Light-emitting diode therapy in chemotherapy-induced mucositis

Low-energy LED red light inhibits the NF-κB pathway and promotes hPDLSCs proliferation and osteogenesis in a TNF-α environment in vitro

There are few studies on the effect of low-energy LED red light on periodontal tissue regeneration in an inflammatory environment. In this study, Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assays were used to detect the effects of TNF-α at three different concentrations (0, 10 ng/ml, and 20 ng/ml) on the proliferation of human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs), and 10 ng/ml was selected as the subsequent experimental stimulation concentration. CCK-8 assays were used to detect the effect of LED red light with energy density of 1 J/ cm2, 3 J/ cm2, and 5 J/cm2 on the proliferation of hPDLSCs. The promotion effect of energy density of 5 J/cm2 on the proliferation of hPDLSCS was the most obvious (p < 0.05). Set CON group, ODM group, ODM + 10 ng/ml TNF-α group, and ODM + 10 ng/ml TNF-α + 5 J/ cm2 LED red light group. Alkaline phosphatase staining and activity detection, alizarin red staining and calcium nodules quantitative detection of osteoblast differentiation products, real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR detection of osteoblast gene expression (Runx2, Col-I, OPN, OCN). The results showed that ODM showed the strongest osteoblast ability, followed by ODM + 10 ng/ml TNF-α + 5 J/ cm2 LED red light group. The osteoblast ability of ODM + 10 ng/ml TNF-α was decreased, but was not found in CON group. Western blot was used to detect the expression of NF-κB pathway protein and osteoblast-related proteins (Runx2, Col-I, OPN, OCN) after addition of PDTC inhibitor. The results showed that the expression of p-IκBα was increased and the expression of IκBα was decreased (p < 0.05). The expression of osteoblast protein increased after the addition of inhibitor (p < 0.05). Therefore, in an inflammatory environment constructed by 10 ng/ml TNF-α, 5 J/cm2 LED red light can upregulate the proliferation and osteogenesis of hPDLSCs by inhibiting NF-κB signaling pathway.

Effect of multidrug solution for the treatment of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis in vivo

Objective

Evaluate the effect of a multidrug solution, adopted by a referral hospital for cancer to control and treat chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis in rats.

Methods

Oral mucositis (OM) was induced by 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU), and the animals were treated with saline (n = 8, G1), 0.12% chlorhexidine (n = 8, G2); and multidrug solution (n = 8, G3). The animals were submitted to clinical and histological analysis of the lesion using mucosal fragments. The animals' food consumption during treatment was also evaluated.

Results

Clinical improvement (p < 0.05) was observed in the groups treated with the multidrug solution and 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate. In G2 and G3, there was a prevalence of reepithelialization covering <50% of the lesion. Evaluation of the inflammatory infiltrate indicated that the G1 treatment permitted an intense inflammatory response in all animals, yet this evaluation parameter was moderate in groups G2 and G3. The G3 group (p < 0.05) presented higher food consumption than the other groups.

Conclusions

The multidrug solution improved the clinical and histological parameters of the chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis, as well as promoted an increase in food intake.

Experimental Chemotherapy-Induced Mucositis: A Scoping Review Guiding the Design of Suitable Preclinical Models

