Effectiveness and costs of sialendoscopy in pediatric patients with salivary gland disorders

Sialendoscopy approach in treating juvenile recurrent parotitis: a systematic review

BACKGROUND

Juvenile recurrent parotitis (JRP) is characterized by recurrent episodes of painful parotid swelling in children. The purpose of this systematic review was to determine the diagnostic and therapeutic effectiveness of sialendoscopy in children affected by JRP.

METHODS

A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus and the Cochrane Library until April 2022, without language restrictions or specified start date. Quality assessment was performed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS).

RESULTS

Our review included 524 patients and 646 sialendoscopies. The sample sizes of the different studies ranged from 3 to 77 subjects. Most authors performed sialendoscopy under general anesthesia. The mean percentage of recurrences observed was 25.1% (95% confidence intervals) (CI 23.6-26.6). There was a statistically significant relationship between the number of attacks/year and recurrences (p < 0.05). The percentage of recurrences according to the type of irrigation/flushing used ranged from 22.2% to 25.2%, with no significant differences between the use of corticosteroids alone (25.2% of recurrences), corticosteroids plus antibiotics (25% of recurrences) or saline alone (22.2% of recurrences). Sialoendoscopy has proved in all cases to be a valid method for the diagnosis of JRP, but it does not allow a reliable differential diagnosis with other autoimmune parotitis such as Sjögren's syndrome.

CONCLUSION

According to our results, parotid sialoendoscopy was 74.9% effective as a primary treatment in the prevention of recurrent symptoms in JRP. The type of ductal irrigation used did not significantly influence the prognostic outcome.

Superficial Parotidectomy for Juvenile Recurrent Parotitis

OBJECTIVES

To investigate long-term outcomes, imaging, and pathologic findings in pediatric patients who underwent superficial parotidectomy for recalcitrant juvenile recurrent parotitis (JRP).

METHODS

Records for 20 children (23 parotidectomies; 9 females, 11 males; age at surgery of 8.6 ± 3.7 years) collected over a 10-year period (2012-2021) were reviewed. Parents were contacted via telephone to obtain extended follow-up. A simplified scoring system was used to assess imaging findings and an additional pathologic review was conducted to further clarify the underlying disease process.

RESULTS

All but one patient experienced resolution of their recurrent symptoms after superficial parotidectomy. Three of the patients studied required surgery on the contralateral side, and this could be predicted based on their imaging at the time of the initial surgery. Pathologic findings included ductal fibrosis, metaplasia, and dilatation as well as parenchymal atrophy and fatty deposition. There were no major surgical complications, however, the incidence of Frey's syndrome in this sample was 43.5% of surgical sites.

CONCLUSION

For patients with frequent recalcitrant symptoms or significant quality of life impairment related to JRP, superficial parotidectomy represents a potential treatment option with the noted reduction in symptom burden following surgery. Further longitudinal studies are needed.

Sialendoscopy in Pediatric Sialolithiasis: Two Cases of Salivary Stones in the Parotid Gland and Review of the Literature

Sialolithiasis is one of the most common diseases of the salivary glands and the most common cause of chronic obstructive sialadenitis. Whereas salivary stones are responsible for most of the cases of obstructive sialadenitis in the adult population, sialolithiasis in children is considered relatively rare. We describe two cases of a 9 and a 4-year-old male respectively, with parotid sialolithiasis treated with sialendoscopy. A systematic review of the current literature was also completed in order to evaluate all described cases of parotid sialolithiasis in the pediatric population. We found 25 articles eligible for a total of 42 cases of pediatric parotid sialolithiasis.

Sialendoscopy for pediatric salivary gland disorders: a study of safety and effect

PURPOSE

Sialendoscopy has become the preferred modality for managing pediatric salivary gland disorders (PSGD) including juvenile recurrent parotitis (JRP) and sialolithiasis. The literature remains sparse, but several case series have reported good outcomes and few complications. The aim of this study was to investigate the safety and efficacy of sialendoscopy for PSGD in a Danish setting.

METHODS

From a national sialendoscopy database, we included records of children who had undergone sialendoscopy for PSGD at our clinic over a 6-year period. Clinical and intraoperative data, follow-up and e-mail surveys after 1, 3 and 5 years were retrieved for analysis.

