Layer‐by‐Layer Formation of Polyamine‐Salt Aggregate/Polyelectrolyte Multilayers. Loading and Controlled Release of Probe Molecules from Self‐Assembled Supramolecular Networks

Poly(allylamine)-tripolyphosphate Ionic Assemblies as Nanocarriers: Friend or Foe?

Designing effective drug nanocarriers that are easy to synthesize, robust, and nontoxic is a significant challenge in nanomedicine. Polyamine-multivalent molecule nanocomplexes are promising drug carriers due to their simple and all-aqueous manufacturing process. However, these systems can present issues of colloidal instability over time and cellular toxicity due to the cationic polymer. In this study, we finely modulate the formation parameters of poly(allylamine-tripolyphosphate) complexes to jointly optimize the robustness and safety. Polyallylamine was ionically assembled with tripolyphosphate anions to form liquid-like nanocomplexes with a size of around 200 nm and a zeta potential of -30 mV. We found that nanocomplexes exhibit tremendous long-term stability (9 months of storage) in colloidal dispersion and that they are suitable as protein-loading agents. Moreover, the formation of nanocomplexes induced by tripolyphosphate anions produces a switch-off in the toxicity of the system by altering the overall charge from positive to negative. In addition, we demonstrate that nanocomplexes can be internalized by bone-marrow-derived macrophage cells. Altogether, these nanocomplexes have attractive and promising properties as delivery nanoplatforms for potential therapies based on the immune system activation.

Field-effect transistors engineered via solution-based layer-by-layer nanoarchitectonics

The layer-by-layer (LbL) technique has been proven to be one of the most versatile approaches in order to fabricate functional nanofilms. The use of simple and inexpensive procedures as well as the possibility to incorporate a very wide range of materials through different interactions have driven its application in a wide range of fields. On the other hand, field-effect transistors (FETs) are certainly among the most important elements in electronics. The ability to modulate the flowing current between a source and a drain electrode via the voltage applied to the gate electrode endow these devices to switch or amplify electronic signals, being vital in all of our everyday electronic devices. In this topical review, we highlight different research efforts to engineer field-effect transistors using the LbL assembly approach. We firstly discuss on the engineering of the channel material of transistors via the LbL technique. Next, the deposition of dielectric materials through this approach is reviewed, allowing the development of high-performance electronic components. Finally, the application of the LbL approach to fabricate FETs-based biosensing devices is also discussed, as well as the improvement of the transistor's interfacial sensitivity by the engineering of the semiconductor with polyelectrolyte multilayers.

Polyelectrolyte-multivalent molecule complexes: physicochemical properties and applications

The complexation of polyelectrolytes with other oppositely charged structures gives rise to a great variety of functional materials with potential applications in a wide spectrum of technological fields. Depending on the assembly conditions, polyelectrolyte complexes can acquire different macroscopic configurations such as dense precipitates, nanosized colloids and liquid coacervates. In the past 50 years, much progress has been achieved to understand the principles behind the phase separation induced by the interaction of two oppositely charged polyelectrolytes in aqueous solutions, especially for symmetric systems (systems in which both polyions have similar molecular weight and concentration). However, in recent years, the complexation of polyelectrolytes with alternative building blocks such as small charged molecules (multivalent inorganic species, oligopeptides, and oligoamines, among others) has gained attention in different areas. In this review, we discuss the physicochemical characteristics of the complexes formed by polyelectrolytes and multivalent small molecules, putting a special emphasis on their similarities with the well-known polycation-polyanion complexes. In addition, we analyze the potential of these complexes to act as versatile functional platforms in various technological fields, such as biomedicine and advanced materials engineering.

Electrochemically addressed FET-like nanofluidic channels with dynamic ion-transport regimes

Nanofluidic channels in which the ionic transport can be modulated by the application of an external voltage to the nanochannel walls have been described as nanofluidic field effect transistors (nFETs) because of their analogy with electrolyte-gated field effect transistors. The creation of nFETs is attracting increasing attention due to the possibility of controlling ion transport by using an external voltage as a non-invasive stimulus. In this work, we show that it is possible to extend the actuation range of nFETs by using the supporting electrolyte as a "chemical effector". For this aim, a gold-coated poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) membrane was modified with electroactive poly-o-aminophenol. By exploiting the interaction between the electroactive poly-o-aminophenol and the ions in the electrolyte solution, the magnitude and surface charge of the nanochannels were fine-tuned. In this way, by setting the electrolyte nature it has been possible to set different ion transport regimes, i.e.: cation-selective or anion-selective ion transport, whereas the rectification efficiency of the ionic transport was controlled by the gate voltage applied to the electroactive polymer layer. Remarkably, under both regimes, the platform displays a reversible and rapid response. We believe that this strategy to preset the actuation range of nFETs by using the supporting electrolyte as a chemical effector can be extended to other devices, thus offering new opportunities for the development of stimulus-responsive solid-state nanochannels.

Mass and charge transport in highly mesostructured polyelectrolyte/electroactive-surfactant multilayer films

HYPOTHESIS

Dimensionally stable electroactive films displaying spatially addressed redox sites is still a challenging goal due to gel-like structure. Polyelectrolyte and surfactants can yield highly mesostructured films using simple buildup strategies as layer-by-layer. The use of redox modified surfactants is expected to introduce order and an electroactive response in thin films.

EXPERIMENTS

The assembly of polyacrylic acid and different combinations of redox-modified and unmodified hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide yields highly structured and electroactive thin films. The growth, viscoelastic properties, mass, and electron transport of these films were studied by combining electrochemical and quartz crystal balance with dissipation experiments.