Mucositis is a common and most debilitating complication associated with the cytotoxicity of chemotherapy. The condition affects the entire alimentary canal from the mouth to the anus and has a significant clinical and economic impact. Although oral and intestinal mucositis can occur concurrently in the same individual, these conditions are often studied independently using organ-specific models that do not mimic human disease. Hence, the purpose of this scoping review was to provide a comprehensive yet systematic overview of the animal models that are utilised in the study of chemotherapy-induced mucositis. A search of PubMed/MEDLINE and Scopus databases was conducted to identify all relevant studies. Multiple phases of filtering were conducted, including deduplication, title/abstract screening, full-text screening, and data extraction. Studies were reported according to the updated Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. An inter-rater reliability test was conducted using Cohen's Kappa score. After title, abstract, and full-text screening, 251 articles met the inclusion criteria. Seven articles investigated both chemotherapy-induced intestinal and oral mucositis, 198 articles investigated chemotherapy-induced intestinal mucositis, and 46 studies investigated chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis. Among a total of 205 articles on chemotherapy-induced intestinal mucositis, 103 utilised 5-fluorouracil, 34 irinotecan, 16 platinum-based drugs, 33 methotrexate, and 32 other chemotherapeutic agents. Thirteen articles reported the use of a combination of 5-fluorouracil, irinotecan, platinum-based drugs, or methotrexate to induce intestinal mucositis. Among a total of 53 articles on chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis, 50 utilised 5-fluorouracil, 2 irinotecan, 2 methotrexate, 1 topotecan and 1 with other chemotherapeutic drugs. Three articles used a combination of these drugs to induce oral mucositis. Various animal models such as mice, rats, hamsters, piglets, rabbits, and zebrafish were used. The chemotherapeutic agents were introduced at various dosages via three routes of administration. Animals were mainly mice and rats. Unlike intestinal mucositis, most oral mucositis models combined mechanical or chemical irritation with chemotherapy. In conclusion, this extensive assessment of the literature revealed that there was a large variation among studies that reproduce oral and intestinal mucositis in animals. To assist with the design of a suitable preclinical model of chemotherapy-induced alimentary tract mucositis, animal types, routes of administration, dosages, and types of drugs were reported in this study. Further research is required to define an optimal protocol that improves the translatability of findings to humans.

Treatment Parameters of Photobiomodulation in the Prevention of Non-surgical Cancer Treatment-Induced Oral Mucositis: A Review of Preclinical Studies

Introduction: The most important side effect after non-surgery cancer treatment (NSCT) is oral mucositis (OM) which degrades the quality of life. Using photobiomodulation (PBM), formerly known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT), in the prevention of NSCT-induced OM was widely studied. Hence, this review evaluates the efficacy of optical treatment parameters behind the working process of PBM in preventing NSCT-induced OM in preclinical studies. Methods: Using the PubMed, Scopus and Embase databases, the present study systematically reviewed existing preclinical studies for optical treatment parameters of PBM in preventing NSCT-induced OM in experimental models without restriction on the year of publication. Results: In total, 51 articles were recognized during the search of the literature, and only 16 research papers were included in this review, taking into consideration the inclusion as well as exclusion benchmarks. The reviewed studies showed that a consensus has yet to be reached on the optimal PBM treatment parameters in preventing NSCT-induced OM. However, a wavelength of 660 nm, a power density of 40 mW as well as fluence which ranged between 2 and 6 J/cm2 were mostly utilized in the included studies. Furthermore, the severity of NSCT-induced OM was reduced following PBM application with no reported severe side effects. Conclusion: The efficacy of PBM with the associated optical parameters is a promising strategy in preventing NSCT-induced OM. However, the optimal parameters of PBM need to be investigated.

Phototherapy With LED as an Effective Treatment for Chemotherapy-Induced Oral Mucositis in Hamsters

Introduction: Oral mucositis (OM) has been considered one of the most feared collateral effects of oncological treatments. Some therapies have been used, such as light-emitting diode (LED), with promising results, but with no sufficient evidence in the literature. Objective: Our study aimed to evaluate, by clinical and histological analysis, the effect of LED on the treatment of chemotherapy-induced OM (CIOM) in an animal model. Methods: Twenty male hamsters were equally distributed to two groups: control (C), which received anesthesia and CIOM induction; and LED (L), which received anesthesia, CIOM induction, and LED treatment (635 nm, 120 mW, 0.48 J). The clinical analysis was performed through two specific scales for OM analysis on days 5, 7 and 10 of the experiment. In addition, the injured area of all hamsters check pouch mucosa was removed and processed for histological analysis on the last experimental day. Results: After statistical analysis, group L showed less severity of OM when compared with the C group (P <0.05); beyond that, both healed completely on day 10. Conclusion: Our results suggested that the phototherapy with LED had a positive effect on accelerating repair, reducing the severity of CIOM.