RESULTS

We included 52 procedures on 50 glands (32 parotid, 18 submandibular) in 49 children. Of eligible patients, 90% attended clinical follow-up, 80% answered the survey after 1 year, 80% after 3 years and 60% after 5 years. JRP was diagnosed in 33 cases, obstructive causes in 18 cases. Complications noted were ductal perforation (2%), transient lingual nerve affection (4%) and infection (2%). For JRP patients, overall symptoms had improved for 96% after 3 months, 81% after 1 year and 83% after 3 years. For patients suffering from obstruction, overall symptoms were improved for 93% after 3 months and for 100% after 1 year.

CONCLUSION

Sialendoscopy is a safe procedure for PSGD, and effective for sialolithiasis and symptom reduction in JRP.

Pediatric Sialendoscopy

Purpose of Review

To describe the pathophysiology, evaluation, and management of sialadenitis as well as the indications for and outcomes of sialendoscopy in the pediatric population.

Recent Findings

Pediatric sialadenitis makes up a small proportion of all salivary gland disease. Acute viral sialadenitis and juvenile recurrent parotitis are the most common forms of the condition. Juvenile recurrent parotitis is thought to be multifactorial in etiology with infectious, behavioral, autoimmune, and structural contributions. Review of the current literature supports a potential benefit from sialendoscopy for children with recurrent acute or chronic sialadenitis. Sialendoscopy can provide both diagnostic and therapeutic benefits with very low associated risks. The most common sialendoscopy findings include intraductal sludge or debris, sialoliths, and ductal strictures.

Summary

In the select pediatric population, sialendoscopy is a safe and effective procedure with associated decreased rates of recurrent acute sialadenitis including juvenile recurrent parotitis.

Cost analysis of sialendoscopy for the treatment of salivary gland disorders in children

INTRODUCTION

Recent advances in Otolaryngology have changed the diagnosis and therapy for salivary gland disorders. Sialendoscopy-assisted surgery is a minimally invasive, conservative procedure for functional preservation of the affected gland. The goals of this study are to assess the indications, use, and outcomes of pediatric sialendoscopy at a tertiary pediatric institution as well as to analyze the direct cost related to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with sialolithiasis and Juvenile Recurrent Parotitis managed with sialendoscopy.

METHODS

Retrospective cohort study of pediatric patients undergoing diagnostic and/or therapeutic sialendoscopy at a tertiary level children's hospital between 2012 and 2020. Demographic, clinical, surgical variables and direct hospital costs 1 year before and after the sialendoscopy procedure were collected and analyzed.

RESULTS

Twenty-two pediatric patients were included. There was male predominance (59.3%). The most common indication for sialendoscopy was Juvenile Recurrent Parotitis. Average age of onset was 6.5 years for patients with JPR and 14.2 years for patients with sialolithiasis. All patients had an average of 4.5 episodes before the first procedure. 8 patients required repeat sialendoscopy for recurrent symptoms. Mean total hospital costs were significantly higher in patients with JRP 1 year before and after the sialendoscopy ($4308.8 vs. $3330) compared to patients with sialolithiasis. Costs of the sialendoscopy and related expenses including anesthesia and PACU cost were similar in both studied groups ($13,506 vs. $13,022.9). Complete resolution of symptoms was achieved in 14 patients with JRP and all patients with sialolithiasis.

CONCLUSION

Sialendoscopy is a low-risk procedure that aids in the treatment for pediatric salivary gland disorders. The costs related to sialendoscopy are substantial and patients with JRP incur higher hospital preoperative and postoperative costs compared to patients with sialolithiasis.

Economic analysis of the contribution of sialendoscopy in managing non-tumoral principal salivary gland pathology in the Réunion Island: Economic evaluation following the CHEERS methodology

GOALS

Cost analysis of the contribution of sialendoscopy in the treatment of non-tumoral pathologies of the main salivary glands, in Réunion Island, a French overseas territory.

OBJECTIVES

Calculation and comparison of median pricing (i.e., median payment to the healthcare establishment) per patient before and after the introduction of sialendoscopy, in the only regional establishment practicing sialendoscopy and in the whole of Réunion Island. Material and method A multicenter retrospective cost study was conducted over an 8-year period, before and after the introduction of sialendoscopy (period A: 2011-2014 and period B: 2015-2018), according to the CHEERS guidelines for economic studies, and included inpatients with non-tumoral pathology of the main salivary glands, whether treated by sialendoscopy or not.

