Self-Healing Systems in Silicon Anodes for Li-Ion Batteries

Self-healing is the capability of materials to repair themselves after the damage has occurred, usually through the interaction between molecules or chains. Physical and chemical processes are applied for the preparation of self-healing systems. There are different approaches for these systems, such as heterogeneous systems, shape memory effects, hydrogen bonding or covalent–bond interaction, diffusion, and flow dynamics. Self-healing mechanisms can occur in particular through heat and light exposure or through reconnection without a direct effect. The applications of these systems display an increasing trend in both the R&D and industry sectors. Moreover, self-healing systems and their energy storage applications are currently gaining great importance. This review aims to provide general information on recent developments in self-healing materials and their battery applications given the critical importance of self-healing systems for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In the first part of the review, an introduction about self-healing mechanisms and design strategies for self-healing materials is given. Then, selected important healing materials in the literature for the anodes of LIBs are mentioned in the second part. The results and future perspectives are stated in the conclusion section.

Synthesis and characterization of benzodioxinone mono-telechelics and their use in block copolymerization

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether (mPEG)-based monotelechelics were quantitatively prepared by copper (I)-catalyzed azide/alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) click reactions using azido-terminated polymers and alkyne functional benzodioxinones. The monotelechelic containing dimethyl moities (2,2-dimethyl-5-(prop-2-yn-1-yloxy)-4H-benzo[d][1,3]dioxin-4-one) was heat-sensitive, whereas the monotelechelic containing diphenyl moieties (2,2-diphenyl-5-(prop-2-yn-1-yloxy)-4H-benzo[d][1,3]dioxin-4-one) was UV light sensitive. Based on the FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and GPC investigations, the CuAAC click reactions enable the quantitative syntheses of monotelechelics under mild conditions. Moreover, the photosensitive mPEG-based monotelechelic was further utilized for the block copolymer synthesis upon UV-light irradiation. The photoinduced acylation of mPEG monotelechelic consist of (2,2-diphenyl-5-(prop-2-yn-1-yloxy)-4H-benzo[d][1,3]dioxin-4-one) in the presence of hydroxy-terminated poly(epsilon caprolactone) enabled the successful block copolymer formation.

Effective removal of 137Cs ions from radioactive wastewater by Melamine-Styrene based Polymer (MSP)

Cesium (Cs) is a major product of uranium fission, which is one of the most existed radionuclides in radioactive wastes. Removal of Cs-137 has a critical role in the decontamination of liquid radioactive waste due to its half-life of 30.17 years. Concordantly, melamine styrene based conjugated polymer (MSP) was designed, synthesized, and characterized with FTIR, TGA, SEM and BET measurements. The novelty of the study is that the MSP adsorbent is designed as a highly conjugated structure to have better interaction with Cs over the Cs-π bond of the benzene groups of the adsorbent. In this work, the adsorption behavior and rate of MSP were investigated as parameters of adsorbent amount, pH, contact time, particle size, initial Cs⁺ concentration, and temperature. Besides, the adsorption efficiency of Cs-137 was examined by Gamma Spectroscopy. Adsorption results were fitted to three different isotherms which were Freundlich, Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R). The maximum adsorption capacity of polymer for Cs⁺ ion was found from Langmuir isotherm as 78 mg g^-1. As a part of kinetic parameters, pseudo first and second orders were investigated and in terms of the correlation coefficient pseudo second order was much more appropriate for adsorption of Cs-137 onto MSP.

Virus-Based Supramolecular Structure and Materials: Concept and Prospects

Rodlike and spherelike viruses are various monodisperse nanoparticles that can display small molecules or polymers with unique distribution following chemical modifications. Because of the monodisperse property, aggregates in synthetic protein-polymer nanoparticles could be eliminated, thus improving the probability for application in protein-polymer drug. In addition, the monodisperse virus could direct the growth of metal materials or inorganic materials, finding applications in hydrogel, drug delivery, and optoelectronic and catalysis materials. Benefiting from the advantages, the virus or viruslike particles have been widely explored in the field of supramolecular chemistry. In this review, we describe the modification and application of virus and viruslike particles in surpramolecular structures and biomedical research.

Light-Controlled Orthogonal Covalent Bond Formation at Two Different Wavelengths

We report light-induced reactions in a two-chromophore system capable of sequence-independent λ-orthogonal reactivity relying solely on the choice of wavelength and solvent. In a solution of water and acetonitrile, LED irradiation at λ_max =285 nm leads to full conversion of 2,5-diphenyltetrazoles with N-ethylmaleimide to the pyrazoline ligation products. Simultaneously present o-methylbenzaldehyde thioethers are retained. Conversely, LED irradiation at λ_max =382 nm is used to induce ligation of the o-methylbenzaldehydes in acetonitrile with N-ethylmaleimide via o-quinodimethanes, while 2,5-diphenyltetrazoles also present are retained. This unprecedented photochemical selectivity is achieved through control of the number and wavelength of incident photons as well as favorable optical properties and quantum yields of the reactants in their environment.

Copper Ligand and Anion Effects: Controlling the Kinetics of the Photoinitiated Copper(I) Catalyzed Azide-Alkyne Cycloaddition Polymerization

The kinetics of photoinduced copper(I) catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) polymerizations were assessed as a function of copper(II) amine-based ligands. Copper(II) bromide ligated with 1,1,4,7,10,10-hexamethylenetetramine (HMTETA) exhibited the fastest kinetics in both Norrish type(I) and type(II) photoinitiating systems. A characteristic induction period is observed with these polymerizations and is manipulated by adding an external tertiary amine in Norrish Type(II) photoinitating systems or by changing the anion of the copper(II) salt. Halides, specifically bromide and chloride, exhibit the fastest kinetics with the smallest induction period in comparison with organic anions, such as bistriflimide and triflate. The temporal control of the photo-CuAAC polymerization is affected by pre-ligation of the copper catalyst, by the presence of certain anions such as acetate, and by specific ligands such as tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA).

Benzodioxinone Photochemistry in Macromolecular Science: Progress, Challenges, and Opportunities

This paper reviews the photoinduced reactions of benzodioxinones and how they function in polymer synthesis and UV curing applications. The mechanistic characteristics of the ketene and benzophenone production from the photolysis of benzodioxinone indicate that, under certain conditions, each intermediate may undergo further reactions expedient for the formation of various polymeric structures. While ketenes are efficient contributors to step-growth polymerization when subjected to reaction with the compounds possessing hydroxyl or amine groups, the released benzophenone can be utilized as a photoinitiator in both the free radical and cationic polymerizations. It has been shown that the photolysis of heterobifunctional monomers equipped with benzodioxinone and aliphatic hydroxyl groups leads to the formation of oligoesters with a narrow molecular weight distribution. We also validated the photochemical ability of benzodioxinone to induce the synthesis of block and graft copolymers, hybrid and branched polymers, and cross-linked monofunctional vinyl monomers or hydroxyl group-containing linear polymers.
