Abstract
This review aims to assess the efficacy and safety of laser therapy in managing scars resulting from cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) repair surgeries, as well as to determine the optimal timing for intervention. A systematic search was conducted across four databases using a predefined search strategy. Studies included were randomized controlled trials, non-randomized studies, and case series focusing on laser therapy for CL/P scars. Data extraction and analysis were performed using Revman Software. A total of two randomized controlled trials, four non-randomized studies, and three case series were included in the analysis. The fractional CO2 laser was the most commonly utilized type of laser. Following laser therapy, there was a significant decrease in Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) scores by 4.05 (95% CI, 2.10-5.99). Meta-analysis revealed that laser treatment groups exhibited a significantly lower mean VSS score (1.3; 95% CI, 0.02-2.67) compared to control groups. Moreover, initiating laser therapy intervention at one month postoperatively resulted in a significantly lower VSS score compared to initiation at three months postoperatively (difference of 1.70; 95% CI, 1.33-2.08). No severe complications were reported. Laser therapy demonstrates effectiveness and safety in improving CL/P scars, with earlier intervention yielding greater benefits.

Abstract
Skin diseases pose challenges in treatment due to the skin's complex structure and protective functions. Topical drug delivery has emerged as a preferred method for treating these conditions, offering localized therapy with minimal systemic side effects. However, the skin's barrier properties frequently limit topical treatments' efficacy by preventing drug penetration into deeper skin layers. In recent years, laser-assisted drug delivery (LADD) has gained attention as a promising strategy to overcome these limitations. LADD involves using lasers to create microchannels in the skin, facilitating the deposition of drugs and enhancing their penetration into the target tissue. Several lasers, such as fractional CO2, have been tested to see how well they work at delivering drugs. Despite the promising outcomes demonstrated in preclinical and clinical studies, several challenges persist in implementing LADD, including limited penetration depth, potential tissue damage, and the cost of LADD systems. Furthermore, selecting appropriate laser parameters and drug formulations is crucial to ensuring optimal therapeutic outcomes. Nevertheless, LADD holds significant potential for improving treatment efficacy for various skin conditions, including skin cancers, scars, and dermatological disorders. Future research efforts should focus on optimizing LADD techniques, addressing safety concerns, and exploring novel drug formulations to maximize the therapeutic benefits of this innovative approach. With continued advancements in laser technology and pharmaceutical science, LADD has the potential to revolutionize the field of dermatology and enhance patient care.

Abstract
Low back pain affects over 20% of individuals during their lifetime, and in some patients, it may be associated with scar tissue formation after surgery. Small-fiber neuropathy and scar tissue dysfunction can lead to localized pain by affecting signals to the thalamus. Transcutaneous neuromodulation using Tape with Magnetic Particles shows promise in relieving perceived pain, modulating vascularization and the autonomic nervous system, and reducing dermal temperature. In the present case, a 24-year-old woman with L5-S1 disk herniation experienced low back pain and leg pressure. The surgical intervention provided temporary relief, but scar restrictions caused pain recurrence. Tape with Magnetic Particles application initially induced scar hypothermia and pressure tolerance during posteroanterior tests on lumbar spinous processes increased, reducing pain perception for at least 12 h. Transcutaneous neuromodulation with Tape with Magnetic Particles modulated dermal temperature immediately and for 12 h, reducing perceived pain and sustaining improvement thereafter. This highlights the potential of Tape with Magnetic Particles in managing chronic low back pain associated with scar tissue.

Abstract
Burn injuries remain a significant source of trauma in the United States and disproportionately affect racial and ethnic minorities. Although disparities are well documented in adults, less is known regarding those in pediatric populations. To address this gap in literature, we aim to better characterize burn injuries, inpatient treatments, and post-discharge outcomes in minority pediatric burn patients. We hypothesize minority patients undergo more surgery and re-admissions than non-minority patients for burn care. This is a single institution retrospective chart review of pediatric patient admissions with burn injuries from July 1st, 2016 to July 1st, 2021. Demographics, details of injury, inpatient surgical and non-surgical care, and post-discharge outcomes were collected. Patients identifying as Hispanic/Latino, Black, and Asian were coded as minority patients. Univariate analysis was utilized. A total of 332 patients with average age of 4.9 years (SD: 4.4) and average total burn surface area (TBSA) of 8.5% (SD: 10.0) were collected. Minority patients were significantly more likely to experience accidental burn injury (p < 0.01), inhalational injury (p < 0.01), surgical management (p < 0.01), and to undergo skin graft (p < 0.01) than White patients. Minority patients were significantly more likely to undergo laser treatment after discharge (p < 0.01) than White patients. Our study shows minority pediatric patients are at risk for non-intentional burn injuries that undergo surgical management such as skin grafting and longitudinal reconstructive procedures including laser therapy more often. Short-term goals should include facilitating improved physical and psychosocial outcomes in this often-underserved patient population.

