Spectroscopic investigation of size-dependent CO2 binding on cationic copper clusters: analysis of the CO2 asymmetric stretch

Photofragmentation spectroscopy, combined with quantum chemical computations, was employed to investigate the position of the asymmetric CO2 stretch in cold, He-tagged Cun[CO2]+ (n = 1-10) and Cun[CO2][H2O]+ (n = 1-7) complexes. A blue shift in the band position was observed compared to the free CO2 molecule for Cun[CO2]+ complexes. Furthermore, this shift was found to exhibit a notable dependence on cluster size, progressively redshifting with increasing cluster size. The computations revealed that the CO2 binding energy is the highest for Cu+ and continuously decreases with increasing cluster size. This dependency could be explained by highlighting the role of polarization in electronic structure, according to energy decomposition analysis. The introduction of water to this complex amplified the redshift of the asymmetric stretch, showing a similar dependency on the cluster size as observed for Cun[CO2]+ complexes.

Full Dynamical and Ab Initio Investigation of the Electron Transfer-Mediated Decay Mechanism of He+ in the Presence of Heavier Alkali Dimers

We have studied the electron transfer-mediated decay (ETMD) process for the 1s ionized state of the He atom in the presence of a heavier alkali homonuclear dimer (Na2, K2, and Rb2) as well as heteronuclear dimer (LiNa, NaK, and KRb). In our computation, we have considered all the alkali dimers being in the singlet electronic ground state. The electron transfer from the alkali dimer to He (1s-1) leads to the emission of another electron from the alkali dimer into the continuum. We have investigated the impact of the distance of the He atom from the center of mass of the alkali dimer on the ETMD decay width. We also performed the Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics simulation to understand the impact of nuclear dynamics on the ETMD process.

Electronic and vibrational spectroscopies of aromatic clusters with He in a supersonic jet: The case of neutral and cationic phenol-Hen (n = 1 and 2)

Van der Waals clusters composed of He and aromatic molecules provide fundamental information about intermolecular interactions in weakly bound systems. In this study, phenol-helium clusters (PhOH-Hen with n ≤ 2) are characterized for the first time by UV and IR spectroscopies. The S1 ← S0 origin and ionization energy both show small but additive shifts, suggesting π-bound structures of these clusters, a conclusion supported by rotational contour analyses of the S1 origin bands. The OH stretching vibrations of the PhOH moiety in the clusters match with those of bare PhOH in both the S0 and D0 states, illustrating the negligible perturbation of the He atoms on the molecular vibration. Matrix shifts induced by He attachment are discussed based on the observed band positions with the help of complementary quantum chemical calculations. For comparison, the UV and ionization spectra of PhOH-Ne are reported as well.

Spectroscopy of helium-tagged molecular ions-Development of a novel experimental setup

In this contribution, we present an efficient and alternative method to the commonly used RF-multipole trap technique to produce He-tagged molecular ions at cryogenic temperatures, which are perfectly suitable for messenger spectroscopy. The seeding of dopant ions in multiply charged helium nanodroplets, in combination with a gentle extraction of the latter from the helium matrix, enables the efficient production of He-tagged ion species. With a quadrupole mass filter, a specific ion of interest is selected, merged with a laser beam, and the photoproducts are measured in a time-of-flight mass-spectrometer. The detection of the photofragment signal from a basically zero background is much more sensitive than the depletion of the same amount of signal from precursor ions, delivering high quality spectra at reduced data acquisition times. Proof-of-principle measurements of bare and He-tagged Ar-cluster ions, as well as of He-tagged C60 ions, are presented.

Enhancing Strong-Field Dissociation of H_{2}^{+} in Helium Nanodroplets

We investigate the above-threshold multiphoton ionization of H_{2} embedded in superfluid He nanodroplets driven by ultraviolet femtosecond laser pulses. We find that the surrounding He atoms enhance the dissociation of in-droplet H_{2}^{+} from lower vibrational states as compared to that of isolated gas-phase molecules. As a result, the discrete peaks in the photoelectron energy spectrum correlated with the HHe^{+} from the dissociative in-droplet molecule shift to higher energies. Based on the electron-nuclear correlation, the photoelectrons with higher energies are correlated to the nuclei of the low-vibrationally excited molecular ion as the nuclei share less photon energy. Our time-dependent nuclear wave packet quantum simulation using a simplified He-H_{2}^{+} system confirms the joint contribution of the driving laser field and the neighboring He atoms to the dissociation dynamics of the solute molecular ion. The results strengthen our understanding of the role of the environment on light-induced ultrafast dynamics of molecules.

Helium nanodroplets as an efficient tool to investigate hydrogen attachment to alkali cations

We report a novel method to reversibly attach and detach hydrogen molecules to positively charged sodium clusters formed inside a helium nanodroplet host matrix. It is based on the controlled production of multiply charged helium droplets which, after picking up sodium atoms and exposure to H2 vapor, lead to the formation of Nam+(H2)n clusters, whose population was accurately measured using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The mass spectra reveal particularly favorable Na+(H2)n and Na2+(H2)n clusters for specific "magic" numbers of attached hydrogen molecules. The energies and structures of these clusters have been investigated by means of quantum-mechanical calculations employing analytical interaction potentials based on ab initio electronic structure calculations. A good agreement is found between the experimental and the theoretical magic numbers.

