Linear calibrations in chromatography: The incorrect use of ordinary least squares for determinations at low levels, and the need to redefine the limit of quantification with this regression model

Compatibility of cloud point extraction with gas chromatography: Matrix effects of Triton X-100 on GC-MS and GC-MS/MS analysis of organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides

Cloud point extraction is an environmentally benign and simple separation/concentration procedure that can be regarded as an alternative to classical liquid-liquid extraction. In the current work, it was studied the compatibility of cloud point extraction followed by back-extraction in low volume of organic solvent with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS and GC-MS/MS). Triton X-100 was preferred than Triton X-114 as a surfactant to produce the clouding phenomenon and hexane or isooctane was found to be appropriate organic solvents which can be used at the back-extraction step. It was observed that ca. 0.09 % w/w Triton X-100 was co-extracted in the organic phase (hexane or isooctane) so further study was carried out to find out its effect on the GC-MS (GC-MS/MS) measurement when liquid samples are injected without any pre-cleaning to remove the surfactant. The chromatographic separation and the mass detection were not deteriorated by the concomitant Triton X-100 for analysis of several Organochlorine and Organophosphorus pesticides (alpha-HCH, beta-HCH, gamma-HCH, Pentachlorobenzene, Hexachlorobenzene, Chlorpyrifos, Chlorpyrifos-methyl, Aldrin, Endrin, Dieldrin, alpha-Endosulfan, Heptachlor, Heptachlor-endo-epoxide-A, o,p-DDD, p,p-DDD, o,p-DDE, p,p-DDE, o,p-DDT and p,p-DDT). The stability of the GC system when introducing surfactant was assessed as acceptable (typically the peak area RSD% for 20 consecutive injections were below 5 %). Under the developed vaporization conditions using PTV or PSS injectors it can be deduced that Triton X-100 is deposited on the inner surface of the liner. This effect is beneficial since the resulting surfactant layer makes a surface which facilitates the pesticides transfer to the GC column. As a consequence, for some analytes, a substantial enhancement (up to 2.3 times) in the sensitivity was observed when the matrix-matched medium (0.09 % w/w Triton X-100 in organic solvent) is used compared to calibration in solely hexane or isooctane. Meanwhile, the measurement precision in the presence of Triton X-100 remains unchanged. The GC-MS/MS analysis was alternatively accomplished by the use of glass or metal liner and it was found that the glass one should be preferable. Finally, it can be concluded that cloud point extraction with Triton X-100 can be combined with GC-MS or GC-MS/MS analysis by applying liquid injection of the target analytes transferred in organic solvents such as hexane or isooctane. We have established a positive effect of Triton X-100 on the instrumental performance which is on opposite to the generally accepted concern of the negative influence of the surfactants on the gas chromatographic analysis.

An optimization strategy for charged aerosol detection to linearize the detector response in the multicomponent quantitative analysis of Qishen Yiqi dripping pills

Charged aerosol detection, increasingly recognized for quantifying pharmaceutical compounds with weak ultraviolet absorption, is a universal detection technique for high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Charged aerosol detection shows a non-linear response with increasing analyte concentration over a wide range, limiting its versatility in various analytical applications. In this work, a co-optimization strategy for power function value (PFV) and power laws was proposed and applied to broaden the linear range of the standard curve of saccharides in Qishen Yiqi dripping pills using the HPLC-charged aerosol detection (HPLC-CAD) method. Power function values for all analytes were optimized based on empirical models. Subsequently, the optimum power laws were investigated based on a preferred PFV. Additionally, various regression equations were evaluated to ensure the accuracy and precision of the results. With the optimized PFV and power law, the ordinary least squares model demonstrated a satisfactory fit. The optimal PFVs and power laws expanded the standard curve's linear range by 2.7 times compared to default settings, reducing model uncertainty. This paper presents a vital method for developing a multi-component quantitative HPLC-CAD approach without external data transformation outside the provided software, especially suitable for analytical applications of traditional Chinese medicine with significant quality differences.

