluation and sorption experiments. The PPMIP as a SPE sorbent was evaluated for the selective extraction and clean-up of BPA from complex biological, environmental, and food samples. Meanwhile, an accurate and sensitive analytical method based on the PPMIP-SPE purification procedure coupled with high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) detection has been successfully developed for the rapid determination of BPA from these samples, with detection limits of 1.3 ng·mL-1 for bovine serum and milk, 2.6 ng·mL-1 for human urine and edible oil, 5.2 ng·mL-1 for soybean sauce, and 1.3 ng·g-1 for sediment. The BPA recoveries at two different spiking levels were in the range of 82.1⁻106.9%, with relative standard deviation (RSD) values below 7.7%.

Newest applications of molecularly imprinted polymers for extraction of contaminants from environmental and food matrices: A review

This paper presents an overview of the recent applications of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) to sample preparation. The review is thought to cover analytical procedures for extraction of contaminants (mainly illegal/noxious organic compounds) from food and environmental matrices, with a particular focus on the various pre-concentration/cleanup techniques, that is offline and online solid-phase extraction (SPE), dispersive SPE (d-SPE), magnetic SPE (MSPE), solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and stir-bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), applied before instrumental quantification. The selectivity and extraction efficiency of MIP-based sorbent phases are critically discussed, also in relation to the physical-chemical properties resulting from the synthetic procedures. A variety of molecularly imprinted sorbents is presented, including hybrid composites embedding carbon nanomaterials and ionic liquids. The analytical performance of MIP materials in sample preparation is commented as function of the complexity of the matrix, and it is compared to that exhibited by (commercial) aspecific and/or immunosorbent phases.

Acetylene black paste electrode modified with molecularly imprinted polymers/graphene for the determination of bisphenol A

A novel nanocomposite of molecularly imprinted polymers and graphene sheets was fabricated and used to obtain a highly conductive acetylene black paste electrode with high conductivity for the detection of bisphenol A. The two-dimensional structure and the chemical functionality of graphene provide an excellent surface for the enhancement of the sensitivity of the electrochemical sensor and the specificity of molecularly imprinted polymers to improve detection of bisphenol A. The synergistic effect between graphene and molecularly imprinted polymers confers the nanocomposite with superior conductivity, broadened effective surface area and outstanding electrochemical performance. Factors affecting the performance of the imprinted sensor such as molecularly imprinted polymers concentration, foster time and scan rate are discussed. The sensor successfully detects bisphenol A with a wide linear range of 3.21 × 10^-10 to 2.8 × 10^-1 g/L (R = 0.995) and a detection limit of 9.63 × 10^-11 g/L. The fabricated sensor also possessed high selectivity and stability and exhibits potential for environmental detection of contaminants and food safety inspection.