Dose-responses of Stem Cells from Human Exfoliated Teeth to Infrared LED Irradiation

Despite several reports regarding tissue regeneration, including pulp repair induced by different light sources, only limited data have been reported concerning the effects of light-emitting diodes (LED) on stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHEDs). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different energy densities of infrared LED on the cell viability, number of cells and mineralized tissue production by SHEDs. SHEDs were obtained from near-exfoliation primary teeth (n=3), seeded in plain DMEM (104 cells/cm2), and irradiated by a LED prototype (LEDTable 850 nm, 40 mW/cm2) delivering 0 (control), 2, 4, 8, 15 or 30 J/cm2 (n=9). Cell viability (MTT assay), cell proliferation (trypan blue assay), and mineralized nodule (MN) formation (alizarin red stain) were assessed 12 and 72 h post-irradiation. Data were subjected to Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests (α=0.05). Cells irradiated with 2 or 4 J/cm2 exhibited higher metabolism at 72 h, and all energy densities provided increase in cell proliferation after 12 h. Regarding MN formation, the best results were observed at 72 h after SHED irradiation with 8 and 15 J/cm2. It was concluded that the cell viability, cell number and MN formation by pulp cells are enhanced after exposure to infrared LED irradiation. Overall, the greatest SHED biostimulation was obtained with 4 and 8 J/cm2.

Light-emitting diode irradiation promotes donor site wound healing of the free gingival graft

BACKGROUND

This study aims to evaluate the effect of light-emitting diode (LED) light irradiation on the donor wound site of the free gingival graft.

METHODS

Rat gingival fibroblasts were chosen to assess the cellular activities and in vitro wound healing with 0 to 20 J/cm(2) LED light irradiation. Seventy-two Sprague-Dawley rats received daily 0, 10 (low-dose [LD]), or 20 (high-dose [HD]) J/cm(2) LED light irradiation on the opened palatal wound and were euthanized after 4 to 28 days; the healing pattern was assessed by histology, histochemistry for collagen deposition, and immunohistochemistry for tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α infiltration. The wound mRNA levels of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), TNF-α, the receptor for advanced glycation end products, vascular endothelial growth factor, periostin, Type I collagen, and fibronectin were also evaluated.

RESULTS

Cellular viability and wound closure were significantly promoted, and cytotoxicity was inhibited significantly using 5 J/cm(2) LED light irradiation in vitro. The wound closure, reepithelialization, and collagen deposition were accelerated, and sequestrum formation and inflammatory cell and TNF-α infiltration were significantly reduced in the LD group. HO-1 and TNF-α were significantly upregulated in the HD group, and most of the repair-associated genes were significantly upregulated in both the LD and HD groups at day 7. Persistent RAGE upregulation was noted in both the LD and HD groups until day 14.

CONCLUSION

LED light irradiation at 660 nm accelerated palatal wound healing, potentially via reducing reactive oxygen species production, facilitating angiogenesis, and promoting provisional matrix and wound reorganization.

Effect of laser (λ 660 nm) and LED (λ 630 nm) photobiomodulation on formocresol-induced oral ulcers: a clinical and histological study on rodents

The aim of this study was to evaluate, clinically and histologically, the influence of laser and LED photobiomodulation in the healing of formocresol-induced oral mucosa ulcers of rats. We used 60 Wistar rats in which oral ulcers were induced on the gingiva of the lower incisors. Forty-eight hours after inducing the ulcers, the animals were divided into three groups: laser, LED, and untreated. Animals from the laser group received irradiation with GaAlAs, 660 nm, CW, 40 mW, φ 4 mm(2), 4.8 J/cm(2). Animals from the LED group received irradiation with InGaAIP, 630 nm, 150 mW, 4.8 J/cm(2), 0.8 cm spot. Forty-eight hours after oral ulcer induction, both irradiations were applied in a punctuate manner in the center of the ulcer at 48-h interval until the end of the experimental period. The animals were killed at 3, 5, 7, and 11 days after day 0. The results of the clinical evaluation showed that the laser and LED phototherapies were able to accelerate the healing of formocresol-induced oral ulcers, which occurred first in the laser group (ANOVA, p < 0.05). Histologically, there was a slight variation between LED and laser therapy; therefore, the laser group proved to be effective in accelerating wound healing, especially at 5 days, whereas the LED group was more effective at the end of the experimental period. It was concluded that laser and LED photobiomodulation were effective in accelerating the healing of formocresol-induced oral ulcers in both clinical and histological aspects.