Monosaccharide Analysis After One-Pot Derivatization Followed by Reverse-Phase Liquid Chromatography Separation and UV/Vis Detection

Derivatization of monosaccharides with 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone (PMP) introduces two chromophores per sugar molecule. Their separation on a superficially porous C18 reverse-phase column, using common liquid chromatography equipment, results in short analysis times (under 20 min) and high sensitivity (limit of quantitation 1 nmol). This method allows for complex monosaccharide mixtures to be separated and quantified using a reasonably simple and safe derivatization procedure.

Optimization of a ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography-tandem multiple reaction monitoring mass spectrometry method for monitoring haloacetic acids as chlorinated disinfection by-products in the fresh-cut industry

Haloacetic acids (HAAs) are one of the most important chlorinated disinfection by-products generated during water disinfection in the fresh-cut industry, and they can remain in the product, resulting in a consumer health risk. In this study, ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography-tandem multiple reaction monitoring mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MRM) analysis used for drinking water was optimized and applied for the quantification of nine HAAs (HAA9) in fresh-cut lettuce and process water samples, with the complex matrix interferences for separation, and quantification problems. The method showed good selectivity, specificity and linearity, satisfactory values for trueness (recoveries of 80-116 %), precision (<22 %), and uncertainty (<55 %). Quantification limits varied from 1 to 5 µg L-1 or µg kg-1. The matrix effect for tribromoacetic, bromochloroacetic and chlorodibromoacetic acid was corrected by matrix-matched calibration and standard addition. After storage at -20 °C, only monobromoacetic acid was the HAA which loss happened after 7 days. The application of the methodology in lettuce and process water samples from the industry was successfully implemented. Therefore, this method could be employed for the quality control and regulatory analysis of HAAs in fresh products and process water from the fruit and vegetable industry.

Chemical characterization and source attribution of organic pollutants in industrial wastewaters from a Chinese chemical industrial park

Accelerated urbanization and industrialization have led to an alarming increase in the generation of wastewater with complex chemical contents. Industrial wastewaters are often a primary source of water contamination. The chemical characterization of different industrial wastewater types is an essential task to interpret the chemical fingerprints of wastewater to identify pollution sources and develop efficient water treatment strategies. In this study, we conduct a non-target chemical analysis for the source characterization of different industrial wastewater samples collected from a chemical industrial park (CIP) located in southeast China. The chemical screening identified volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds that included dibutyl phthalate at a maximum concentration of 13.4 μg/L and phthalic anhydride at 35.9 μg/L. Persistent, mobile, and toxic (PMT) substances among the detected organic compounds were identified and prioritized as high-concern contaminants given their impact on drinking water resources. Moreover, a source analysis of the wastewater collected from the wastewater outlet station indicated that the dye production industry contributed the largest quantities of toxic contaminates (62.6%), and this result was consistent with the ordinary least squares and heatmap results. Thus, our study utilized a combined approach of a non-target chemical analysis, a pollution source identification method, and a PMT assessment of different industrial wastewater samples collected from the CIP. The results of the chemical fingerprints of different industrial wastewater types as well as the results of the PMT assessment benefit risk-based wastewater management and source reduction strategies.

New insight into fate and transport of organic compounds from pollution sources to aquatic environment using non-targeted screening: A wastewater treatment plant case study

A variety of chemicals discharged into the aquatic environment by the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), which is a potential source of hazard to the ecological environment and human health. This study established a novel analytical method for all compounds using non-targeted screening to comprehensively explore the fate and transport of organic compounds from WWTP to aquatic environment. 3967 and 3636 features were detected in WWTP samples and river samples, respectively. Multi-level classification was applied to all identified compounds, and results showed that aliphatics were dominant in both abundance and response, accounting for an average of 35.49 % and 74.10 %, respectively. A total of 88 Emerging Contaminants (ECs), including 22 endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), 12 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), 12 pesticides, 10 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), 5 persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and 27 chemicals with other uses, were identified from all compounds, and their traceability analysis was performed. Furthermore, the contribution rate of organic compounds from WWTP effluent to river was calculated to be 33.60 % by the analysis of source-sink relationship. An in-depth and comprehensive exploration of the fate and transport of all organic compounds will help to provide guidelines for the treatment technologies and achieve the traceability of pollutants.

