Magnetic solid-phase extraction of benzoylurea insecticides by Fe3 O4 nanoparticles decorated with a hyper-cross-linked porous organic polymer

A chitin-based magnetic hyper-cross-linked polymer for highly efficient enrichment of neonicotinoids in lemon juice and tomatoes

A chitin-based magnetic hyper-cross-linked polymer (labeled as Ch-MHCP) has been successfully synthesized and utilized for highly-effective solid-phase extraction of neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs). The extraction capability of Ch-MHCP for four common NEOs is higher than that of four commercial sorbents including octadecyl-silane C18, oasis hydrophilic/lipophilic balanced sorbent, oasis mixed anion sorbent and poly-phenylacetic mixed anion sorbent. The large number of hydroxyl and amide groups as well as benzene rings in Ch-MHCP allow the H-bond and π-π* interaction to be the principal adsorption mechanism of Ch-MHCP for NEOs. Besides, polar interaction was also involved in the adsorption process. In combination of Ch-MHCP based extraction technique with high-performance liquid chromatography, a novel analytical method for sensitive detection of NEOs in lemon juice and tomatoes has been established. At optimal conditions, wide linear ranges were obtained to be 0.20-100 ng mL-1 for lemon juice and 0.80-1000 ng g-1 for tomatoes. The detection limits were 0.06-0.12 ng mL-1 for lemon juice and 0.24-0.60 ng g-1 for tomatoes. This work not only provides a powerful tool for simultaneously detecting four NEOs in lemon juice and tomatoes, but also offers a new insight into the preparation of bio-based magnetic sorbents for adsorption/removal of pollutants.

Facile synthesis of amino-functionalized magnetic materials for efficient enrichment of anionic metabolites from biological samples

The analysis of biological samples is often affected by the background matrix. Proper sample preparation is a critical step in the analytical procedure for complex samples. In this study, a simple and efficient enrichment strategy based on Amino-functionalized Polymer-Magnetic MicroParticles (NH₂-PMMPs) with coral-like porous structures was developed to enable the detection of 320 anionic metabolites, providing detailed coverage of phosphorylation metabolism. Among them, 102 polar phosphate metabolites including nucleotides, cyclic nucleotides, sugar nucleotides, phosphate sugars, and phosphates, were enriched and identified from serum, tissues, and cells. Furthermore, the detection of 34 previously unknown polar phosphate metabolites in serum samples demonstrates the advantages of this efficient enrichment method for mass spectrometric analysis. The limit of detections (LODs) were between 0.02 and 4 nmol/L for most anionic metabolites and its high sensitivity enabled the detection of 36 polar anion metabolites from 10 cell equivalent samples. This study has provided a promising tool for the efficient enrichment and analysis of anionic metabolites in biological samples with high sensitivity and broad coverage, facilitating the knowledge of the phosphorylation processes of life.

Facile synthesis of magnetic hypercrosslinked polymer for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of benzoylurea insecticides from honey and apple juice samples

In this work, a novel knitting aromatic polymer (KAP) was fabricated for the first time by knitting ferrocene with 1,3,5-tris(bromomethyl)-2,4,6-trimethylbenzene via Friedel-Crafts reaction, and then the KAP was magnetically functionalized with Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles to produce a magnetic KAP (M-KAP). Combining M-KAP based magnetic solid-phase extraction with high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection, a simple and sensitive method was developed for simultaneous determination of six benzoylurea insecticides (BUs) in honey and apple juice samples. In the optimized conditions, a good linearity for the BUs existed in the range of 1.67-1000 ng g^-1 for honey sample and 0.500-100.0 ng mL^-1 for apple juice sample. The limits of detection were 0.500-1.50 ng g^-1 and 0.150-0.400 ng mL^-1 for honey and apple juice sample, respectively. Satisfactory recoveries were in the range of 85.5-105.5% with RSDs ≤ 8.3%. The developed method demonstrated an excellent practicability for sensitive analysis of the BUs.

