Generalized thermomechanical interaction in two-dimensional skin tissue using eigenvalues approach

The aim of this work is to analytically study the thermo-mechanical response of two-dimensional skin tissues when subjected to instantaneous heating. A complete understanding of the heat transfer process and the associated thermal and mechanical effects on the patient's skin tissues is critical to ensuring the effective applications of thermal therapy techniques and procedures. The surface boundary of the half-space undergoes a heat flux characterized by an exponentially decaying pulse, while maintaining a condition of zero traction. The utilization of Laplace and Fourier transformations is employed, and the resulting formulations are then applied to human tissues undergoing regional hyperthermia treatment for cancer therapy. To perform the inversion process for Laplace and Fourier transforms, a numerical programming method based on Stehfest numerical inverse method is employed. The findings demonstrate that blood perfusion rate and thermal relaxation time significantly influence all the analyzed distributions. Numerical findings suggest that thermo-mechanical waves propagate through skin tissue over finite distances, which helps mitigate the unrealistic predictions made by the Pennes' model.

Influence of thermal relaxation time on thermomechanical interactions in biological tissue during hyperthermia treatment

This study presents an analytical analysis of thermo-mechanical interactions within living tissues using a generalized biothermoelastic model with one thermal relaxation time. Utilizing Laplace transforms and associated techniques, we investigate the response of living tissue to a pulse boundary heat flux that decays exponentially on a traction-free surface. Through detailed graphical illustrations, we elucidate the influence of key parameters such as thermal relaxation time, blood perfusion rate, and the characteristic time of the pulsing heat flux on temperature distribution, displacement, and thermal strain. Our results are presented through comprehensive graphical representations. Furthermore, a parametric analysis is conducted to guide the selection of optimal design factors, enhancing the accuracy of hyperthermia treatments.

Investigation of memory influences on bio-heat responses of skin tissue due to various thermal conditions

Advancement of new technologies such as laser, focused ultrasound, microwave and radio frequency for thermal therapy of skin tissue has increased numerous challenging situations in medical treatment. In this article, a new meticulous bio-heat transfer model based on memory-dependent derivative with dual-phase-lag has been developed under different thermal conditions such as thermal shock and harmonic-type heating. Laplace transform method is acquired to perceive the analytical consequences. Quantitative results are evaluated for displacement, strain and temperature along with stress distributions in time domain by adopting the technique of inverse Laplace transform. Impacts of the constituents of memory-dependent derivatives-kernel functions along with time-delay parameter are analysed on the studied fields (temperature, displacement, strain and stress) for both thermal conditions separately using computational results. It has been found that the insertion of the memory effect proves itself a unified model, and therefore, this model can better predict temperature field data for thermal treatment processes.

Laser tissue soldering of the gastrointestinal tract: A systematic review LTS of the gastrointestinal tract

Background

Laser Tissue Soldering (LTS) is a promising tissue bonding technique in which a solder is applied between the tissues and then irradiated by laser, causing it to solidify and form links with the tissue.

Methods

A comprehensive systematic review summarizing the state of research of LTS in the gastrointestinal tract.

Results

Most studies were conducted on large animal tissues, using liquid proteinaceous solder, and irradiated by a continuous wave laser at 808 nm. LTS can provide better sealing and burst pressure than conventional methods. The application of LTS on top of or in addition to sutures showed an impressive increase in burst pressures. LTS may decrease the inflammatory and foreign body reaction caused by sutures.

Conclusions

LTS has strong potential to be applied in a clinical setting in leak prevention and in closure of gastrointestinal structures as an adjunct or additional anastomotic technology, decreasing leak rates, morbidity, and mortality.