Abstract
The morphology of facial scars shows a wide variation in terms of texture and colour. To date, there are no reliable predictors of aberrant scarring. We conducted a retrospective analysis to identify factors associated with specific scar features and types. Photographs and medical records of 428 patients with facial scars were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with keloids were excluded. The mean age of the patients was 45.43 ± 23.13 years with a male-to-female ratio of 1:1.36. Atrophic scars were the most common (42.8%), followed by flat scars (38.7%) and hypertrophic scars (18.5%). Scars on the forehead were more likely to be atrophic, whereas scars on the chin/jaw and around the mouth were more likely to be hypertrophic. Hypopigmentation was significantly more common in scars located on the forehead. Redness (erythema) was significantly more common in scars located on the chin/jaw. Old scars were less likely to be erythematous, and hypertrophic. Atrophic scars were more common in younger patients. Scars caused by dermatologic conditions, such as acne, were more likely to be atrophic, whereas surgical scars had the lowest risk of being atrophic or hypertrophic. In conclusion, the location, onset, and cause of facial scars were associated with specific features of scars.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate and explore the efficacy of CO2 fractional laser in treating post-burn hypertrophic scars in children through Meta-analysis. METHODS English databases (PubMed, Web of Science and The National Library of Medicine), as well as Chinese databases (China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Wanfang Data) were searched. RevMan 5.3 software was used to data analysis. RESULTS A total of 10 pieces of literature were included, involving 413 children. Meta-analysis showed that: (1) The average Vancouver Scar Scale after surgery was significantly lower than that before surgery [weight mean difference (WMD) = -3.56, 95% confidence interval (CI):-4.53,-2.58, p < 0.001]; (2) After CO2 fractional laser, pigmentation [WMD = -0.74, 95% CI:-1.10,-0.38, p < 0.001], pliability [WMD = -0.92, 95% CI:-1.20,-0.65, p < 0.001], vascularity [WMD = -0.77, 95% CI:-1.09,-0.46, p < 0.001], height [WMD = -0.57, 95% CI:-0.95,-0.19, p < 0.001] were improved compared with those before surgery. (3) The average Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) after surgery was significantly lower than that before surgery [WMD = -3.94, 95% CI:-5.69,-2.22, p < 0.001]. (4) Both Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS)-Observer [WMD = -3.98, 95% CI:-8.44,0.47, p < 0.001] and POSAS-Patient [WMD = -4.98, 95% CI:-8.09,-1.87, p < 0.001] were significantly lower than those before surgery. (5) Erythema and vesicles were the most common complications after CO2 fractional laser therapy, with an incidence of 4.09%. CONCLUSION CO2 fractional laser is beneficial to the recovery of hypertrophic scar after burn in children, and can effectively improve the scar symptoms and signs in children, with desirable clinical efficacy.