RESULTS

Two hundred sixty-five patients were included, 139 of whom were treated by sialendoscopy: 74 in 2011-2014 and 191 in 2015-2018. Between the two periods, median pricing in the only center practicing sialendoscopy did not vary significantly: €3468 vs. €3368 (i.e., +2.9% (P=0.1)). In the Island as a whole, pricing increased significantly: €598 vs. €2332, (i.e., +390% (P<0.0001)).

CONCLUSION

Sialendoscopy is cost-effective in France in the public healthcare sector if outpatient management is optimal, but significantly increases the public health budget. It makes it possible to recruit and manage previously untreated patients (small stones, salivary strictures, etc.).

Medical analysis of the contribution of sialendoscopy in managing non-tumoral main salivary gland pathology in Reunion Island: Observational study following STROBE guidelines

GOALS

To perform a medical analysis of the contribution of sialendoscopy in the treatment of non-tumoral pathologies of the main salivary glands, in Reunion Island, a French overseas territory.

MATERIAL AND METHOD

A multicenter retrospective observational study was conducted for an 8-year period, before and after introduction of sialendoscopy (2011-2014 and 2015-2018), following STROBE guidelines.

OBJECTIVES

To compare populations treated before (period A) and after (period B) the introduction of sialendoscopy in terms of clinical characteristics, and analyze the characteristics of patients treated by sialendoscopy.

RESULTS

Two hundred and sixty-five patients were included: 74 in 2011-2014 and 191 in 2015-2018; 139 had sialendoscopy. Populations A and B were comparable except for the proportion of parotids treated (9% vs. 31%, respectively; P<0.0001), and smaller stones (11mm vs. 7.4mm, respectively; P=0.003). One hundred and ten pure sialendoscopies and 29 combined routes (20.8%) were performed: 63% submandibular and 37% parotid. Median age was 46 years. The M/F sex ratio was 0.96. Thirty-seven patients presented stenosis. There were 10 cases of papillary catheterization failure (7.1%), and 16 false routes or creation of false channels (11.5%), including 9 during the learning period. The rate of crossover to gland resection decreased: 10.45% for 2015-2016 and 5.56% for 2017-2018.

CONCLUSION

Although follow-up ranged between 12 and 55months (median, 30months), sialendoscopy appeared to be a useful and reliable technique, with a role in therapeutic strategy for the management of non-tumoral salivary pathologies in Reunion Island.

Treatment of juvenile recurrent parotitis with irrigation therapy without anesthesia

Purpose

No standardized treatment regimen exists for juvenile recurrent parotitis (JRP). The investigators hypothesized that irrigation with saline only without local anesthesia will be an effective and beneficial option.

Methods

Using a retrospective study design, a series of children with typical symptoms of JRP who were treated with at least one irrigation therapy were evaluated. This treatment consisted of irrigation of the affected gland with 3–10 ml saline solution without any type of anesthesia. The outcome variables were patient/parent satisfaction, frequency and duration of acute JRP episodes, and the need for antibiotics before and after irrigation therapy.

Results

The case series was composed of six boys aged 3.3–7.7 years who experienced one to eight sessions of irrigation therapy. The period of follow-up was 9–64 months. We observed a total resolution of symptoms in two children and an improvement in the other four. No relevant side effects were seen.

Conclusion

Our results suggest that irrigation therapy is a reasonable, simple, and minimally invasive treatment alternative for JRP. In contrast to sialendoscopy or sialography, there is no need for general anesthesia or radiation exposure.

Botulinum Toxin Injection for Chronic Parotitis: A Multi-Center and Prospective Trial

OBJECTIVE

When conservative therapy fails for chronic parotitis, sialendoscopic treatment or surgical excision can be considered. However, these are financially costly or invasive. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of botulinum toxin (BTX) injection and to further analyze its effect on parotid gland function and volume using salivary single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)-computed tomography (CT).

METHODS

This clinical trial has been registered in the Clinical Research Information Service, Republic of Korea. Fourteen patients with chronic parotitis received BTX injections into the parotid glands. Pain, postprandial pain, swelling, aesthetic discomfort, and salivary flow rate were assessed before injection, at 2 weeks, and at 1, 3, and 6 months. Salivary SPECT-CT was performed before injection and again 3 and 6 months after to assess the volume and uptake changes.

