Stereoselective analysis of chiral pesticides: a review

Chiral organic pollutants, including pesticides, herbicides, medicines, flame retardants, and polycyclic musk, represent a significant threat to both the environment and human health. The presence of asymmetric centers in the structure of chiral pesticides introduces stereoisomers with distinct distributions, fates, biomagnification capacities, and cytotoxicities. In aquatic environments, pesticides, as persistent/pseudo-persistent compounds, have been detected in substantial quantities, posing severe risks to non-target species and, ultimately, public health through water supply and food exposures. In response to this environmental challenge, stereoselective analytical methods have gained prominence for the identification of pesticide/drug enantiomers in recent years. This review examines the environmental impact of chiral pesticides, emphasizing the distinct biological activities and distribution patterns of their stereoisomers. By highlighting the advancements in liquid chromatography for enantiomeric analysis, the review aims to underscore the urgent need for a comprehensive understanding of these pollutants to facilitate informed remediation strategies and ensure the safer dispersal of chiral organic pollutants in the environment, thereby addressing the potential risks they pose to ecosystems and human health. Future research should focus on developing sustainable and efficient methodologies for the precise analysis of stereoisomers in complex matrices, particularly in sewage water, emphasizing the importance of sewage processing plants in ensuring water quality.

Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis of the New Sulfone Bactericide 2-(4-Fluorophenyl)-5-(Methylsulfonyl)-1,3,4-Oxadiazole and Identification of Its Degradation Pathways in Paddy Water

Rapid and simple methods for the determination of Jiahuangxianjunzuo (JHXJZ) in paddy water, brown rice, soil and rice straw was developed and validated. This method involved the use of ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography equipped with photodiode array detector. The most important factor was chromatographic conditions, as identified through an orthogonal experimental design. This method showed good recoveries and precisions, thereby indicating its suitability for monitoring of JHXJZ residues in paddy water, brown rice, soil and rice straw. Furthermore, hydrolysis experiment was conducted in the laboratory under pH = 7 buffer solutions, and its degradation product was identified as 2-(4-fluorophenyl)-5-methoxy-1,3,4-oxadiazole by high-resolution mass spectrometry. JHXJZ has a major degradation pathway in the water which the OH- nucleophilic attack the C5 of 1,3,4-oxadiazole ring. Then it leaves mesyl to form intermediate 5-(4-fluorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-ol and the intermediate combined with methanol formed the degradation product 2-(4-fluorophenyl)-5-methoxy-1,3,4-oxadiazole by the loss of one H2O.The degradation pathways of JHXJZ under the present indoor simulation conditions were proposed.

Development and validation of an analytical method for multiresidue determination of pesticides in lettuce using QuEChERS-UHPLC-MS/MS

A new analytical method for multiresidue determination of 16 multiclass pesticides in lettuce was developed using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry with a triple quadrupole mass analyzer and positive mode electrospray ionization, using a previously optimized quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe method for sample preparation. Validation studies, according to document SANTE/11945/2015, demonstrated that the developed method is selective, accurate, and precise, providing recoveries of 70-120%, relative standard deviations ≤20% and quantification limits from 3 μg/kg. The method was compared with one based on high-performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry, in terms of chromatographic performance, detectability and matrix effect for five varieties of lettuce. The new method provided a reduction in the time for the chromatographic analysis of 50%, from 30 to 15 min, using a lower mobile phase flow rate (0.147 mL/min), which reduced the consumption of mobile phase by 25%, and injection of smaller amounts of sample (1.7 μL). Lower limits of quantification were obtained for almost all pesticides studied for green-leaf lettuce. However, in relation to the matrix effect, four of the five types of lettuce studied presented higher matrix effects.