Abstract
ABSTRACT In case of excision of nasal basal cell carcinoma (BCC), bilobed flaps are considered the criterion standard of reconstruction for defect less than 15 mm in size. However, there is still a risk of trapdoor deformity formation, of which its treatment is less discussed. A 44-year-old woman who was diagnosed with nasal BCC and underwent tumor excision with bilobed flap reconstruction presented with trapdoor deformity postoperatively. The computed Vancouver Scar Scale was 7. After early intervention of multiple laser modalities, including 2 sessions of 585-nm pulsed dye laser with a fluence of 9 J/cm2, pulse duration of 6 milliseconds, and spot size of 6 mm, 2940-nm Er-yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) laser with a pulse energy of 800-900 mJ, repetition rate of 8-9 Hz, and laser spot size of 3-7 mm, and 5 sessions of 1064-nm Nd:YAG fractional picosecond laser with a pulse energy of 2.30-2.70 mJ, repetition rate of 8 Hz, and laser spot size of 6 mm from 5 to 23 weeks postoperatively, the Vancouver Scar Scale score improved to 1, with significant reduction of trapdoor scar erythema and puffiness. Although BCC is often curable, tumor excision causes unsatisfactory appearance satisfaction problem, owing to the apparent location of the lesion. Factors, such as sebaceous tissue thickness, reconstruction over multiple aesthetic subunits of nose, and damage to nasal cartilage framework structure during tumor removal, may increase the risk of trapdoor formation. Early intervention with multiple laser treatment can significantly revise the deformity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although different options are available for treating post-traumatic facial scars, they remain a therapeutic challenge. AIM To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of combined therapy using micro-plasma radiofrequency (MPRF) technology and silicone gel (SG) dressings for treating post-traumatic facial scars. METHODS This retrospective study was conducted at a single center. Patients with facial injuries in the outpatient and emergency units of the Department of Plastic Surgery at our hospital underwent debridement and cosmetic sutures performed by the same surgeon from October 2020 to October 2021. In the first arm, patients with facial injuries were treated with MPRF technology and SG, and in the second arm, they were treated with SG dressings alone. We observed the safety and effectiveness of these treatments in both arms. RESULTS A total of 32 patients with facial injuries were treated with MPRF technology and SG dressings (combined treatment group), and 28 patients were treated with SG dressings alone (SG group). After 6 months of treatment, the Vancouver Scar Scale scores of the combined treatment and SG groups were 1.38 ± 0.71 and 4.39 ± 0.50, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.01). After 6 months of treatment, the effectiveness rate in the combined treatment group was 93.8%, which was significantly higher than that in the SG group (67.9%), and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P < 0.05). No obvious adverse reactions occurred in the two arms. CONCLUSION Treating early post-traumatic facial scars with combined MPRF technology and SG is significantly better than treating them with SG alone; moreover, the combined therapy is safe and effective.

Abstract
To achieve the painless administration of interferon alpha 1b (rhIFNα-1b), a double-layered soluble polymer microneedle (MN) patch loaded with rhIFNα-1b was used to deliver rhIFNα-1b transdermally. The solution containing rhIFNα-1b was concentrated in the MN tips under negative pressure. The MNs punctured the skin and delivered rhIFNα-1b to the epidermis and dermis. The MN tips implanted in the skin dissolved within 30 min and gradually released rhIFNα-1b. The rhIFNα-1b had a significant inhibitory effect on the abnormal proliferation of fibroblasts and excessive deposition of collagen fibers in the scar tissue. The color and thickness of the scar tissue treated using the MN patches loaded with rhIFNα-1b were effectively reduced. The relative expressions of type I collagen (Collagen I), type III collagen (Collagen III), transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1), and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) were significantly downregulated in scar tissues. In summary, the MN patch loaded with rhIFNα-1b provided an effective method for the transdermal delivery of rhIFNα-1b.

Abstract
Wound healing (WH) is a complex multistep process in which a failure could lead to a chronic wound (CW). CW is a major health problem and includes leg venous ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, and pressure ulcers. CW is difficult to treat and affects vulnerable and pluripathological patients. On the other hand, excessive scarring leads to keloids and hypertrophic scars causing disfiguration and sometimes itchiness and pain. Treatment of WH includes the cleaning and careful handling of injured tissue, early treatment and prevention of infection, and promotion of healing. Treatment of underlying conditions and the use of special dressings promote healing. The patient at risk and risk areas should avoid injury as much as possible. This review aims to summarize the role of physical therapies as complementary treatments in WH and scarring. The article proposes a translational view, opening the opportunity to develop these therapies in an optimal way in clinical management, as many of them are emerging. The role of laser, photobiomodulation, photodynamic therapy, electrical stimulation, ultrasound therapy, and others are highlighted in a practical and comprehensive approach.