Extreme Li-Mg selectivity via precise ion size differentiation of polyamide membrane

Achieving high selectivity of Li+ and Mg2+ is of paramount importance for effective lithium extraction from brines, and nanofiltration (NF) membrane plays a critical role in this process. The key to achieving high selectivity lies in the on-demand design of NF membrane pores in accordance with the size difference between Li+ and Mg2+ ions, but this poses a huge challenge for traditional NF membranes and difficult to be realized. In this work, we report the fabrication of polyamide (PA) NF membranes with ultra-high Li+/Mg2+ selectivity by modifying the interfacial polymerization (IP) process between piperazine (PIP) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) with an oil-soluble surfactant that forms a monolayer at oil/water interface, referred to as OSARIP. The OSARIP benefits to regulate the membrane pores so that all of them are smaller than Mg2+ ions. Under the solely size sieving effect, an exceptional Mg2+ rejection rate of over 99.9% is achieved. This results in an exceptionally high Li+/Mg2+ selectivity, which is one to two orders of magnitude higher than all the currently reported pressure-driven membranes, and even higher than the microporous framework materials, including COFs, MOFs, and POPs. The large enhancement of ion separation performance of NF membranes may innovate the current lithium extraction process and greatly improve the lithium extraction efficiency.

Nanofiltration Membranes with Crumpled Polyamide Films: A Critical Review on Mechanisms, Performances, and Environmental Applications

Nanofiltration (NF) membranes have been widely applied in many important environmental applications, including water softening, surface/groundwater purification, wastewater treatment, and water reuse. In recent years, a new class of piperazine (PIP)-based NF membranes featuring a crumpled polyamide layer has received considerable attention because of their great potential for achieving dramatic improvements in membrane separation performance. Since the report of novel crumpled Turing structures that exhibited an order of magnitude enhancement in water permeance ( Science 2018, 360 (6388), 518-521), the number of published research papers on this emerging topic has grown exponentially to approximately 200. In this critical review, we provide a systematic framework to classify the crumpled NF morphologies. The fundamental mechanisms and fabrication methods involved in the formation of these crumpled morphologies are summarized. We then discuss the transport of water and solutes in crumpled NF membranes and how these transport phenomena could simultaneously improve membrane water permeance, selectivity, and antifouling performance. The environmental applications of these emerging NF membranes are highlighted, and future research opportunities/needs are identified. The fundamental insights in this review provide critical guidance on the further development of high-performance NF membranes tailored for a wide range of environmental applications.

Interfacial Rearrangements of Block Copolymer Micelles Toward Gelled Liquid-Liquid Interfaces with Adjustable Viscoelasticity

Though amphiphiles are ubiquitously used for altering interfaces, interfacial reorganization processes are in many cases obscure. For example, adsorption of micelles to liquid-liquid interfaces is often accompanied by rapid reorganizations toward monolayers. Then, the involved time scales are too short to be followed accurately. A block copolymer system, which comprises poly(ethylene oxide)₁₁₀ -b-poly{[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]diisopropylmethylammonium chloride}₁₇₀ (i.e., PEO₁₁₀ -b-qPDPAEMA₁₇₀ with quaternized poly(diisopropylaminoethyl methacrylate)) is presented. Its reorganization kinetics at the water/n-decane interface is slowed down by electrostatic interactions with ferricyanide ([Fe(CN)₆ ]^3- ). This deceleration allows an observation of the restructuring of the adsorbed micelles not only by tracing the interfacial pressure, but also by analyzing the interfacial rheology and structure with help of atomic force microscopy. The observed micellar flattening and subsequent merging toward a physically interconnected monolayer lead to a viscoelastic interface well detectable by interfacial shear rheology (ISR). Furthermore, the "gelled" interface is redox-active, enabling a return to purely viscous interfaces and hence a manipulation of the rheological properties by redox reactions. Additionally, interfacial Prussian blue formation stiffens the interface. Such manipulation and in-depth knowledge of the rheology of complex interfaces can be beneficial for the development of emulsion formulations in industry or medicine, where colloidal stability or adapted permeability is crucial.
