Terpyridine Glycoconjugates and Their Metal Complexes: Antiproliferative Activity and Proteasome Inhibition

Metal terpyridine complexes have gained substantial interest in many application fields, such as catalysis and supramolecular chemistry. In recent years, the biological activity of terpyridine and its metal complexes has aroused considerable regard. On this basis, we synthesised new terpyridine derivatives of trehalose and glucose to improve the water solubility of terpyridine ligands and target them in cancer cells through glucose transporters. Glucose derivative and its copper(II) and iron(II) complexes showed antiproliferative activity. Interestingly, trehalose residue reduced the cytotoxicity of terpyridine. Moreover, we tested the ability of parent terpyridine ligands and their copper complexes to inhibit proteasome activity as an antineoplastic mechanism.

Recent progress in electrochromic energy storage materials and devices: a minireview

Integration of several functionalities into one isolated electrochemical body is necessary to realize compact and tiny smart electronics. Recently, two different technologies, electrochromic (EC) materials and energy storage, were combined to create a single system that supports and drives both functions simultaneously. In EC energy storage devices, the characteristic feature of EC materials, their optical modulation depending on the applied voltage, is used to visually identify the stored energy level in real time. Moreover, combining energy-harvesting and EC storage systems by sharing one electrode facilitates the realization of further compact multifunction systems. In this minireview, we highlight recent groundbreaking achievements in EC multifunction systems where the stored energy levels can be visualized using the color of the device.

Toward Electrochromic Metallopolymers: Synthesis and Properties of Polyazomethines Based on Complexes of Transition-Metal Ions

The tridentate ligand L and its complexes with transition-metal ions have been prepared and characterized. The polycondensation reactions of transition-metal complexes with different dialdehydes led to the formation of transition-metal-complex-based polyazomethines, which have been obtained by on-substrate polymerization, and their electrochemical and electrochromic performance have been investigated. The most interesting properties are exhibited by polymers of Fe(II) and Cu(II) ions obtained by the reaction of the appropriate complexes with a triphenylamine-based dialdehyde. Fe(II) polymer P1 undergoes a reversible oxidation/reduction process and a color change from orange to gray due to the oxidation of Fe(II) to Fe(III) ions concomitant with the oxidation of the triphenylamine group. Its electrochromic properties such as long-term stability, switching times, and coloration efficiencies have been investigated, providing evidence of the utility of the on-substrate polycondensation reaction in the formation of thin films of electrochromic metallopolymers.

Organic Thermoelectric Multilayers with High Stretchiness

A stretchable organic thermoelectric multilayer is achieved by alternately depositing bilayers (BL) of 0.1 wt% polyethylene oxide (PEO) and 0.03 wt% double walled carbon nanotubes (DWNT), dispersed with 0.1 wt% polyacrylic acid (PAA), by the layer-by-layer assembly technique. A 25 BL thin film (~500 nm thick), composed of a PEO/DWNT-PAA sequence, displays electrical conductivity of 19.6 S/cm and a Seebeck coefficient of 60 µV/K, which results in a power factor of 7.1 µW/m·K2. The resultant nanocomposite exhibits a crack-free surface up to 30% strain and retains its thermoelectric performance, decreasing only 10% relative to the unstretched one. Even after 1000 cycles of bending and twisting, the thermoelectric behavior of this nanocomposite is stable. The synergistic combination of the elastomeric mechanical properties (originated from PEO/PAA systems) and thermoelectric behaviors (resulting from a three-dimensional conjugated network of DWNT) opens up the possibility of achieving various applications such as wearable electronics and sensors that require high mechanical compliance.

Formation of multilayer through layer-by-layer assembly of starch-based polyanion with divalent metal ion

The layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly between metal ion and starch-based anion driven by electrostatic interaction was investigated. Multilayer films were obtained from starch-based derivative containing carboxyl groups (SC) with copper or lead ions. It was found that the concentration of metal ion in aqueous solution decreased with increasing the layers. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy exhibited the content of Cu(II) was higher when the surface was copper-ion-layer than that composed of SC. The surface of the film was smooth and no obvious fault plane was observed on its cross-section, which also indicated that the LbL assembly between starch-based polyanion and metal ion was carried out. Sodium alginate was adopted as another polyanion to conduct the LbL assembly. Part of metal ion was replaced with rhodamine B to fabricate composite multilayer. During such an assembly, the concentration of copper ion in aqueous solution decreased with increasing the layers as well. These phenomena suggested that the LbL assembly between polysaccharide-based polyanion and metal ion was feasible.

Oxidative Layer-By-Layer Multilayers Based on Metal Coordination: Influence of Intervening Graphene Oxide Layers

Layer-by-layer (LbL) fabricated oxidative multilayers consisting of successive layers of inorganic polyphosphate (PP) and Ce(IV) can electrolessly form thin conducting polymer films on their surface. We describe the effect of substituting every second PP layer in the (PP/Ce) multilayers for graphene oxide (GO) as a means of modifying the structure and mechanical properties of these (GO/Ce/PP/Ce) films and enhancing their growth. Both types of LbL films are based on reversible coordinative bonding between the metal ions and the oxygen-bearing groups in PP and GO, instead of purely electrostatic interactions. The GO incorporation leads to the doubling of the areal mass density and to a dry film thickness close to 300 nm after 4 (GO/Ce/PP/Ce) tetralayers. The film roughness increases significantly with thickness. The (PP/Ce) films are soft materials with approximately equal shear storage and loss moduli, but the incorporation of GO doubles the storage modulus. PP displays a marked terminating layer effect and practically eliminates mechanical losses, making the (GO/Ce/PP/Ce) films almost pure soft elastomers. The smoothness of the (PP/Ce) films and the PP-termination effects are attributed to the reversible coordinative bonding. The (GO/Ce/PP/Ce) films oxidize pyrrole and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) and form polypyrrole and PEDOT films on their surfaces. These polymer films are considerably thicker than those formed using the (PP/Ce) multilayers with the same nominal amount of cerium layers. The GO sheets interfere with the polymerization reaction and make its kinetics biphasic. The (GO/Ce) multilayers without PP are brittle and thin.