RESULTS

All subjective symptoms decreased significantly until 1 month and then increased. However, at 6 months, all subjective symptoms were determined to be better than before injection. The unstimulated and stimulated salivary flow rate did not show a significant difference over time. No significant difference was noted in parotid gland volume or uptake on salivary SPECT-CT over time.

CONCLUSION

BTX injection can be an alternative treatment option for chronic parotitis.

Pediatric sialendoscopy: An 11-year study from a single tertiary care center

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the suitability, benefits, and limitations of sialendoscopy for pediatric patients.

METHODS

We performed a retrospective analysis of all pediatric sialendoscopy patients (aged 16 years or younger) in our tertiary care institution between September 2007 and October 2018. We characterized patient data, procedure-related factors, complications, and outcomes.

RESULTS

In total, 55 sialendoscopies were performed on 42 patients. Among these, 36 were diagnostic endoscopies and 19 were interventional. Five endoscopies were performed under local anesthesia. We identified 16 sialolithiasis patients, where removal of a sialolith was possible in 11 (69%) cases; one case required a second endoscopy. We removed two sialoliths under local anesthesia. Among recurrent juvenile parotitis (RJP) patients, 18/20 (90%) were symptom-free after a single sialendoscopy, and all after a second endoscopy. The median follow-up time was 70 months. We achieved a 95% success rate in sialendoscopies, with a failure-to-treat rate of 15%. The complication rate for the study cohort was 2%, with prolonged parotid swelling the only complication encountered.

CONCLUSIONS

Sialendoscopy represented a safe and effective method to treat pediatric patients. Local anesthesia was successful in selected cases, even for sialolith removal. Sialendoscopy had a soothing effect on RJP and the majority of sialoliths were suitable for endoscopic removal.

Juvenile recurrent parotitis: Diagnostic and therapeutic effectiveness of sialography. Retrospective study on 110 children

INTRODUCTION

Juvenile recurrent parotitis (JRP) is characterized by recurrent episodes of painful parotid swelling, generally associated with non-obstructive sialectasia of the parotid gland. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic and therapeutic effectiveness of sialography in children affected by JRP.

METHODS

Clinical records of 110 outpatients with a diagnosis of JRP followed up from 2008 to 2017 at the Unit of Paediatric Otorhinolaryngology, Surgery Department of the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital of Rome, were retrospectively reviewed. Data on demographics, number of acute episodes/year, course of disease, site of symptoms and duration of follow up were collected. The inclusion criteria were: at least two or more episodes of intermittent swelling of the parotid glands on one side or both sides during the last 6 months, age <16 years. Exclusion criteria were: obstructive lesions, dental malocclusion, Sjogren syndrome, congenital IgA immunodeficiency, and relevant systemic diseases. Outcome of the procedure was measured by evaluating number and degree of episodes of parotid swelling before and after sialography.

RESULTS

Sialography has been shown in all cases to be a valid method in the diagnosis of JRP. Following the execution of the sialography, in 98 patients (89% of cases) there was a statistically significant improvement of disease with a mean reduction of 67.4% of episodes of parotid swelling (p < 0.05). In 75 patients there was marked improvement of the symptomatology (p < 0.05). In 23 patients partial resolution occurred (p < 0.05); in 12 patients there was no resolution or a reduction less than 30% of episodes (p > 0.05). There was a statistically significant relationship between the number of attacks/year and the degree of glandular function, pre and post-sialography in 2-way ANOVA test (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Sialography is effective method not only as a diagnostic procedure but also as a therapeutic procedure in treatment of JRP. It is a method that can be carried out in ambulatory setting, without anaesthesia, with a minimum cost and with a very low rate of complications. In a disease with tendency to spontaneous resolution like JRP, sialography represent a therapeutic option alternative to more invasive treatment.

Pediatric Sialendoscopy for Recurrent Salivary Gland Swelling: Workup, Findings, and Outcomes

Introduction:

Recurrent salivary gland swelling of the parotid and submandibular glands results in painful swelling in the pediatric population. There is no defined algorithm for workup and treatment of these disorders, resulting in wide heterogeneity and in some cases overuse of computed tomography (CT) imaging. Sialendoscopy (SE) is an interventional option for recurrent swelling of both glands; however, its effectiveness in the pediatric population is still being determined.