Green synthesis of novel magnetic porous organic polymer for magnetic solid phase extraction of neonicotinoids in lemon juice and honey samples

Natural rutin with abundant hydroxyl groups was used as a green monomer to synthesize hydroxyl-functional magnetic porous organic polymer (named Rut-MOP) through environmentally-benign diazo-coupling reaction for the first time. The Rut-MOP displayed high extraction capability for neonicotinoid insecticides (thiamethoxam, imidacloprid, acetamiprid and thiacloprid). Thus, a Rut-MOP based magnetic solid-phase extraction method combined with high performance liquid chromatography was established for sensitive determination of neonicotinoid insecticides in lemon juice and honey samples. Under optimized conditions, the linear response of neonicotinoids was 0.1-100.0 ng mL^-1 for lemon juice and 8.0-1000.0 ng g^-1 for honey. The limits of detection (S/N = 3) were 0.03-0.04 ng mL^-1 and 2.5-3.0 ng g^-1 for lemon juice and honey, respectively. The method recoveries were 82-118% with the relative standard deviations of 1.9-7.6%. The results demonstrate that the Rut-MOP based method can be served as a good alternative for the sensitive analysis of neonicotinoid insecticides in lemon juice and honey.

Fabrication of a Magnetic Fluorinated Covalent Organic Framework for the Selective Capture of Benzoylurea Insecticide Residue in Beverages

Efficient capture of benzoylurea insecticide (BU) residue in food is a vital procedure for food safe monitoring. Herein, a core-shell structured magnetic fluorinated covalent organic framework with good magnetic responsiveness and abundant fluorine affinity sites was successfully synthesized, suitable for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of BUs. Using a room-temperature synthesis strategy, the magnetic fluorinated covalent organic framework was fabricated by in situ polymerization of 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl) triazine (TAPT) and 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoroterephthaldehyde (TFTA) on the surface of carboxylated Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles. The competitive adsorption experiment and molecular simulation verified that this magnetic fluorinated covalent organic framework possesses favorable adsorption affinity for BUs. This magnetic fluorinated covalent organic framework could be easily regenerated and reused at least eight times with no reduction of enrichment performance. Combining this magnetic fluorinated covalent organic framework-based MSPE with high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, a novel sensitive method for the analysis of BUs was developed. In yellow wine and fruit juice samples, good linear correlations were obtained for BUs in the range of 10-2000 and 20-4000 ng·L^-1, respectively. The limit of quantitation of the BUs ranged from 1.4 to 13.3 ng·L^-1 in the two beverage matrices. Desirable precision was achieved, with intraday and interday relative standard deviations lower than 11%.

Nanopesticides in Agriculture: Benefits and Challenge in Agricultural Productivity, Toxicological Risks to Human Health and Environment

Nanopesticides are nanostructures with two to three dimensions between 1 to 200 nm, used to carry agrochemical ingredients (AcI). Because of their unique properties, the loading of AcI into nanoparticles offers benefits when compared to free pesticides. However, with the fast development of new engineered nanoparticles for pests' control, a new type of environmental waste is being produced. This paper describes the nanopesticides sources, the harmful environmental and health effects arising from pesticide exposure. The potential ameliorative impact of nanoparticles on agricultural productivity and ecosystem challenges are extensively discussed. Strategies for controlled release and stimuli-responsive systems for slow, sustained, and targeted AcI and genetic material delivery are reported. Special attention to different nanoparticles source, the environmental behavior of nanopesticides in the crop setting, and the most recent advancements and nanopesticides representative research from experimental results are revised. This review also addresses some issues and concerns in developing, formulating and toxicity pesticide products for environmentally friendly and sustainable agriculture.

Magnetic Solid Phase Extraction Based on Nanostructured Magnetic Porous Porphyrin Organic Polymer for Simultaneous Extraction and Preconcentration of Neonicotinoid Insecticides From Surface Water

In this study, a magnetic porphyrin-based porous organic polymer (MP-POP) nanocomposite was successfully synthesized according previous studies and applied as an adsorbent for simultaneous extraction and preconcentration of four neonicotinoid insecticides from surface river water. The MP-POP was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), N₂-adsorption/desorption analysis, Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The neonicotinoid insecticides were quantified using high performance chromatography coupled with diode array detector (HPLC-DAD). The MP-POP shown to have a high surface area, highly porous structure and strong affinity toward the investigated analytes. The adsorption capacities were 99.0, 85.5, 90.0, and 79.4 mg g⁻¹ for acetamiprid, clothiandin, thiacloprid and imidacloprid, respectively. The influential parameters affecting the magmatic μ-solid phase extraction (M-μ-SPE) procedure were investigated using fractional factorial design and surface response methodology (RSM). Under optimum conditions, the method exhibited relatively low limit of detection in the range of 1.3–3.2 ng L⁻¹, limit of quantification in the range of 4.3–11 ng L⁻¹ and wide linearity (up to 600 μg L⁻¹). The intraday and interday precision, expressed as the relative standard deviation (RSD) were <5%. The percentage recoveries for the four target analytes ranged from 91 to 99.3% for the spiked river water samples. The method was applied for determination of neonicotinoids in river water samples and concentrations ranged from 0 to 190 ng L⁻¹.