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The skin is a protective barrier of the body against external factors, and its damage leads to a loss of integrity. Normal wound healing results in a correct, flat, bright, and flexible scar. Initial skin damage and patient specific factors in wound healing contribute that many of these scars may progress into widespread or pathologic hypertrophic and keloid scars. The changes in cosmetic appearance, continuing pain, and loss of movement due to contracture or adhesion and persistent pruritis can significantly affect an individual's quality of life and psychological recovery post injury. Many different treatment methods can reduce the trauma and surgical scars. Manual scar treatment includes various techniques of therapy. The most effectiveness is a combined therapy, which has a multidirectional impact. Clinical observations show an effectiveness of manual scar therapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS The aim of this work was to evaluate effectiveness of the scar manual therapy combined with complementary methods on the postoperative scars. Treatment protocol included two therapies during 30 min per week for 8 weeks. Therapy included manual scar manipulation, massage, cupping, dry needling, and taping. RESULTS Treatment had a significant positive effect to influence pain, pigmentation, pliability, pruritus, surface area, and scar stiffness. Improvement of skin parameters (scar elasticity, thickness, regularity, color) was also noticed. CONCLUSION To investigate the most effective manual therapy strategy, further studies are needed, evaluating comparisons of different individual and combined scar therapy modalities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Surgical scars seriously affect a patient's quality of life, and they have a strong impact on individuals. Many studies have reported the results of using fractional carbon dioxide (CO2) laser to treat surgical scars and have generally found it to be effective. OBJECTIVES We conducted a meta-analysis with the objective of evaluating and proving the efficacy of fractional CO2 laser therapy for surgical scars. METHODS We performed a search of databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and the Cochrane Library. The outcomes of the meta-analysis were overall scores on the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) and its four dimensions (pigmentation, vascularity, pliability and height). Statistical analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4 software. RESULTS A total of ten studies were included in this meta-analysis, including six randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and four nonrandomized controlled trials (N-RCTs). In the meta-analysis of RCTs and N-RCTs, similar results were obtained, and fractional CO2 laser irradiation significantly decreased VSS scores (P < 0.00001). In addition, fractional CO2 laser irradiation also had a significant effect on scores on the pigmentation (P = 0.08), vascularity (P = 0.001), flexibility (P = 0.005) and height (P = 0.008) dimensions. Except for mild pain during treatment and temporary erythema after treatment, most patients had no obvious adverse reactions. CONCLUSION Our study found that fractional CO2 laser exhibits excellent efficacy and safety in terms of surgical scar treatment. Thus, we hope it becomes more widely available to patients with surgical scars. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE III This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. Abstract
BACKGROUND The Fraxel Dual laser system (Solta Medical, Inc., Bothell, WA) contains a 1,550 and 1,927 nm wavelength single handpiece with different indications for each wavelength. OBJECTIVE To discuss treatment setting recommendations and best practices for select on-label and investigational applications of the 1,550 and 1,927 nm dual laser system. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eight board-certified dermatologists with 10 or more years of experience with the 1,550 and 1,927 nm laser system completed an online survey about their clinical experience with the system and then participated in a roundtable to share clinical perspectives and best practices for using the laser system. RESULTS For all Fitzpatrick skin types, treatment recommendations were described for selected approved indications for the 1,550 and 1,927 nm laser system, including both lasers in combination. Treatment recommendations were also reached for investigational applications with the 1,550 nm laser and 1,927 nm laser. Best practices for using the lasers during the treatment session to achieve optimal outcomes and decrease the post-treatment recovery time were compiled. CONCLUSION The 1,550 and 1,927 nm dual laser system is effective for a wide range of aesthetic and therapeutic applications, on and off the face and across all Fitzpatrick skin types.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite history of multiple treatment modalities, repigmentation of hypopigmented scars remains a difficult clinical problem. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this review is to evaluate the literature on laser and combination laser plus adjunct topical therapy for hypopigmented burn and traumatic scars. MATERIALS AND METHODS A search on PubMed and on Oxford Academic was conducted with additional relevant literature obtained from reference lists. RESULTS Treatment regimens that address hypopigmentation within scars were reviewed. A combination of nonablative fractional or ablative fractional laser treatment with topical prostaglandin analogue with or without topical retinoid were found to result in superior repigmentation. CONCLUSION Reliable improvement of hypopigmentation in scars after laser treatment is challenging. Laser can achieve success in some cases. Ultraviolet laser can achieve modest repigmentation; however, results are short-lived and require continued re-treatment. Modest improvement in pigmentation is seen with nonablative fractional laser or ablative fractional laser alone and enhanced repigmentation is demonstrated when combining fractional laser resurfacing with topical application of synthetic prostaglandin analogues and other known modulators of melanogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequent cutaneous cancer worldwide, and the nasal area is the most commonly affected region. Skin flaps are usually performed to achieve radical results, but various adverse events often occur. The necrosis of the skin flap is one of the most frequently observed, resulting in scars and anti-aesthetic outcomes. Ablative and non-ablative lasers have been proposed to improve scars resulting from surgical failure and skin flap necrosis. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS This study aims to evaluate a new laser protocol combining ablative CO2 -laser with flashlamp pulsed dye laser for the treatment of nasal scars resulting from the necrosis of flap that occurred after surgery. Twelve patients were enrolled in the study, and a total of five laser sessions were planned, spaced from 14 days to 1 month apart. RESULTS Seven out of 12 patients underwent all the five laser sessions planned, while 5/12 patients achieved optimal cosmetic results within the fourth session. Eighty percent of the patients reported good/optimal cosmetic results, and no significant side effects were observed during the study. CONCLUSION Combining fractionated CO2 laser with flashlamp pulsed dye laser represents a new effective modality for treating skin flap necrosis after BBC removal, representing a valid alternative to other surgical procedures.

