From Random Coil Polymers to Helical Structures Induced by Carbon Nanotubes and Supramolecular Interactions

Organic chiral nano- and microfilaments: types, formation, and template applications

Organic chiral nanofilaments are part of an important class of nanoscale chiral materials that has recently been receiving significant attention largely due to their potential use in applications such as optics, photonics, metameterials, and potentially a range of medical as well as sensing applications. This review will focus on key examples of the formation of such nano- and micro-filaments based on carbon nanofibers, polymers, synthetic oligo- and polypeptides, self-assembled organic molecules, and one prominent class of liquid crystals. The most critical aspects discussed here are the underlying driving forces for chiral filament formation, potentially answering why specific sizes and shapes are formed, what molecular design strategies are working equally well or rather differently among these materials classes, and what uses and applications are driving research in this fascinating field of materials science.

Functional Systems Derived from Nucleobase Self-assembly

Dynamic and reversible non-covalent interactions endow synthetic systems and materials with smart adaptive functions that allow them to response to diverse stimuli, interact with external agents, or repair structural defects. Inspired by the outstanding performance and selectivity of DNA in living systems, scientists are increasingly employing Watson-Crick nucleobase pairing to control the structure and properties of self-assembled materials. Two sets of complementary purine-pyrimidine pairs (guanine:cytosine and adenine:thymine(uracil)) are available that provide selective and directional H-bonding interactions, present multiple metal-coordination sites, and exhibit rich redox chemistry. In this review, we highlight several recent examples that profit from these features and employ nucleobase interactions in functional systems and materials, covering the fields of energy/electron transfer, charge transport, adaptive nanoparticles, porous materials, macromolecule self-assembly, or polymeric materials with adhesive or self-healing ability.

Enantiocomplementary Chiral Polyhydroxyenoate: Chemoenzymatic Synthesis and Helical Structure Control

Here, we present the chemoenzymatic synthesis of two pairs of configuration-customized unsaturated chiral polyesters and discover that they are able to self-assemble into a helical superstructure. The chiral (R)- or (S)-polyesters with a polar unsaturated main-chain and an apolar side chain were designed to be stereoregular and amphiphilic-like. The solvent polarity, stereoregularity, unsaturated bond in the backbone and the structure of side chains were found to be the key factors to affect the self-assembly performance of the chiral polyesters. As the solvent polarity increased, the nanostructures of stereoregular unsaturated polyesters transformed from spheres to helical fibers, while there was no such transformation for the racemic or saturated polyesters.

Recognition of silver cations by multifarene[2,2] chemosensors with unexpected fluorescence response

Fluorescent chemosensors based on a new macrocyclic compound, multifarene[2,2], with modification by triazole-linked pyrene or anthracene were synthesized. These macrocyclic sensors exhibited high affinity and selectivity toward Ag⁺ over other metal ions, with ratiometric or enhanced response of their fluorescence emissions depending upon the substituent species for coordination to Ag⁺, and an unexpected response to a concentration threshold of the metal cations was discovered. The experimental evidences of fluorescence spectra, ¹H NMR titration, IR spectra, and high-resolution mass spectra suggested the coordination behaviors of the sensors with Ag⁺, that is, the 1:1 complexes were formed with moderate association constants of about 10⁵ L·mol^-1, and the sulfur atoms on macrocyclic ligand should affinite to the metal cations. Energy-minimized structures and frontier orbitals were estimated by quantum chemical calculations with a view to rationalizing the fluorescence response of the multifarene[2,2] sensors upon binding to Ag⁺.

Self-Assembled Structures of Diblock Copolymer/Homopolymer Blends through Multiple Complementary Hydrogen Bonds

A poly(styrene-b-vinylbenzyl triazolylmethyl methyladenine) (PS-b-PVBA) diblock copolymer and a poly(vinylbenzyl triazolylmethyl methylthymine) (PVBT) homopolymer were prepared through a combination of nitroxide-mediated radical polymerizations and click reactions. Strong multiple hydrogen bonding interactions of the A···T binary pairs occurred in the PVBA/PVBT miscible domain of the PS-b-PVBA/PVPT diblock copolymer/homopolymer blend, as evidenced in Fourier transform infrared and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. The self-assembled lamellar structure of the pure PS-b-PVBA diblock copolymer after thermal annealing was transformed to a cylinder structure after blending with PVBT at lower concentrations and then to a disordered micelle or macrophase structure at higher PVBT concentrations, as revealed by small-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy.

Stimuli-responsive supramolecular conjugated polymer with phototunable surface relief grating

A facile method to synthesize azobenzene- and thymine (T)-functionalized conjugated copolymers through Suzuki coupling polymerization and click reactions and used in surface relief gratings displaying long-range-ordered interference patterns.