Electronic spectroscopy of cationic adamantane clusters and dehydrogenated adamantane in helium droplets

We report the first helium-tagged electronic spectra of cationic adamantane clusters, along with its singly, doubly, and triply dehydrogenated analogues embedded in helium droplets. Absorption spectra were measured by recording the evaporation of helium atoms as a function of laser wavelength in the range of 300-2150 nm. Experimental spectra are coupled with simulated spectra obtained from quantum chemical calculations. The spectrum of cationic adamantane agrees with the electronic photodissociation spectrum measured previously, with an additional low-energy absorption at around 1000 nm. The spectra of the dehydrogenated molecules present broad absorptions exclusively in the high-energy region (300-600 nm). For the higher order adamantane dimer and trimer ions, strong absorptions are observed in the low-energy region (900-2150 nm), rationalised by transitions delocalised over two adamantane units.

Mass Spectra Resulting from Collision Processes

A new database and viewer for mass spectra resulting from collision processes is presented that follows the standards of the Virtual Atomic and Molecular Data Centre (VAMDC). A focus was placed on machine read and write access, as well as ease of use. In a browser-based viewer, mass spectra and all parameters related to a given measurement can be shown. The program additionally enables a direct comparison between two mass spectra, either by plotting them on top of each other or their difference to identify subtle variations in the data.

Efficient Formation of Size-Selected Clusters upon Pickup of Dopants into Multiply Charged Helium Droplets

Properties of clusters often depend critically on the exact number of atomic or molecular building blocks, however, most methods of cluster formation lead to a broad, size distribution and cluster intensity anomalies that are often designated as magic numbers. Here we present a novel approach of breeding size-selected clusters via pickup of dopants into multiply charged helium nanodroplets. The size and charge state of the initially undoped droplets and the vapor pressure of the dopant in the pickup region, determines the size of the dopant cluster ions that are extracted from the host droplets, via evaporation of the helium matrix in a collision cell filled with room temperature helium or via surface collisions. Size distributions of the selected dopant cluster ions are determined utilizing a high-resolution time of flight mass spectrometer. The comparison of the experimental data, with simulations taking into consideration the pickup probability into a shrinking He droplet due to evaporation during the pickup process, provides a simple explanation for the emergence of size distributions that are narrower than Poisson.

Infrared spectroscopy of carbocations upon electron ionization of ethylene in helium nanodroplets

The electron impact ionization of helium droplets doped with ethylene molecules and clusters yields diverse C_XH_Y ⁺ cations embedded in the droplets. The ionization primarily produces C₂H₂ ⁺, C₂H₃ ⁺, C₂H₄ ⁺, and CH₂ ⁺, whereas larger carbocations are produced upon the reactions of the primary ions with ethylene molecules. The vibrational excitation of the cations leads to the release of bare cations and cations with a few helium atoms attached. The laser excitation spectra of the embedded cations show well resolved vibrational bands with a few wavenumber widths-an order of magnitude less than those previously obtained in solid matrices or molecular beams by tagging techniques. Comparison with the previous studies of free and tagged CH₂ ⁺, CH₃ ⁺, C₂H₂ ⁺, C₂H₃ ⁺, and C₂H₄ ⁺ cations shows that the helium matrix typically introduces a shift in the vibrational frequencies of less than about 20 cm^-1, enabling direct comparisons with the results of quantum chemical calculations for structure determination. This work demonstrates a facile technique for the production and spectroscopic study of diverse carbocations, which act as important intermediates in gas and condensed phases.

Complexes with Atomic Gold Ions: Efficient Bis-Ligand Formation

Complexes of atomic gold with a variety of ligands have been formed by passing helium nanodroplets (HNDs) through two pickup cells containing gold vapor and the vapor of another dopant, namely a rare gas, a diatomic molecule (H₂, N₂, O₂, I₂, P₂), or various polyatomic molecules (H₂O, CO₂, SF₆, C₆H₆, adamantane, imidazole, dicyclopentadiene, and fullerene). The doped HNDs were irradiated by electrons; ensuing cations were identified in a high-resolution mass spectrometer. Anions were detected for benzene, dicyclopentadiene, and fullerene. For most ligands L, the abundance distribution of AuL_n⁺ versus size n displays a remarkable enhancement at n = 2. The propensity towards bis-ligand formation is attributed to the formation of covalent bonds in Au⁺L₂ which adopt a dumbbell structure, L-Au⁺-L, as previously found for L = Xe and C₆₀. Another interesting observation is the effect of gold on the degree of ionization-induced intramolecular fragmentation. For most systems gold enhances the fragmentation, i.e., intramolecular fragmentation in AuL_n⁺ is larger than in pure L_n⁺. Hydrogen, on the other hand, behaves differently, as intramolecular fragmentation in Au(H₂)_n⁺ is weaker than in pure (H₂)_n⁺ by an order of magnitude.