FINDINGS

Our results show that the films are highly rigid and poorly hydrated. The mass and charge transport reveal that the ingress (egress) of the counter ions during the electrochemical oxidation (reduction) is accompanied with a small amount of water, which is close to their hydration sphere. Thus, the generated mesostructured films present an efficient charge transport with negligible changes in their structures during the electron transfer process. The control over the meso-organization and its stability represents a promising tool in the construction of devices where the vectorial transfer of electrons, or ions, is required.

High-sensitivity detection of dopamine by biomimetic nanofluidic diodes derivatized with poly(3-aminobenzylamine)

During the last few years, much scientific effort has been devoted to the control of ionic transport properties of solid state nanochannels and the rational integration of chemical systems to induce changes in the ionic transport by interaction with selected target molecules for (bio)sensing purposes. In this work, we present the construction and functional evaluation of a highly sensitive dopamine-responsive iontronic device by functionalization of bullet-shaped track-etched single nanochannels in PET membranes with poly(3-aminobenzylamine) (PABA). The variety of basic groups in this amino-appended polyaniline derivative allows programming of the ion selectivity of the channel by setting the pH conditions. On the other hand, the amino-pendant groups of PABA become suitable binding sites for the selective chemical reaction with dopamine, leading to a change in the nanochannel surface charge. Thus, the exposure of the PABA-modified nanochannel to dopamine solutions selectively produces changes in the iontronic response. By rationally selecting the conditions for both the dopamine binding step and the iontronic reading, we obtained a correlation between the rectification efficiency and dopamine concentration down to the nanomolar range, which was also successfully interpreted in terms of a simple binding model.

Mesostructured Electroactive Thin Films Through Layer-by-Layer Assembly of Redox Surfactants and Polyelectrolytes

Electroactive thin films are an important element in the devices devoted to energy conversion, actuators, and molecular electronics, among others. Their build-up by the layer-by-layer technique is an attractive choice since a fine control over the thickness and composition can be achieved. However, most of the assemblies described in the literature show a lack of internal order, and their thicknesses change upon oxidation-state alterations. In this work, we describe the formation of layer-by-layer assemblies of redox surfactants and polyelectrolytes that leads to the construction of mesoscale organized electroactive films. In contrast to thin films prepared with traditional redox polymers, here, the redox surfactant does not only allow the control of the film meso-organization (from 2D hexagonal to circular hexagonal phases) but it also allows the control of the number and position of the redox centers. Finally, these films show high stability and a negligible structural deformation under redox-state changes.

Redox-active polyamine-salt aggregates as multistimuli-responsive soft nanoparticles

Polyamine-salt aggregates have become promising soft materials in nanotechnology due to their easy preparation process and pH-responsiveness. Here, we report the use of hexacyanoferrate(ii) and hexacyanoferrate(iii) as electroactive crosslinking agents for the formation of nanometer-sized redox-active polyamine-redox-salt aggregates (rPSA) in bulk suspension. This nanoplatform can be selectively assembled or disassembled under different stimuli such as redox environment, pH and ionic strength. By changing the charge of the building blocks, external triggers allow switching the system between two phase states: aggregate-free solution or colloidal rPSA dispersion. The stimuli-activated modulation of the assembly/disassembly processes opens a path to exploit rPSA in technologies based on smart nanomaterials.

Rapid construction of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) biological implants incorporated with brushite (CaHPO4·2H2O) and antibiotics for anti-infection and enhanced osseointegration

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is an ideal implant material for orthopedic and dental application due to its high biocompatibility and mechanical property. However, biological inertness of PEEK hinders the effective clinical applications in treating bone defect, especially in the situation accompanied by bacterial infection. In this study, a layer-by-layer (LBL) deposition method with controlled cycles was developed to rapidly construct brushite (CaHPO₄·2H₂O) (CaP) layers containing gentamicin sulfate (GS) on PEEK to obtain CaP-and-GS modified PEEK, named as PEEK/CaP-GS. Different PEEK/CaP-GS, like PEEK/CaP-GS*3, PEEK/CaP-GS*6 and PEEK/CaP-GS*9 were conveniently prepared by repeating the LBL cycles to 3, 6 and 9 times, respectively. The morphology, structure and surface property of the fabricated PEEK/CaP-GS were carefully characterized. In vitro antibacterial experiments illustrated that all of the PEEK/CaP-GS samples had excellent and sustained antibacterial property. Cell proliferation experiments revealed the acceptable biocompatibility and cell osteogenic differentiation of PEEK/CaP-GS, especially in PEEK/CaP-GS*6. X-ray, μ-CT, and histological analysis showed that PEEK/CaP-GS exhibited in vivo antibacterial activity and osseointegration ability in the treatment of bone defect with infection. In both the in vitro and the in vivo experiments, PEEK/CaP-GS*6 prepared from the 6 LBL cycles exhibited the best antibacterial and osseointegration ability for bone healing. This work opens new avenue of the facile and effective modification of PEEK with special biological functions for clinical application, especially for the implants requiring excellent antibacterial and osseointegration ability.

Multitasking polyamine/ferrioxalate nano-sized assemblies: thermo-, photo-, and redox-responsive soft materials made easy

Responsive nanomaterials have emerged as key components in materials sciences. Herein, we report the one-step preparation of multi-stimuli responsive polyamine-salt aggregates (PSA) by ionically crosslinking polyethylenimine with potassium ferrioxalate (FeOx). The unique properties of FeOx enables a novel class of soft nanomaterial that disassembles by exposure to light, reducing environments and temperature.

The effect of ionic strength and phosphate ions on the construction of redox polyelectrolyte–enzyme self-assemblies

The type and concentration of ions present in a solution containing an electroactive polyelectrolyte shape its configuration, adsorption, and electrochemical response.