Finite Element Analysis of Nonlinear Bioheat Model in Skin Tissue Due to External Thermal Sources

In this work, numerical estimations of a nonlinear hyperbolic bioheat equation under various boundary conditions for medicinal treatments of tumor cells are constructed. The heating source components in a nonlinear hyperbolic bioheat transfer model, such as the rate of blood perfusions and the metabolic heating generations, are considered experimentally temperature-dependent functions. Due to the nonlinearity of the governing relations, the finite element method is adopted to solve such a problem. The results for temperature are presented graphically. Parametric analysis is then performed to identify an appropriate procedure to select significant design variables in order to yield further accuracy to achieve efficient thermal power in hyperthermia treatments.

Analytical Estimation of Temperature in Living Tissues Using the TPL Bioheat Model with Experimental Verification

The aim of this study is to propose the analytical method associated with Laplace transforms and experimental verification to estimate thermal damages and temperature due to laser irradiation by utilizing measurement information of skin surface. The thermal damages to the tissues are totally estimated by denatured protein ranges using the formulations of Arrhenius. By using Laplace transformations, the exact solution of all physical variables is obtained. Numerical results for the temperature and thermal damage are presented graphically. Furthermore, the comparisons between the numerical calculations with experimental verification show that the three-phase lag bioheat mathematical model is an efficient tool for estimating the bioheat transfer in skin tissue.

The Effect of Fractional Time Derivative of Bioheat Model in Skin Tissue Induced to Laser Irradiation

This work uses the “fractional order bio-heat model” (Fob) model of heat conduction to offer a new interpretation to study the thermal damages in a skin tissue caused by laser irradiation. The influences of fractional order and the thermal relaxation time parameters on the temperature of skin tissue and the resulting thermal damage are studied. In the Laplace domain, the analytical solutions of temperature are obtained. Using the equation of Arrhenius, the resulting thermal injury to the tissues is assessed by the denatured protein ranges. The numerical results of the thermal damages and temperature are presented graphically. A parametric analysis is dedicated to the identifications of suitable procedures for the selection of significant design variables to achieve an effective thermal in the therapy of hyperthermia.

Thermal damage in three-dimensional vivo bio-tissues induced by moving heat sources in laser therapy

The thermal damage of a three-dimensional bio-tissue model irradiated by a movable laser beam was studied in this work. By employing the DPL biological heat conduction model and Henriques' thermal damage assessment model, the distribution of burn damage of vivo human tissue during laser therapy was analytically obtained. The influences of laser moving velocity, laser spot size, phase lags of heat flux and temperature gradient were discussed. It was found that the laser moving speed and the laser spot size greatly influence the thermal damage degree by affecting the energy concentration degree. The increases of the laser moving speed and laser spot size can enlarge the irradiated region and reduce the burn degree. A greater phase lag of temperature gradient led to lower accumulation of thermal energy and lower burn degree. However, the increment of heat flux phase lag leads to the thermal energy accumulation and more serious burn degree in the irradiated region.

Robot-assisted laser tissue soldering system

Fast and reliable incision closure is critical in any surgical intervention. Common solutions are sutures and clips or adhesives, but they all present difficulties. These difficulties are especially pronounced in classical and robot-assisted minimally-invasive interventions. Laser soldering methods present a promising alternative, but their reproducibility is limited. We present a system that combines a previously reported laser soldering system with a robotic system, and demonstrate its feasibility on the incision-closure of ex-vivo mice skins. In this demonstration, we measured tearing forces of ~2.5N, 73% of the tearing force of a mouse skin without an incision. This robot-assisted laser soldering technique has the potential to make laser tissue soldering more reproducible and revolutionize surgical tissue bonding.

Silver halide single-mode strip waveguides for the mid-infrared

We report the demonstration of single-mode AgCl(x)Br(1-x) strip waveguides for the mid-infrared (MIR). The waveguides were made by the deposition of AgCl(x)Br(1-x) layers on top of a Si-SiO(2) substrate, followed by photolithographic and lift-off processing. The propagation losses of 20 dB/cm were measured at λ=10.6 μm using the cut-back method. The development of these waveguides is a crucial step toward realizing AgCl(x)Br(1-x) MIR integrated optical circuits, which would be used for applications such as chemical sensing and stellar interferometry.