Objectives:

To assess preoperative imaging utilization and benefit in the workup of recurrent pediatric sialadenitis, intraoperative SE findings, and postoperative outcomes after intervention with SE.

Methods:

Case-series with a 5-year retrospective chart review on children undergoing SE for recurrent sialadenitis.

Results:

Forty-nine SE procedures were performed on 38 parotid glands (PG) and 11 submandibular glands (SMGs) in 29 children. CT imaging findings were useful for identifying a stone or stricture and guiding surgical management in 45.5% of SMGs versus 2.6% of PGs ( P < .001). A stone was found in 45.5% of SMGs and none in PG ( P < .001). SE intervention such as balloon dilation or stone removal was performed in 54.6% of SMGs and 5.3% of PGs ( P < .001). 74% of parotid patients undergoing SE responded to 1 intervention with a cessation of recurrent gland swelling, while 26% required additional interventions. One hundred percent of SMG patients responded to first intervention. There was no improvement in the beneficial effect of SE with steroid injection ( P = .897) regardless of steroid used ( P = .082).

Conclusion:

CT findings were found to be low yield for recurrent parotid swelling, and ultrasound is a recommended first-line step for PG pathology. SE is a recommended first-line intervention for SMG and parotid sialadenitis as demonstrated by 100% and 74% response rate to initial SE, respectively.

Costs of sialendoscopy and impact on health-related quality of life

Purpose

To analyse costs related to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with sialolithiasis and sialadenitis managed with sialendoscopy, and to prospectively evaluate the impact of sialendoscopy on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in a longitudinal follow-up study.

Methods

All patients undergoing sialendoscopy or sialendoscopy-assisted surgery at a tertiary care university hospital between January 2014 and May 2016 were identified from a surgical database, and the direct hospital costs were retrospectively evaluated from 1 year before to 1 year after the sialendoscopy. The 15D HRQoL questionnaire and a questionnaire exploring the use of health care services during the preceding 3 months were mailed to the patients before sialendoscopy as well as at 3 and 12 months after the operation.

Results

A total of 260 patients were identified. Mean total hospital costs, costs related to the sialendoscopy, and complications were significantly higher in sialolithiasis patients than in patients with other diagnoses. 74 patients returned the baseline 15D questionnaire, and 51 patients all three 15D questionnaires. At baseline, the dimensions “discomfort and symptoms” and “distress” were lower in patients than in age- and gender-standardised general population, but the total 15D score did not differ significantly. The dimension “discomfort and symptoms” improved significantly at 3 and 12 months postoperatively, and the mean total HRQoL score improved in patients with sialolithiasis at 3 months postoperatively.

Conclusions

The costs related to sialendoscopy are substantial and the cost-effectiveness of sialendoscopy warrants further studies. However, sialendoscopy seems to reduce patients’ discomfort and ailments and to improve HRQoL at least in patients with sialolithiasis.

Juvenile recurrent parotitis: A systematic review of treatment studies

Juvenile recurrent parotitis is a rare recurrent inflammation of the parotid glands occurring in children. The etiology remains obscure and the treatment is still debated. In the present study, we perform a systematic review of the literature with the purpose of identifying and discussing the treatment options emerged over the last 28 years in order to prevent recurrent episodes of parotitis. We ultimately included 24 studies. The definitions used for juvenile recurrent parotitis varied widely and none of the selected studies referred exactly to the same definition. Only one was a randomized controlled trial and it showed marked benefits with the use of Bear Bile and Huangqi, two traditional Chinese medicines. Two additional study on sialendoscopy included a control group but was not randomized. All the remaining contributions were case series or case reports. The vast majority (n = 19) of the selected studies reported on sialendoscopy. They all documented improvement of the condition following this intervention. An analysis grouping all these studies (corresponding to 336 children) showed that only 25.8% (95% Confidence Interval: 21.5-30.8) of the treated children had further recurrences. However, the only two controlled study on sialendoscopy showed a similar improvement in controls. The remaining four studies were on sialography (n = 2), on oral appliance in the specific group of children with concomitant dental malocclusion (n = 1) on ductal hydrocortisone infusion through catheter inserted in the parotid duct (n = 1). Improvements were documented in all four contributions. This systematic review of the literature did not consent us to draw definite conclusions on the most suitable treatment for juvenile recurrent parotitis. The available evidence is indeed weak and difficult to interpret because of the scarcity of randomized controlled trials, the heterogeneity of the definitions used and the high rate of spontaneous resolution. Future large and well-designed randomized controlled trials that will include children fulfilling a shared definition of the condition are warranted.