Abstract
Background/purpose As an extraction wound closes, the mucosal epithelium of the tooth extraction wound impedes the space for new bone formation by invading into the extraction socket. Thus, the height of the alveolar crest decreases, causing significant depression of the alveolar mucosa. In this study, we created a rat tooth extraction model and examined the effects of laser irradiation by CO2 and diode on the dynamics of myofibroblast expression through α-SMA, and TGF-β1. Materials and methods After tooth extraction of five-week-old male Wistar rats, they were divided into two laser treatment groups (CO2 laser or diode laser was irradiated into tooth extraction socket) and non-laser treatment group (control group). Surrounding tissues, including the extraction socket, were removed at 3, 5, 7, and 21 days after tooth extraction and the expression of α-SMA and TGF-β1 was verified using immunohistological techniques (6 animals in each group and each period, 72 animals in total). Results α-SMA-positive cells and TGF-β1-positive areas were significantly lower in the two laser treatment groups than in the control group. Particularly, the diode group almost had no TGF-β1-positive areas on the 21st day when healing after tooth extraction was deemed to be completed. Conclusion Both CO2 and diode laser irradiation of tooth extraction wounds decreases α-SMA-positive cells and TGF-β1-positive areas. Further, it causes a decrease in myofibroblast expression and suppresses the invasion of mucosal epithelium into the extraction socket. Therefore, laser irradiation may exert a space-making effect for new bone formation and also contribute to socket preservation.

Abstract
The main therapeutic options for extensive scarring (e.g., > 20% of the total body surface area, or TBSA) after burns and trauma have focused on conservative treatments, such as compression, moisturization, and topical agent application. However, these treatments may not achieve optimal effects due to the large size and complexity of the scars. UltraPulse fractional CO2 laser treatment is a novel approach that is currently a subject of intense interest; this treatment is most widely used to improve texture, pliability, and pigmentation in all types of scars. However, no studies on the independent use of UltraPulse fractional CO2 laser treatment for extensive scars have been reported. This retrospective study evaluated a total of 21 patients, whose scars covered 20 to 65% TBSA. Scar thickness was measured by ultrasonography before treatment. Personalized treatment modalities and parameters were set according to the scar type and thickness. Scar formation and treatment effects were evaluated by photography, the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS), and patients’ judgment of effectiveness. Where the scars covered joints, joint function was assessed by measuring the maximum range of motion (ROM). With laser therapy, scars became flatter and lighter; furthermore, pruritus, pain, and discomfort decreased significantly. POSAS scores significantly decreased after laser therapy, including the item scores for pain and pruritus. There were no instances of joint contracture, ROM reduction, apparent functional impairment, serious adverse events, or comorbidities. This study demonstrates the safety and efficiency of UltraPulse fractional CO2 laser treatment for extensive scarring.