Transdentinal cell photobiomodulation using different wavelengths

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of transdentinal irradiation with different light-emitting diode (LED) parameters on odontoblast-like cells (MDPC-23).

METHODS AND MATERIALS

Human dentin discs (0.2 mm thick) were obtained, and cells were seeded on their pulp surfaces with complete culture medium (Dulbecco modified Eagle medium). Discs were irradiated from the occlusal surfaces with LED at different wavelengths (450, 630, and 840 nm) and energy densities (0, 4, and 25 J/cm(2)). Cell viability (methyltetrazolium assay), alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP), total protein synthesis (TP), and cell morphology (scanning electron microscopy) were evaluated. Gene expression of collagen type I (Col-I) was analyzed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Data were analyzed by the Mann-Whitney test with a 5% significance level.

RESULTS

Higher cell viability (21.8%) occurred when the cells were irradiated with 630 nm LED at 25 J/cm(2). Concerning TP, no statistically significant difference was observed between irradiated and control groups. A significant increase in ALP activity was observed for all tested LED parameters, except for 450 nm at 4 J/cm(2). Quantitative PCR showed a higher expression of Col-I by the cells subjected to infrared LED irradiation at 4 J/cm(2). More attached cells were observed on dentin discs subjected to irradiation at 25 J/cm(2) than at 4 J/cm(2).

CONCLUSION

The infrared LED irradiation at an energy density of 4 J/cm(2) and red LED at an energy density of 25 J/cm(2) were the most effective parameters for transdentinal photobiomodulation of cultured odontoblast-like cells.

Chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis: effect of LED and laser phototherapy treatment protocols

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Over the last few decades, many studies have focused on the effect of lasers on the management of oral mucositis in oncologic patients treated with chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. However, the effect of light-emitting diode (LED) has been poorly studied, and was not compared with that of laser phototherapy (LPT). For this reason, the aim of the present study was to clinically compare the effect of these two therapies on chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis (CIOM) and pain.

METHODS

Forty patients with CIOM were divided into two groups: G1, patients treated with LPT; G2, patients treated with LED. The treatment was administered during 10 consecutive days, with exception of weekends. LPT was applied using an InGaAlP laser (660 nm/40 mW/6.6 J cm-(2)/0.24 J per point/0.036 cm(2) of spot size). LED phototherapy was applied using 0.24 J per point/80 mW/630 nm/1 cm(2) of spot size. CIOM was assessed during each session in accordance to the World Health Organization (WHO) score. The patient self-assessed pain was scored on a visual analog scale (VAS).

RESULTS

The mean VAS and WHO scores were significantly smaller in the LED group (p<0.05). However, both groups required the same number of days to reach score zero for mucositis and pain (p>0.05). Moreover, in the group with severe mucositis (score III), there was a lower frequency of patients with complete healing and pain relief, with the exception of analgesia in G2, in which almost all patients were completely relieved from pain.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings suggest that LED therapy is more effective than LPT in the treatment of COIM, with the parameters used in the present study.

Infrared LED irradiation photobiomodulation of oxidative stress in human dental pulp cells

AIM

To investigate the effect of infrared light-emitting diode (LED) irradiation on the oxidative stress induced in human dental pulp cells (HDPCs) by lipopolysaccharide (LPS).