Outcomes of interventional sialendoscopy for obstructive salivary gland disorders: an Italian multicentre study

Interventional sialendoscopy has become the predominant therapeutic procedure for the management of obstructive salivary disorders, but only a few multicentre studies of large series of patients with a long-term follow-up have been published. This Italian multicentre study involved 1152 patients (553 females; mean age 50 years) who, after at least a clinical and ultrasonographic evaluation, underwent a total of 1342 diagnostic and interventional sialendoscopies, 44.6% of which involved the parotid gland. 12% (n = 138) of patients underwent multiple treatments. The procedure was successful in 1309 cases. In 33 cases (2.4%) the procedure could not be concluded mainly because of complete duct stenosis (21 cases). Salivary stones were the main cause of obstruction (55%), followed by ductal stenosis and anomalies (16%), mucous plugs (14.5%) and sialodochitis (4.7%). Complete therapeutic success was obtained in 92.5% of patients after one or more procedures, and was ineffective in < 8%. Untoward effects (peri and postoperative complications) were observed in 5.4% of cases. Sialendoscopy proved to be an effective, valid and safe procedure in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of non-neoplastic obstructive salivary gland diseases.

Sialendoscopy for sialolithiasis in children: 4-8 years follow up

Sialolithiasis is rare in children, there are no guidelines for its treatment, and there are few, if any, long term follow-up studies. We report a retrospective review of medical records of children who were treated for sialolithiasis by sialendoscopy between 1 January 2007 and 31 December 2011, and who have been followed up for 4-8 years. Personal and clinical details, including age, sex, symptoms, whether the lithiasis was parotid or submandibular, the technique of sialendoscopy and complications, were recorded. Twenty-six children (30 sides) were successfully treated by sialendoscopy between 2007 and 2011 (mean (range) age 12 (3-17) years). Stones were removed from the parotid gland in four patients and the submandibular gland in 22. The main indication for sialendoscopy was swelling of the salivary gland during meals. Twenty-six procedures were done endoscopically. Twelve were treated with a wire basket alone, 10 by the combined approach, and laser was used in eight. Four patients developed complications, but without long-term effects. During follow-up of 4-8 years there were no recurrent swellings. We conclude that endoscopic treatment of stones in childhood is an efficient and conservative option for salivary glands, has few complications and no clinical recurrence at medium to long-term follow-up.

Sialendoscopy for non-stone disorders: The current evidence

OBJECTIVE

Review the current literature on the use of sialendoscopy in the treatment of non-stone disorders of the major salivary glands.

DATA SOURCES

Eligible articles that reported on the use of sialendoscopy in the treatment of non-stone disorders were identified using MEDLINE, Embase, and Google Scholar through May 2016. The search used key words sialendoscopy, salivary endoscopy, salivary scope, salivary duct stenosis, salivary duct stricture, Sjogren's disease, radioiodine sialadenitis, salivary duct obstruction, sialadenitis, chronic sialadenitis, juvenile recurrent parotitis, parotitis, and radiation sialadenitis.

REVIEW METHODS

Full-length prospective and retrospective original articles; systemic reviews; and meta-analysis, including adults and children with adequate data for evaluating the sialendoscopy for non-stone disorders, were included. Individual case reports were excluded.

RESULTS

There is an increasing trend for the use of sialendoscopy for salivary obstruction caused by a wide variety of non-stone disorders worldwide. The studies of sialendoscopy for non-stone disorders are often retrospective, of smaller sample size, and more subjective in measurement of patient outcome. The most common indications currently for the procedure are scars, juvenile recurrent parotitis, radioiodine sialadenitis, and Sjögren syndrome, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Although the initial evidence for the use of sialendoscopy for non-stone disorders is not as established as that for stones, it remains a promising gland-preserving tool in the management of non-stone disorders of major salivary glands.