Abstract
Epidermal nevi (EN) are cutaneous hamartomas present at birth, usually occurs in the trunk, the face, or the limbs, appearing as a patch of overgrowing skin. They may be small and localized, but they may interest extensive areas of the body. A 20 years old man came to our attention for an EN interesting all the face. The treatment protocol consisted of a session of CO2 laser in order to vaporize thicker areas, followed by a session of dye laser on the area to prevent scarring. This treatment was performed under local anesthesia and sedation in three surgical sessions spaced 3 months from each other. Two sessions of dye laser spaced apart 6 months were performed during follow-up to further improve the esthetic outcome. The patient was followed for 2 years with no recurrence. Although surgery is still considered the gold standard in EN management, it is not always feasible. This novel combination technique can obtain optimal cosmetic results with no relapse within the period of follow up. Although further trials on a more significant number of patients are required, the combination of CO2 and dye laser promises to become a valid therapeutic alternative when treating giant EN of the face.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Recently, there have been several attempts to apply the laser therapy to hypertrophic scars (HTS). In particular, the fractional laser is in the spotlight for its usefulness in rapid wound healing and dermal remodeling. However, most previous studies have focused on the ablative fractional laser (AFL), and there are no studies on the mechanism of the nonablative fractional laser (NAFL) effect in HTS treatment. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the changes in histology and molecular chemistry to provide scientific evidence for the early treatment of HTS with NAFL. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 40 hypertrophic burn scars were made on the abdomens of two female pigs. After epithelialization, the HTS were randomly subdivided into four groups-control, AFL, NAFL (low energy), and NAFL (high energy). Laser treatment was initiated 1 week after the crust fell and the epithelium became covered, and it was repeated for six sessions over an interval of 2 weeks. Five excisional biopsies were obtained for histologic analysis and biomarker assessment. RESULTS Histologically, dermal remodeling with thin coil-shaped collagen fibers was observed in the NAFL groups. It also showed a significant increase of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and Decorin at 16 weeks in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction analysis showed a tendency that high-pulse energy of NAFL led to higher messenger RNA expression than did the low-energy group. CONCLUSION The NAFL-treated groups showed characteristic collagen re-arrangement and a significant increase in MMP-2 and Decorin. These molecular changes suggest that MMP-2 and Decorin play a significant role in dermal remodeling. Early NAFL treatment for HTS could be supported with both histological and molecular evidence. Abstract
Laser (light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation) skin resurfacing is currently one of the most widely adopted technologies in facial rejuvenation. While most often used for aesthetic purposes, lasers also have applications in the management of scars. Since the introduction of the CO2 laser for skin rejuvenation in the 1990s, the last three decades have seen significant growth in the number of laser devices available to the physician. More recently, promising alternatives to light-based resurfacing technologies have emerged that include radiofrequency and intense focused ultrasound. To help the physician navigate the most current laser technologies as they apply to periocular scars, this review discusses the available treatment modalities, pre-treatment assessment of periorbital scars, treatment selection, and reported outcomes and complications. The recommendations described herein are based on published literature and the authors' experience in an academic oculoplastics practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES There has been reports on fractional CO2 laser successfully improving contracture scars that impair the function of a joint. It seems that certain contracture problems could be solved by laser instead of surgery. However, the clinical application could be difficult when the efficacy of the method remains unknown. The purpose of this study is to report the releasing capacity of the fractional CO2 laser on contracture scars based on a defined treatment method. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted a retrospective study in patients with limited function in joints caused by contracture scars. Fractional CO2 laser and our "3D mesh releasing" protocol were applied. The primary outcome was the improvement measured in range of motion (ROM) of the relevant joint before all intervention and 6 months after the last treatment. RESULT From November 2016 to January 2018, 11 joints of 10 cases were treated by the fractional CO2 laser. Patients went through 2.27 (standard deviation [SD] 1.42, 1-5) sessions. The average progress of ROM before and 6 months after all treatments was 19.13° (SD 10.25, P < 0.02). In six cases, we recorded that there was an 8.53° (SD 5.81, P < 0.02) of increase in ROM immediately after the laser session, and the average improvement reached up to 13.58° (SD 8.15, P < 0.02) after 2-3 months during the next follow-up. CONCLUSION The fractional CO2 laser could achieve functional improvement in contracture scars and it maintained its effect for at least 6 months. The "3D Mesh Releasing" protocol would help to standardize the treatment procedure. This modality has minimal-invasiveness and potentially could become a supplement to the current treatment choices for mild contracture scars. Lasers Surg. Med. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals LLC.
