Colloidal synthesis of metallodielectric Janus matchsticks

We present a gram-scale synthesis of metallodielectric Janus matchsticks, which feature a gold-coated silica sphere and a silica rod. SiO2 Janus matchsticks are synthesized in one batch by growing amine-functionalized SiO2 spheres at the end of SiO2 rods. Gold deposition on the spheres produces Au-SiO2 Janus matchsticks with an aspect ratio controlled by the rod length. The metallodielectric Janus matchsticks, produced by scalable colloidal synthesis, hold great potential as functional colloidal materials.

Adsorption Behavior and Mechanism of Palladium on Diethylaminoethyl-Modified Polyglycidyl Methacrylate Macroporous Spheres

The recovery of precious metals, such as palladium (Pd), from wastewater, is an economically important field. The present study reports the application of polyglycidyl methacrylate (PGMA) macroporous spheres with diethylaminoethyl (DEAE) functional groups (PGMA-DEAE) for the adsorption of palladium ions [Pd(II)] from simulated wastewater solutions. The effects of pH, adsorption duration, and initial concentration of Pd(II) on the adsorption amount were evaluated systematically. The results revealed that within the experimental pH range, the adsorption efficiency of Pd(II) increased with increasing pH. In particular, between pH 4 and 6, the Pd(II) adsorption efficiencies were approximately 100%. At 298 K and pH ∼ 4, the adsorption capacity of PGMA-DEAE for Pd(II) was 1.22 mmol/g. The adsorption rates of PGMA-DEAE for Pd(II) were high, and the adsorption equilibrium was reached within 10 min. Ca(II), Mg(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), and Fe(II) were selected as representative competitive adsorption metal ions. PGMA-DEAE had good separation selectivity for Pd(II) at pH 1-6 (all RPd/Me > 30), especially at pH ∼ 4 (all RPd/Me > 100). The SEM, TEM, EDS, TG, XRD, and XPS results indicated that in a high-acidity environment (CHCl ≥ 1 mol/L), Pd(II) was adsorbed on PGMA-DEAE through electrostatic attraction, while in a low-acidity environment (pH 1-6), Pd(II) was adsorbed on PGMA-DEAE through coordinated bonding between the Pd(II) ions and the N. PGMA-DEAE exhibited excellent stability and regeneration performance for five regeneration cycles.

Surface Engineering and Programmed Self-Assembly of Silica Nanoparticles with Controllable Polystyrene/Poly(4-vinybenzyl azide) Patches

The programmed self-assembly of patchy nanoparticles (NPs) through a bottom-up approach is an efficient strategy for producing highly organized materials with a predetermined architecture. Herein, we report the preparation of di- and trivalent silica NPs with polystyrene (PS)/poly(4-vinylbenzyl azide) (PVBA) patches and assemble them in a THF mixture by lowering the solvent quality. Silica-PS/PVBA colloidal hybrid clusters were synthesized through the seeded growth emulsion copolymerization of styrene and 4-vinylbenzyl azide (VBA) in varying ratios. Subsequently, macromolecules on silica NPs originating from the copolymerization of growing PS or PVBA chains with the surface-grafted MMS compatibilizer are engineered by fine-tuning of polymer compositions or adjustment of solvent qualities. Moreover, multistage silica regrowth of tripod and tetrapod allowed a fine control of the patch-to-particle size ratio ranging from 0.69 to 1.54. Intriguingly, patchy silica NPs (1-, 2-, 3-PSNs) rather than hybrid clusters are successfully used as templates for multistep regrowth experiments, leading to the formation of silica NPs with a new morphology and size controllable PVBA/PS patches. Last but not least, combined with mesoscale dynamics simulations, the self-assembly kinetics of 2-PSN and 3-PSN into linear colloidal polymers and honeycomb-like lattices are studied. This work paves a new avenue for constructing colloidal polymers with a well-defined sequence and colloidal crystals with a predetermined architecture.

Recent Progress in Macromolecule-Anchored Hybrid Gold Nanomaterials for Biomedical Applications

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), with elegant thermal, optical, or chemical properties due to quantum size effects, may serve as unique species for therapeutic or diagnostic applications. It is worth mentioning that their small size also results in high surface activity, leading to significantly impaired stability, which greatly hinders their biomedical utilizations. To overcome this problem, various types of macromolecular materials are utilized to anchor AuNPs so as to achieve advanced synergistic effect by dispersing, protecting, and stabilizing the AuNPs in polymeric-Au hybrid self-assemblies. In this review, the most recent development of polymer-AuNP hybrid systems, including AuNPs@polymeric nanoparticles, AuNPs@polymeric micelle, AuNPs@polymeric film, and AuNPs@polymeric hydrogel are discussed with respect to their different synthetic strategies. These sophisticated materials with diverse functions, oriented toward biomedical applications, are further summarized into several active domains in the areas of drug delivery, gene delivery, photothermal therapy, antibacterials, bioimaging, etc. Finally, the possible approaches for future design of multifunctional polymer-AuNP hybrids by combining hybrid chemistry with biological interface science are proposed.

From Nanofibrous Hollow Microspheres to Nanofibrous Hollow Discs and Nanofibrous Shells

Nano- and microsized structures are of central importance to advanced materials and nanotechnologies, which have tremendously impacted both biomedical and physical sciences. Herein, novel emulsification and thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) techniques to fabricate linear polymers into nanofibrous hollow objects are reported for the first time. Through manipulating the emulsification conditions, the evolution of the emulsion structure can be controlled and nanofibrous hollow microspheres with a controllable opening size and nano-fibrous shells can be fabricated. Through adjusting the rheological properties of the emulsions, nanofibrous hollow discs are also created. A new mechanistic hypotheses of the nanofibrous hollow object formation is proposed: the nano- and microscaled structures are independently determined by TIPS and the emulsification process, respectively. Guided by this theory, the nanofiber formation conditions for two further additional polymers (polyacrylonitrile and Nylon) under TIPS are identified, and solid/nanofibrous non-hollow/hollow microspheres are created from these two additional polymers under TIPS and emulsification for the first time. Therefore, the developed strategy is applicable to various polymer systems, and can broadly impact nano- and microfabrication technologies.

Fabrication of gold nanoparticle-polymer composite particles with raspberry, core-shell and amorphous morphologies at room temperature via electrostatic interactions and diffusion

Composite particles with varying morphologies composed of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and polymers were fabricated based on a combination of electrostatic interactions between the polymer particles and Au NPs and diffusion processes. The positively charged polymer particles were prepared from amino-terminated polystyrene (PS-NH2) and amino-terminated 1,2-polybutadiene (PB-NH2). Adsorption of citrate-stabilized Au NPs resulted in three different distribution states of Au NPs in the polymer particles, depending on the glass transition temperature (Tg) and molecular weight of the polymer. The adsorption of Au NPs onto PS-NH2 particles produced raspberry-like composite particle morphologies, while the NPs instead diffused into the PB-NH2 particles, since the Tg of PB-NH2 is below room temperature. The diffusion of Au NPs could be controlled by varying the molecular weight of the PB-NH2 and the diameter of the NPs, and both core-shell and amorphous distributions were successfully achieved.