The high-dimensional geographic dataset revealed significant differences in the migration ability of cadmium from various sources in paddy fields

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in paddy fields and its subsequent transfer in soil-rice systems are of particular concern. Significant discrepancies exist in the transfer process of Cd pollution sources from soil to rice. Here, we proposed a novel hybrid framework to reveal the priority of controlling Cd pollution sources in soil-rice systems, based on a high-dimensional geographical database. We further defined transfer potential (TP) to describe the ability of Cd from soil to rice (TP^r = Cd_r/Cd_s) and activated status (TP^a = Cd_a/Cd_s), respectively, to reveal the priority sources of Cd pollution at the regional scale. The mining source has both high levels of TP^r and TP^a, which should be a controlled priority. Followed by traffic sources with a higher value of TP^r, showing the risk to rice rather than the soil. The activated and enriched capacities of soil Cd are unequal in different sources that we attribute to the disparities of Cd transport in soil-rice systems. Cd contamination shows a significant spatial heterogeneity due to the difference in its transport performance. Our findings provide support for designing site-specific and pollution-targeted control priorities for suitable Cd pollution mitigation strategies at the regional scale.

The inadequate use of the determination coefficient in analytical calibrations: How other parameters can assess the goodness-of-fit more adequately

Simple linear regression using ordinary least-squares is the most common function applied in laboratories for analytical calibrations. The determination and/or the correlation coefficients are usually the parameters applied for assessing the goodness-of-fit of a simple linear calibration. However, these parameters are unable to detect the highly biased results at low calibration levels that are obtained with ordinary least-squares. In this study, the use of other parameters based on the relative standard errors of the calculated contents is evaluated. It has been found that these alternative parameters can detect the biased results obtained at low calibration levels with ordinary least-squares, being the relative standard error the one that seems to provide the most adequate results. Ordinary least-squares should only be applied if the lower limit of quantification is set to at least five times above the conventional limit of quantification. For trace analysis, where the lowest possible limit of quantification is required, weighted least-squares should be applied to obtain accurate estimates, especially at low concentrations. One of the greatest advantages of the relative standard error is that this parameter can be determined for all types of regression functions and is not limited to calibrations with linear relationships between the variables.

Spatiotemporal Evolution of Lakes under Rapid Urbanization: A Case Study in Wuhan, China

The impact of urbanization on lakes in the urban context has aroused continuous attention from the public. However, the long-term evolution of lakes in a certain megacity and the heterogeneity of the spatial relationship between related influencing factors and lake changes are rarely discussed. The evolution of 58 lakes in Wuhan, China from 1990 to 2019 was analyzed from three aspects of lake area, lake landscape, and lakefront ecology, respectively. The Multi-Scale Geographic Weighted Regression model (MGWR) was then used to analyze the impact of related influencing factors on lake area change. The investigation found that the total area of 58 lakes decreased by 15.3%. A worsening trend was found regarding lake landscape with the five landscape indexes of lakes dropping; in contrast, lakefront ecology saw a gradual recovery with variations in the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) in the lakefront area. The MGWR regression results showed that, on the whole, the increase in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), RSEI in the lakefront area, precipitation, and humidity contributed to lake restoration. The growth of population and the proportion of impervious surface (IS) in the lakefront area had different effects on different lakes. Specifically, the increase in GDP and population in all downtown districts and two suburb districts promoted lake restoration (e.g., Wu Lake), while the increase in population in Jiangxia led to lake loss. The growth of RSEI in lakefront area promoted the restoration of most lakes. A higher proportion of IS in lakefront area normally resulted in more lake loss. However, in some cases, the growth of IS was caused by lake conservation, which contributed to lake restoration (e.g., Tangxun Lake). The study reveals the spatiotemporal evolution of multiple lakes in Wuhan and provides a useful reference for the government to formulate differentiated protection policies.
