Abstract
This work provides a summary of the preparation, structure, reactivity, physicochemical properties, and main uses of 1,2,5-thiadiazole 1,1-dioxides in chemistry and material sciences. An overview of all currently known structures containing the 1,2,5-thiadiazole 1,1-dioxide motif (including the anions radical species) is provided according to the Cambridge Structural Database search. The analysis of the bond lengths typical for neutral and anion radical species is performed, providing a useful tool for unambiguous assessment of the valence state of the dioxothiadiazole-based compounds based solely on the structural data. Theoretical methodologies used in the literature to describe the dioxothiadiazoles are also shortly discussed, together with the typical 'fingerprint' of the dioxothiadiazole ring reported by means of various spectroscopic techniques (NMR, IR, UV-Vis). The second part describes the synthetic strategies leading to 1,2,5-thiadiazole 1,1-dioxides followed by the discussion of their electrochemistry and reactivity including mainly the chemical methods for the successful reduction of dioxothiadiazoles to their anion radical forms and the ability to form coordination compounds. Finally, the magnetic properties of dioxothiadiazole radical anions and the metal complexes involving dioxothiadiazoles as ligands are discussed, including simple alkali metal salts and d-block coordination compounds. The last section is a prospect of other uses of dioxothiadiazole-containing molecules reported in the literature followed by the perspectives and possible future research directions involving these compounds.

Abstract
Fullerene extracts obtained from fullerene soot lack their real application due to their poor solubility in common solvents and difficulty in purification. Encapsulation of these extracts in a suitable host is an important approach to address these issues. We present a new Pd6 barrel (1), which is composed of three 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole panels, clipped through six cis-PdII acceptors. Large open windows and cavity make it an efficient host for a large guest. Favorable interactions between the ligand and fullerene (C60 and C70 ) allows the barrel to encapsulate fullerene efficiently. Thorough investigation reveals that barrel 1 has a stronger binding affinity towards C70 over C60 , resulting in the predominant extraction of C70 from a mixture of the two. Finally, the fullerene encapsulated barrels C60 ⊂1 and C70 ⊂1 were found to be efficient for visible-light-induced singlet oxygen generation. Such preferential binding of C70 and photosensitizing ability of C60 ⊂1 and C70 ⊂1 are noteworthy.

Abstract
Two new 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole based aggregation induced emission (AIE)-inactive di- and tetra-imidazolium salts were employed with Ag(i) for the synthesis of a Ag-carbene bond directed metallacycle (1) and metallacage (2), respectively. Transmetalation of these complexes allowed their facile conversion to their respective Au(i)-metallacycle (3) and metallacage (4). The final assemblies exhibit linkage induced enhancement of fluorescence (LIEF). The free ligands are almost non-fluorescent (ΦF = 3.2, 3.4) in comparison to their metal-carbene counterparts (ΦF up to 32.0). Thus, without using any AIEgen, obtaining high emission efficiencies in complexes AgI-CNHC (1, 2) via linkage is a nice approach towards turn-on fluorescence.

Abstract
Thiophene-based π-conjugated organic small molecules and polymers are the research subject of significant current interest owing to their potential use as organic semiconductors in material chemistry. Despite simple and similar molecular structures, the hitherto reported properties of thiophene-based organic semiconductors are rather diverse. Design of high performance organic semiconducting materials requires a thorough understanding of inter- and intra-molecular interactions, solid-state packing, and the influence of both factors on the charge carrier transport. In this chapter, thiophene-based organic semiconductors, which are classified in terms of their chemical structures and their structure-property relationships, are addressed for the potential applications as organic photovoltaics (OPVs), organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs).

Abstract
We report on the improvement of long-term stability of organic solar cells (OPV) using hindered phenol based antioxidants as stabilizing additives. A set of seven commercially available hindered phenols are investigated for use in bulk-heterojunction OPV. Polymer:fullerene films based on poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) are characterized with respect to the initial power conversion efficiency and the long-term stability improvement under illumination in ambient conditions. FTIR spectroscopy is used to trace chemical degradation over time. OPV performance is recorded under ISOS-3 conditions, and an improved long-term performance of OPV devices, manifested in increased accumulated power generation (APG), is found for octadecyl 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propionate. Using this additive, APG is increased by a factor of 3 compared to the reference. Observed differences in the stabilization of tested additives are discussed in terms of energetic trap states formation within the HOMO/LUMO gap of the photoactive material, morphological changes, and chemical structure.

Abstract
Previously unknown ladder-type heteroacenes were synthesized in just two steps from aromatic amines, 2-nitrobenzaldehydes, and biacetyl. A recently discovered multicomponent process affording 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles was followed by the Cadogan reaction, which resulted in simultaneous closure of two additional pyrrole rings. Rod-like compounds synthesized in this way were stable in the absence of light, and they were transformed into bis(tert-butoxycarbonyl) derivatives. The rigid herringbone-like structure resulted in a strong absorption in the λ=350-410 nm region and very strong violet and blue emission, which was bathochromically shifted relative to the emission of the parent 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles. The optical properties of these compounds strongly suggest that the conjugation spanned the entire π system. The HOMO energy level was located at -4.6 to -5.1 eV.

Abstract
Efficient conditions for the synthesis of tetra-, penta-, and hexasubstituted derivatives of 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole were developed. The tetraaryl derivatives were obtained in a novel one-pot reaction among aromatic aldehydes, aromatic amines, and butane-2,3-dione. After a thorough examination of various reaction parameters (solvent, acid, temperature) p-toluenesulfonic acid was identified as the crucial catalyst. As a result, 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles were obtained in the highest yields reported to date. The scope and limitation studies showed that this new method was particularly efficient for sterically hindered aldehydes (yields 45-49%). Pentaaryl- and hexaaryl-1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles were prepared from tetraaryl-1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles via direct arylation by employing both electron-poor and electron-rich aromatic and heteroaromatic haloarenes. Strategic placement of electron-withdrawing substituents at the 2-, 3-, 5-, and 6-positions produced an acceptor-donor-acceptor type fluorophore. The resulting multiply substituted heteropentalenes displayed intriguing optical properties. The relationship between the structure and photophysical properties for all compounds were directly compared and thoroughly elucidated. All synthesized products displayed strong blue fluorescence and exhibited moderate to large Stokes shifts (3000-7300 cm(-1)) as well as high quantum yields of fluorescence up to 88%. Two-photon absorption cross-section values measured in the near-IR region were surprisingly high (hundreds of GM), given the limited conjugation in these propeller-shaped dyes.

Abstract
Over the past two decades, organic semiconductors have been the subject of intensive academic and commercial interests. Thiazole is a common electron-accepting heterocycle due to electron-withdrawing nitrogen of imine (C=N), several moieties based on thiazole have been widely introduced into organic semiconductors, and yielded high performance in organic electronic devices. This article reviews recent developments in the area of thiazole-based organic semiconductors, particularly thiazole, bithiazole, thiazolothiazole and benzobisthiazole-based small molecules and polymers, for applications in organic field-effect transistors, solar cells and light-emitting diodes. The remaining problems and challenges, and the key research direction in near future are discussed.
