A novel 3D printed device with conductive elements for electromembrane extraction combined with HPLC and UV detector

Fabrication of a surface molecularly imprinted polymer membrane based on a single template and its application in the separation and extraction of phenytoin, phenobarbital and lamotrigine

An innovative molecularly imprinted polymer membrane (MIPM) was prepared with polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) as the support, phenytoin (PHT) as the single template, methacrylic acid as the functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linking reagent, azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator, and acetonitrile-dimethylformamide (1 : 1.5, v/v) as the porogen. These materials were characterized via scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurements and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Their adsorption performances were evaluated through a series of experiments including isothermal adsorption, kinetic adsorption, selective adsorption, adsorption-desorption, reusability, and preparation reproducibility. Additionally, the application was explored by investigating the extraction recovery of MIPMs towards PHT, phenobarbital (PHB) and lamotrigine (LTG) in different matrices including methanol, normal saline (NS), phosphate buffer solution (PBS) and plasma. The results showed that MIPMs with rough and porous surfaces were successfully constructed, which offered good preparation reproducibility, reusability and selectivity. The adsorption capacities of MIPMs towards PHT, PHB and LTG were 2.312, 2.485 and 2.303 mg g-1, respectively, while their corresponding imprinting factors were 8.538, 12.122 and 4.562, respectively. The adsorption equilibrium of MIPMs was achieved within 20 min at room temperature without stirring or ultrasonication. The extraction recoveries of MIPMs for PHT, PHB or LTG in methanol, NS and PBS were more than 80% with an RSD% value of less than 3.64. In the case of plasma, the extraction recovery of MIPMs for PHT and PHB was more than 80% with an RSD% value of less than 2.41, while that of MIPMs for LTG was more than 65% with an RSD% value of less than 0.99. All the results indicated that the preparation method for MIPMs was simple, stable, and reliable, and the prepared MIPMs possessed excellent properties to meet the extraction application of PHT, PHB and LTG in different matrices.

Optimization of generic conditions for electromembrane extraction of basic substances of moderate or low polarity

Generic electromembrane extraction (EME) methods were developed and optimized for basic analytes of moderate or low polarity, employing prototype conductive vial EME equipment. Two generic methods, B1 and B2, were devised for mono- and dibasic compounds with distinct polarity windows: 2.0 < log P < 6.0 for B1 and 1.0 < log P < 4.5 for B2. In B1, 10 μL of 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether served as the liquid membrane, while B2 utilized 10 μL of 2-undecanone. Both methods involved the acidification of 125 μL of human plasma samples with 125 μL of sample diluent (0.5 M HCOOH for B1 and 1.0 M HCOOH for B2). The acceptor phase consisted of 250 μL of 100 mM HCOOH. Extraction was conducted for 30 min with agitation at 800 rpm, employing an extraction potential of 100 V for B1 and 50 V for B2. A set of 90 pharmaceutical compounds was employed as model analytes. Both B1 and B2 demonstrated high recoveries (40%-100%) for the majority of model analytes within their respective polarity windows. Intra-day precision was within 2.2% and 9.7% relative standard deviation. Both extraction systems exhibited stability in terms of current, matrix effect values were between 90% and 109%.

High-quality 3D printing of ethylene vinyl acetate with direct pellet-based FDM for medical applications: Mechanical analysis, energy absorption and recovery evaluation

Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) is a biocompatible and non-toxic copolymer known for its applications in medicine, drug delivery systems, and energy absorption. This paper presents a novel method for 3D printing EVA using the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technique. By directly utilizing pellet-form EVA material and employing pneumatic pressure for extrusion, we addressed the issue of filament buckling commonly encountered in traditional filament-based printing. A custom-made pellet printer enabled direct feeding of polymer pellets. The mechanical properties, microstructure of the printed EVA parts was analyzed to evaluate the suitability of the direct pellet printing technique for producing high-quality EVA components. The results showed acceptable printing quality and favorable mechanical properties (about 1000% elongation at break and 6.59 MPa tensile strength). Additionally, a cyclic compression test was conducted, subjecting specimens to various strains (30%,80% and 120%) and assessing their compressive and energy absorption properties undergoing significant deformations. Observations reveal a noticeable decline in the mechanical properties after the first compression cycle. The mechanical properties tend to stabilize and reach a steady state from the second cycle onwards until the sixth cycle. Furthermore, a compression cyclic test with various strain rates conducted, investigated the functional performance of the printed EVA components in engineering and biomedical applications, considering the impact of strain rate. Observations indicate that lower strain rates tend to enhance the material's ability to withstand deformation before yielding. This study contributes to expanding the potential of EVA in additive manufacturing, particularly in biomedical and energy absorption systems.