Sulfur-Decorated Hyper-Cross-Linked Coal Tar: A Microporous Organic Polymer for Efficient and Expeditious Mercury Removal

Hyper-cross-linked microporous organic polymers are a class of porous materials that have captured widespread attention owing to their high surface areas and wide range of monomeric sources. Balancing economy with performance is the initial hurdle when designing effective hyper-cross-linked microporous organic polymers. Herein, we demonstrated an inexpensive sulfurated solvent-knitted hyper-cross-linked microporous polymer scaffold, named sulfur-decorated hyper-cross-linked coal tar (CTHP-SES), utilizing coal tar as an aromatic monomer with numerous positions for potential chelation of toxic metals, particularly mercury, from water. The resulting material illustrated selective adsorption of mercury from both water (1037 mg g^-1) and the gas phase (416 mg g^-1) with rapid kinetics (183.67 mg min^-1 g^-1), good recyclability (4 runs), and excellent stability under both strong basic and acidic conditions. CTHP-SES was able to reduce the concentration of the Hg(II) solution from 1 mg L^-1 to 32 μg L^-1 after 10 min due in part to the promising distribution coefficient (K_d = 2.371 × 10⁶ mL g^-1). These results show that CTHP-SES offers a promising and practical platform to cope with a variety of environmental contaminations.

Activated carbon/diatomite-based magnetic nanocomposites for magnetic solid-phase extraction of S-phenylmercapturic acid from human urine

In this study, activated carbon/diatomite-based magnetic nancomposites (denoted as AC/DBMNs) were synthesized and applied as an adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction of S-phenylmercapturic acid (S-PMA) from human urine prior to high-performance liquid chromatography. The surface morphologies and structures of AC/DBMNs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area, vibrating sample magnetometer and ζ-potential measurements. The experimental parameters including sample volume, sample pH, adsorbent amount, extraction time, elution solvent and desorption time were investigated in detail. Under the optimum conditions, the method exhibited good linearity (r > 0.9993) within the concentration ranges of 0.03-1.0 mg/L. Moreover, the limits of detection and quantification were 0.01 and 0.03 mg/L, respectively. The enrichment factor was 5, and good recoveries (88.9-97.3%) with relative standard deviations in the range of 5.6-6.8% (n = 6) for inter-day and 6.3-8.1% (n = 6) for intra-day were achieved. The developed method was successfully applied to the analysis of S-PMA in urine samples. In addition, this accurate and sensitive method has great potential to be applied in the early screening and clinical diagnosis of the workers exposed to benzene.

Determination of sialic acid in serum samples by dispersive solid-phase extraction based on boronate-affinity magnetic hollow molecularly imprinted polymer sorbent

Boronate-affinity magnetic hollow molecularly imprinted polymers (B-MhMIPs) were prepared with sialic acid (SA) as the template, 3-aminophenylboronic acid (APBA) as the functional monomer and glycidilmethacrylate (GMA) as the co-monomer to chemisorb Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Furthermore, the hollow structure made the nanoparticles have more binding sites at both internal and external surfaces, which can facilitate the removal of template molecules from polymers and enhance the adsorption abilities towards SA. After optimizing, the adsorption pH was controlled at 4.0, and this was different from most cis-diol-containing compounds. Under the optimal conditions, the limit of detection for SA was 0.025 μg mL-1 (n = 3). This method was applied to analyze serum samples with different spiked levels, and the recoveries of the SA were in the range of 70.9-106.2%. These results confirmed the superiority of the B-MhMIPs for selective and efficient enrichment of trace SA from complex matrices.

Synthesis of magnetic metal–organic framework composites, Fe3O4-NH2@MOF-235, for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of benzoylurea insecticides from honey, fruit juice and tap water samples