METHODOLOGY

Human dental pulp cells (HDPCs) were harvested from sound primary teeth that were near exfoliation. Cells were seeded (10(5)  cells cm(-2) ) using α-MEM supplemented with 10% FBS and after 24 h, were placed in contact with LPS (10 μg mL(-1) of culture medium). Immediately afterwards, HDPCs were subjected to a single irradiation with an infrared LED (855 nm) delivering different doses of energy (0, 2, 4, 8, 15 or 30 J cm(-2) ). For each dose, there was a control group without LPS application. Twenty-four hours after irradiation, groups were tested for nitric oxide (NO) quantification, cell viability (MTT assay) and qualitative assessment of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Data were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced stress resulted in significant increase in NO production by HDPC without causing damage to cell respiratory metabolism. Irrespective of energy dose delivered, NO production was significantly reduced when LPS-stressed cells were irradiated with infrared LED (2 J cm(-2) , P = 0.003; 95% CI = 5.84-27.71; 4 J cm(-2) , P = 0.001; 95% CI = 7.52-26.39; 8 J cm(-2) , P = 0.0195; 95% CI = -2.86-16.01; 15 J cm(-2) , P = 0.0001; 95% CI = 12.10-30.96; 30 J cm(-2) , P = 0.007; 95% CI = 5.84-24.71). The highest decrease in NO production was observed when 15 J cm(-2) was delivered to cells. Infrared LED irradiation resulted in a decrease in ROS production, whilst HDPC metabolism was not significantly affected.

CONCLUSION

Biomodulation of oxidative stress of HPDC can be achieved by irradiation with a single dose of infrared LED. Within the range investigated, 15 J cm(-2) resulted in the least production of NO.

LED and laser photobiomodulation in the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis: experimental study in hamsters

PURPOSE

This paper aims to evaluate the effects of laser (660 nm) and light-emitting diode (LED) (670 nm) irradiation in the cheek pouch mucosa of hamsters with oral mucositis (OM) induced by chemotherapy (Che) with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In the preventive groups, the photobiomodulation was started 1 day before the drug administration and was performed every 48 h (Ia, IIa, Ib, and IIb). In the therapeutic groups (IIIa, IIIb, IVa, and IVb), the irradiations were started on the third day after the Che d(0) and was performed every 48 h. In both groups, animals were sacrificed 7 or 14 days after Che. In the positive control groups, the hamsters were subjected to Che but did not receive irradiation, and they were sacrificed in 7 days (Va) or 14 days (Vb). In the negative control groups, no procedures were done and the animals were sacrificed 7 days (Vc) or 14 days (Vd) after the experiment started.

RESULTS

The results indicated loss of body mass, xerostomia, and alopecia in the animals subjected to Che and the healing of OM to different degrees after the photobiomodulation treatment. Histologically, the positive control and experimental groups showed inflammation, predominately with lymphocytes and plasma cells, which tended to diminish with time. Epithelial atrophy, hyperemia, fibroblast proliferation, and vascular congestion were also observed at those intervals.

CONCLUSIONS

The best results were obtained from the preventive laser and LED photobiomodulation groups; both treatments were effective in diminishing the OM lesions.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

A noninvasive and effective method with sparse side effects of OM would be desirable for use in cancer centers around the world.

Effects of red light-emitting diode irradiation on dental pulp cells

Light irradiation activates a range of cellular processes in a variety of cell types, including stem cells, and can promote tissue repair. This study investigated the effects of light-emitting diode (LED) exposure on dental pulp cells (DPCs). Dose response analysis at 20-second intervals up to 120 seconds demonstrated that a LED array emitting 653-nm red light stimulated significantly increased cell growth at 3 and 7 days post-irradiation with 40 (149 mJ/cm(2)) and 60 (224 mJ/cm(2)) seconds of radiant exposure. Double-dosing cells at days 1 and 4 of a 7-day culture period with 60-second (224 mJ/cm(2)) LED exposure significantly increased cell growth compared with a single dosing regime. BrdU analysis demonstrated significantly increased proliferation rates associated with significantly increased ATP, nitric oxide (NO), and mitochondrial metabolic activity. LED-stimulated NO levels were not reduced by inhibition of NO-synthase activity. Light exposure also rescued the inhibition of mitochondrial dysfunction and increased levels of in vitro mineralization compared with control. Media exchange experiments indicated that autocrine signaling was not likely responsible for red-light-induced DPC activity. In conclusion, data analysis indicated that 653-nm LED irradiation promoted DPC responses relevant to tissue repair, and this is likely mediated by increased mitochondrial activity.