Diphenylpyrenylamine-functionalized polypeptides: secondary structures, aggregation-induced emission, and carbon nanotube dispersibility

In this study we prepared—through ring-opening polymerization of γ-benzyl-l-glutamate N-carboxyanhydride (BLG-NCA) initiated by N,N-di(4-aminophenyl)-1-aminopyrene (pyrene-DPA-2NH₂)—poly(γ-benzyl-l-glutamate) (PBLG) polymers with various degrees of polymerization (DP), each featuring a di(4-aminophenyl)pyrenylamine (DPA) luminophore on the main backbone. The secondary structures of these pyrene-DPA-PBLG polypeptides were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and wide-angle X-ray diffraction, revealing that the polypeptides with DPs of less than 19 were mixtures of α-helical and β-sheet conformations, whereas the α-helical structures were preferred for longer chains. Interestingly, pyrene-DPA-2NH₂ exhibited weak photoluminescence (PL), yet the emission of the pyrene-DPA-PBLG polypeptides was 16-fold stronger, suggesting that attaching PBLG chains to pyrene-DPA-2NH₂ turned on a radiative pathway for the non-fluorescent molecule. Furthermore, pyrene-DPA-2NH₂ exhibited aggregation-caused quenching; in contrast, after incorporation into the PBLG segments with rigid-rod conformations, the resulting pyrene-DPA-PBLG polypeptides displayed aggregation-induced emission. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that mixing these polypeptides with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in DMF led to the formation of extremely dispersible pyrene-DPA-PBLG/MWCNT composites. The fabrication of MWCNT composites with such biocompatible polymers should lead to bio-inspired carbon nanostructures with useful biomedical applications.

PBLG chains to pyrene-DPA-2NH₂ turned on a radiative pathway for the non-fluorescent molecule and TEM revealed these polypeptides with carbon nanotube to form PBLG/MWCNT composite.

Bio-Inspired Supramolecular Chemistry Provides Highly Concentrated Dispersions of Carbon Nanotubes in Polythiophene

In this paper we report the first observation, through X-ray diffraction, of noncovalent uracil-uracil (U-U) dimeric π-stacking interactions in carbon nanotube (CNT)-based supramolecular assemblies. The directionally oriented morphology determined using atomic force microscopy revealed highly organized behavior through π-stacking of U moieties in a U-functionalized CNT derivative (CNT-U). We developed a dispersion system to investigate the bio-inspired interactions between an adenine (A)-terminated poly(3-adeninehexyl thiophene) (PAT) and CNT-U. These hybrid CNT-U/PAT materials interacted through π-stacking and multiple hydrogen bonding between the U moieties of CNT-U and the A moieties of PAT. Most importantly, the U···A multiple hydrogen bonding interactions between CNT-U and PAT enhanced the dispersion of CNT-U in a high-polarity solvent (DMSO). The morphology of these hybrids, determined using transmission electron microscopy, featured grape-like PAT bundles wrapped around the CNT-U surface; this tight connection was responsible for the enhanced dispersion of CNT-U in DMSO.

A novel fluorescence “on–off–on” chemosensor for Hg2+via a water-assistant blocking heavy atom effect

The heavy atom effect and blocking thereof were demonstrated within the same system by the use of a C₃-symmetric homooxacalix[3]arene scaffold.

Synthesis, optical properties, and electronic structures of nucleobase-containing π-conjugated oligomers

The molecular recognition properties of the nucleobases instruct the formation of complex three-dimensional architectures in natural and synthetic systems; relatively unexplored is their use as building blocks for π-conjugated materials where they might mutually tune electronic and supramolecular structures. Toward this goal, an introductory set (1a-d and 2a-d) of six purine-terminated and two pyrimidine-terminated π-conjugated oligomers has been synthesized and used to develop experimental electronic and photophysical structure-property trends. Unlike 2,2':5',2″-terthiophene (TTT) derivatives 2a-d, intramolecular charge transfer dominates oligomers 1a-d bearing a 4,7-bisthienylbenzothiadiazole (TBT) spacer due to the strong electron-accepting ability of its benzothiadiazole (BTD) ring. The resulting donor-acceptor-donor systems feature lower HOMO-LUMO gaps than the terthiophene-linked nucleobases (ΔE(g) ∼ 1.8 eV vs 2.4 eV based on electrochemical measurements), and the lowest so far for π-conjugated molecules that include nucleobases within the π-framework. Experiments reveal a dependence of photophysical and electronic structure on the nature of the nucleobase and are in good agreement with theoretical calculations performed at the B3LYP/6-31+G** level. Overall, the results show how nucleobase heterocycles can be installed within π-systems to tune optical and electronic properties. Future work will evaluate the consequences of these information-rich components on supramolecular π-conjugated structure.

Multiple hydrogen bonding mediates the formation of multicompartment micelles and hierarchical self-assembled structures from pseudo A-block-(B-graft-C) terpolymers

Different multi-compartment micelle structures: raspberry-like spheres, core–shell–corona cylinders, nanostructured vesicles, onion-like structures, and woodlouse-like structures was found dependent upon selective solvent concentration.

Controlling the crystalline three-dimensional order in bulk materials by single-wall carbon nanotubes

The construction of ordered single-wall carbon nanotube soft-materials at the nanoscale is currently an important challenge in science. Here we use single-wall carbon nanotubes as a tool to gain control over the crystalline ordering of three-dimensional bulk materials composed of suitably functionalized molecular building blocks. We prepare p-type nanofibres from tripeptide and pentapeptide-containing small molecules, which are covalently connected to both carboxylic and electron-donating 9,10-di(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene termini. Adding small amounts of single-wall carbon nanotubes to the so-prepared p-nanofibres together with the externally controlled self assembly by charge screening by means of Ca(2+) results in new and stable single-wall carbon nanotube-based supramolecular gels featuring remarkably long-range internal order.