Estudo morfométrico da terapia LED de baixa potência em tendinite de ratos

A terapia LED de baixa potência possui efeitos analgésico e antiinflamatório. O objetivo desse estudo foi analisar a ação da terapia com LED de baixa potência na reparação tendínea por meio de histologia e histomorfometria. Foram usados 25 ratos Wistar, de 220 a 250 g, divididos em três grupos experimentais avaliados no 7º e 14º dia: A, tendinite induzida sem tratamento; B, tendinite induzida tratada com LED de baixa potência, densidade de energia 4 J/cm² por 120 segundos; e C, sem indução de tendinite. A histomorfometria mostrou-se altamente significativa (p<0,001) na terapia com LED em contrarrelógio de 14 dias, comparada ao grupo saudável (C). Entretanto, não mostrou significância levando em conta o grupo tendinite (A14), em que valor p>0,05. As análises histológica e histomorfométrica demonstraram qualitativo e quantitativo aumento no número de fibroblastos aos sete dias de tratamento, e das fibras colágenas, aos 14 dias, para grupo tratado com LED de baixa potência em relação ao grupo sadio (C). O mesmo não foi percebido quando relacionado ao grupo tendinite (A14).

Viability of fibroblasts cultured under nutritional stress irradiated with red laser, infrared laser, and red light-emitting diode

Phototherapy is noninvasive, painless and has no known side effect. However, for its incorporation into clinical practice, more well-designed studies are necessary to define optimal parameters for its application. The viability of fibroblasts cultured under nutritional stress irradiated with either a red laser, an infrared laser, or a red light-emitting diode (LED) was analyzed. Irradiation parameters were: red laser (660 nm, 40 mW, 1 W/cm(2)), infrared laser (780 nm, 40 mW, 1 W/cm(2)), and red LED (637 ± 15 nm, 40 mW, 1 W/cm(2)). All applications were punctual and performed with a spot with 0.4 mm(2) of diameter for 4 or 8 s. The Kruskal-Wallis test and analysis of variance of the general linear model (p ≤ 0.05) were used for statistical analysis. After 72 h, phototherapy with low-intensity laser and LED showed no toxicity at the cellular level. It even stimulated methylthiazol tetrazolium assay (MTT) conversion and neutral red uptake of fibroblasts cultured under nutritional stress, especially in the group irradiated with infrared laser (p = 0.004 for MTT conversion and p < 0.001 for neutral red uptake). Considering the parameters and protocol of phototherapy used, it can be concluded that phototherapy stimulated the viability of fibroblasts cultured under nutritional deficit resembling those found in traumatized tissue in which cell viability is reduced.

Effects of low-level laser therapy on collagen expression and neutrophil infiltrate in 5-fluorouracil-induced oral mucositis in hamsters

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Several studies have suggested that low-level laser therapy (LLLT) can ameliorate oral mucositis; however, the mechanisms involved are not well understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanisms of action of LLLT on chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis, as related to effects on collagen expression and inflammation.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A hamster cheek pouch model of oral mucositis was used with all animals receiving intraperitoneal 5-fluorouracil, followed by surface irritation. Animals were randomly allocated into three groups, and treated with an InGaAIP diode laser at a wavelength of 660 nm and output power of 35 or 100 mW laser, or no laser. Clinical severity of mucositis was assessed at four time-points by a blinded examiner. Buccal pouch tissue was harvested from a subgroup of animals in each group at four time-points. Collagen was qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated after picrosirius staining. The density of the neutrophil infiltrate was also scored.

RESULTS

Peak clinical severity of mucositis was reduced in the 35 mW laser group as compared to the 100 mW and control groups. The reduced peak clinical severity of mucositis in the 35 mW laser group was accompanied by a decrease in the number of neutrophils and an increase in the proportion of mature collagen as compared to the other two groups. The total quantity of collagen was significantly higher in the control (no laser) group at the day 11 time-point, as compared to the 35 mW laser group, consistent with a more prolonged inflammatory response in the control group.

CONCLUSION

This study supports two mechanisms of action for LLLT in reducing mucositis severity. The increase in collagen organization in response to the 35 mW laser indicates that LLLT promotes wound healing. In addition, LLLT also appears to have an anti-inflammatory effect, as evidenced by the reduction in neutrophil infiltrate.
